• Designing a service for consumption on multiple mobile platforms

  I am building and designing a (mostly) read-only interface to some data. I'll be uing ASP.NET MVC to build a psudo-restful API. I'm wondering if anyone can provide some resources for building full-client applications for various mobile platforms, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, etc. I'm thinking that serving up XML data is going to be the most simple and universal, but parsing XML in objective-C for example doesn't sound like fun to me, but maybe there are some good libaries out there to help ease this task? In other words, what formt will be the quickest to implement on the client side? Are there any JSON parsrs for iPhone or Android? I know there are .NET JSON parsers, but not sure about other platforms -- is ther another format that might better? Or should I stick with pure XML and deal with it on each platform differently?

• what causes the .NET SerialPort class DataReceived event to fire?

  I understand from the MSDN docs that the event DataReceived will not necessarily fire once per byte. But does anyone know what exactly is the mechanism that causes the event to fire? Does the receipt of each byte restart a timer that has to reach, say 10 ms between bytes, before the event fires? I ask because I'm trying to write an app that reads XML data coming in from a serial port. Because my laptop has no serial ports, I use a virtual serial port emulator. (I know, I know--I can't do anything about it ATM). When I pass data through the emulated port to my app, the event fires once for each XML record (about 1500 bytes). Perfect. But when a colleague at another office tries it with two computers connected by an actual cable, the DataReceived event fires repeatedly, after every 10 or so bytes of XML, which totally throws off the app.

• Are there any reasons to make all fields and variables final?

  In my current project I noticed that all class fields and variable inside methods are declared with final modifier whenever it's possible. • Why is the proper "respond_to" format not getting called?

  Hi All, I'm having a bit of an odd issue. Really too odd to type out, but here goes. Basically I have a controller that refuses to "respond_to" using javascript unless I assign my "chart.generate_xml" to a variable before the "respond_to" block like so: @xml = @chart.generate_xml(@begin_date,@end_date,1.hour) respond_to do |format| format.html format.js{ render :update do |page| page.insert_html :bottom, "chart-div", @xml #page.insert_html :bottom, "chart-div", @chart.generate_xml(@begin_date,@end_date,1.hour) end } If I remove the upper "@xml= …" portion and go with the lower "page.insert", the "format.js" section doesn't get called. And if I try to force the format with "request.format = :js", I get the javascript returned as text. I'm not doing anything special here in that method call, so I'm not sure why it would choose to respond any differently. FWIW, the method that triggers this controller action is using JS to do so, so I'm confused as to why "format.js" isn't always getting called. Thoughts? Best.

• Adding configChanges ="locale" programatically

  I use configChanges="locale" on my activities. Without this options in AndroidManifest.xml in 2.x i get flickering screens. It works in all my activities excepting in the preferences screen i add programatically. I have one Preference Activity -- it works after setting configChanges="locale" to the AndroidManifest.xml. Inside of the Preference Activity i add programatically a new preferencescreen. For this new PreferenceScreen i dont have an activity in the AndroidManifest.xml! So i cannot add the configChanges="locale" and the screen flickers on 2.x !! How can i add the attribute configChanges="locale" programatically?

• Java URLConnection Timeout

  I am trying to parse an XML file from an HTTP URL. I want to configure a timeout of 15 seconds if the XML fetch takes longer than that, I want to report a timeout. For some reason, the setConnectTimeout and setReadTimeout do not work. • Odd visual issue with ListView item layout with two pressable pieces

  I wanted to make a ListView where the items have two pressable pieces, like the layouts that show up in a couple of places in the stock Android phone/contacts application: I have the layout working fine, including handling events from each piece separately, except for a visual issue when the smaller piece is pressed. In my application the smaller piece only gets a small ellipse for the background when it is pressed, like this: Note that is actually not my application - that is NubDial, but my application has the same problem. Since NubDial uses the exact same XML layout as the phone app, I'm not sure how relevant the list item layouts are, but here they are anyway: Contacts list: contacts_list_item.xml NubDial: contacts_list_item.xml Does anybody know what might be happening there?

  Hi, i have a question about list views. I hope anyone knows the solution because i have been trying to solve this problem all the weekend. Well, i have a custom list view in which every row have a custom .xml (item_row.xml) with a set color background for the row item. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="70dip" android:orientation="vertical" android:background="@drawable/list_bg"> The problem is when i try to make a selector for the list. I want two things: When the item is focused, appears the typical orange rectangle over him. When the item is pressed the same. I have proved with a selector and a custom style but all i get is or the selector doesn't appear or the selector covering the item so i can't see it. If anyone can give me the right code i will be very grateful. Thanks

  Hello. I have been playing with Compact Framework lately and i need some advice. I have a collection of items. One of the properties on each item is a string type that holds XML. This XML defines image, font, style etc... Im looking for a control (similar to listView) that would replace listBox control. Im not satisfied with listView control, because it is very limited on items level. The control has to be dynamic enough so that my parser could parse the XML and customise the control. For a start i would like to show an image and perhaps some font styles for each row in the control. Here is a sample what im trying to achieve: Any suggestions?

When I try to use SAX or DOM Parser then I have this error: The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed. My XML File looks like this: <format type="filename" t="13241">0;W650;004;AG-Erzgeb</format> <format type="driver" t="123412">001;023</format> ...   Hi i have a inlogscreen (inlogdialog.xml), which includes 2 EditText (username, passwd) and i have a CheckBox (saveuser) with which the user can decide weather to save the username or not. • Problems with type and ext attribute of artifact

  Hi, I have following definition in ivy.xml <dependency org="southbeach" name="ego" rev="4.3.1" conf="properties->asterik" > <artifact name="ego" type="conf" ext="conf" conf="properties->asterik"/> </dependency> I have files with either extension conf or properties which i need at runtime, in ivysettings.xml, i have following: <filesystem name="privateFSa"> <artifact pattern="${localRepositoryLocation}/[artifact].[ext]" /> </filesystem> It always tries to look for ego.jar instead of ego.conf. can please somebody shed light on this? am i doing something wrong or ivy just supports tar,zip,gz, jar and not properties or conf files? I did workaround for now in ivysettings.xml <filesystem name="privateFSa"> <artifact pattern="${localRepositoryLocation}/[artifact].conf" /> </filesystem> but this doesnt looks good to hardcode conf there. • Missing safe control entry

  I've got a working hello-world like webpart for my SPS3.0 I can compile, pack and deploy it using VS2008, makecab.exe and stsadm. So I know the theory of deploying sharepoint webparts. My problem: After I inserted an additional .webpart file, an elements.xml and a feature.xml to deploy the .webpart file and get knowledge about adding features to my webpart, the deployed webpart is missing its safe control entry in the web.config. But the dll can be found in the gac and my features are also deployed to the right folders. I didn't change anything in my manifest.xml especially not in it's -tag, because it definitely worked before i added my additional feature files. Can anybody help me? Should i provide you some code snippets? Thanks Stefan

I am using the Codeigniter framework but I am not sure if the problem lies there. Also using %20 or just a space in the url bar produces no different results. • http handlers not working on web server but works on localhost

  i have a couple of xml files in my asp.net web application that i don't want anyone to access other than my server side code. this is what i tried.. <add verb="*" path="*.xml" type="System.Web.HttpForbiddenHandler" /> i wrote this inside the <httpHandlers> it works well on the localhost but not in the server... the server without any hesitation displays the xml file... i have no idea how to proceed... thanks in advance..:)

• simple EJB jar deployed in jboss with its own log4j configuration

  Hi All I have a simple EJB jar with a stateless session bean, deployed in JBOSS AS 4.2.2, unde r/server/default/deploy. The bean is registered under JNDI tree as viewed from jboss jmx console and I am able to access it through a remote java client outside JBOSS. Inside EJB jar, I have added some logging to be written to a separate log file, using apache log4j jar and log4j.xml. But I am not able to view any of the logs. Also I do not wish to use jboss-log4j.xml, since there will be many other EJBs to be deployed and wish to have separate log4j for each EJB application. Here is my one of the EJB-jar contents: EJB_DS.jar: log4j.xml classes apache log4j jar is added to /server/default/lib path. • Is it possible to programmatically switch error log providers with ELMAH?

  Is it possible to switch from using the XML provider to SQL Server using ELMAH? I need to investigate this option because of the fallibility of our SQL Server where our ELMAH errors are stored. I want to be able to fail gracefully and continue logging to XML if the server fails. I can see that programmatic connection string switching is possible, and I see that ELMAH Issue 149 announces the programmatic configuration of default error log, but I can't actually see any code examples anywhere, so I'm not too sure if this is possible. I'm guessing it is, in which case does anyone know for sure? My question is similar to this one, except that I want to try and log errors to SQL Server, and if that fails switch to XML, not log to all stores all the time.

  Hi people, I want to give the users to change their account info with restful_authentication plugin in rails. I added this two methods to my controller: def edit @user = User.find(params[:id]) end def update @user = User.find(params[:id]) # Only update password when necessary params[:user].delete(:password) if pàrams[:user][:password].blank? respond_to do |format| if @user.update_attributes(params[:user]) flash[:notice] = 'User was successfully updated.' format.html { redirect_to(@user) } format.xml { head :ok } else format.html { render :action => "edit" } format.xml { render :xml => @user.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end Also, I copied new.html.erb to edit.html.erb. Considering that resources are already defined in routes.rb I was expecting it to work easily, bute somehow when I click the save button it calls the create method, instead of update, using a POST http request. Any ideas?

  Hi, I have set up OpenSSH in my windows environment and wants to invoke a ANT script from a Linux environment. But i'm getting the following error: $ ant -f invoke.xml Buildfile: /home/inysi/jpegu/cdt/tmp/invoke.xml run: [sshexec] Connecting to ****** [sshexec] cmd : ant -f build.xml [sshexec] uname: not found [sshexec] basename: not found [sshexec] dirname: not found [sshexec] Error: JAVA_HOME is not defined correctly. [sshexec] We cannot execute java [sshexec] which: not found BUILD SUCCESSFUL Total time: 2 seconds But, i can invoke the remote ANT script in Linux environment using SSHEXEC from windows. Can you please let me know, what could be the issue. JAVA_HOME is set in the windows environment variables. Where to set JAVA_HOME in the windows environment. Is there something similar to .bash_profile in windows. So that ANT process can pick it up.
