  • to_xml with :only and :methods

    - by Jake
I'm calling to_xml on an ActiveRecord object with both :only and :methods parameters. The method that I'm including returns a collection for AR objects. This works fine without the :only param, but when that is added I just get the default to_s representation of my objects. i.e <author><books>#&lt;Book:0x107753228&gt;</books>\n</author> Any ideas? Update, here is the code: class Author < ActiveRecord::Base def books #this is a named scope products.by_type(:book) end end Author.to_xml(:methods => :books, :only => :id)

  • Rail plugin acts_as_taggable_on :through

    - by Craig
I have two models: class Employee < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :projects end class Project < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_taggable_on :skills, :roles end I would like to find Employees using the tags associated with their projects. The geokit-rails plugin supports a similar concept, using its ':through' relationship. Ideally, I would be able to: specify which tags (i.e. skills, roles) would be included in the conditions order the employees by the total number of projects with matching tags be able to access the matching-tag count for each employee for the purposes of building a tag cloud Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • How to call a Thor task multiple times?

    - by deepak
Thor like Rake (and Make) has task management. If I call a task multiple times, it will effectively call the task only once. How can I call a task multiple times? I tried modifying the @_invocations hash, but that did not work: require 'csv' require './config/environment' class MisReport < Thor desc "all", "generate mysql and postgres mis" def all generate("pg_mis_report", "pg") generate("mysql_mis_report", "mysql") end desc "generate", "generate mis report" def generate(file_name = "mis_report_#{Time.now.to_s(:number)}", connection = "postgres") if connection == "pg" puts "== postgres database" ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection :development_mysql else puts "== mysql database" ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection :development end # generate MIS puts puts "mis file is at: #{file_path}" end end

  • Sorting/Paginating/Filtering Complex Multi-AR Object Tables in Rails

    - by Matt Rogish
I have a complex table pulled from a multi-ActiveRecord object array. This listing is a combined display of all of a particular user's "favorite" items (songs, messages, blog postings, whatever). Each of these items is a full-fledged AR object. My goal is to present the user with a simplified search, sort, and pagination interface. The user need not know that the Song has a singer, and that the Message has an author -- to the end user both entries in the table will be displayed as "User". Thus, the search box will simply be a dropdown list asking them which to search on (User name, created at, etc.). Internally, I would need to convert that to the appropriate object search, combine the results, and display. I can, separately, do pagination (mislav will_paginate), sorting, and filtering, but together I'm having some problems combining them. For example, if I paginate the combined list of items, the pagination plugin handles it just fine. It is not efficient since the pagination is happening in the app vs. the DB, but let's assume the intended use-case would indicate the vast majority of the users will have less than 30 favorited items and all other behavior, server capabilities, etc. indicates this will not be a bottleneck. However, if I wish to sort the list I cannot sort it via the pagination plugin because it relies on the assumption that the result set is derived from a single SQL query, and also that the field name is consistent throughout. Thus, I must sort the merged array via ruby, e.g. @items.sort_by{ |i| i.whatever } But, since the items do not share common names, I must first interrogate the object and then call the correct sort by. For example, if the user wishes to sort by user name, if the sorted object is a message, I sort by author but if the object is a song, I sort by singer. This is all very gross and feels quite un-ruby-like. This same problem comes into play with the filter. If the user filters on the "parent item" (the message's thread, the song's album), I must translate that to the appropriate collection object method. Also gross. This is not the exact set-up but is close enough. Note that this is a legacy app so changing it is quite difficult, although not impossible. Also, yes there is some DRY that can be done, but don't focus on the style or elegance of the following code. Style/elegance of the SOLUTION is important, however! :D models: class User < ActiveRecord::Base ... has_and_belongs_to_many :favorite_messages, :class_name => "Message" has_and_belongs_to_many :favorite_songs, :class_name => "Song" has_many :authored_messages, :class_name => "Message" has_many :sung_songs, :class_name => "Song" end class Message < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :favorite_messages belongs_to :author, :class_name => "User" belongs_to :thread end class Song < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :favorite_songs belongs_to :singer, :class_name => "User" belongs_to :album end controller: def show u = User.find 123 @items = Array.new @items << u.favorite_messages @items << u.favorite_songs # etc. etc. @items.flatten! @items = @items.sort_by{ |i| i.created_at } @items = @items.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 20 end def search # Assume user is searching for username like 'Bob' u = User.find 123 @items = Array.new @items << u.favorite_messages.find( :all, :conditions => "LOWER( author ) LIKE LOWER('%bob%')" ) @items << u.favorite_songs.find( :all, :conditions => "LOWER( singer ) LIKE ... " ) # etc. etc. @items.flatten! @items = @items.sort_by{ |i| determine appropriate sorting based on user selection } @items = @items.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 20 end view: #index.html.erb ... <table> <tr> <th>Title (sort ASC/DESC links)</th> <th>Created By (sort ASC/DESC links))</th> <th>Collection Title (sort ASC/DESC links)</th> <th>Created At (sort ASC/DESC links)</th> </tr> <% @items.each |item| do %> <%= render { :partial => "message", :locals => item } if item.is_a? Message %> <%= render { :partial => "song", :locals => item } if item.is_a? • Custom validation works in development but not in unit test

    - by Geolev
I want to validate that at least one of two columns have a value in my model. I found somewhere on the web that I could create a custom validator as follows: # Check for the presence of one or another field: # :validates_presence_of_at_least_one_field :last_name, :company_name - would require either last_name or company_name to be filled in # also works with arrays # :validates_presence_of_at_least_one_field :email, [:name, :address, :city, :state] - would require email or a mailing type address module ActiveRecord module Validations module ClassMethods def validates_presence_of_at_least_one_field(*attr_names) msg = attr_names.collect {|a| a.is_a?(Array) ? " ( #{a.join(", ")} ) " : a.to_s}.join(", ") + "can't all be blank. At least one field must be filled in." configuration = { :on => :save, :message => msg } configuration.update(attr_names.extract_options!) send(validation_method(configuration[:on]), configuration) do |record| found = false attr_names.each do |a| a = [a] unless a.is_a?(Array) found = true a.each do |attr| value = record.respond_to?(attr.to_s) ? record.send(attr.to_s) : record[attr.to_s] found = !value.blank? end break if found end record.errors.add_to_base(configuration[:message]) unless found end end end end end I put this in a file called lib/acs_validator.rb in my project and added "require 'acs_validator'" to my environment.rb. This does exactly what I want. It works perfectly when I manually test it in the development environment but when I write a unit test it breaks my test environment. This is my unit test: require 'test_helper' class CustomerTest < ActiveSupport::TestCase # Replace this with your real tests. test "the truth" do assert true end test "customer not valid" do puts "customer not valid" customer = Customer.new assert !customer.valid? assert customer.errors.invalid?(:subdomain) assert_equal "Company Name and Last Name can't both be blank.", customer.errors.on(:contact_lname) end end This is my model: class Customer < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :subdomain validates_presence_of_at_least_one_field :customer_company_name, :contact_lname, :message => "Company Name and Last Name can't both be blank." has_one :service_plan end When I run the unit test, I get the following error: DEPRECATION WARNING: Rake tasks in vendor/plugins/admin_data/tasks, vendor/plugins/admin_data/tasks, and vendor/plugins/admin_data/tasks are deprecated. • Signing an unsigned assembly

    - by dagda1
The recent upgrade of NHibernate 2.1 has brought a mega headache situation to the surface. It seems most of the projects build by default as signed assemblies. For example fluentnhibernate references the keyfile fluent.snk. Nhibernate.search builds unsigned from what I can gather and will not build signed that is if you reference a generated keyfile, you get the error: Referenced assembly 'Lucene.Net' does not have a strong name This means projects like castle.activerecord that have nhibernate.search as a dependency will not build as you get the horrendous error referenced assembly nhibernate.search does not have a strong name: Quite a few projects use caslte.activerecord so it is quite important that this builds. Has anyone any idea what to do here as I am totally out of ideas? This is complete madness.

  • Conditional relation

    - by Lowgain
I've got a model like this: Stem -id -etc And then I have Stemrelation -stem_id -related_stem_id -active I can get the related stems with the following relations class Stem < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :stemrelations has_many :related_stems, :through => :stemrelations end class Stemrelation < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :stem belongs_to :related_stem, :class_name => "Stem", :foreign_key => "related_stem_id" end But now I'd only like to get the active relations. I tried adding this to the Stem model: has_many :active_related, :through => :stemrelations, :source => :related_stem, :conditions => {:active => true} but this gives me an error becasue it tries to check the active flag on the stem model instead of the stemrelation. What do I change here? Thanks!

  • Rails override validator message

    - by Anand
Hi, I have a site thats served in 2 flavours, English and French. Here's some code app/views/user/register.html.erb ----------------- <% form_for .....> <%= f.text_field :first_name %> <% end %> app/models/user.rb ------------------ class User < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :first_name end Now to display the error message in case if the site is being served in the French version, I have app/config/locales/fr.yml ------------------------- activerecord: errors: messages: empty: "ne peut pas être vide" So if someone does not fill in a first name, the validator takes the name of the field and appends the custom message for empty clause giving "First name ne peut pas être vide" which is incorrect, coz 'First name' in French is 'Prénom', hence it should be "Prénom ne peut pas être vide" Please can someone suggest a way of achieving the desired result.

  • Rails - Override primary key on has_one

    - by Ben Hall
I have the following associations, basically I want to link via userid and not the id of the object. class Tweet < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :user_profile, :primary_key = 'userid', :foreign_key = 'twitter_userid' class UserProfile < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :tweet, :foreign_key = 'userid' However the following spec fails as twitter_userid is reset to the id of the object it "should have the user's twitter id set on their user profile" do t = Tweet.new(:twitter_id = 1, :status = 'Tester', :userid = 'personA', :user_profile = UserProfile.new(:twitter_userid = 'personA', :avatar = 'abc')) t.save! t.user_profile.twitter_userid.should == 'personA' end should have the user's twitter id set on their user profile expected: "personA", got: 216 (using ==) However, the following does pass: it "should return the correct avatar after being saved" do t = Tweet.new(:twitter_id = 1, :status = 'Tester', :userid = 'personA', :user_profile = UserProfile.new(:twitter_userid = 'personA', :avatar = 'abc')) t.save! t.user_profile.avatar.should == 'abc' end How can I force it to use userid and not id? Thanks Ben

  • Rails Unit Testing with MyISAM Tables

    - by tadman
I've got an application that requires the use of MyISAM on a few tables, but the rest are the traditional InnoDB type. The application itself is not concerned with transactions where it applies to these records, but performance is a concern. The Rails testing environment assumes the engine used is transactional, though, so when the test database is generated from the schema.rb it is imported with the same engine. Is it possible to over-ride this behaviour in a simple manner? I've resorted to an awful hack to ensure the tables are the correct type by appending this to test_helper.rb: (ActiveRecord::Base.connection.select_values("SHOW TABLES") - %w[ schema_info ]).each do |table_name| ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute("ALTER TABLE `#{table_name}` ENGINE=InnoDB") end Is there a better way to make a MyISAM-backed model be testable?

  • Rails accepts_nested_attributes_for callbacks

    - by Rabbott
I have two models Ticket and TicketComment, the TicketComment is a child of Ticket. ticket.rb class Ticket < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :ticket_comments, :dependent => :destroy, :order => 'created_at DESC' # allow the ticket comments to be created from within a ticket form accepts_nested_attributes_for :ticket_comments, :reject_if => proc { |attributes| attributes['comment'].blank? } end ticket_comment.rb class TicketComment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :ticket validates_presence_of :comment end What I want to do is mimic the functionality in Trac, where if a user makes a change to the ticket, and/or adds a comment, an email is sent to the people assigned to the ticket. I want to use an after_update or after_save callback, so that I know the information was all saved before I send out emails. How can I detect changes to the model (ticket.changes) as well as whether a new comment was created or not (ticket.comments) and send this update (x changes to y, user added comment 'text') in ONE email in a callback method?

  • How do I use accepts_nested_attributes_for? I cannot use the .build method (!)

    - by Angela
Editing my question for conciseness and to update what I've done: How do I model having multiple Addresses for a Company and assign a single Address to a Contact, and be able to assign them when creating or editing a Contact? Here is my model for Contacts: class Contact < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :first_name, :last_name, :title, :phone, :fax, :email, :company, :date_entered, :campaign_id, :company_name, :address_id, :address_attributes belongs_to :company belongs_to :address accepts_nested_attributes_for :address end Here is my model for Address: class Address < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :street1, :street2, :city, :state, :zip has_many :contacts end I would like, when creating an new contact, access all the Addresses that belong to the other Contacts that belong to the Company. So here is how I represent Company: class Company < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :name, :phone, :addresses has_many :contacts has_many :addresses, :through => :contacts end Here is how I am trying to create a field in the View for _form for Contact so that, when someone creates a new Contact, they pass the address to the Address model and associate that address to the Contact: <% f.fields_for :address, @contact.address do |builder| %> <p> <%= builder.label :street1, "Street 1" %> </br> <%= builder.text_field :street1 %> <p> <% end %> When I try to Edit, the field for Street 1 is blank. I'm trying to write a rails application. I'm a ruby-on-rails newbie. I have a User model and a Hobby model. class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :hobbies end class Hobby < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end During the new user registration, I have used a text box where I enter a value for hobby. Then, when I press a button 'Add hobby', a method in UsersController add_hobby is to be called where I intend to append the value entered for hobby by user to the user i.e @user.hobbies << hobby However, my problem is that the user object has not been saved yet, so there is no way to access a particular user object. How do I get around this problem ?

I have tried: <%= link_to @person.company.companyname %> but that just outputs the company name inside a href tag but links to the current page. Thanks, Danny

Code below: class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :images, as: :imageable validates :name, presence: true accepts_nested_attributes_for :images, :reject_if => lambda { |img| img['asset'].blank? } end class Image < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :imageable, polymorphic: true mount_uploader :asset, ImageUploader validates :asset, presence: true end zzz.jbuilder.json template json.persons(@rodas, :id, :name, :images) json produced: { "rodas": [{ "id": 4, "name": "John", "images": [ { "asset": { "url": "/uploads/image/xxxx.png" } }, { "asset": { "url": "/uploads/image/yyyyy.jpeg" } } ]}, { "id": 19, "name": "Mary", "images": [ { "asset": { "url": "/uploads/image/kkkkkkk.png" } } ] }] } I want something like: { "rodas": [ { "id": 4, "name": "John", "images": [ "/uploads/image/xxxx.png" , "/uploads/image/yyyy.jpeg" ] }, { "id": 10, "name": "Mary", "images": [ "/uploads/image/dddd.png" , "/uploads/image/xxxx.jpeg" ] } ]}

  • Ruby on Rails and database associations

    - by Marco
Hi to all, I'm new to the Ruby world, and there is something unclear to me in defining associations between models. The question is: where is the association saved? For example, if i create a Customer model by executing: generate model Customer name:string age:integer and then i create an Order model generate model Order description:text quantity:integer and then i set the association in the following way: class Customer < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :orders end class Order < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :customer end I think here is missing something, for example the foreign key between the two entities. How does it handle the associations created with the keywords "has_many" and "belongs_to" ? Thanks

  • Drawing information from relational databases in Rails

    - by Trip
I am trying to pull the name of the Artist from the Albums database. These are my two models class Album < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :artist validates_presence_of :title validates_length_of :title, :minimum => 5 end class Artist < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :albums end And here is the Albums Controller def index @ albums = Album.all respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @albums } end end And the View from the index: <% @albums.each do |album| %> <tr> <td><%=h album.id %></td> <td><%=h album.title %></td> <td><%=h album.artist.name %></td> </tr <% end %> My end result html is coming out like this for the artist field! # and if i set it to artist.name I get this: undefined method `name' for nil:NilClass

  • Nested attributes form for model which belongs_to few models

    - by ExiRe
    I have few models - User, Teacher and TeacherLeader. class User < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible ..., :teacher_attributes has_one :teacher has_one :teacher_leader accepts_nested_attributes_for :teacher_leader end class Teacher < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_one :teacher_leader end class TeacherLeader < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :teacher end I would like to fill TeacherLeader via nested attributes. So, i do such things in controller: class TeacherLeadersController < ApplicationController ... def new @user = User.new @teacher_leader = @user.build_teacher_leader @teachers_collection = Teacher.all.collect do |t| [ "#{t.teacher_last_name} #{t.teacher_first_name} #{t.teacher_middle_name}", t.id ] end @choosen_teacher = @teachers_collection.first.last unless @teachers_collection.empty? end end And also have such view (new.html.erb): <%= form_for @user, :url => teacher_leaders_url, :html => {:class => "form-horizontal"} do |f| %> <%= field_set_tag do %> <% f.fields_for :teacher_leader do |tl| %> <div class="control-group"> <%= tl.label :teacher_id, "Teacher names", :class => "control-label" %> <div class="controls"> <%= select_tag( :teacher_id, options_for_select( @teachers_collection, @choosen_teacher )) %> </div> </div> <% end %> <div class="control-group"> <%= f.label :user_login, "Login", :class => "control-label" %> <div class="controls"> <%= f.text_field :user_login, :placeholder => @everpresent_field_placeholder %> </div> </div> <div class="control-group"> <%= f.label :password, "Pass", :class => "control-label" %> <div class="controls"> <%= f.text_field :password, :placeholder => @everpresent_field_placeholder %> </div> </div> <% end %> <%= f.submit "Create", :class => "btn btn-large btn-success" %> <% end %> Problem is that select form here does NOT appear. Why? Do i do something wrong?

  • How do I do multiple has_and_belongs_to_many associations between the same two classes?

    - by Ermin
I have the following setup: class Publication < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :authors, :class_name=>'Person', :join_table => 'authors_publications' has_and_belongs_to_many :editors, :class_name=>'Person', :join_table => 'editors_publications' end class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :publications end With this setup I can do stuff like Publication.first.authors. But if I want to list all publications in which a person is involved Person.first.publications, an error about a missing join table people_publications it thrown. How could I fix that? Should I maybe switch to separate models for authors and editors? It would however introduce some redundancy to the database, since a person can be an author of one publication and an editor of another.

  • Custom accessor for array element

    - by memph1s
I'm trying to create an accessor for one element from array with specific flag set to true: class EntranceObject < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :subscribers def customer self.subscribers.find(:first, :conditions => {:is_customer => true}) end def customer=(customer_params) self.subscribers << Subscriber.new(:name => customer_params[:name], :apartment => customer_params[:apartment], :phone_number => customer_params[:phone_number], :is_customer => true) end end class Subscriber < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :entrance_object validates_presence_of :name, :apartment end How do i need to validate this accessor in order to hightlight missing fields in a view? P.S. I'm newbie in RoR, maybe there is another approach to such work with one element from a collection? Thanks.

  • does a ruby on rails rack class get access to the entire rails environment?

    - by Andrew Arrow
that is when the def call(env) method is invoked by hitting any url, can I inside that method make some ActiveRecord queries, use classes defined in lib, etc. etc. Or is it more like an irb console without the rails env loaded? Another way to put it with a rake task example: task :foo => :environment do # with env end task :foo2 do # without env end I would think rack classes would NOT get the environment so they are super fast and don't take all the overhead of a normal rails request. But that doesn't seem to be the case. I CAN make ActiveRecord queries inside my rack class. So what is the advantage of rack then?

  • Inspecting a Word mail merge data source programmatically

    - by Guy Marom
I want to iterate over all rows of a MS-Word mail merge data source and extract the relevant data into an XML. I'm currently using this code: Imports Microsoft.Office.Interop Do objXW.WriteStartElement("Recipient") Dim objDataFields As Word.MailMergeDataFields = DataSource.DataFields For Each FieldIndex As Integer In mdictMergeFields.Keys strValue = objDataFields.Item(FieldIndex).Value If Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(strValue) Then strName = mdictMergeFields(FieldIndex) objXW.WriteElementString(strName, strValue) End If Next objXW.WriteEndElement() If DataSource.ActiveRecord = LastRecord Then Exit Do Else DataSource.ActiveRecord = Word.WdMailMergeActiveRecord.wdNextDataSourceRecord End If Loop And it turns out to be a little sluggish (About 1 second for each row). Is there any way to do it faster? My fantasy is finding a function like MailMergeDataSource.ToDatatable and then inspecting the datatable.
