• Returning Arrays from .net web service to Java ME web service results in compile error of stub?

  So, I'm getting some compile errors on netbeans 6.5 generated web service code for a java ME client to a c# (vs2005) web service. • Accessing an object's fields without an active session

  I'm using Hibernate 4.0.1.Final. Is it possible to access an object's fields if that object has been loaded via the org.hibernate.Session.load(Class clazz, Serializable id) method and there is no active session? • JDK 7u25: Solutions to Issues caused by changes to Runtime.exec

  The following examples were prepared by Java engineering for the benefit of Java developers who may have faced issues with Runtime.exec on the Windows platform. Background In JDK 7u21, the decoding of command strings specified to Runtime.exec(String), Runtime.exec(String,String[]) and Runtime.exec(String,String[],File) methods, has been made more strict. See JDK 7u21 Release Notes for more information. This caused several issues for applications. The following section describes some of the problems faced by developers and their solutions. Note: In JDK 7u25, the system property jdk.lang.Process.allowAmbigousCommands can be used to relax the checking process and helps as a workaround for some applications that cannot be changed. The workaround is only effective for applications that are run without a SecurityManager. See JDK 7u25 Release Notes for more information. Note: To understand the details of the Windows API CreateProcess call, see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms682425%28v=vs.85%29.aspx There are two forms of Runtime.exec calls: with the command as string: "Runtime.exec(String command[, ...])" with the command as string array: "Runtime.exec(String[] cmdarray [, ...] )" The issues described in this section relate to the first form of call. With the first call form, developers expect the command to be passed "as is" to Windows where the command needs be split into its executable name and arguments parts first. But, in accordance with Java API, the command argument is split into executable name and arguments by spaces. Problem 1: "The file path for the command includes spaces" In the call: Runtime.getRuntime().exec("c:\\Program Files\\do.exe") the argument is split by spaces to an array of strings as: c:\\Program, Files\\do.exe The first element of parsed array is interpreted as the executable name, verified by SecurityManager (if present) and surrounded by quotations to avoid ambiguity in executable path. This results in the wrong command: "c:\\Program" "Files\\do.exe" which will fail. Solution: Use the ProcessBuilder class, or the Runtime.exec(String[] cmdarray [, ...] ) call, or quote the executable path. Where it is not possible to change the application code and where a SecurityManager is not used, the Java property jdk.lang.Process.allowAmbigousCommands could be used by setting its value to "true" from the command line: -Djdk.lang.Process.allowAmbigousCommands=true This will relax the checking process to allow ambiguous input. For the Active Directory access, the LDAP would probably be the choise? I'm not totally sure if I'm asking the right questions but hopefully somebody has some ideas to forward me on.

• realistically speaking, could a seasoned .net developer enter the java space and land a job?

  I've been working with .net since 2001, and I am considering making a move into the java space. I find that java has so many more mature tools (hibernate is more mature, spring framework, established patters/designs, containers, distributed cache frameworks, etc etc.) I have been doing .net, and just recently I have been getting into design patterns, ORMS, etc. and it just seems the .net side of things are not as mature. Yes the trend going forward looks great as more and more are getting into this design strategy etc. I don't want this to get into a flame war, but I read that its not about the framework/stack, but the tools around it are what make the difference. And to me Java seems to be the winner. Anyhow, the real question here is, could I realistically get into shape in 6 months? i.e. Someone would consider hiring me, and not at a junior dev pay rate? Is this a bad idea?

The background is that I presented my current JAVA project and I would like to plot this in 3d, but I haven't done graphical output so far. And he proposed to let SCILAB do the 3d plotting, because there are some ready to use plot scemes implented. But he couldn't tell me how to achive this, so that's why I'm here :).   I'm trying to run SQuirreL SQL. I've downloaded it and installed it, but when I try to run it I get this error message: Java Virtual Machine Launcher. Could not find the main class. Program will exit. I get the gist of this, but I have not idea how to fix it. Any help? more info: I'm on Windows XP pro. I have java 1.6 installed, and other apps are running OK. The install ran OK. I believe I've followed the installation instructions correctly. To run it, I'm invoking the squirrel-sql.bat file. It's installed to /usr/share/jdbc-postgresql/lib/jdbc-postgresql.jar I assume that this path may be different in Ubuntu, Fedora, or Arch. Is there any way to do like what C does? Where you just add a -lfoo, and the linker would find libfoo.so. I'm using Ant 1.8.0 and Java 1.6.0_19.

  I'm writing a Java application with movable frames, and I've come across a quirk in Linux. I'm running GNOME 2.16.0 under CentOS. When I use JFrame.setBounds to set the bounds to any location that's half off the screen, it actually sets the location of the frame to be as close as possible to the bounds specified while still staying completely on the screen. This is confusing because other non-Java windows can move half off the screen. How do I tell Java to tell GNOME to actually put the frame where I specify, even if that's half off the screen?

• Why is memory management so visible in Java VM?

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java VMs compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined. I'd also be interested in references to technical papers/blog-posts/etc explaining design choices behind JVM GC implementations, across different JVMs or compared to other interpreted language VMs (e.g. comparing Sun or IBM JVM to Parrot). Are there technical reasons why JVM users still have to deal with non-auto-tuning heap/permgen sizes?

Installing GWT SDK, Eclipse plugin etc and running a "Hello world" is no problem... The server is running automagically in the background... But when it comes to setting it up my self, there seems to be confusingly many options. Jetty? Tomcat? Glassfish? How are those related/combinable to/with Apache? It suggests using a language with features to prevent or mitigate this problem, and says: For example, many languages that perform their own memory management, such as Java and Perl, are not subject to buffer overflows. Other languages, such as Ada and C#, typically provide overflow protection, but the protection can be disabled by the programmer. I was not aware that Java and C# differed in any meaningful way with regard to memory management. How is it that Java is not subject to buffer overflows, while C# only protects against overflows? And how is it possible to disable this protection in C#?

My guess is it's something to do with how I'm handling the initial vector/salt. I'm not very crypto-savvy but I'm thinking I should be able to take the sample clear-text and produce the same encrypted value in Java as ColdFusion produced. I am able to encrypt/decrypt my own data with my Java code (so I'm consistent) but I cannot match nor decrypt the ColdFusion sample encrypted value. I have access to a local webservice that can test the encrypted output. The given ColdFusion output sample passes/decrypts fine (of course). If I try to decrypt the same sample with my Java code (using the actual key and salt) I get a "Given final block not properly padded" error. I get the same net result when I pass my attempt at encryption (using the actual key and salt) to the test webservice. Any Ideas?

• How do I pipe the Java console output to a file?

  I found a bug in an application that completely freezes the JVM. The produced stacktrace would provide valuable information for the developers and I would like to retrieve it from the Java console. When the JVM crashes, the console is frozen and I cannot copy the contained text anymore. Is there way to pipe the Java console directly to a file or some other means of accessing the console output of a Java application? Update: I forgot to mention, without changing the code. I am a manual tester. Update 2: This is under Windows XP and it's actually a web start application. Piping the output of javaws jnlp-url does not work (empty file).

  I just recently learn Java and try to communicate to the device through USB port connection. I've have used C# with OpenNETCF which allows me to send file and retrieve file on the device through USB port; how can I achieve this with java? I seearch on stackoverflow thread, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/544507/how-to-communicate-with-a-usb-device-under-windows-and-java, the comment made by christoffer is to hack the native code, but I don't quite which native code api that he referred to. RAPI, maybe?
