  • How to position a div at the bottom of the viewport in standard and in quirks mode ??

    - by Gonzalo
Hi, I need to position a div to the bottom of my viewport. I start using position:fixed; bottom:0px; and that work just fine. But the thing that I'm working on gets injected via javascript in different pages. And some of the pages doesn't have a doctype defined, so in IE gets rendered like quircks mode, so the div doesn't get positioned correctly.. I've tried to position the div using javascript (document.documentElement.clientHeight) and that works fine. But when no doctype is defined, the "document.documentElement.clientHeight" is 0, so again the div doesn't get positioned correctly. Any idea on how to fix this problem? I'm only interested in IE 7 and 8. Thanks in advance Gonzalo

  • How should I build a privacy drop-down (select) menu?

    - by animuson
I'm trying to build something similar to Facebook's privacy selection menu, except without the 'custom' option. It will only list a few options such as 'show to all', 'show to friends only', or 'completely hidden'. Right now I'm thinking of using simple JavaScript to change a hidden input field to the new value they click on, so if they clicked on the division for 'show to friends only' it would change the corresponding field, say 'email_privacy', to 1. Is there a better way to do this or am I pretty much on track? P.S. I am not planning on using a select element, I was planning on building a custom drop-down menu using CSS since select elements are so highly non-customizable. I'm doing it this way to save space, rather than having this massive selection menu at the right which takes up a bunch of space. Note: I'm not really interested in using jQuery, that's just extra libraries and crap that I don't want to load. I can do it in JavaScript just as easily so I might as well use that.

  • Get HTML DOM with CSS

    - by 2x2p1p
    CSS can apply styles in elements through one ID, class or pseudo-selector, but I would like to get the HTML tree, something like in javascript: <script type = "text/javascript"> window.onload = function () { var div = document.getElementsByTagName ("div"); div[0].style.backgroundColor = "gray"; div[0].style.padding = "20px"; } </script> So for example: <style type = "text/css"> div[0] { /* Wrong but i tried :( */ background-color: gray; padding: 20px; } </style> <div > <div>...</div> </div> I'm tired of assign IDs to millions and millions of elements; is there a way to do this?

  • Catching the Facebook Login Event to change the HTML of the parent page

    - by Arkid
I am trying to create Facebook based login using Javascript. Once a person clicks a button he should get a div replaced by another div, if he is logged in to Facebook. However, if he is not logged in to Facebook he is asked his Facebook credentials and he logs in. However, we need the user to click the button once more for the div replacement to happen in this case. I want to know if there is a way in which I can catch the Facebook login event and change the div? Is polling a way or there is some other way out. I want to use only Javascript.

  • How to know the Geometry coordinates for google Maps

    - by Sam
I found a sample script on Google Code about : Google Maps Javascript API V3 Overlays - http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/overlays.html#OverlaysOverview And I want to apply this code to other countries (France, spain...) but I don't know where/how to find the Geometry code like in this script (see commented line) Here is the code: var australia = new google.maps.LatLng(-25, 133); map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map_canvas'), { center: australia, zoom: 4, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP }); layer = new google.maps.FusionTablesLayer({ query: { select: 'geometry', from: '815230' // This one }, styles: [{ polygonOptions: { fillColor: "#00FF00", fillOpacity: 0.3 } }, { where: "birds > 300", polygonOptions: { fillColor: "#0000FF" } }, { where: "population > 5", polygonOptions: { fillOpacity: 1.0 } }] }); layer.setMap(map); P.S. I tried to change the google.maps.LatLng(-25, 133) to France Lat&Long but this is used only to center the map on that position. Thank you for your help

  • Radio button inside anchor element is reset after jQuery click handler

    - by GrievousAngel
I have a situation where an element, of type radio, is contained in an element. The anchor element has a href but I want to override that behaviour by adding a jQuery 'click' handler to the element. The click handler makes the radio button inside it the selected one within the group. This all works when the anchor is clicked, however, when the radio button is clicked it appears that jQuery resets the selected radio to the previously selected one! Here is a the simplified page that duplicates the issue: <html> <head> <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.4/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $("#a1").click(function(event) { anchorClicked("a1"); return false; }); $("#a2").click(function(event) { anchorClicked("a2"); return false; }); }); function anchorClicked(anchorId) { $('#' + anchorId + ' input:radio').attr("checked", true); alert("Look at what is selected and what happens after the event when this dialog is closed!"); } </script> </head> <body> <form> <ul> <li id="li1"> <a id="a1" href="javascript:alert('default functionality')"> <input value="1" name="rb" type="radio" id="rb1"> <span>Details 1</span> </a> </li> <li id="li2"> <a id="a2" href="javascript:alert('default functionality')"> <input value="2" name="rb" type="radio" id="rb2"> <span>Details 2</span> </a> </li> </ul> </form> </body> Does anyone have any idea how I can prevent jQuery for resetting the radio button?

  • c# const in jQuery?

    - by Cristian Boariu
Hi guys, I have this piece of code in javascript: var catId = $.getURLParam("category"); In my asp.net and c# code for "category" query string i use a public const: public const string CATEGORY = "category"; so if i want to change the query string parameter to be "categoryTest" i only change this const and all the code is updated. Now the question is: how can i do something similar for the javascript i have in the same application (so i want to use the same constant)? I mean i want something like this: var catId = $.getURLParam(CQueryStringParameters.CATEGORY); but because there are none asp.net tags, my const is not interpreted... Any workaround?

  • Is it valid to replace http:// with // in a <script src="http://...">?

    - by Darryl Hein
I have the following tag: <script type="text/javascript" src="https://cdn.example.com/js_file.js"></script> In this case the site is HTTPS, but the site may also be just HTTP. (The JS file is on another domain.) I'm wondering if it's valid to do the following for convenience sake: <script type="text/javascript" src="//cdn.example.com/js_file.js"></script> I'm wondering if it's valid to remove the http: or https: ? It seems to work everywhere I have tested, but are there any cases where it doesn't work?

  • How do I parse an XML file that's on a different web server?

    - by Tim
I have a list of training dates saved into an XML file, and I have a little javascript file that parses all of the training dates and spits them out into a neatly formatted page. This solution was fine until we decided that we wanted another web-page on another sever to access the same XML file. Since I cannot use JavaScript to parse an XML file that's located on another server, I figured I'd just use an ASP script. However, when I run this following, I get a response that there are 0 nodes matching a value which should have several: <% Dim URL, objXML URL = "http://www.site.com/feed.xml" Set objXML = Server.CreateObject("MSXML2.DOMDocument.3.0") objXML.setProperty "ServerHTTPRequest", True objXML.async = False objXML.Load(URL) If objXML.parseError.errorCode <> 0 Then Response.Write(objXML.parseError.reason) Response.Write(objXML.parseError.errorCode) End If Response.Write(objXML.getElementsByTagName("era").length) %> My question is two-fold: Is there are a way I can use java-script to parse a remote XML file If not, why doesn't my code give me the proper response?

  • What is Erlang's concurrency model actually ?

    - by arun_suresh
I was reading a paper recently Why Events are Bad. The paper is a comparative study of Event based and thread based highly concurrent servers and finally concludes stating that Threads are better than events in that scenario. I find that I am not able to classify what sort of concurrency model erlang exposes. Erlang provides Light Weight Processes, but those processes are suspended most of the time until it has received some event/message of some sort. /Arun

  • Detect IE setting: check for newer versions of stored pages "never"

    - by xx
I understand there isn't a way to interrogate a users IE settings directly due to security reasons, but is there a way to derive this answer with some other mechanism? I would like to stop a user from using my site if the setting "Check for newer versions of stored pages" is set to "Never". Any suggestions? Is there a way I could test for this using javascript? An example of what I am trying to accomplish is this: While it is not possible to check IE settings to see if you are running a popup blocker, that is a way to "test" for a popup blocker via javascript. I am looking for something similiar but for the cache setting, not the popup blocker.

  • Why do escape characters break my Telerik call to ResponseScripts.Add(string)?

    - by David
this displays the expected javascript alert message box: RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add("alert('blahblahblah');"); while these does not: RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add("alert('blahblah \n blahblahblah');"); RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add("alert('blahblah \r blahblahblah');"); RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add("alert('blahblah \r\n blahblahblah');"); RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add("alert('blahblah \n\t blahblahblah');"); RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add(@"alert('blahblah \n blahblahblah');"); string message = "blahblahblah \n blahblahblah"; RadAjaxManager1.ResponseScripts.Add(message); I can't find any documentation on escape characters breaking this. I understand the single string argument to the Add method can be any script. No error is thrown, so my best guess is malformed javascript.

  • Does the <script> tag position in HTML affects performance of the webpage?

    - by Rahul Joshi
If the script tag is above or below the body in a HTML page, does it matter for the performance of a website? And what if used in between like this: <body> ..blah..blah.. <script language="JavaScript" src="JS_File_100_KiloBytes"> function f1() { .. some logic reqd. for manipulating contents in a webpage } </script> ... some text here too ... </body> Or is this better?: <script language="JavaScript" src="JS_File_100_KiloBytes"> function f1() { .. some logic reqd. for manipulating contents in a webpage } </script> <body> ..blah..blah.. ..call above functions on some events like onclick,onfocus,etc.. </body> Or this one?: <body> ..blah..blah.. ..call above functions on some events like onclick,onfocus,etc.. <script language="JavaScript" src="JS_File_100_KiloBytes"> function f1() { .. some logic reqd. for manipulating contents in a webpage } </script> </body> Need not tell everything is again in the <html> tag!! How does it affect performance of webpage while loading? Does it really? Which one is the best, either out of these 3 or some other which you know? And one more thing, I googled a bit on this, from which I went here: Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site and it suggests put scripts at the bottom, but traditionally many people put it in <head> tag which is above the <body> tag. I know it's NOT a rule but many prefer it that way. If you don't believe it, just view source of this page! And tell me what's the better style for best performance.

  • Is block style really this important?

    - by Jack Roscoe
I just watched a video of Douglas Crockford's presentation about his 2009 book JavaScript: The Good Parts. In the video, he explains that the following block is dangerous because it produces silent errors: return { ok: false }; And that it should actually be written like this (emphasising that although seemingly identical the behavioural difference is crucial): return { ok: false }; You can see his comments around 32 minutes into the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQVTIJBZook&feature=player_embedded#!&start=1920 I have not heard this before, and was wondering if this rule still applies or if this requirement in syntax has been overcome by JavaScript developments since this statement was made. I found this very interesting as I have NOT been writing my code this way, and wanted to check that this information was not out of date.

  • Dynamically added script causes problems

    - by Derk
I'm loading an html snippet via ajax to append to a div (I use jquery). A part of the html loaded with ajax looks like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?sensor=false"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> var options = { mapTypeId : google.maps.MapTypeId.TERRAIN } alert('test'); var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map-canvas'), options); </script> Then this is appended with contentBox.append(data); The problem is that this causes a black page in Firefox which keeps loading. In other browsers it seems that the code is not executed at all. Is there a solution for this?

  • Poll: Require Semicolons and Forbid Tables?

    - by George Bailey
There are a few very serious but opinionated and subjective arguments that I know of. Two of them are Whether or not to use semicolons in the event they are optional. There is a vote as here that also includes reasons Whether or not to use tables for non tabular data. There more information here Since the semicolon question arises often in JavaScript and the tables thing in HTML then there are probably many who run into both. I sort of expect a person who is strict with semicolons also to be strict about avoiding tables. I will post four CW answers here to vote on. Please vote what you think is right. If you want to talk about the reasons then please use Semicolons: Do you recommend using semicolons after every statement in JavaScript? Tables: Start your own question under the polls tag and follow the design of the semicolons question.
