• Exposing.NET assembly as COM 101

  I have trouble to expose a .NET assembly in COM. It seems that I must be missing some basic step because I think I followed all tutorials and documentation I found as well as common sense, but still when I do (in a test VBScript): Set o = CreateObject("MyLib.MyClass") It keeps saying that the object cannot be created. Here are the steps I have done: I have simple one method dummy class with no attributes. The class is in a class library which has "Make assembly COM-visible" ticked in Visual Studio. The class library is signed. The DLL is registered via RegAsm.exe with the /codebase parameter (I don’t want / cannot add the DLL to GAC). Just to be sure, I tried to copy the library to the same directory as the test VBScript, but it does not help. Edit: I should have mentioned that the I can instantiate the class in COM if I put the DLL into GAC.

• Integration Patterns with Azure Service Bus Relay, Part 1: Exposing the on-premise service

  We're in the process of delivering an enabling project to expose on-premise WCF services securely to Internet consumers. The Azure Service Bus Relay is doing the clever stuff, we register our on-premise service with Azure, consumers call into our .servicebus.windows.net namespace, and their requests are relayed and serviced on-premise. In theory it's all wonderfully simple; by using the relay we get lots of protocol options, free HTTPS and load balancing, and by integrating to ACS we get plenty of security options. Part of our delivery is a suite of sample consumers for the service - .NET, jQuery, PHP - and this set of posts will cover setting up the service and the consumers. Part 1: Exposing the on-premise service In theory, this is ultra-straightforward. In practice, and on a dev laptop it is - but in a corporate network with firewalls and proxies, it isn't, so we'll walkthrough some of the pitfalls. Note that I'm using the "old" Azure portal which will soon be out of date, but the new shiny portal should have the same steps available and be easier to use. We start with a simple WCF service which takes a string as input, reverses the string and returns it. The Part 1 version of the code is on GitHub here: on GitHub here: IPASBR Part 1. Configuring Azure Service Bus Start by logging into the Azure portal and registering a Service Bus namespace which will be our endpoint in the cloud. Give it a globally unique name, set it up somewhere near you (if you’re in Europe, remember Europe (North) is Ireland, and Europe (West) is the Netherlands), and  enable ACS integration by ticking "Access Control" as a service: Authenticating and authorizing to ACS When we try to register our on-premise service as a listener for the Service Bus endpoint, we need to supply credentials, which means only trusted service providers can act as listeners. We can use the default "owner" credentials, but that has admin permissions so a dedicated service account is better (Neil Mackenzie has a good post On Not Using owner with the Azure AppFabric Service Bus with lots of permission details). Click on "Access Control Service" for the namespace, navigate to Service Identities and add a new one. Give the new account a sensible name and description: Let ACS generate a symmetric key for you (this will be the shared secret we use in the on-premise service to authenticate as a listener), but be sure to set the expiration date to something usable. The portal defaults to expiring new identities after 1 year - but when your year is up *your identity will expire without warning* and everything will stop working. In production, you'll need governance to manage identity expiration and a process to make sure you renew identities and roll new keys regularly. The new service identity needs to be authorized to listen on the service bus endpoint. This is done through claim mapping in ACS - we'll set up a rule that says if the nameidentifier in the input claims has the value serviceProvider, in the output we'll have an action claim with the value Listen. In the ACS portal you'll see that there is already a Relying Party Application set up for ServiceBus, which has a Default rule group. Edit the rule group and click Add to add this new rule: The values to use are: Issuer: Access Control Service Input claim type: http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2005/05/identity/claims/nameidentifier Input claim value: serviceProvider Output claim type: net.windows.servicebus.action Output claim value: Listen When your service namespace and identity are set up, open the Part 1 solution and put your own namespace, service identity name and secret key into the file AzureConnectionDetails.xml in Solution Items, e.g: <azure namespace="sixeyed-ipasbr">    <!-- ACS credentials for the listening service (Part1):-->   <service identityName="serviceProvider"            symmetricKey="nuR2tHhlrTCqf4YwjT2RA2BZ/+xa23euaRJNLh1a/V4="/>  </azure> Build the solution, and the T4 template will generate the Web.config for the service project with your Azure details in the transportClientEndpointBehavior:           <behavior name="SharedSecret">             <transportClientEndpointBehavior credentialType="SharedSecret">               <clientCredentials>                 <sharedSecret issuerName="serviceProvider"                               issuerSecret="nuR2tHhlrTCqf4YwjT2RA2BZ/+xa23euaRJNLh1a/V4="/>               </clientCredentials>             </transportClientEndpointBehavior>           </behavior> , and your service namespace in the Azure endpoint:         <!-- Azure Service Bus endpoints -->          <endpoint address="sb://sixeyed-ipasbr.servicebus.windows.net/net"                   binding="netTcpRelayBinding"                   contract="Sixeyed.Ipasbr.Services.IFormatService"                   behaviorConfiguration="SharedSecret">         </endpoint> The sample project is hosted in IIS, but it won't register with Azure until the service is activated. Typically you'd install AppFabric 1.1 for Widnows Server and set the service to auto-start in IIS, but for dev just navigate to the local REST URL, which will activate the service and register it with Azure. Testing the service locally As well as an Azure endpoint, the service has a WebHttpBinding for local REST access:         <!-- local REST endpoint for internal use -->         <endpoint address="rest"                   binding="webHttpBinding"                   behaviorConfiguration="RESTBehavior"                   contract="Sixeyed.Ipasbr.Services.IFormatService" /> Build the service, then navigate to: http://localhost/Sixeyed.Ipasbr.Services/FormatService.svc/rest/reverse?string=abc123 - and you should see the reversed string response: If your network allows it, you'll get the expected response as before, but in the background your service will also be listening in the cloud. Good stuff! Who needs network security? Onto the next post for consuming the service with the netTcpRelayBinding.  Setting up network access to Azure But, if you get an error, it's because your network is secured and it's doing something to stop the relay working. The Service Bus relay bindings try to use direct TCP connections to Azure, so if ports 9350-9354 are available *outbound*, then the relay will run through them. If not, the binding steps down to standard HTTP, and issues a CONNECT across port 443 or 80 to set up a tunnel for the relay. If your network security guys are doing their job, the first option will be blocked by the firewall, and the second option will be blocked by the proxy, so you'll get this error: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: Unable to reach sixeyed-ipasbr.servicebus.windows.net via TCP (9351, 9352) or HTTP (80, 443) - and that will probably be the start of lots of discussions. Network guys don't really like giving servers special permissions for the web proxy, and they really don't like opening ports, so they'll need to be convinced about this. The resolution in our case was to put up a dedicated box in a DMZ, tinker with the firewall and the proxy until we got a relay connection working, then run some traffic which the the network guys monitored to do a security assessment afterwards. Along the way we hit a few more issues, diagnosed mainly with Fiddler and Wireshark: System.Net.ProtocolViolationException: Chunked encoding upload is not supported on the HTTP/1.0 protocol - this means the TCP ports are not available, so Azure tries to relay messaging traffic across HTTP. The service can access the endpoint, but the proxy is downgrading traffic to HTTP 1.0, which does not support tunneling, so Azure can’t make its connection. We were using the Squid proxy, version 2.6. The Squid project is incrementally adding HTTP 1.1 support, but there's no definitive list of what's supported in what version (here are some hints). System.ServiceModel.Security.SecurityNegotiationException: The X.509 certificate CN=servicebus.windows.net chain building failed. The certificate that was used has a trust chain that cannot be verified. Replace the certificate or change the certificateValidationMode. The evocation function was unable to check revocation because the revocation server was offline. - by this point we'd given up on the HTTP proxy and opened the TCP ports. We got this error when the relay binding does it's authentication hop to ACS. The messaging traffic is TCP, but the control traffic still goes over HTTP, and as part of the ACS authentication the process checks with a revocation server to see if Microsoft’s ACS cert is still valid, so the proxy still needs some clearance. The service account (the IIS app pool identity) needs access to: www.public-trust.com mscrl.microsoft.com We still got this error periodically with different accounts running the app pool. We fixed that by ensuring the machine-wide proxy settings are set up, so every account uses the correct proxy: netsh winhttp set proxy proxy-server="http://proxy.x.y.z" - and you might need to run this to clear out your credential cache: certutil -urlcache * delete If your network guys end up grudgingly opening ports, they can restrict connections to the IP address range for your chosen Azure datacentre, which might make them happier - see Windows Azure Datacenter IP Ranges. After all that you've hopefully got an on-premise service listening in the cloud, which you can consume from pretty much any technology.

• How can I keep the cpu temp low?

  I have an HP pavilion dv7, I'm using ubuntu 12.04 so the overheating problem with sandybridge cpu is a lot better. However my laptop is still becoming too hot to keep on my legs. The problem is that the fan wait too much before starting, so the medium temp is too hight. When I'm using windows 7 the laptop is room-temperature cold, I've absolutely no problem. On windows the fan is always spinning very low & very silently so the heat is continuously removed, without reaching an unconfortable temp. How can I force the computer to act like that also on ubuntu? • [SOLVED] Store files in C# EXE file

  It is actually useful for me to store some files in EXE to copy to selected location. I'm generating HTML and JS files and need to copy some CSS, JS and GIFs. Snippet System.IO.File.WriteAllBytes(@"C:\MyFile.bin", ProjectNamespace.Properties.Resources.MyFile); doesn't work for me! On "WriteAllBytes" it says: "cannot convert from 'System.Drawing.Bitmap' to 'byte[]'" for image and "cannot convert from 'string' to 'byte[]'" for text file. Help! UPDATE: Solved below.

• Windows 7 explorer always crashes, opens small "Personalized Settings" window

  My Windows 7 desktop PC, built by me, started acting very weird in the last couple of days. I use it quite often, about half of the time through TeamViewer. Explorer would crash and restart randomly, almost always through TeamViewer. This made me suspect that TeamViewer was the problem but I have reproduced it with and without TeamViewer several times. The only way I can seem to get the problem not to occur is by booting into Safe Mode. I have used CCleaner and Malwarebytes to make sure it wasn't a registry error or malware causing the problem, and I have tried the fix in the seemly related issue here as well every other fix I have found online including removing security updates KB980408 and KB2926765 as well as using "sfc /scannow" and a bunch of other things I can't remember. More recently when I try to start explorer it is popping up a small window that says "Personalized Settings" on the top, but is completely empty and crashes instantly. The only way I can get it to disappear is to kill the explorer.exe process. I wish I could take a screenshot but I can't seem to open paint or even find the exe. I have tried restarting it, I have tried starting it while the personalized settings window was open. I have come up with two lists of processes the first is the list of active processes when I boot into safe mode and explorer seems to work fine. The second is the list of processes that I can narrow it down to in normal boot and still replicate the problem. There is one process that I can't seem to close. NisSrv.exe which is describes as "Microsoft Network Realtime Inspection Service". When I try to close the process NisSrv.exe it says "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." When I try to close the related service it gives the same message. Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. My explorer tab in Autoruns seen below along with the error when I try to uncheck something. I should add that I seem to be able to disable shell extensions with ShellExView but I still can't get explorer to start correctly. EXPLORER SHELL UPDATE - See screenshot below I can access the explorer right click menu through a file manager I downloaded called NexusFile, but still no luck starting explorer. Another round of errors that I am getting regarding Windows Search Service The search service has detected corrupted data files in the index {id=4700}. The service will attempt to automatically correct this problem by rebuilding the index. Details: The content index catalog is corrupt. (HRESULT : 0xc0041801) (0xc0041801) followed by The Windows Search Service is being stopped because there is a problem with the indexer: The catalog is corrupt. • IE8 error with Certificate

  I have installed a certificate with multiple Common Names on a Red Hat server in the jks format. The web page can be accessed with Firefox and the certificate gets imported. However, IE8 gives the error "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I added the cert with MMC and its properties shows "This certificate has an nonvalid digital signature.". Also the cert doesn't have the URL of the web page in it. The cert does have a valid signature in Firefox and the URL mismatch is ignored. How can I get IE8 to accept it. This cert is required for another Application (where it works fine) and cannot be changed except to change the format. I already have it in PKCS12, jks and pem formats.

• How to Use an Environment Variable as an Environment Variable Name

  Hi, In my pursuit of a solution to another environment-variable/batch-file related problem, I have once again come across a problem I have visited before (but cannot for the life of me remember how, or even if I solved it). Say you have two BAT files (or one batch file and the command line). How can one pass an environment variable name to the other so that it can read the variable? The following example does not work: A.BAT: @call b.bat path B.BAT: @echo %%1% > A.BAT > %1 > B.BAT path > %1 It is easy enough to pass the environment variable name, but the callee cannot seem to use it. (I don’t remember if or how I dealt with this the last time it came up, but I suspect it required the less-than-ideal use of redirecting temporary BAT files and calling them and such.) Any ideas? Thanks.

• Android Market: Application not visible on some Devices

  Hello, i have written an application that needs to process outgoing calls. Everything works fine, the application has already a few hundred downloads, but now i get feedback from people who would like to download it, yet cannot find it. I have done some tests and have found that the permission "PROCESS_OUTGOING_CALLS" seems to be responsible for this. If i include it in an app, people with branded phones (at least in Germany) cannot find it, as soon as i remove this permission, everything is fine (when i re-insert it again, the app vanishes again) The weird thing is, that those users can see other apps which use this permission in the market. I have compared my manifest file to outputs from other manifest files and cannot understand why it doesn't work. • jQuery global variable best practice & options?

  Currently I am working on a legacy web page that uses a ton of javascript, jquery, microsoft client javascript, and other libraries. The bottom line - I cannot rewrite the entire page from scratch as the business cannot justify it. So... it is what it is. Anyway, I need to pollute (I really tried not too) the global namespace with a variable. There are the three options I was thinking - Just store/retrieve it using a normal javascript declaration - var x = 0; Utilize jQuery to store/retrieve the value in a DOM tag - $("body").data("x", 0); Utilize a hidden form field, and set/retrieve the value with jQuery - $("whatever").data("x", 0); What does everyone think? Is there a better way? I looked at the existing pile of code and I do not believe the variable can be scoped in a function.

• InfoPath Repeating Group with Data from SharePoint and User Input

  I have a series of questions which are pulled from a SharePoint list and loaded into a repeating section. The section has three elements, the Question # (from SharePoint), and Question itself (from SharePoint), and a drop down box Yes/No (NOT from SharePoint)... The repeating group portion works just fine, it is pulling all Question # and Questions from the SharePoint site, but I cannot bind the drop down box (yes/no) to any sort of local data source in order to record the information. Essentially what I have is a dynamically generated form which pulls questions off a SharePoint and a user will answer Yes or No for each question. I cannot associate the Yes/No drop down with anything because it resides within a Repeating section... Thanks for any help!

  I'm implementing a custom membership provider, and everything seems to go swimmingly until I create a MembershipUser object. At that point, I receive the error: The membership provider name specified is invalid.   I have a web site that built on Visual studio 2008 and i need to run it from my computer (Win 7 Ultimate) as a server I tried to publish it to IIS and this is simply not working and i have the flowing error : Error Summary HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false". any one can help?

• ASP.NET MVC 2 - Account controller not found

  Hi all, I've recently created an ASP.NET MVC 2 application, which works perfectly in the development environment. However, when I deploy it to the server (123-reg Premium Hosting), I can access all of the expected areas - except the Account controller (www.host.info/Account). This then attempts to redirect to the Error.aspx page (www.host.info/Shared/Error.aspx) which it cannot find. I've checked that all of the views have been published, and they're all in the correct place. It seems bizarre that two other controllers can be accessed with no problems, whereas the Account controller cannot be found. I have since renamed the AccountController to SecureController, and all of the dependencies, to no avail. The problem with not being able to find the Error.aspx page also occurs on the development environment. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

• Using numeric_limits::max() in constant expressions

  Hello, I would like to define inside a class a constant which value is the maximum possible int. Something like this: class A { ... static const int ERROR_VALUE = std::numeric_limits<int>::max(); ... } This declaration fails to compile with the following message: numeric.cpp:8: error: 'std::numeric_limits::max()' cannot appear in a constant-expression numeric.cpp:8: error: a function call cannot appear in a constant-expression I understand why this doesn't work, but two things look weird to me: It seems to me a natural decision to use the value in constant expressions. Why did the language designers decide to make max() a function thus not allowing this usage? The spec claims in 18.2.1 that For all members declared static const in the numeric_limits template, specializations shall define these values in such a way that they are usable as integral constant expressions. Doesn't it mean that I should be able to use it in my scenario and doesn't it contradict the error message? Thank you.

I have a custom WCF/WIF STS (RP-STS) that provides security tokens to my WCF services RP-STS is an "Active" STS RP-STS acts as a claims transformation STS RP-STS trusts tokens from many customer-specific identity provider STSes (IdP-STS) When a WCF Client connects to a service it should authenticate with it's local IdP-STS The reading that I've done describes this as Home Realm Discovery. HRD is usually described within the context of web applications and Passive STSes. My questions is, for my situation, does the logic for choosing an IdP-STS endpoint belong in the RP-STS or the WCF Client application? I thought it belonged in the RP-STS, but I cannot figure out the configuration to make this happen. RP-STS has a single endpoint, but I cannot figure out how to add more than one trusted issuer per endpoint. Any guidance on this would be very appreciated (I'm out of useful keywords to Google.) Also, if I'm way off please offer alternative approaches. Thanks!

After some small changes (FragmentActivity - SherlockFragmentActivity, getActionBar() - getSupportActionBar(), imports) it all compiled nicely. • Visual Studio 2005 - Debugger stopped working.

  More fun and pain with Visual Studio. Visual Studio 2005. About two months ago, I started an assignment. In my role, I cannot install or configure development software. Trust me this has given me plenty of heartburn. No IIS is involved here, just File Sharing. That being said, when I first started I had a problem with my debugger not working. The debugger just stopped. I was able to get it working. Now the problem has returned and I am pulling every last hair on my head. Almost none of my symbols loads. It can't find the PDB files. In Debugger options, I checked the Symbol section. My symbol file location entry is completely blank. ? I don't know why. I did not touch this prior to the problem occurring. I have cleared the Temporary ASP.NET folders. I should note, I created a new project. Recreated my files manually by importing them. The debugger worked 5 times and died. I'm at a loss of what to do next? The obvious has been checked: The project is set to Debug Configuration Manager Configuration Debug Platform .NET Build : checked. Web.Config: I have attempted to manually attach to the Webdev process from the Debug window and that doesn't work. I have googled this and this problem seems to occur quite a bit.

• Flash receives mouse events under an HTML element when opacity set

  I have an HTML document with a Flash object and an absolutely positioned HTML element above it. If I set the HTML element's opacity CSS property to any value less than 1, the Flash object (that is actually covered) receives mouse events. This problem cannot be reproduced with pure HTML elements. Furthermore, Flash only receives hover events, so I cannot click below the layer. I put a demonstration of the problem online. I get this behavior in Firefox 3.6, Safari 4.0 and Chrome 5.0 in both Mac and Windows. Flash plugin version 10 is installed. Is it a bug or the the normal and expected behavior? If the latter, then how can I prevent Flash receiving events when it is covered with a translucent layer?

• How to solve rake tasks deprecation on the rails plugin?

  Because of the concept introduced in here, Rails::Plugin is nothing more than a Rails::Engine, but since it's loaded too late in the boot process, it does not have the same configuration powers as a bare Rails::Engine. Opposite to Rails::Railtie and Rails::Engine, you are not supposed to inherit from Rails::Plugin. Rails::Plugin is automatically configured to be an engine by simply placing inside vendor/plugins. Since this is done automatically, you actually cannot declare a Rails::Engine inside your Plugin, otherwise it would cause the same files to be loaded twice. This means that if you want to ship an Engine as gem it cannot be used as plugin and vice-versa. Besides this conceptual difference, the only difference between Rails::Engine and Rails::Plugin is that plugins automatically load the file "init.rb" at the plugin root during the boot process. rake tasks in the rails plugins are deprecated and it is advised to use lib/tasks instead. How to solve this? Can I just simply move the plugin's tasks to the lib/tasks?

  I made an automation Add-In for Excel, and I made several functions (formulas). I have a class which header looks like this (it is COM visible): [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.AutoDual)] [ComVisible(true)] public class Functions {} In a list of methods, I see: ToString(), Equals(), GetHashCode() and GetType() methods. Since all methods of my class are COM visible, I should somehow hide those 4. I succeeded with 3 of them: ToString(), Equals(), GetHashCode() but GetType() cannot be overriden. Here is what I did with 3 of them: [ComVisible(false)] public override string ToString() { return base.ToString(); } [ComVisible(false)] public override bool Equals(object obj) { return base.Equals(obj); } [ComVisible(false)] public override int GetHashCode() { return base.GetHashCode(); } This doesn't work: [ComVisible(false)] public override Type GetType() { return base.GetType(); } Here is the error message in Visual Studio when compile: ..GetType()': cannot override inherited member 'object.GetType()' because it is not marked virtual, abstract, or override So, what should I do to hide the GetType() method from COM?
