• About global.asax and the events there

  So what i'm trying to understand is the whole global.asax events. I doing a simple counter that records website visits. I am using MSSQL. Basicly i have two ints. totalNumberOfUsers - The total visist from begining. currentNumberOfUsers - Total of users viewing the site at the moment. So the way i understand global.asax events is that every time someone comes to the site "Session_Start" is fired once. So once per user. "Application_Start" is fired only once the first time someone comes to the site. But when the session is over the currentNumberOfUsers is decremented with 1. If i go to the site with 3 types of browsers with the same computer i should have 3 in hits on both counters. Doing this again after hours i should have 3 in current and 6 in total, right ? The way its working right now is the current goes up to 2 and the total is incremented on every postback on IE and Chrome but not on firefox. And one last thing, is this the same thing ? • Load balancing using Mina example with Java DSL

  So, recently I started learning Camel. As part of the process I decided to go through all the examples (listed HERE and available when you DOWNLOAD the package with all the examples and docs) and to see what I could learn. One of the examples, Load Balancing using Mina caught my attention because it uses a Mina in different JVM's and it simulates a load balancer with round robin. I have a few problems with this example. First it uses the Spring DSL, instead of the Java DSL which my project uses and which I find a lot easier to understand now (mainly also because I am used to it). So the first question: is there a version of this example using only the Java DSL instead of the Spring DSL for the routes and the beans? My second questions is code related. The description states, and I quote: Within this demo every ten seconds, a Report object is created from the Camel load balancer server. This object is sent by the Camel load balancer to a MINA server where the object is then serialized. One of the two MINA servers (localhost:9991 and localhost:9992) receives the object and enriches the message by setting the field reply of the Report object. The reply is sent back by the MINA server to the client, which then logs the reply on the console. So, from what I read, I understand that the MINA server 1 (per example) receives a report from the loadbalancer, changes it, and then it sends that report back to some invisible client. Upon checking the code, I see no client java class or XML and when I run, the server simply posts the results on the command line. Where is the client ?? What is this client? What if I wanted to send message to a third MINA server? How would I do it? (I would have to add a new route, and send it to the URI of the 3rd server correct?) I know most of these questions may sound dumb, but I would appreciate if anyone could help me. A Java DSL version of this would really help me.

• Dynamically loading modules in Python (+ multi processing question)

  I am writing a Python package which reads the list of modules (along with ancillary data) from a configuration file. I then want to iterate through each of the dynamically loaded modules and invoke a do_work() function in it which will spawn a new process, so that the code runs ASYNCHRONOUSLY in a separate process. At the moment, I am importing the list of all known modules at the beginning of my main script - this is a nasty hack I feel, and is not very flexible, as well as being a maintenance pain. This is the function that spawns the processes. I will like to modify it to dynamically load the module when it is encountered. The key in the dictionary is the name of the module containing the code: def do_work(work_info): for (worker, dataset) in work_info.items(): #import the module defined by variable worker here... # [Edit] NOT using threads anymore, want to spawn processes asynchronously here... #t = threading.Thread(target=worker.do_work, args=[dataset]) # I'll NOT dameonize since spawned children need to clean up on shutdown # Since the threads will be holding resources #t.daemon = True #t.start() Question 1 When I call the function in my script (as written above), I get the following error: AttributeError: 'str' object has no attribute 'do_work' Which makes sense, since the dictionary key is a string (name of the module to be imported). When I add the statement: import worker before spawning the thread, I get the error: ImportError: No module named worker This is strange, since the variable name rather than the value it holds are being used - when I print the variable, I get the value (as I expect) whats going on? Question 2 As I mentioned in the comments section, I realize that the do_work() function written in the spawned children needs to cleanup after itself. My understanding is to write a clean_up function that is called when do_work() has completed successfully, or an unhandled exception is caught - is there anything more I need to do to ensure resources don't leak or leave the OS in an unstable state? Question 3 If I comment out the t.daemon flag statement, will the code stil run ASYNCHRONOUSLY?. The work carried out by the spawned children are pretty intensive, and I don't want to have to be waiting for one child to finish before spawning another child. BTW, I am aware that threading in Python is in reality, a kind of time sharing/slicing - thats ok Lastly is there a better (more Pythonic) way of doing what I'm trying to do? [Edit] After reading a little more about Pythons GIL and the threading (ahem - hack) in Python, I think its best to use separate processes instead (at least IIUC, the script can take advantage of multiple processes if they are available), so I will be spawning new processes instead of threads. I have some sample code for spawning processes, but it is a bit trivial (using lambad functions). I would like to know how to expand it, so that it can deal with running functions in a loaded module (like I am doing above). • "didChangeSection:" NSfetchedResultsController delegate method not being called

  I have a standard split view controller, with a detail view and a table view. Pressing a button in the detail view can cause the an object to change its placement in the table view's ordering. This works fine, as long as the resulting ordering change doesn't result in a section being added or removed. I.e. an object can change it's ordering in a section or switch from one section to another. Those ordering changes work correctly without problems. But, if the object tries to move to a section that doesn't exist yet, or is the last object to leave a section (therefore requiring the section its leaving to be removed), then the application crashes. NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate has methods to handle sections being added and removed that should be called in those cases. But those delegate methods aren't being called for some reason. Based on the Apple's NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate documentation "didChangeSection" should have been called before "didChangeObject", which would have prevented the exception causing the crash. So I guess the question is how do I assure that didChangeSection gets called? Thanks in advance for any help!

• jQuery $.ajax response empty, but only in Chrome

  I've exhausted every avenue of research to solve this one so hopefully someone else will think of something I just didn't. Relatively straight forward setup, I have a html page with some javascript that makes an ajax request to a URL (in the same domain) the java web app in the background does its stuff and returns a partial html page (no html, head or body tags, just the content) which should be inserted at a particular point in the page. All sounds pretty easy and the code I have works in IE, Firefox and Safari, but not in Chrome. In Chrome the target element just ends up empty and if I look at the resource request in Chromes developer tools the response content is also empty. All very confusing, I've tried a myriad of things to solve it and I'm just out of ideas. • Including objects from external .js files

  I have been searching for many hours over several days for this answer and though there are many topics on how to include files in a project (also here at Stack Overflow), I have not yet found THE solution to my problem. I'm working on a project where I want to include one single object at a time, from many different files (I do not want to include the files themselves, only their content). All the object in all the files have the same name, only the content is different. It is important that I do not get a SCRIPT tag in the head section of the page as all the content from the files will have the same names. None of the files will have functions anyways, only one single object, that will need to be loaded one at the time and then discarded when the next element is loaded.   Hi there, I'm trying to implement the Unit of Work/Repository pattern, as described here: http://blogs.msdn.com/adonet/archive/2009/06/16/using-repository-and-unit-of-work-patterns-with-entity-framework-4-0.aspx This requires each Repository to accept an IUnitOfWork implementation, eg an EF datacontext extended with a partial class to add an IUnitOfWork interface. I'm actually using .net 3.5, not 4.0. My basic Data Access constructor looks like this: public DataAccessLayer(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, IRealtimeRepository realTimeRepository) { this.unitOfWork = unitOfWork; this.realTimeRepository = realTimeRepository; } So far, so good. What I'm trying to do is add Dependency Injection using the Unity Framework. Getting the EF data context to be created with Unity was an adventure, as it had trouble resolving the constructor - what I did in the end was to create another constructor in my partial class with a new overloaded constructor, and marked that with [InjectionConstructor] [InjectionConstructor] public communergyEntities(string connectionString, string containerName) :this() { (I know I need to pass the connection string to the base object, that can wait until once I've got all the objects initialising correctly) So, using this technique, I can happily resolve my entity framework object as an IUnitOfWork instance thus: using (IUnityContainer container = new UnityContainer()) { container.RegisterType<IUnitOfWork, communergyEntities>(); container.Configure<InjectedMembers>() .ConfigureInjectionFor<communergyEntities>( new InjectionConstructor("a", "b")) DataAccessLayer target = container.Resolve<DataAccessLayer>(); Great. What I need to do now is create the reference to the repository object for the DataAccessLayer - the DAL only needs to know the interface, so I'm guessing that I need to instantiate it as part of the Unity Resolve statement, passing it the appropriate IUnitOfWork interface. In the past, I would have just passed the Repository constructor the db connection string, and it would have gone away, created a local Entity Framework object and used that just for the lifetime of the Repository method. This is different, in that I create an Entity Framework instance as an IUnitOfWork implementation during the Unity Resolve statement, and it's that instance I need to pass into the constructor of the Repository - is that possible, and if so, how? I'm wondering if I could make the Repository a property and mark it as a Dependency, but that still wouldn't solve the problem of how to create the Repository with the IUnitOfWork object that the DAL is being Resolved with I'm not sure if I've understood this pattern correctly, and will happily take advice on the best way to implement it - Entity Framework is staying, but Unity can be swapped out if not the best approach. • GWT & HTML5 Video in Mobile Safari

  I'm trying to code a site in GWT that plays videos with HTML5. Everything works great on the desktop, but mobile Safari on both the iPhone and iPad do not play the video. I can play a video using Video for Everybody. I've even copied the code to my own plain HTML page, and it works flawlessly. If I serve that same code via a GWT widget, mobile safari will not play the video. On the iPhone I see a gray box with a prohibitory sign around the play button, and on the iPad it shows up as a black box. I've made sure my doctype is <!DOCTYPE html>, but I don't know where else to start debugging. Perhaps it it because the code is injected via javascript? Any pointers on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated. • ASP.NET Web Service Throws 401 (unauthorized) Error

  Hi Experts, I have this .NET application to be run in an intranet environment. It is configured so that it requires Windows Authentication before you can access the website (Anonymous access is disabled). This website calls a web service (enable anonymous access) and the web service calls the DB. We do have a token-based authentication between the web application and the web service to secure the communication between them. The issue I'm facing is that when I deploy this to production, I'm having an intermittent issue whereby the communication between the web application and the web service failed. The 401 issue was thrown. This is actually working fine in our QA environment. Is this an issue with Active Directory? Or could it be an isssue with FQDN as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861? The weirdest thing is that this is happening intermittently when tested in both on the server itself and a remote workstation in my client's environment.   I am running a web application on BEA Weblogic 9.2. Until recently, we were using JDK 1.5.0_04, with JAI 1.1.2_01 and Image IO 1.1. In some circumstances (we never figured out exactly why), when we were processing large images (but not that large - a few MB), the JVM would crash without any error message or stack trace or anything. This didn't happen much in production, but enough to be a nuisance and eventually we were able to reproduce it. We decided to switch to JRockit90 1.5.0_04 and we were no longer able to reproduce the problem in our test environment, so we thought we had it licked. • Java Copy/Paste org.w3c.dom.Node between two running copies of the same program

  I have a program that shows a tree representation of an XML file. Using a number of sources online I have Copy/Paste within a single instance of the program working. I am using the system Clipboard. What I need though is to be able to copy a node from one instance of the program and paste to a different instance of the same program. I have tried a number of different options, all resulting in the same behavior. When pasting from within the same application the clipboardContent contains a "transferable" object with the correct data along with an isLocal set to "true". When I perform the copy and then attempt the paste from another instance of the same program running the clipboardContent contains a "flavorsToData" HashMap and "flavors" values, the check for isDataFlavorSupported fails (never hits my custom class that represents the new flavor). I have tried using different values for the requestor object in the getContents() call. Likewise I have tried a few different ClipboardOwners for the setContent() call. Neither seem to change the behavior in any way. I am sorely tempted to convert the node that is being copied back into a textual XML format, and then on the paste convert back to the DOM model, but would rather not if possible. • how to organise my abstraction?

  I have a problem that I can't decide how to best handle, so I'm asking for advice. Please bear with me if my question isn't clear, it is possiblybecause I'm not sure exacly how to solve! I have a set of function that I have in a class. These function are a set of lowest commonality. To be able to run this I need to generate certain info. But this info can arrive with my class from one of 2 routes. I'll try to summarise my situation.... Lets say that I have a class as follows. public class onHoliday(){ private Object modeOfTravel; private Object location; public onHoliday(Object vehicle, Location GPScoords) { private boolean haveFun(){//function to have fun, needs 4 people }//end haveFun() } } Lets imagine I can get to my holiday either by car or by bike. my haveFun() function is dependant my type of vehicle. But only loosely. I have another function that determines my vehicle type, and extracts the required values. for example if I send a car I may get 4 people in one go, but if I send I bike I need at least 2 to get the required 4 I have currently 2 options: Overload my constructor, so as I can send either 2 bikes or a single car into it, then I can call one of 2 intermediate functions (to get the names of my 4 people for instance) before I haveFun() - this is what I am currently doing. split the 2 constructors into 2 separate classes, and repeat my haveFun() in a third class, that becomes an object of my 2 other classes. my problem with this is that my intermediate functions are all but a few lines of code, and I don't want to have them in a separate file! (I allways put classes in separate files!) Please note, my haveFun() isn't something that I'm going to need outside of these 2 classes, or even being onHoliday (ie. there is no chance of me doing some haveFun() over a weekend or of an evening!). I have though about putting haveFun() into an interface, but it seems a bit worthless having an interface with only a single method! Even then I would have to have the method in both of the classes -one for bike and another for car! I have thought about having my onHoliday class accepting any object type, but then I don't want someone accidentally sending in a boat to my onHoliday class (imagine I can't swim, so its not about to happen). It may be important to note that my onHoliday class is package private, and final. It in fact is only accessed via other 'private methods' in other classes, and has only private methods itself.   I am following the "Presentation Model" design pattern suggested by Martin Fowler for my GUI architecture in a Windows Forms project. A view then simply projects the state of the presentation model onto the glass...." - Martin Fowler Read more about this pattern at www.martinfowler.com/eaaDev/PresentationModel.html I am finding the concept very fluid and easy to understand except this one issue of data binding RadioButtons to properties on the Data/Domain object. Suposing I have a Windows Form with 3 radio buttons to depict some "Mode" options as - Auto Manual Import How can I use boolean properties on Data/Domain Objects to DataBind to these buttons? I have tried many ways but to no avail. For example I would like to code like - rbtnAutoMode.DataBindings.Add("Text", myBusinessObject, "IsAutoMode"); rbtnManualMode.DataBindings.Add("Text", myBusinessObject, "IsManualMode"); rbtnImportMode.DataBindings.Add("Text", myBusinessObject, "IsImportMode"); There should be a fourth property like "SelectedMode" on the data/domain object which at the end should depict a single value like "SelectedMode = Auto". I am trying to update this property when any of the "IsAutoMode", "IsManualMode" or "IsImportMode" is changed, e.g. through the property setters. I have INotifyPropertyChanged implemented on my data/domain object so, updating any data/domain object property automatically updates my UI controls, that's not an issue. There is a good example of binding 2 radio buttons here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/344964/how-do-i-use-databinding-with-windows-forms-radio-buttons but I am missing the link while implementing the same with 3 buttons. I am having very erratic behaviors for the Radio Buttons. I hope I was able to explain reasonably. I am actually in a hurry and could not put a detailed code on post, but any help in this regard is appreciated. There is a simple solution to this issue by exposing a method like - public void SetMode(Modes mode) { this._selectedMode = mode; } which could be called from the "CheckedChanged" event of the Radio Buttons from the UI and would perfectly set the "SelectedMode" on the business object, but I need to stretch the limits to verify whether this can be done by DataBinding.
