  Hi everyone. Given : An array A[1..n] of real numbers. Goal : An array D[1..n] such that D[i] = min{ distance(i,j) : A[j] > A[i] } or some default value (like 0) when there is no higher-valued element. I would really like to use Euclidean distance here. Example : A = [-1.35, 3.03, 0.73, -0.06, 0.71, -0.21, -0.12, 1.49, 1.41, 1.42] D = [1, 0, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 6, 1, 2] Is there any way to beat the obvious O(n^2) solution? The only progress I've made so far is that D[i] = 1 whenever A[i] is not a local maxima. I've been thinking a lot and have come up with NOTHING. I hope to eventually extend this to 2D (so A and D are matrices).

• Super slow Western Digial External hard drive

  I have 2TB of WD external hard drive. I use windows Vista 32x. on DELL laptop Latitude D630 and connect through USB cable. When I transfer from my C drive to external hard drive it transfer only 3KB/sec. It take 30min to transfer 6MB. It is useless at the moment. Can anyone help me how to speed up please.   As the title suggests, I am curious as to why so many people tout Git as a superior alternative to branching/merging over SVN. I am primarily curious because SVN merging sucks and I would like an alternative solution. How does Git handle merging better? How does it work? For example, in SVN, if I have the following line: Hello World! Then user1 changes it to: Hello World!1 then user2 changes it to: Hello World!12 Then user2 commits, then user1 commits, SVN would give you a conflict. Can Git resolve something simple as this?

  I am a beginner at java, and I am trying to create two strings and compare each character. If there is a matching character or characters, the code has to print out the length of each string, without the matching characters. For example, if one string is "super," and the other is "perfect," the program should interpret the strings as superfect, and print out 9 However, if there is no matching part, like pencil and eraser, the code should printout 12, which is the length of two strings combined. Right now, I am having a problem with comparing each character, since I tried to use if(input_word.compareToIgnoreCase(input_word2) != 0) but it only compared the string as a whole.. any suggestion?   I'm having some difficulties with the following problem: I'm making a little game where you're at a specific spot and each spot has each some possible directions. The available directions are N(ord),E(ast),S,W . I use the function getPosDirections to get the possible directions of that spot. The function returns the directions into an ArrayList<String> e.g. for spot J3: [E,W] Now the game goes like this: 2 dice will be rolled so you get a number between 2 and 12, this number represents the number of steps you can make. What I want is an ArrayList of all the possible routes e.g.: I throw 3 and I'm currently at spot J3: [[E,N,E],[E,N,S],[E,S,E],[E,S,S],[W,N,E],[W,N,S],[W,S,E],[W,S,S]] How would obtain the last mentioned Array(list)?

  Would this code be considered bad practice: <div id="sidebar"> <% =DisplayMeetings(12) %> </div> This is a snippet of code from the default.aspx of a small web app I have worked on. It works perfectly well, runs very fast, but as always, I am aware of the fact that just because it works, doesn't mean it is OK. Basically, the DisplayMeetings subroutine outputs a bunch of formatted HTML (an unordered list actually), with no formatting, just the requisite html, and then my CSS performs all the necessary formatting. The data for generating the list comes from an SQL server database (the parameter controls how many rows to return) and I am using stored procedures and datareader for fast access. This keeps my front-end extraordinary simple and clean, imho, and lets me do all the work in VB or C# in a separate module. I could of course use a databound repeater (and probably 6 or more other methods) of accomplishing the same thing, but are they any better? Other than loosing the design-time features of VS2010?

All I want is to add them together so that I've got a single array with summed values for each month. Here's an example with three values: [1,2,3] and [4,5,6] = [5,7,9] The best I could come up with was: [[1,2,3],[4,5,6]].transpose.map{|arr| arr.inject{|sum, element| sum+element}} #=> [5,7,9] Is there a better way of doing this? It just seems such a basic thing to want to do.

The first section needs to contain all of the remaining months of the current year, and the second section contains the preceding months of the next year, up to but not including the current month.
