Their responses, perhaps jokingly, frequently include "job security." I hear this from experienced professionals, too. And not just in programming; network engineers and system administrators widely subscribe to this belief. Can you really ensure job security by holding the details of your work in your head rather than on paper (or in files)? What's your experience?

  • Loading...Please wait for UIWebView - iPhone

    Hi guys, In Safari and other browsers, there is a bar that would indicate the percentage of the loading progress, and I, myself, trying to implement something similiar on iPhone, when loading some content in UIWebView, I would like the app to indicate the percentage of the page being loaded. I tried some google search and realize we could use NSURLConnection to read only the header and get the Content-Length ( but don't know how to, I read the Apple's NSURLConnection docs but probably I missed something ... ). And the size ( kb ) which UIWebView had loaded, seem like UIWebView don't support it for the public API... I hope this would be complete in some other ways than I thought, so if you have any ideas, please throw it out, thanks for your patient reading. P.S : I could just show an Activities Indicator for users with the long loading progress actions of the UIWebView but I just want to go further with the loading percentage bar :). Regards.

  • forked-daapd without avahi

    I'm trying to setup forked-daapd, but i'd prefer it if i could run it without avahi (or rather define my own avahi service instead of using the dbus api). The reason is that i want a netatalk share for my time machine backups and a samba share for the symbolic link support (netatalk doesn't support symlinks). Those two are defined as different services in avahi. To make that work, i have to disable avahi's dbus api, or else netatalk tends to take over all the services (osx prefers afp over smb). If I now try to start forked-daapd, it just doesn't. Forked-daapd requires avahi's dbus api to be enabled and running. Is there some sort of way around this limitation, so that i can manually define my own daap service in avahi. Maybe something like enabling but ignoring the dbus in avahi, or launching a duplicate avahi daemon with a different config file?

    When setting up dojo connections to onmouseover and onmouseout, and then adding content on mouseover, dojo fires the onmouseout event at once, since there is new content. Example: dojo.query(".star").parent().connect("onmouseover", function() { dojo.query("span", this).addContent("<img src='star-hover.jpg'>"); }).connect("onmouseout", function() { dojo.destroy(dojo.query("img", this)[0]); }); The parent() is a <td>, and the .star is a span. I want to add the hover image whenever the user hovers the table cell. It works as long as the cursor doesn't hover the image, because that will result in some serious blinking. Is this deliberate? And is there a way around it?

  • "Access is denied" error on accessing iframe document object

    For posting AJAX forms in a form with many parameters, I am using a solution of creating an iframe, posting the form to it by POST, and then accessing the iframe's content. specifically, I am accessing the content like this: $("some_iframe_id").get(0).contentWindow.document I tested it and it worked. On some of the pages, I started getting an "Access is denied" error. As far as I know, this shouldn't happen if the iframe is served from the same domain. I'm pretty sure it was working before. Anybody have a clue? If I'm not being clear enough: I'm posting to the same domain. So this is not a cross-domain request. I am testing on IE only. P.S. I can't use simple ajax POST queries (don't ask...)

I do believe in formal training but i'm sceptical about their value, specialy if i dont' take classes (not enough time/money) but study at home/online and than go directly to take exams. Would you recomend taking preparation classes, or are they just waste of time? (or perhaps is whole certification thing waste of time?)   • Know a little of a lot or a lot of a little? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Is it better to specialize in a single field I like, or expand into other fields to broaden my horizons? My buddy and I who have been programming for 13 years or so were talking this morning and a question that came up was is it better to know a little of a lot (i.e. web, desktop, VB.Net, C#, jQuery, PHP, Java etc.) or is it better to know a lot of a little (meaning expert in something). The context of this question is what makes someone a senior programmer? Is it someone that has been around the block a few times and has been in many different situations or one that is locked in to a specific technology that is super knowledgeable in that one technology? I see pro's and con's of both scenarios.. Just wondering what others thought.

    On one of our client's website we have lot's of list views with links to detail views. (Image a blog with the posts overview and the single pages). The detail views don't change, but the list views will change when new items come up. The pages displaying the list view don't contain any other valuable content. So my question is: Does it make sense to define meta "noindex, follow" on the list view pages (and of course "index, follow" on the detail views) to prevent search engines to point to the list views when the keyword is found in the title or teaser of the list view. By the time the visitor clicks on the list view search result it might have changed and the content is not visible anymore, whereas if he goes directly to the single view he will definitly find what he was searching for? Related question: The startpage also contains mainly a list view. Is it a bad idea to have the start page not indexed? Any SEO gurus here? :) Thanks, Fabrizio.

  • Serious Forum Design Issue

    I want to launch a school forum for a country. I'm in dilemma as to how to design this forum. Country will have many states, each state will have cities, each city will have many schools. Each school will have many classes( 1st - 12th). It looks like this: States - Cities - Schools - Classes I want to make each class as forum. Now the biggest problems are two fold: If I were to list even 1000 schools it will create huge number of forums and I don't think forum softwares(PHPBB, MyBB) are designed to support these many Secondly creating and maintaining huge forums is also very difficult. Ideally I'd like to duplicate existing forum hierarchy to new one. I've done lot of search and I've found that such type of forums are infeasible and such designs don't work. Leave alone the fact the nobody uses such a forum. Keeping in mind this, how should I go about designing this forum?

  • Why ????? is displayed instead of non-english characters?

    I first created a simple HTML page that uses UTF-8 as its character encoding. Then I moved the HTML content as a view in codeigniter and it was still ok (I had used non-english characters that were ok as always) I added a simple dynamic functionality (there is a contact us form in it that emails users feedback to site admin). Please note that the characters were ok at localhost (which is a LAMP server running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) Strange is that when I uploaded the app to server, all persian characters are shown as ???? (For example ??? (which means Name) is shown ??? and so so...) I have not even connected to mysql or any other DBMS. It's the only page in the website (it's more an under construction page) and nothing else has been used in it. Maybe I should state that I have also used session library to thank the user after his feedback was sent to admins, nothing else. I have really no idea about the problem. UPDATE Now I can see that the problem is only with cPanel. On Directadmin I can see that everything is normal. Both Chromium and Firefox DO use UTF-8 as page's character encoding. URL is http://WEBSITE.COM/dmf/dynamic/ (dmf is the abbreviation of the project name!). There is nothing non-english in the URL.     Hi all, I'm currently working on developing a customizable website layout using jQuery, so I can drag, drop, add and remove blocks of content... much like the iGoogle interface. I have my blocks dragging and dropping working with 3 columns of content My question is to do with adding and removing blocks If I use hide(), I can simply hide and show the blocks. If I use remove, I would have to append the list of blocks to load in a new block into a column. I'm not sure which is the best approach to take. I'd be grateful for any advice on best practise, i.e. to hide() or remove() and any other advice on building this kind of interface. Thank, Sam.

  • JavaFX - question regarding binding button's disabled state

    I'm trying to create a dummy application that maintains a list of tasks. For now, all I'm trying to do is add to the list. I enter a task name in a text box, click on the add task button, and expect the list to be updated with the new item and the task name input to be cleared. I only want to be able to add tasks if the task name is not empty. The below code is my implementation, but I have a question regarding the binding. I'm binding the textbox's text variable to a string in my view model, and the button's disable variable to a boolean in my view model. I have a trigger to update the disabled state when the task name changes. When the binding of the task name happens the boolean is updated accordingly, but the button still appears disabled. But then when I mouse over the button, it becomes enabled. I believe this is due to JavaFX 1.3's binding being lazy - only updates the bound variable when it is read. Also, when I've added the task, I clear the task name in the model, but the textbox's text doesn't change - even though I'm using bind with inverse. Is there a way to make the textbox's text and the button's disabled state update automatically via the binding as I was expecting?   • Wiped data, and duplicated folders into files.

    Something weird happened today, and I dont know how. Within a folder, all folders have a file by the same name, with a colon appended to it. And all the files from the most inner-most directory in my home, have been dumped to ~, with a size of 0 bytes. I have not executed any scripts or anything. I was just checking out some easter eggs, namely the gegls from outer space and free the fish and was away from the computer and was logged because of the screensaver. I couldnt log-back in with my password, so I just reset the PC, and while booting, the PC went into a drive check. BUT, IIRC, i saw the duplicate "folder files" before I had logged out, so thats not the reason! All the files have a timestamp of 14 Jan. Also, the contents of my eclipse folder have been dumped into ~. Right down to the jars and ini files. HELP!

  • Menu bars are a basic light gray after installing graphics card driver. [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Desktop forgets theme? Hi, I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far. Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place? Below is a screenshot of my computer: (This is also the first time I've installed Ubuntu on my computer, and am keen for it to work.)

  • Panel widget overlapping other contents in android

    I'm trying to utilize the Panel widget introduced in android-misc-widgets. It's been good so far. Now the problem is the sliding panel overlaps my top menu bar. For clarification look at the following screenshots. This is when I open panel using drag gesture (no problem here): This is when I open the panel with a single tap (look at the icons overlapping the top menu): There is one other problem, If there is any content inside the activity, opening the panel pushes that content out of the screen!
