• No norwegian characters in LaTeX

  Hi, I have translated a document from English to Norwegian in the LaTeX format, and while using norwegian special characters, I get an error using \usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc} to try and display the norwegian (scandinavian) special characters in PostScript/PDF/DVI format, saying Package utf8x Error: MalformedUTF-8sequence. So while that didn't work, I tried out another possible solution: \usepackage{ucs} \usepackage[norsk]babel And when I tried to save that in Emacs I get this message: These default coding systems were tried to encode text in the buffer `lol.tex': (utf-8-unix (905 . 4194277) (916 . 4194245) (945 . 4194278) (950 . 4194277) (954 . 4194296) (990 . 4194277) (1010 . 4194277) (1013 . 4194278) (1051 . 4194277) (1078 . 4194296) (1105 . 4194296)) However, each of them encountered characters it couldn't encode: utf-8-unix cannot encode these: \345 \305 \346 \345 \370 \345 \345 \346 \345 \370 ... Thanks to Emacs I have the possibility to check out the properties of those characters and the first one tells me: character: \345 (4194277, #o17777745, #x3fffe5) preferred charset: eight-bit (Raw bytes 128-255) code point: 0xE5 syntax: w which means: word buffer code: #xE5 file code: not encodable by coding system utf-8-unix display: not encodable for terminal Which doesn't tell me much. When I try to build this with texi2dvi --dvipdf filename.text I get a perfectly fine PDF, all without the special norwegian characters. When I am about to save Emacs also ask me: "Select coding system (default raw-text):" And I type in utf-8 to choose its coding system. I have also tried to choose default raw-text to see if I get some different result. But nothing. At last I tried \lstset{inputencoding=utf8x, extendedchars=\true} ... a code I came over while trying to google the solution to this problem. Which gives me this error: Undefined control sequence. So basically, I have tried every encoding option I have been able to find and nothing works. I am desperately trying to make this work since the norwegian translation must be published before the deadline. As an additional information I may add that I found out later on that I only had the en_US.UTF-8 in my locale, so I added nb_NO.UTF-8 and nb_NO.ISO-8859-15 and ran locale-gen + reboot without any changes. I hope I provided enough information to get some assistance, the characters in question is æ ø å.

• What is the relationship between WebProxy & IWebProxy with respect to WebClient?

  I am creating an app (.NET 2.0) that uses WebClient to connect (downloaddata, etc) to/from a http web service. I am adding a form now to handle allowing proxy information to either be stored or set to use the defaults. I am a little confused about some things. First, some of the methods & properties available in either WebProxy or IWebProxy are not in both. What is the difference here with respect to setting up how WebClient will be have when it is called? Secondly, do I have to tell WebClient to use the proxy information if I set it using either WebProxy or IWebProxy class elsewhere? Or is it automatically inherited? Thirdly, when giving the option for the user to use the default proxy (whatever is set in IE) and using the default credentials (I assume also whatever is set in IE) are these two mutually exclusive? Or you only use default credentials when you have also used default proxy? This gets me to the whole difference between WebProxy and IWebProxy. WebRequest.DefaultProxy is a IWebPRoxy class but UseDefaultCredentials is not a method on the IWebProxy class, rather it is only on WebProxy and in turn, How to set the proxy to the WebRequest.DefautlProxy if they are two different classes? Here is my current method to read the stored form settings by the user - but I am not sure if this is correct, not enough, overkill, or just wrong because of the mix of WebProxy and IWebProxy: private WebProxy _proxyInfo = new WebProxy(); private WebProxy SetProxyInfo() { if (UseProxy) { if (UseIEProxy) { // is doing this enough to set this as default for WebClient? • ASP.NET site sometimes freezing up and/or showing odd text at top of the page while loading, on load

  I have various servers (dev, 2 x test, 2 x prod) running the same asp.net site. The test and prod servers are in load-balanced pairs (prod1 with prod2, and test1 with test2). The test server pair is exhibiting some kind of (super) slowdown or freezing during about one in ten page loads. Sometimes a line of text appears at the very top of the page which looks something like: 00 OK Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 01:50:09 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered_By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version:2.0.50727 Cache-Control:private Content-Type:text/html; charset=ut (the beginning and end are "cut off".) Reversing the above (see the link) didn't work at first either. The ASP.NET tab disappeared from our IIS web site properties and we had to mess around for an hour uninstalling (aspnet_regiis.exe -u) and reinstalling 32 bit ASP.NET and adding Default.aspx manually back into default documents. We'll probably try again in a few days, if anyone has anything to add in the meantime, please do.

So, actually pretty geeky stuff.   For a project I'm working on, we're looking for a way to dynamically add filters to a page which then control the dataoutput in, for instance, a grid. We want to add the filters dynamically because we want the customer to be able to change which properties can be filtered and what filtertype (textbox, dropdown, colourpicker, etc.) should be used. The filter should work as follows: - The customer links a filter to a certain property and specifies the filtertype (for this example: dropdown). - A user control which contains all the filter loads all filters specified - The filters load all values of the specified property as options. The first time the page loads; this would be the values of all items. - Now the user selects a value from one of the filters; the page reloads - Only items which have the specified filter value are retrieved, the user may specify one or more filters at the same time. - Once a user drills down by filtering, only filtervalues of the retrieved items should be used in the other filters. I have the following problems: - When I create the filters runtime, events are lost because the controls get recreated each postback. - I could place the filters in PreInit which should solve this, but then determining which controls should be loaded becomes a problem since loading all environment vars isn't finished yet - I don't know a good way of returning all the filter values to a central point from which I can make a good query. - The query has to be dynamic. I'm using linq which I want to make dynamic so I don't have to select everything everytime. How to make a dynamic select query based on a string stored in the database? - I have to select items based on the filtervalues and then adjust the rest of the filters to the already made selection. That kind of messes up the whole regular databinding sequence. Any help in one of the above would be great! PS: One thing I thought about was passing along filter values in the postback which would have to be recognizable. That way the server could use them for selection and then create the filters and autoselect the previously selected filtervalues. I'm not quite sure how to acheive this though...

• .NET WinForms INotifyPropertyChanged updates all bindings when one is changed. Better way?

  In a windows forms application, a property change that triggers INotifyPropertyChanged, will result in the form reading EVERY property from my bound object, not just the property changed. (See example code below) This seems absurdly wasteful since the interface requires the name of the changing property. It is causing a lot of clocking in my app because some of the property getters require calculations to be performed. I'll likely need to implement some sort of logic in my getters to discard the unnecessary reads if there is no better way to do this. Am I missing something? Is there a better way? Don't say to use a different presentation technology please -- I am doing this on Windows Mobile (although the behavior happens on the full framework as well). Here's some toy code to demonstrate the problem.   I haven't been able to find any documentation on how to configure Hibernate's logging using the XML style configuration file for Log4j. Is this even possible or do I have use a properties style configuration file to control Hibernate's logging? If anyone has any information or links to documentation it would appreciated. EDIT: Just to clarify, I am looking for example of the actual XML syntax to control Hibernate.   Hello, I seem to be having one weird problem with some Hibernate data classes. In a very specific case, deleting an object should fail due to existing, non-nullable relations - however it does not. The strangest part is that a few other classes related to the same definition behave appropriately. I'm using HSQLDB 1.8.0.10, Hibernate 3.5.0 (final) and Spring 3.0.2. The Hibernate properties are set so that batch updates are disabled. However, an AdminCredentials instance will be ignored, the deletion will succeed, leaving an invalid AdminCredentials instance behind (trying to refresh that instance causes an error because the Credentials instance no longer exists). I have tried moving the AdminCredentials table from the admin DB schema to the users DB schema. Strangely enough, a deletion-related error is then triggered, but not in the deletion code - it is triggered at the next query involving the table, seemingly ignoring the flush mode setting. I've been trying to understand this for hours and I must admit I'm just as clueless now as I was then.

• IE is ignoring Z-Index on positioned elements

  IE yet again is proving to be the bane of my existence. The top of a site I'm working on has a horizontal menu, an item of which triggers a pure-CSS menu that is positioned absolute within the parent menu DIV (positioned relative). This places the menu perfectly in both IE and the W3C compliant browsers. The problem arises when I have more positioned elements further down on the page. These are also positioned relative, because there is data inside them that needs to be positioned absolute... again, this displays properly in all browsers I've tested it on. The problem is, that then the top menu is opened, part is obscured by the positioned elements further down the page - in effect, it's positioned BELOW these elements even though there are z-index properties defined on all. (in both the CSS file and inline). The only way to get IE to display this properly is to place the actual HTML for the menu at the bottom of the page, below (in DOM terms) the positioned elements elsewhere on the page. I would only do this as an absolute last resort. All Elements are the same type (div). • Should I deal with files longer than MAX_PATH?

  Just had an interesting case. My software reported back a failure caused by a path being longer than MAX_PATH. The path was just a plain old document in My Documents, e.g.: C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Some Stupid FOlder Name\A really ridiculously long file thats really very very very..........very long.pdf Total length 269 characters (MAX_PATH==260). The user wasn't using a external hard drive or anything like that. This was a file on an Windows managed drive. So my question is this. Should I care? I'm not saying can I deal with the long paths, I'm asking should I. Yes I'm aware of the "\?\" unicode hack on some Win32 APIs, but it seems this hack is not without risk (as it's changing the behaviour of the way the APIs parse paths) and also isn't supported by all APIs . So anyway, let me just state my position/assertions: First presumably the only way the user was able to break this limit is if the app she used uses the special Unicode hack. It's a PDF file, so maybe the PDF tool she used uses this hack. I tried to reproduce this (by using the unicode hack) and experimented. What I found was that although the file appears in Explorer, I can do nothing with it. I can't open it, I can't choose "Properties" (Windows 7). Other common apps can't open the file (e.g. IE, Firefox, Notepad). Explorer will also not let me create files/dirs which are too long - it just refuses. Ditto for command line tool cmd.exe. So basically, one could look at it this way: a rouge tool has allowed the user to create a file which is not accessible by a lot of Windows (e.g. Explorer). I could take the view that I shouldn't have to deal with this. (As an aside, this isn't an vote of approval for a short max path length: I think 260 chars is a joke, I'm just saying that if Windows shell and some APIs can't handle 260 then why should I?). So, is this a fair view? Should I say "Not my problem"? Thanks! John

• WPF TreeView: How to style selected items with rounded corners like in Explorer

  The selected item in a WPF TreeView has a dark blue background with "sharp" corners. That looks a bit dated today: I would like to change the background to look like in Explorer of Windows 7 (with/without focus): What I tried so far does not remove the original dark blue background but paints a rounded border on top of it so that you see the dark blue color at the edges and at the left side - ugly. Interestingly, when my version does not have the focus, it looks pretty OK: I would like to refrain from redefining the control template as shown here or here. I want to set the minimum required properties to make the selected item look like in Explorer. Alternative: I would also be happy to have the focused selected item look like mine does now when it does not have the focus. When losing the focus, the color should change from blue to grey. As you can see I've placed several traces and in the property of the class my trace works fine , however if I look in my Draw function it is already gone. And I get a blank trace.   Again me with IE8 web slice :) This time i have following problem. I created web slice for IE8 and created button for users where they can choice to add it to their browsers. But I have problem with CSS in web slice. I defined css in it, but when web slice i rendered there are only black fonts without any css properties. • Understanding CLR 2.0 Memory Model

  Joe Duffy, gives 6 rules that describe the CLR 2.0+ memory model (it's actual implementation, not any ECMA standard) I'm writing down my attempt at figuring this out, mostly as a way of rubber ducking, but if I make a mistake in my logic, at least someone here will be able to catch it before it causes me grief. Rule 1: Data dependence among loads and stores is never violated. Rule 2: All stores have release semantics, i.e. no load or store may move after one. Rule 3: All volatile loads are acquire, i.e. no load or store may move before one. Rule 4: No loads and stores may ever cross a full-barrier (e.g. Thread.MemoryBarrier, lock acquire, Interlocked.Exchange, Interlocked.CompareExchange, etc.). Rule 5: Loads and stores to the heap may never be introduced. Rule 6: Loads and stores may only be deleted when coalescing adjacent loads and stores from/to the same location. I'm attempting to understand these rules. x = y y = 0 // Cannot move before the previous line according to Rule 1. x = y z = 0 // equates to this sequence of loads and stores before possible re-ordering load y store x load 0 store z Looking at this, it appears that the load 0 can be moved up to before load y, but the stores may not be re-ordered at all. Therefore, if a thread sees z == 0, then it also will see x == y. If y was volatile, then load 0 could not move before load y, otherwise it may. Volatile stores don't seem to have any special properties, no stores can be re-ordered with respect to each other (which is a very strong guarantee!) Full barriers are like a line in the sand which loads and stores can not be moved over. No idea what rule 5 means. I guess rule 6 means if you do: x = y x = z Then it is possible for the CLR to delete both the load to y and the first store to x. x = y z = y // equates to this sequence of loads and stores before possible re-ordering load y store x load y store z // could be re-ordered like this load y load y store x store z // rule 6 applied means this is possible? load y store x // but don't pop y from stack (or first duplicate item on top of stack) store z What if y was volatile? I don't see anything in the rules that prohibits the above optimization from being carried out. This does not violate double-checked locking, because the lock() between the two identical conditions prevents the loads from being moved into adjacent positions, and according to rule 6, that's the only time they can be eliminated. So I think I understand all but rule 5, here. Anyone want to enlighten me (or correct me or add something to any of the above?)

• PHP MVC Principles

  I'm not using an off-the-shelf framework and don't particularly want to (nor d I want to go into the reasons why...). Anyway, onto my question(s), I hope it make sense.... I'm trying to get my head around what should go in the model and what should go in the controller. Originally I had the impression that a model class should represent an actual object (eg - a car from the cars table of a database) and model properties should mirror the database fields. However I'm now getting the feeling that I've got the wrong idea - should an instance of a model class represent an actual item, or should it contain a number of methods for doing stuff - sometimes to one car or sometimes to multiple cars based on my example earlier. For example I want to get all the cars from a the database and show them in the view. Am I right in think it should be along the lines of this? Controller File function list() { $cars = $this->model->get_all(); $this->view->add($cars); $this->view->render('cars-list'); } Model File function get_all() { // Use a database interaction class that I've written $cars = Database::select(); return $cars; } Now, if the car had a "status" field that was stored as an integer in the database and I wanted to change that to a string, where should that be done? By looping the SQL results array in the get_all() method in the model? Also, where should form validation live? I have written a validation class that works a little like this: $validator = new Validator(); $validator->check('field_name', 'required'); If the check fails, it adds an error message to the array in the Validator. This array of error messages would then get passed to the view. Should the use of my validator class go in model or the controller? Thanks in advance for for any help anyone can offer. If you know of any links to a simple MVC example / open source application that deals with basic CRUD, they would be much appreciated.
