• iphone Dev - activity indicator with NSThread not working on Nav controller table view

  I really can't get this to work, basically when my JSON feeds loads I want the indicator to show, then hide when it's stopped. It loads top level menu items 1st "Publishing, Broadcasting, Marketing Services", then when Broadcasting is selected it loads a feed using the JSON framework hosted on Google. Round this load I call startIndicator and stopIndicator using the NSThread. • realtime logging

  I have an application which has a loop, part of a "Scheduler", which runs at all time and is the heart of the application. Pretty much like a game loop, just that my application is a WPF application and it's not a game. Naturally the application does logging at many points, but the Scheduler does some sensitive monitoring, and sometimes it's impossible just from the logs to tell what may have gotten wrong (and by wrong I don't mean exceptions) or the current status. Because Scheduler's inner loop runs at short intervals, you can't do file I/O-based logging (or using the Event Viewer) in there. First, you need to watch it in real-time, and secondly the log file would grow in size very fast. So I was thinking of ways to show this data to the user in the realtime, some things I considered: Display the data in realtime in the UI Use AllocConsole/WriteConsole to display this information in a console Use a different console application which would display this information, communicate between the Scheduler and the console app using pipes or other IPC techniques Use Windows' Performance Monitor and somehow feed it with this information ETW Displaying in the UI would have its issues. First it doesn't integrate with the UI I had in mind for my application, and I don't want to complicate the UI just for this. This diagnostics would only happen rarely. Secondly, there is going to be some non-trivial data protection, as the Scheduler has it's own thread. A separate console window would work probably, but I'm still worried if it's not too much threshold. Allocating my own console, as this is a windows app, would probably be better than a different console application (3), as I don't need to worry about IPC communication, and non-blocking communication. However a user could close the console I allocated, and it would be problematic in that case. With a separate process you don't have to worry about it. Assuming there is an API for Performance Monitor, it wouldn't be integrated too well with my app or apparent to the users. Using ETW also doesn't solve anything, just a random idea, I still need to display this information somehow. What others think, would there be other ways I missed?

Is there some way to accomplish the same thing using Objective-C and OCMock? I've been using the code below, which works but it feels like a hack. • Why did Dylan lose to Objective-C

  I have played/worked with many different programming languages and Dylan is still one of my favorites. My question is why did Dylan fail when Objective-C, Ruby and even Scheme have had more success? Was Dylans performance that much worse than Objective-C that Apple went with it or was purely for social/political reasons. Zend_Filter_input seems to require prior knowledge of the contents of the input and I'm concerned that using something like HTML Purifier will have a big performance impact.   Hi, Inspired by this post, I'm trying to use a TreeView inside the AutoCompleteBox's popup in order to show hierarchical data. Here's what i did: I Made my own TreeView that implements ISelectionAdapter (not sure it's perfect) Edit AutoCompleteBox template and change the selector to my treeview Try Bind my ViewModel to it Unfortunately this is not working. i checked my new TreeView with the same binding to the same object and it works prefectly when it's outside of a AutoCompleteBox template. Any idea? any special way to implement ISelectionAdapter for treeview? did i missed something? couldn't find any example for it on the web... Thanks.

  I've got sort of a crazy thing going on where I have an NSProxy subclass standing in for a UISwitch. Messages sent to the proxy are forwarded to the switch. Please don't comment on whether or not this is a good design, because in context, it makes sense as an incredibly cool thing. The dealio is that when I try to add this object as an accessory view to a UITableViewCell, I get the following crash: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[UISwitch superlayer]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x5889740' Yes, I could just set the proxy's target as the accessory view, but then I would have to keep track of the proxy so that I could release it at the right time. So, what I really want is to be able to have the proxy retained by the table cell, and released when it is removed from the view just like a normal accessory view. So, why is -[UISwitch superlayer] (a method which does not exist) being called, and how do I save the world?

• Android NDK - does it support straight ARM code or just Thumb

  All, I have been asked to evaluate the Android platform for our product and I am looking at various options, I am only just scratching the surface just now and the one thing that is bothering me is that I cannot see how to compile code as straight ARM code (no Thumb), I know that Thumb runs slower and we will need the performance in key sections of our code. I think it should just be setting the -march flag in the LOCAL_CFLAGS of the Android.mk file, but I cannot get that to work... Can anyone help. Russell

  Hi, I'm experiencing performance inconsistencies with regards to build duration when building a VS2008 solution file with either devenv or msbuild from command line. My solution contains both C# and C++ projects, and I have these results: devenv.exe (either command line or within the ide): 7 minutes msbuild.exe: 14 minutes I tried tuning the msbuild switches passing /maxcpucount and /p:VCBuildAdditionalOptions=m# but with no luck so far. Any idea?

• Dealing with the lack of closures in Objective-C

  Maybe it's just the fact that I've been using http://nodejs.org/ lately, but the lack of closures in Objective-C (iphone) has been really hard to work around. For example, I'm creating service classes. Each service class can have several methods, each of which makes a different URL request. I can use the delegate pattern, but that means that I have to create a new service each time I want to call a method on it (because it has to store the delegate and selector for that request, and new method calls would overwrite them). Even more difficult for me is the fact that I can't easily keep local variables around in the scope for a callback. I have to store anything I want to send back to the delegate on the service class itself, which makes it harder to have more than one method on each class. How do you pros do it? Should I just quit whining and do it another way?

In an effort to do something with the jQuery Calculation plugin, I am playing with the basic example of the order form on the plugin site. I want to have the grand total as a form field,rather than text, so I can use the value. • Iphone: UIWebview and double taps

  I would like to trap a double tap event in a UIWebView. I have derived a class from UIWebController. When I double tap it seams that the UIWebController itself is responding to my double taps instead of my class. The weird thing is that when I change the inheritance to inherit from UIView everything works just fine. Below are snippets from my code which is supposed to invoke a pop-up when double tapped. • UIBarButtonItem: target-action not working?

  Hey fellas, I've got a custom view inside of a UIBarButtonItem, set by calling -initWithCustomView. OK, so the view renders fine, but when I tap it, it doesn't call the method that I set as the UIBarButtonItem's action property. Oh, and I have verified that my -deselectAll method works fine. • jQuery jPicker > Assign color of jPicker from a text link (not from jPicker)

  I've got a list of frequently used hex colors that I'd like to list under my jPicker bound input text field and I'd like to figure out how to change the value of the jPicker active color without opening the jPicker color selector palette. I've managed to create a function that updates the input field thats bound to the jPicker, but the colors of the background and picker.gif do not update. I'd like to force the background colors to update as if the color was selected from jPicker itself.
