• PHP strtotime() looks like it is expecting a Euro format

  I've been using PHP's strtotime() method to accept a date field on a form. I love how powerful it is, in how it will accept "Tomorrow", "Next Thursday", or (supposedly) any date representation and convert it to the Unix timestamp. It's been working great -- until yesterday. Someone entered "2-4-10" and instead of logging Feb 4th, 2010, it logged April 10, 2002! So it expected Y-M-D instead of M-D-Y. I thought maybe the problem was just using a 2-digit year, so we tried again with "2-4-2010". That logged April 2nd, 2010! At that point I just don't understand what strtotime() is doing. PHP.net says it expects a US English date format. Why then would it assume D-M-Y? Is there a way around this? Or do I have to stop using strtotime()? Note: I just now did a test. When you use slashes instead of hyphen/dashes, it works fine, even with 2/4/10. Why on earth does that matter? And if that's all it is, should I just run str_replace("-", "/", $input) on the form input before passing it to strtotime()?

  Hello, I wrote the following php snippet to fetch the currency conversion rate from Yahoo Finance.Im using curl to fetch the data. Suppose, i want to convert from US dollars (USD) to Indian National Rupee (INR),then the url is http://in.finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=1&from=USD&to=INR&submit= and the Indian Rupee value is shown as 45.225. However,if i run my code, the value im getting is 452.25. • PHP autoloader: ignoring non-existing include

  I have a problem with my autoloader: public function loadClass($className) { $file = str_replace(array('_', '\\'), '/', $className) . '.php'; include_once $file; } As you can see, it's quite simple. I just deduce the filename of the class and try to include it. I have a problem though; I get an exception when trying to load a non-existing class (because I have an error handler which throws exceptions). This is inconvenient, because it's also fired when you use class_exists() on a non-existing class. You don't want an exception there, just a "false" returned. I fixed this earlier by putting an @ before the include (supressing all errors). The big drawback with this, though, is that any parser/compiler errors (that are fatal) in this include won't show up (not even in the logs), resulting in a hard to find bug. What would be the best way to solve both problems at once? The easiest way would be to include something like this in the autoloader (pseudocode): foreach (path in the include_path) { if (is_readable(the path + the class name)) readable = true; } if (!readable) return; But I worry about the performance there. • php - sort and delete duplicates?

  I've got an array that looks like this: Array ( [0] => Array ( num => 09989, dis => 20 ) [1] => Array ( num => 09989, dis => 10 ) [2] => Array ( num => 56676, dis => 15 ) [3] => Array ( num => 44533, dis => 20 ) [4] => Array ( num => 44533, dis => 50 ) ) First, I'm trying to sort them by num, and can't seem to get the usort example from php.net working here. It simply doesn't appear to be sorting... I'm also trying to delete the array element if it's a duplicate and whose dis value is higher than the other one. • Problems with utf-8 encoding in php

  Hi, Another utf-8 related problem I believe... I am using php to update data in a mysql db then display that data elsewhere in the site. Previously I have run into utf-8 problems before where special characters are displayed as question marks when viewed in a browser but this one seems slightly different. I have a number of records to enter that contain the è character. If I enter this directly in the db then it appears correctly on the page so I take this to mean that utf-8 content is being output correctly. However when I try and update the values in the db through php, then the è character is replaced. What appears instead is & Atilde ; & uml ; (without the spaces) which appears in the browser as è I have the tables in the database set to use UTF-8. I believe this is correct cos, as mentioned, if I update the db through phpMyAdmin, its all ok. Similarly I have set the character encoding for the page which seems to be correct. I am also running the sql statement "SET NAMES 'utf8';" before trying to update the db. Anyone have any other ideas as to where the problem may lie? Many thanks

• Need to find latitude and longitude of postcodes and store into my database

  Hey guys, Ive got a database full of UK Postcodes, now i'd like to be able to store the latitude and longitude of these specific postcodes along with the record with the database. Is there anyway that i can obtain this data free without violating any T&C's? I know i could do this using google maps api for each postcode, but i have way over 20,000 postcodes in this database and to get the lat and lng for each of these postcodes each time is not an option really. • setlocale to fr-FR in PHP and number formatting

  Hi, I am trying to create a French version of one of my sites. I have set setlocale(LC_ALL, 'fr_FR'); at the top of my page, and using strftime I am displaying dates correctly in the French style. However I am having some problems with a number. Part of the page uses data I am getting from a Web Service. I am assigning a returned value to a var like this: $overallRating = $returnArray['Overall']; I am then using the following code later to format it to 1 decimal place number_format($overallRating,1) In the English version the overallRating value might be 7.5 and returns a value such as 7.5 (the reason for running it through the number_format is if it returns 7 I want it to display 7.0) However in the French version if I print out the raw $overallRating value I get 7,5 which looks like it has translated it into french. This would be fine but if I run it through number_format I get the error: Notice: A non well formed numeric value encountered in /sites/index.php on line 250 Line 250 is the number_format line I presume the translation to 7,5 is messing it up, but not sure how to solve this... Using PHP 5.3 in case there is anything new that helps me

• Refresh a Div that has a Google ad inside it

  Hello all, I have a div that holds a google ad. My website is mostly AJAX and there is no need for a browser refresh. That means my ads will not refresh either, which isnt ideal, a user staring at one ad all day. So I wanted a way to refresh a particular div on a page. I found many solutions but they didnt work. For example, using JQuery's html function: $("#ads").html("google ad script here"); This managed to refresh the whole page no idea how. I can also make an AJAX request to a HTML page that contains the google ad but I am guessing it will have the same effect as the above attempt. I do not want to use iFrames. Is there any other option open to me? My pea brain can not think of anymore. :) Thanks you for any help. EDIT: It is allowed since I will be initiating the refresh only when a user clicks a link. A prime example is Yahoo Mail - their new AJAX mailbox uses this same method, when a user clicks a link then a new ad is shown.

• Error handling in PHP

  Hi guys, We're building a PHP app based on Good old MVC (codeigniter framework) and have run into trouble with a massive chained action that consists of multiple model calls, that together is a part of a big transaction to the database. We want to be able to do a list of actions and get a status report of each one back from the function, whatever the outcome is. Our first initial idea was to utilize the exceptions of PHP5, but since we want to also need status messages that doesnt break the execution of the script, this was our solution that we came up with. It goes a little something like this: $sku = $this->addSku( $name ); if ($sku === false) { $status[] = 'Something gone terrible wrong'; $this->db->trans_rollback(); return $status; } $image= $this->addImage( $filename); if ($image=== false) { $error[] = 'Image could not be uploaded, check filesize'; $this->db->trans_rollback(); return $status; } Our controller looks like this: $var = $this->products->addProductGroup($array); if (is_array($var)) { foreach ($var as $error) { echo $error . '<br />'; } } It appears to be a very fragile solution to do what we need, but it's neither scalable, neither effective when compared to pure PHP exceptions for instance. Is this really the way that this kind of stuff generally is handled in MVC based apps? Thanks!

• What are the benefits of the PHP the different PHP compression libraries?

  I've been looking into ways to compress PHP libraries, and I've found several libraries which might be useful, but I really don't know much about them. I've specifically been reading about bcompiler and PHAR libraries. Is there any performance benefit in either of these? Are there any "gotchas" I need to watch out for? What are the relative benefits? Do either of them add to/detract from performance? I'm also interested in learning of other libs which might be out there which are not obvious in the documentation? As an aside, does anyone happen to know whether these work more like zip files which just happen to have the code in there, or if they operate more like Python's pre-compiling which actually runs a pseudo-compiler? ======================= EDIT ======================= I've been asked, "What are you trying to accomplish?" Well, I suppose the answer is that this is all hypothetical. It is a combination of these: What if my pet project becomes the most popular web project on earth and I want to distribute it quickly and easily? (hay, a man can dream, right?) It also seems if using PHAR can be done easily, it would be the best way to create a subversion snapshot. Python has this really cool pre-compiling policy, I wonder if PHP has something like that?   Hi guys... Hope this isn't a waste of your time. I'm working on a project, and it occured to me that there's a chunk of code out there, that should allow me to see how others have implemented this. I've got a project where I'm going to have a page, with a sel box. the user will select an item from the selList, and based on the item selected, a separate section of the page (areaB) will change in terms of the content/tbls being displayed. i then want to allow the user to go through a series of subpages in areaB, where the user goes through a submit/cancel/confirm process, where the stuff in areaB changes, with the rest of the page remaining the same... i'm trying to figure out the best approach to implement the on both client/server side. i could just have an ugly "if block" where i have abunch of logic, and i completely regen the page each time the user selects an action.. i could have an approach that might involve divs/frames, where i then just regen the targeted frame/div area.. is this even possible?? i could have some form of ajaxy process, which would only alter the targeted section(s) of the page... so.. i'm trying to talk to anyone who has ideas on how to do this, or more ideally, if you know of a good code (client/server) side example of this... that i can examine. i'd really appreciate it!! i've got a more detailed overview but didn't know if it would be cool to post it here... thanks.. tom

• Google App Engine Python: get image upload size server-side

  I am building a Google App Engine App that lets users upload images; I have everything working fine, but I am struggling to find a way to ensure that the user does not upload an image too large (because I am resizing the images, so this crashes my python script). When a user uploads a large image, I get this error RequestTooLargeError: The request to API call images.Transform() was too large. I know that there is a size limitation on what GAE allows for it's image API, I am just trying to find a way to deal with this server side; something along the lines of if (image is too large): inform user else: proceed I haven't had any luck finding the right python code to do this; can anyone help me out?

• PHP not obeying my defined ETags

  What I'm doing I'm pulling an image from the database and sending it to the browser with all the proper headers - the image displays fine. I also send an ETag header, using the SHA1 of the image's content as the tag. The images are getting called semi regularly, so caching is a bit of an issue (won't kill the site, but nice to have). The Problem $_SERVER['HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH'] is not available to me. As far as I can tell, this is because of PHP's "disobey the cache controls" life style. I can't mess with the session cache limiter, because I don't have access. But, even if I did have access, I wouldn't want to touch it: 99% of the site is under WordPress. The Environment PHP 4 (don't ask) Apache 2.2 WordPress The images live in the database (largeblog), which I can't change. Any guidance, tip/tricks, etc. would be helpful. I don't have much room to change the environmental/structural stuff. Cheers.

• Making alpha PNGs with PHP GD

  Hello, I've got a problem making alpha PNGs with PHP GD. I don't have imageMagik etc. Though the images load perfectly well in-browser and in GFX programs, I'm getting problems with Flash AS3 (actionscript) understanding the files. It complains of being an unknown type. But, exporting these files from Fireworks to the same spec works fine. So I'm suggesting it's something wrong with the formatting in PHP GD. There seems to be a number of ways of doing this, with several similar functions; so maybe this isn't right? $image_p = imagecreatetruecolor($width_orig, $height_orig); $image = imagecreatefrompng($filename); imagealphablending($image_p, false); ImageSaveAlpha($image_p, true); ImageFill($image_p, 0, 0, IMG_COLOR_TRANSPARENT); imagealphablending($image_p, true); imagecopyresampled($image_p, $image, 0, 0, 0, 0, $width_orig, $height_orig, $width_orig, $height_orig); imagepng($image_p, "new2/".$filename, 0); imagedestroy($image_p); This just takes files it's given and puts them into new files with a specified width/height - for this example it's same as original but in production it resizes, which is why I'm resampling.

• Take Current Snapshot of DB and send it to FTP in same PHP Scripts: Advice Needed

  Not sure if I can do it this way. I want to get current snapshot of the database and send it via FTP Server, both of this functionality should be implemented in PHP scripts. Here are the steps I am thinking on right now. In my php scripts(basically am extending an PDO into my Dao class and then preparing the query), $qry = SELECT * FROM MyTablename; $stmt = $this->prepare($qry); $stmt = $this->execute(); Now I will store $stmt in csv file using fputcsv or I will execute the sql command from the script itself and than try to store the result in the $file(csv file) note here that I do not have any csv file with me at this point to basically I will have to create one and let's say its $file, so then $file = fputcsv($stmt); or $file = exec("Select * from MyTablename"); Will this put all records in the file ? If yes, then I will use FTP Functionality to transfer file to the FTP Folder. I am not sure if this approach would work and also have concerns regarding the need of preparing the $qry Any suggestions or different approach advised would be highly appreciated. Thanks !!!

  Can PHP dissect its own syntax? For example, I'd like to write a function that takes in an input like $object->attribute and says to itself: OK, he's giving me $foo->bar, which means he must think that $foo is an object that has a property called bar. Before I try accessing bar and potentially get a 'Trying to get property of non-object' error, let me check whether $foo is even an object. The end goal is to echo a value if it is set, and fail silently if not. I want to avoid repetition like this: <input value="<? if(is_object($foo) && is_set($foo->bar)){ echo $foo->bar; }?> "/> ...and to avoid writing a function that does the above, but has to have the object and attribute passed in separately, like this: <input value="<? echoAttribute($foo,'bar') ?>" /> ...but to instead write something which: preserves the object-attribute syntax is flexible: can also handle array keys or regular variables Like this: <input value="<? echoIfSet($foo->bar); ?> /> <input value="<? echoIfSet($baz['buzz']); ?> /> <input value="<? echoIfSet($moo); ?> /> But this all depends on PHP being able to tell me "what kind of thing am I asking for when I say $object->attribute or $array[$key]", so that my function can handle each according to its own type. • In Magento, is it possible to populate your product models from an external API instead of the Magento DB?

  I currently have Magento 1.7 CE installed. I want to use the Magento Product Models, except I want to get the price for the product from an external API (our pricing exists outside of Magento). I know what I could use the Magento API to import all the prices from our existing database, but our pricing changes very often, and we would then need to maintain two databases. Basically I'm wondering if there is something in Magento I can overwrite to call our API instead of the DB?

  Here's a link I found, which even has a character I need to play with for other projects of mine. http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2446/index.htm There is a box with the Title of: "Encodings" on that page. And I am wondering about some of the rows. I obviously need a course on this sort of thing, but I'm wondering what the difference is between "HTML Entity (decimal)" and "HTML Entity (hex)". The funny thing is, which confuses me, I throw those characters on a web page, and they display fine. But I haven't specified any UTF-8 encoding in the php page. <?php $string1 = '&#x2446;'; $string2 = '&#9286;'; echo $string1; echo '<br>'; echo $string2; ?> Does the browser know how to display both automatically? And to make it weirder, I can only see those characters on my Mac, in Firefox. But my windows box doesn't want to show them. I've tested it in chrome, and firefox. Do I need to tell the browsers to view them correctly? Or is it an operating system modification?

• Convert HTML + CSS to PDF with PHP?

  Ok, I'm now banging my head against a brick wall with this one. I have an HTML (not XHTML) document that renders fine in Firefox 3 and IE 7. It uses fairly basic CSS to style it and renders fine in HTML. I'm now after a way of converting it to PDF. I have tried: DOMPDF: it had huge problems with tables. I factored out my large nested tables and it helped (before it was just consuming up to 128M of memory then dying--thats my limit on memory in php.ini) but it makes a complete mess of tables and doesn't seem to get images. The tables were just basic stuff with some border styles to add some lines at various points; HTML2PDF and HTML2PS: I actually had better luck with this. It rendered some of the images (all the images are Google Chart URLs) and the table formatting was much better but it seemed to have some complexity problem I haven't figured out yet and kept dying with unknown node_type() errors. Not sure where to go from here; and Htmldoc: this seems to work fine on basic HTML but has almost no support for CSS whatsoever so you have to do everything in HTML (I didn't realize it was still 2001 in Htmldoc-land...) so it's useless to me. I tried a Windows app called Html2Pdf Pilot that actually did a pretty decent job but I need something that at a minimum runs on Linux and ideally runs on-demand via PHP on the Webserver. I really can't believe I'm this stuck. Am I missing something?

• phpUnit - mock php extended exception object

  I'm testing some legacy code that extends the default php exception object. This code prints out a custom HTML error message. I would like to mock this exception object in such a way that when the tested code generates an exception it will just echo the basic message instead of giving me the whole HTML message. I cannot figure out a way to do this. It seems like you can test for explicit exceptions, but you can't change in a general way the behavior of an exception, and you also can't mock up an object that extends a default php functionality. ( can't think of another example of this beyond exceptions... but it would seem to be the case ) I guess the problem is, where would you attach the mocked object?? It seems like you can't interfere with 'throw new' and this is the place that the object method is called.... Or if you could somehow use the existing phpunit exception functionality to change the exception behavior the way you want, in a general way for all your code... but this seems like it would be hacky and bad....

• How to Avoid PHP Object Nesting/Creation Limit?

  I've got a handmade ORM in PHP that seems to be bumping up against an object limit and causing php to crash. Here's a simple script that will cause crashes: <? class Bob { protected $parent; public function Bob($parent) { $this->parent = $parent; } public function __toString() { if($this->parent) return (string) "x " . $this->parent; return "top"; } } $bobs = array(); for($i = 1; $i < 40000; $i++) { $bobs[] = new Bob($bobs[$1 -1]); } ?> Even running this from the command line will cause issues. Some boxes take more than 40,000 objects. I've tried it on Linux/Appache (fail) but my app runs on IIS/FastCGI. On FastCGI this causes the famous "The FastCGI process exited unexpectedly" error. Obviously 20k objects is a bit high, but it crashes with far fewer objects if they have data and nested complexity. Fast CGI isn't the issue - I've tried running it from the command line. I've tried setting the memory to something really high - 6,000MB and to something really low - 24MB. If I set it low enough I'll get the "allocated memory size xxx bytes exhausted" error. I'm thinking that it has to do with the number of functions that are called - some kind of nesting prevention. I didn't think that my ORM's nesting was that complicated but perhaps it is. I've got some pretty clear cases where if I load just ONE more object it dies, but loads in under 3 seconds if it works.

• Is there anyway to carry a value in php forward to a second page?

  I have created a php site, and previously it was listing only products with defined values. I have now changed it to include an array of products for example all products WHERE id = "spotlights" and this works great so it means I can add new products just to the database, but I still have to add the second page manually. e.g going from the product div on the main page, through to www.example.com/spotlight_1.php Is there anyway in PHP to carry the data from my index.php e.g. the ID through to the next page? so that I can have a template product.php page, and I can use a database pull to echo the product information required. So on index.php i click on the product with ID="1" and on the product.php page, it loads the relevant data for product 1. I can write the php SQL/mySQL calls myself, its just the way to carry accross a value from the previous page which I dont understand Regards Henry p.s. all the IDs and things are stored in the database already as 1 to 3digit values e.g. 3 or or 93 or 254 Any advice as always is greatly appreciated Regards Henry

• ASP.NET MVC routing issue with Google Chrome client

  My Silverlight 4 app is hosted in ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. It works fine when I browse with Internet Explorer 8. However Google Chrome (version 5) cannot find ASP.NET controllers. Specifically, the following ASP.NET controller works both with Chrome and IE. //[OutputCache(NoStore = true, Duration = 0, VaryByParam = "None")] public ContentResult TestMe() { ContentResult result = new ContentResult(); XElement response = new XElement("SvrResponse", new XElement("Data", "my data")); result.Content = response.ToString(); return result; } If I uncomment [OutputCache] attribute then it works with IE but not with Chrome. Also, I use custom model binding with controllers, so if I write the following: public ContentResult TestMe(UserContext userContext) { ... } it also works with IE, but again not with Chrome which gives me error message saying that resource was not found. Of course, I configured IIS 6 for handling all requests via aspnet_isapi.dll and I have registered custom model binder in my web app's Global.asax inside Application_Start() method. Can someone explain me what might be the cause? Thank you.
