• Do you keep your ideas secret? and why?

  I believe any programmer has several ideas that she/he considers as innovative or at least valuable. It may be an idea of a new product which will make this world better or a new development approach, etc. But a great idea must be implemented and promoted/advertised. This requires a lot of work (proofs of concept, prototypes, technology previews, etc.) and a lot of money (appropriate advertisement, marketing, etc.). So months later, the idea stays in our heads, but nothing else is done, because it's difficult, long and expensive, sometimes even impossible for a single developer. On the other hand, it would be painful to share our ideas, and see a medium-size company which has enough resources making something useful from it and having success and money. So what do you do with your ideas you can hardly implement or patent? Do you talk freely about them in discussion boards and with other developers? Do you keep them like a precious thing without never talking about them to anybody? If you keep your ideas, why are you doing so? Is it just because you hope that one day, you will be able to implement them and have a huge success, while you know very well by experience that it's an utopia?

• When to use each user research method

  There are a lot of user research methods out there, but sometimes we get stuck in a rut, conducting all formative usability testing before coding, or running surveys to gather satisfaction data. I'll be the first to admit that it happens to me, but to get out of a rut, it just takes a minute to look at where I am in the design & development cycle, what kind(s) of data I need, and what methods are available to me. We need reminders, or refreshers, every once in a while. One tool I've found useful is a graphic organizer that I created many years ago. It's been through several revisions, as I've adapted it to the product cycles of the places I've worked, changed my mind about how to categorize it, and added methods that I've used or created over time. I shared a version of this table at the 2012 International UPA conference, and I was contacted by someone yesterday who wanted to use it in a university course on user-center design. I was flattered at the the thought, but embarrassed, because I was sure it needed updating -- that was a year ago, after all. But I opened it today, and really, there's not much I'd change -- sure, I could add some nuance regarding what types of formative testing, such as modality (remote, unmoderated remote, or in-person) or flavor of testing (RITE, RITE-Krug, comparative, performance), but I think it's pretty much ok as is. The real value lies in the reminder that I have options. And what those options are change as the field changes, so while I don't expect this graphic to have an eternal shelf life, it's still ok a year after I last updated it. • Windows Embedded Compact 7

  This will be the official name of the new release of Windows CE. Windows Embedded Compact 7 is available as a public CTP and it already supports a wide range of CPUs and both the device emulator and VirtualPC emulated environments. So I’ll have to learn a new (and longer) name for my favorite OS… but I (and all my two readers!) will be able to test it as soon as the download from connect web site completes (I'm sorry for my readers, but you'll have to download it by yourselves). Here’s a link for the download (it's free but you’ll have to register on connect with a valid LiveId): https://connect.microsoft.com/windowsembeddedce Remember that this is still a beta (or “Community Technology Preview” if you speak marketing language) and so it’s better to not install it on your main development PC (or, at least, backup everything before installation) and that the features and performances you’ll get from this beta may not be the same ones of the final release of the OS.   Just a quick post to celebrate another siginificant milestone for Exalogic! After a few days of preparations and some hard work we succeeded in upgrading our Exalogic quarterrack to the newly released Elastic Cloud version 2.0.1.1.0. This version was just recently released on July 25th. This new version turns your Exalogic into a virtual datacenter with many very neat cloud provisioning capabilities. There are many more possibilities in this version to provide strict network and vServer group isolation where needed and it helps you manage multitenancy and delegate your cloud administration. How did we fare? Apart from some small inconveniences and minor issues I can tell you it all went remarkably well, provided you do proper homework on the prerequisite requirements and you stick to the instructions all the way through (there’s some 37 steps to cover). • Are you ready to take a walk in the clouds?

  Cloud computing is here, whether we want it or not.  When I say "a walk in the clouds” I am not talking about a pleasant romantic comedy, but a real alternative to hosting applications on-premise.  For years we have had the power to host our web sites on remote systems.  Sure, challenges existed.  Mostly web sites.  I could, with a few clicks, create a account at a myriad of web host sites, put my site in the hands of a remote hosting company, and boom, I was a site on the internet.  But choices, power, and management was limited. Now, we have a set of services to let us approach and power and control we love, but with scalability of the data center.  My personal web site is hosted on a laptop running hyperV in my basement.  I have to manage the machine, patch it, make sure it is powered up.  This is fine for the “hello, this is my dog skippy site” that I maintain. If the football pool I run has an issue, one of the 10 users I have calls or emails me and I go check it out.  All is well. But this falls well below the needs of even the simplest of enterprises.  A business needs a stronger datacenter, a better pipe to the world.  Do I really want to base my business on a dynamic dns and a dsl line from the local phone company? Cloud computing gives us most of what I value (control, a db of my own, updating my site from Visual Studio). • You wouldn&rsquo;t drink 9 year old milk would you?

  This is an absolutely brilliant campaign to urge users that its time to move on from IE 6. I like how it puts it terms that everyone can understand and has probably experienced at one time or another. How many times have you opened the milk, took a sniff, and experienced that visceral reaction that accompanies catching a whiff of milk that has turned to the dark side of the force? I call it Darth Vader milk. :-) Of course I’m assuming that you haven’t used IE 6 for a long time now. It is our responsibility as information technology workers to communicate to our friends and family how lame using IE 6 is. Shame them into upgrading if necessary. I don’t care how you get through to them but get through. Tell them that only losers use IE 6. Tell them you’ll cut them out of the your will. Tell them they’re banned from your annual BBQ blowout. Tell them that [insert their favorite celebrity’s name here] thinks people using IE6 are losers.  :-) Seriously, IE6 sucks and blows at the same time and has got to go for a number of reasons including the security leaks that come with using it. Confidentially, I urge them to upgrade for purely selfish reasons. Because I am the first level of computer support for waaaaaay to many of my family members I always advocate they use a current browser (IE 8 or Firefox) and anti-virus software (AVG). Call me selfish but I’d rather not waste my time dealing with a virus or malware that could potentially slip through with IE6. Yes, I’m selfish with my time that way. :-) Have a day. :-|

• November 2012 Chicago IT Architects Group Meeting Recap

  So the year is coming to an end.  A hearty few came out two days before Thanksgiving to discuss adopting agile in the enterprise.  While Norm Murrin claimed to be nervous about talking in front of a group your wouldn’t have known by his presentation.  He really made a topic that has always been hard to relate very personal.  This lead to some great discussion.  I came out of looking for ways to investigate agile further.  His presentation can be found here. This was our last meeting for the year.  We are looking forward to next year and are starting to line up some speakers and topics.  At this point we have an Azure presentation coming in February and are ironing out talks for January and March.  If your would like to join us and have topics you would like to see presented contact me through this blog.  Either leave a comment here or use the contact page.  I would love to hear from you. • When mapping the surface of a sphere with tiles, how might you deal with polar distortion?

  It's easy to deal with the way locations interact on a clean Cartesian grid. It's just vanilla math. And you can kind of ignore the geometry of the sphere's surface for a bunch of it if you want to just truncate the poles or something. But I keep coming up with ideas for games where the polar space matters. Geo-coded ARGs and global roguelikes and stuff. I want square(ish?) locations -- reasonably representable by square tiles of the same size across the globe, anyway. This has to be a solved problem, right? What are the solutions? ETA: At the equator -- and assuming that your square locations are reasonably small, it's close enough to true that you can get away with having one square in the rows north and south of the most equatorial row. And you could probably get away with that by just hand-waving the difference up to like 45-degrees or so. But eventually, you need to have fewer squares in a pole-ward circumferential row. If I reduce the length of the row by one and offset the squares by 1/2 then they're just like hexes and it's relatively easy to do the coding to keep track of the connections. But as you get pole-ward, it gets more and more extreme. Projecting the surface of the world onto the surface of a cube is tempting. But I figured there must be more elegant solutions already in use. If I did the cube thing (not dissecting it further through geodesy) Are there any pros and cons related to placing the pole at the center of a face or at the vertex of three sides?
