  • Questions every good Java/J2EE Developer should be able to answer?

    - by Rachel
I was going through Questions every good .Net developer should be able to answer and was highly impressed with the content and approach of this question, and so in the same spirit, I am asking this question for Java/J2EE Developer. What questions do you think should a good Java/J2EE programmer be able to answer? I am marking this question as community wiki as it is not user specific and it aims to serve programming community at large. Looking forward for some amazing responses. EDIT: Please answer questions too, as suggested in the comments, so that people could learn something new regarding the language, too.

  • pyopengl: Could it replace c++ ?

    - by Tom
Hi everyone. I'm starting a computer graphics course, and I have to choose a language. Choices are between C++ and Python. I have no problem with C++, python is a work in progress. So i was thinking to go down the python road, using pyopengl for graphics part. I have heard though, that performance is an issue. Is python / pyopengl mature enough to challenge C++ on performance? I realize its a long shot, but I'd like to hear your thoughts, experiences on uses of pyopengl. Thanks in advance.

  • Python Core Library and PEP8

    - by Szymon Guz
I was trying to understand why Python is said to be a beautiful language. I was directed to the beauty of PEP 8... and it was strange. In fact it says that you can use any convention you want, just be consistent... and suddenly I found some strange things in the core library: request() getresponse() set_debuglevel() endheaders() http://docs.python.org/py3k/library/http.client.html The below functions are new in the Python 3.1. What part of PEP 8 convention is used here? popitem() move_to_end() http://docs.python.org/py3k/library/collections.html So my question is: is PEP 8 used in the core library, or not? Why is it like that? Is there the same situation as in PHP where I cannot just remember the name of the function because there are possible all ways of writing the name? Why PEP 8 is not used in the core library even for the new functions?

  • Building Java projects with circular imports in Eclipse

    - by Buggieboy
I have a legacy Java (not my native language) app that I'm trying to build in Eclipse Galileo. As it's not my own, I can't speak to the quality of the design, but I am coming across a number of instances where I'll have something like this: In a project called, say, "lib_a", I'll have a file containing this: import com.acme.lib_b.onething; Project "lib_b" on the other hand, will contain: import com.acme.lib_a.anotherthing; Of course, the problem is that one project can't be built because the errors prevent me from creating a .jar file that can be added as an external archive to the other project, and vice versa. It seems to me that this must be a fairly common occurence in building Java applications. Rewriting it from scratch is not an option here, so I'd like to know "what other folks do."

  • Does pdksh (public domain korn shell) support associative arrays?

    - by George Jempty
I recently ran up against a wall doing some bash shell programming where an associative array would have solved my problems. I googled about features of the Korn shell and learned that it supports associative arrays, so I installed Cygwin's pdksh (public domain korn shell). However, when trying to create an associative array in the prescribed manner (typeset -A varName), I received the following errors, so I'm beginning to suspect pdksh does not support associative arrays. ./find_actions.ksh: line 2: typeset: -A: invalid option typeset: usage: typeset [-afFirtx] [-p] name[=value] ... Guess I'll be considering Perl instead, but I really wanted a good excuse to learn a dialect/language new to me

  • Hash 32bit int to 16bit int?

    - by dkamins
What are some simple ways to hash a 32-bit integer (e.g. IP address, e.g. Unix time_t, etc.) down to a 16-bit integer? E.g. hash_32b_to_16b(0x12345678) might return 0xABCD. Let's start with this as a horrible but functional example solution: function hash_32b_to_16b(val32b) { return val32b % 0xffff; } Question is specifically about JavaScript, but feel free to add any language-neutral solutions, preferably without using library functions. Simple = good. Wacky+obfuscated = amusing.

  • Match returning a string instead of object

    - by Pablo
This simple regex matching returns a string instead of an object on every browser but the latest firefox... text = "language. Filename: My Old School Yard.avi. File description: File size: 701.54 MB. View on Megavideo. Enter this, here:" name = text.match(/(Filename:)(.*) File /); alert(typeof(name)); as far as i know this the match function is suppose to return an object (Array). Has anyone come across this issue?

  • Go Channels in Ruby

    - by Julius Eckert
In the Go programming language, you can send Messages around using a construct called "Channels". http://golang.org/doc/effective_go.html#channels I would love to use something like that in Ruby, especially for IPC. Pseudocode of what I want: channel = Channel.new fork do 3.times{ channel.send("foo ") } exit! end Thread.new do 3.times{ channel.send("bar ") } end loop do print channel.recv end # ~> bar foo foo bar bar foo Is there any construct, library or equivalent for Ruby which works like that ? If not: What is the best way to build such an abstraction?

  • java equivalent of ruby's ||= syntax

    - by brad
I'm brand new to java, coming from a ruby world. One thing I love about ruby is the very terse syntax such as ||=. I realize of course that a compiled language is different, but I'm wondering if Java has anything similar. In particular, what I do all the time in ruby is something like: someVar ||= SomeClass.new I think this is incredibly terse, yet powerful, but thus far the only method I can think of to achieve the same thing is a very verbose: if(someVar == null){ someVar = new SomeClass() } Just trying to improve my Java-fu and syntax is certainly one area that I'm no pro.

  • project organization between x86 and x64

    - by Steve
I have a mixed language solution in VS2008. I would like to structure the bin such that I have bin\x86\Release and bin\x64\Release among the other options. I can do something like this if I have all C# or all C++, but as the platform names don't overlap (x86 vs. Win32) between C++ and C#, I can't seem to do this with the macros (and have an easy solution). I've tried to add a new platform and it won't let me. Is there an easy way to do this?

  • iPhone development time...

    - by Tisch
I have been asked to develop a relatively simple iPhone application. However, it would be my first application. I am a fairly competent programmer and can turn my skills to a new language fairly quickly... what my question is, is... How long has it taken some of you guys to make your first iPhone application and what was your experience like? Also, if you can say this sort of information, how much did you charge for it?! Thanks in advance. Kindest Regards Tom

  • Tomcat Compression Does Not Add a Content-Encoding: gzip in the Header

    - by Julien Chastang
I am using Tomcat to compress my HTML content like this: <Connector port="8080" maxHttpHeaderSize="8192" maxProcessors="150" maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="25" maxSpareThreads="75" enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" acceptCount="150" connectionTimeout="20000" disableUploadTimeout="true" compression="on" compressionMinSize="128" noCompressionUserAgents="gozilla, traviata" compressableMimeType="text/html" URIEncoding="UTF-8" /> In the HTTP header (as observed via YSlow), however, I am not seeing Content-Encoding: gzip resulting in a poor YSlow score. All I see is HeadersPost Response Headers Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1 Content-Type: text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Language: en-US Content-Length: 5251 Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2009 23:33:51 GMT I am running an apache mod_jk Tomcat configuration. How do I compress HTML content with Tomcat, and also have it add "Content-Encoding: gzip" in the header?

  • Is my form password being passed in clear text?

    - by liinkas
This is what my browser sent, when logging into some site: POST http://www.some.site/login.php HTTP/1.0 User-Agent: Opera/8.26 (X2000; Linux i686; Z; en) Host: www.some.site Accept: text/html, application/xml;q=0.9, application/xhtml+xml, image/png, image/jpeg, image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, */*;q=0.1 Accept-Language: en-US,en;q=0.9 Accept-Charset: iso-8859-1, utf-8, utf-16, *;q=0.1 Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip, x-gzip, identity, *;q=0 Referer: http://www.some.site/ Proxy-Connection: close Content-Length: 123 Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded lots_of_stuff=here&e2ad811=my_login_name&e327696=my_password&lots_of_stuff=here Can I state that anyone can sniff my login name and password for that site? Maybe just on my LAN? If so (even only on LAN ) then I'm shocked. I thought using <input type="password"> did something more than make all characters look like ' * ' p.s. If it matters I played with netcat (on linux) and made connection browser <= netcat (loged here) <= proxy <= remote_site

  • GDI fast scroll

    - by genesys
Hi! I use GDI to create some custom textwidget. I draw directly to the screen, unbuffered. now i'd like to implement some fast scrolling, that simply pixelshifts the respective part of the framebuffer (and only redraws the newly visible lines). I noticed that for example the rich text controls does it like this. If i use some GDI drawing functions to directly draw to the framebuffer, over a rich text control, and then scroll the rich text, it will also scroll my drawing along with the text. so i assume the rich text simply pixelshifts it's part of the framebuffer. I'd like to do the same, but don't know how to do so. Can someone help? (independant of programming language)) thanks!

  • Algorithm to determine coin combinations

    - by A.J.
I was recently faced with a prompt for a programming algorithm that I had no idea what to do for. I've never really written an algorithm before, so I'm kind of a newb at this. The problem said to write a program to determine all of the possible coin combinations for a cashier to give back as change based on coin values and number of coins. For example, there could be a currency with 4 coins: a 2 cent, 6 cent, 10 cent and 15 cent coins. How many combinations of this that equal 50 cents are there? The language I'm using is C++, although that doesn't really matter too much. edit: This is a more specific programming question, but how would I analyze a string in C++ to get the coin values? They were given in a text document like 4 2 6 10 15 50 (where the numbers in this case correspond to the example I gave)

  • What are logical and path queries

    - by NomeN
I'm reading a paper which mentions that a language for refactoring has three specific requirements. functional features (like ML) logical queries (like Datalog) path queries (like Datalog) I know what they mean by functional features, but I'm not totally clear on the latter two and can't find a clear explanation either. Although I have a good idea after what I could find on the subjects, I need to be sure so here goes: Could the SO-community please clearly explain to me what logical queries and path queries are? Or at the very least what the people from the paper meant?

  • Dynamic choices for Django SelectMultiple Widget

    - by PhilGo20
I'm building a form (not modelForm) where i'd like to use the SelectMultiple Widget to display choices based on a query done during the init of the form. I can think of a few way to do this but I am not exactly clear on the right way to do it. I see different options. I get the "choices" I should pass to the widget in the form init but I am not sure how I should pass them. class NavigatorExportForm(forms.Form): def __init__(self,user, app_id, *args,**kwargs): super (NavigatorExportForm, self ).__init__(*args,**kwargs) # populates the form language_choices = Navigator.admin_objects.get(id=app_id).languages.all().values_list('language', flat=True) languages = forms.CharField(max_length=2, widget=forms.SelectMultiple(choices=???language_choices))

  • Why use Oracle Application Express for web app?

    - by Jack
Hi all. I believe we're moving to Oracle Apex for future development. I've read about Oracle Apex on wikipedia and it's pro and con. It seem to me the con outweigh the pro but maybe I'm wrong. I get the sense that Oracle Apex is for DBA with little or no programing knowledge to setup a web app quickly sort like MS Access for none programmer. If you have Oracle Apex working experience, can you share your though? From wikipedia's entry, it doesn't seem like you need to know any programming language at all but just the PL/SQL? edit: Is Oracle Apex scalable? Can it handle traffic like Facebook's size? Thank. • Efficient heaps in purely functional languages

    - by Kim
As an exercise in Haskell, I'm trying to implement heapsort. The heap is usually implemented as an array in imperative languages, but this would be hugely inefficient in purely functional languages. So I've looked at binary heaps, but everything I found so far describes them from an imperative viewpoint and the algorithms presented are hard to translate to a functional setting. How to efficiently implement a heap in a purely functional language such as Haskell? Edit: By efficient I mean it should still be in O(n*log n), but it doesn't have to beat a C program. Also, I'd like to use purely functional programming. What else would be the point of doing it in Haskell?

  • jQuery to get the text attribute of a checkbox

    - by Andriyev
Hi I'm adding a check box to a page using the following statement; <script language="C#" runat="server"> protected void Page_Load ( object src, EventArgs e ) { if (!IsPostBack) { CheckBox XChkBox = new CheckBox(); //instance of System.Web.UI.WebControls.CheckBox XChkBox.ID = "someId" XChkBox.Text = "someText" somePlaceHolder.Controls.Add(XChkBox); } } </script> I need to get the Text attribute of that check box on click. I tried $(this).attr('Text'); inside $('input[type=checkbox]').click(function(){}); but it returns undefined. Where am I going wrong? Please suggest. cheers
