• Use virtual pageviews for all goal tracking

  Hi Pro Webmasters, I'm new to Google Analytics and I'm wondering if it would be cleaner to user virtual pageviews for all the goal tracking on my website instead of using a mix of regular page views and virtual pageviews. I know in most cases this is just semantics but there are multiple pages where the same goal can be achieved and I think it would be cleaner just to fire the same virtual pageview instead of having two different goal pages. Will this model also give developers more flexibility when they do development? I know we are moving to a CMS and urls can get hairy, so I think this might be a good way to make analytics portion of the site "future proof". Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks.

• How does google calculate bounce rate?

  Hello We run a website where we sell access to a member area. We use Google analytics to optimize the site but i have a bounce rate in about 85%. The problem is that I'm not sure what count as a bounce and whats not. If a person go to my front page and log in directly. Will this count as a bounce because there is no analytics on the member pages or is Google smart enough to see that the link is on my side? Thanks a lot.

• How to facilitate code reviews in a small team for embedded software?

  Short Question Does a cost-effective tool / workflow exist to facilitate code reviews in a small team? More specifically, a small team that relies on post-commit code reviews. Background Our team currently consists of 3 full time and 1 part time software engineers, with plans on hiring more in the near future. Due to our team size and volume of projects we all must juggle, the pre-commit workflow that major tools (such as Review Board and Code Collaborator) use is not obtainable for us right now. The best we can do at the moment is to perform post-commit reviews before major releases or as time permits. Nearly all of our projects are hosted on RepositoryHosting.com (which I highly recommend) and contain a mixture of SVN and GIT repositories. Current Thoughts Since I cannot find a tool that fits our needs right now, I am turning to TRAC that is built into our repository's site. At the moment we use TRAC to file tickets and track milestones, so to me this seems like a natural fit for code review results as well. The direction I am heading in right now is to use a spread sheet(s) to log all of the bugs and comments. Do some macro magic to get it in a format that I can use TRAC's import ticket method and use TRAC's ticketing system to create the action items / bug reports automatically. The auto ticket generation is darn near a must have, adding in bugs and comments one at a time from a web-gui is really painful. Secondary Question If this workflow makes sense, is there a good / standard template to use as a code review log?

• Best stats tool for cross-domain tracking

  We build a webapp that allows users to run the app under their own subdomain. So we run the app under search.domainX.com, search.domainY.com and so on. They each have their own Google Analytics to track individual stats. But we want to know what general traffic for all clients of our app. So we want to know stuff like "among all our clients we had x number of views." What is the best way tool to track that sort of thing. We prefer a snippet based solution similar to Google Analytics if possible.

  In any browser if I use www.mysite.com or just mysite.com the web page is correctly retrieved, but I am having trouble with Google Analytics and Facebook App. Facebook: To be able to get Likes, I create the Facebook App needed and set the site URL to http://mysite.com/. Using their tool http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/ when I test my page using http://mypage.com it works but using http://www.mypage.com fails with the message: Object at URL 'http://www.mysite.com/' of type 'website' is invalid because the domain 'www.mysite.com' is not allowed for the specified application id. Google Analytics: To be able to get traffic statistics, I created a Property and a Profile both with the URL http://www.mypage.com and no statistics were gathered in a week, when I changed the configured URL to http://mypage.com statistics where available a few hours later. What should I do to have statistics and likes for both www.mysite.com and mysite.com ??

  I need to search the web for sites that are in our industry that use the same Adwords management company, to ensure that the said company is not violating our contract, as they have been accused of doing. They use a tracking code in the template of every page which has a certain domain in the URL, and I'm wondering if it's possible "Google" the source code using some bot that crawls the code rather than the content? For example, I bought an unlimited license for an image gallery, and I was asked to type the license number in a comment just before the script. I thought it was just so a human could look at the source and find out if someone paid, but it turned out that it was actually that they had a crawler looking for their source code and that comment. If it ran across the code on your site, it would look for the comment, and if it found one, it would check to see if it was an existing one. If not, it would first notify you of your noncompliance, and then notify the owner of the script. Edit: I'm looking to index HTML and JavaScript only, not the server-side languages or Java.

• How do I deal with code of bad quality contributed by a third party?

  I've recently been promoted into managing one of our most important projects. Most of the code in this project has been written by a partner of ours, not by ourselves. The code in question is of very questionable quality. Code duplication, global variables, 6-page long functions, hungarian notation, you name it. And it's in C. I want to do something about this problem, but I have very little leverage on our partner, especially since the code, for all its problems, "just works, doesn't it?". To make things worse, we're now nearing the end of this project and must ship soon. Our partner has committed a certain number of person-hours to this project and will not put in more hours. I would very much appreciate any advice or pointers you could give me on how to deal with this situation.

  In every area of life there are people with some bad habits or misbehaviors that affect the work process. Software development is also not free of this kind of people. Today I will introduce you code wanderer. Who is code wanderer? Code wandering is more like bad habit than serious diagnose. Code wanderers tend to review and “fix” source code in files written by others. When code wanderer has some free moments he starts to open the code files he or she has never seen before and starts making little fixes to these files. Why is code wanderer dangerous? These fixes seem correct and are usually first choice to do when considering nice code. But as changes are made by coder who has no idea about the code he or she “fixes” then “fixing” usually ends up with messing up working code written by others. Often these “fixes” are not found immediately because they doesn’t introduce errors detected by compilers. So these “fixes” find easily way to production environments because there is also very good chance that “fixed” code goes through all tests without any problems. How to stop code wanderer? The first thing is to talk with person and explain him or her why those changes are dangerous. It is also good to establish rules that state clearly why, when and how can somebody change the code written by other people. If this does not work it is possible to isolate this person so he or she can post his or her changes to code repository as patches and somebody reviews those changes before applying them.

  I'm using URL rewriting to make my url http://example.com/foo/bar/ to http://example.com/index.php/foo/bar. I'm not linking the index.php/.. url anywhere, but for some reasons, some users arrives to the index.php url. In Google analytics, I have a lot of duplicates that are quite annoying to follow up the traffic. I've watched the Advanced filters but I'm struggling to make it works fine. Current process: We have a GIT server with a master branch to which everyone commits Devs work off the local master mirror or a local feature branch Devs commit to server's master branch Devs request code review on last commit Problem: Any bug in code review are already in master by the time it's caught. Worse, usually someone has burnt a few hours trying to figure out what happened... So, we would like To do code review BEFORE delivery into the 'master'. Have a process that works with a global team (no over the shoulder reviews!) something that doesn't require an individual dev to be at his desk/machine to be powered up so someone else can remote in (remove human dependency, devs go home at different timezones) We use TortoiseGIT for a visual representation of a list of files changed, diff'ing files etc. Some of us drop into a GIT shell when the GUI isn't enough, but ideally we'd like the workflow to be simple and GUI based (I want the tool to lift any burden, not my devs).

We're already tracking things like category using google analytics custom variables. We've used three of the five available slots so far. How can we track tags the same way? If we just mush them all together - e.g. 'football, sms, nsfw' then can we track the ones that are tagged 'football'? What's the right way to track multi-valued page attributes using custom variables?

  I have an HTML page hosted in Dropbox that some external websites link to. I want to redirect to a different page using only HTML or Javascript, since I can't use any server-side redirects. My goal is to be able to keep the original referral information for analytics. I've tried different ways but they all end up showing up with no referral. So if a blog that I have no control over (B) links to my public static page on Dropbox (D), and I want a redirect to the new page hosted elsewhere (N), I would like for the analytics for N to be shown as B, not D.   As a follow up to my prev question: What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment To recap: I am stuck with a large software system with which a TDD ideology of "test often" does not work. And to make it even worse the features like pre-compiled headers/multi-threaded compilation/incremental linking, etc is not available to me - hence I think that the best way out would be to add the extensive logging into the system and to start "coding in large chunks", which I understand as code for a two-three hours first (as opposed to 15-20 mins in TDD) - thoroughly eyeball the code for a 15 minutes and only after all that do the compilation and run the tests. As I have been doing TDD for a quite a while, my code eyeballing / code verification skills got rusty (you don't really need this that much if you can quickly verify what you've done in 5 seconds by running a test or two) - so I am after a recommendations on how to learn these source code verification/error spotting skills again. I know I was able to do that easily some 5-10 years ago when I din't have much support from the compiler/unit testing tools I had until recently, thus there should be a way to get back to the basics.

  Recently I was asked to show "a page with code" for a job interview. Being mainly a back-end programmer, and that's the position I applied for, I first said to the person I was talking to exactly that: PHP is executed at the server and therefore not visible by just giving a "page". However, following their desire, I sent links to the pages I've worked on before. Obviously they couldn't see anything except for the HTML, CSS, JS... They said it was not enough, they could not see the PHP. Understanding that they probably just wanted to know my skills and/or interest I sent them my Stack Overflow profile. Among all my questions and answers, most of them with code, certainly the PHP is there. But it seems this is not what they wanted. Well, I don't have any code put together that I can simply publish for someone to see. And I would never do it for the code I have deployed, obviously. So my question is/are: What does "send us a page with code" mean? What should I send? Is this a typical interview requirement?

• Why is Cloudflare waiting for name servers for over 4 days?

  I've registered for Cloudflare's free plan and have completed the process of redirecting the DNS as instructed, including changing the name servers. This was done 4 days ago. The problem is that cloudflare is giving me: "websites" -- "Finishing up. Waiting for your name servers to change to * Please allow up to 24 hours to complete this process (info)" "dashboards" -- "Analytics data could not be loaded. You do not have any initialized zones" I can see via traceroute that CloudFlare is the DNS to my site. Also, somehow this has messed up with my google analytics account so I have no idea if I get visitors to my site or not. What should be done to fix this?
