  • How can i mock or test my deferred execution functionality?

    I have what could be seen as a bizarre hybrid of IQueryable<T> and IList<T> collections of domain objects passed up my application stack. I'm trying to maintain as much of the 'late querying' or 'lazy loading' as possible. I do this in two ways: By using a LinqToSql data layer and passing IQueryable<T>s through by repositories and to my app layer. Then after my app layer passing IList<T>s but where certain elements in the object/aggregate graph are 'chained' with delegates so as to defer their loading. Sometimes even the delegate contents rely on IQueryable<T> sources and the DataContext are injected. This works for me so far. What is blindingly difficult is proving that this design actually works. Ie. If i defeat the 'lazy' part somewhere and my execution happens early then the whole thing is a waste of time. I'd like to be able to TDD this somehow. I don't know a lot about delegates or thread safety as it applies to delegates acting on the same source. I'd like to be able to mock the DataContext and somehow trace both methods of deferring (IQueryable<T>'s SQL and the delegates) the loading so that i can have tests that prove that both functions are working at different levels/layers of the app/stack. As it's crucial that the deferring works for the design to be of any value, i'd like to see tests fail when i break the design at a given level (separate from the live implementation). Is this possible?

    Let's say I have a subroutine/method that a user can call to test some data that (as an example) might look like this: sub test_output { my ($self, $test) = @_; my $output = $self->long_process_to_get_data(); if ($output =~ /\Q$test/) { $self->assert_something(); } else { $self->do_something_else(); } } Normally, $test is a string, which we're looking for anywhere in the output. This was an interface put together to make calling it very easy. However, we've found that sometimes, a straight string is problematic - for example, a large, possibly varying number of spaces...a pattern, if you will. Thus, I'd like to let them pass in a regex as an option. I could just do: $output =~ $test if I could assume that it's always a regex, but ah, but the backwards compatibility! If they pass in a string, it still needs to test it like a raw string. So in that case, I'll need to test to see if $test is a regex. Is there any good facility for detecting whether or not a scalar has a compiled regex in it?

  • Any utility to test expand C/C++ #define macros?

    It seems I often spend way too much time trying to get a #define macro to do exactly what i want. I'll post my current delemia below and any help is appreciated. But really the bigger question is whether there is any utility someone could reccomend, to quickly display what a macro is actually doing? It seems like even the slow trial and error process would go much faster if I could see what is wrong. Currently, I'm dynamically loading a long list of functions from a DLL I made. The way I've set things up, the function pointers have the same nanes as the exported functions, and the typedef(s) used to prototyp them have the same names, but with a prepended underscor. So I want to use a define to simplfy assignments of a long long list of function pointers. For example, In the code statement below, 'hexdump' is the name of a typdef'd function point, and is also the name of the function, while _hexdump is the name of the typedef. If GetProcAddress() fails, a failure counter in incremented. if (!(hexdump = (_hexdump)GetProcAddress(h, "hexdump"))) --iFail; So lets say I'd like to rplace each line like the above with a macro, like this... GETADDR_FOR(hexdump ) Well this is the best I've come up with so far.     Hi, I'm getting very confused about how to call my EF classes in a Class Library from the Client Project I have? Things worked fine when they were in the same project. Now I'm getting errors such as "Unable to load the specified metadata resource ". I've see various ideas / suggestions re how to fix the connection string (e.g. create an App.config in your client project & copy the connection string config from your class library, something about change the connection settings to copy to output, etc) QUESTION - Can someone provide a solid way on how to get EF class access from a separate project working? (i.e. how to get the correct connection information to the client somehow) thanks

  • What's the best way to test SQL Server connection programmatically?

    I need to develop a single routine that will be fired each 5 minutes to check if a list of SQL Servers (10 to 12) are up and running. I can try to obtain a simple query in each one of the servers but this means that I have to create a table, view or stored procedure in every server, even if I use any already made SP I need to have a registered user in each server too. The servers are not in the same physical location so having those requirements would be a complex task. Is there a way to simply "ping" from C# one SQL Server? Thanks in advance!

    I am reverse proxying one site to another site. It's working nicely, but on some links it displays the original link. For Example, there are two sections on my page: "about-us" and "inquiry". When I click on "about-us" it takes me to "http://test.mysite.com/about-us" which is ok When I click on "inquiry" it takes me to "http://mysite.com/inquiry" which is not correct it must be "http://test.mysite.com/inquiry". I think I've missed some thing to add in configuration file but I can't figure it out.

  • finding links that are hyper-links in jQuery

    Im trying to take a link either when clicked or hover over be able to grab the attribute href and tell if its a hyper-link or not. Also i want it to be able to tell me if its a hyper-link to my own site. Plus various other filters. The main purpose for this is so that when a internal link is clicked it will tell ajax to grab the content, alot of my links are generated (via wordpress)so I can't modify them too much. Another purpose for this is so i can also make all external links open on a new window. I have a solution that works on a simple test page but when i put into a working page it breaks. I know i am probably making this harder then it should be.   • Is there any way to remotely configure a Microsoft Lync account?

    There are no perl modules for Lync. No open source clients. Windows Powershell can do some things with it, but only on the server on which the server software is installed. It would be useful to be able to forward a certain desk phone number (we use Lync for voip) to a personal cell phone. We can do this from our own desktop machines, but only using the Lync client. It would be nice to be able to have a cron script run that just did rotations, I wouldn't have to carry around the lousy on-call phone with me. communicator.exe doesn't take any useful parameters. Nor are there any obvious function names in the DLLs that would let me just use rundll32.exe to accomplish this. There is a Lync SDK, but no examples of changing phone forwarding, and my Windows 7 machine refuses to install the Silverlight SDK dependency for some reason I can't fathom. Does anyone have any other ideas how I might accomplish this?

  • Do you think Microsoft is finally on the right track with its Windows 7?

    It has been a while now since Windows 7 has been released. So far I didn't hear of many major complaints about it. I can remember the time that Windows Vista hist the shelves. There were major complaints from both experts and just regular users. I do a lot of OS installs for just regular users. These are mostly family and friends, and sometimes there are some customers. Up till now I mostly still use Windows XP SP3, because it is stable and most people are familiar with it. I did Vista for some users but they always call me back with all sorts of questions and in the end I had to downgrade them to XP. Do you think it is safe now to recommend Windows 7 as a good operating system? Offcourse their hardware has to support it, but let's say that is the case. If you install Windows 7 a lot for people, what are the complaints about if you get them?

  • How to distribute multiple executions of an app across many machines

    I've got a simulation app (64-bit windows) that runs without any user interaction. This app gathers information and pushes it to a remote MS SQL Server. What I'd like to do is execute this simulation as many times as I can on multiple machines after our nightly build has finished and it has passed the test suite. If possible I'd love to have the ability to configure it to stop after x total runs or if the entire batch has taken over y hours. I've tried using Visual Studio's built in test framework since we already have a test lab set up with multiple agents. I created a single unit test that simply runs the simulation then I created an ordered test and added that single test multiple times (from what I gather, this is the only way to execute the same unit test more than once). I found that ordered tests are only run on a single agent and not distributed which is very limiting. We use TeamCity to perform our nightly builds and I suspect it's possible to implement this on top of that, but I'm fairly new to TeamCity. We also have Jenkins and Bamboo available and I'm open to any other software that would get the job done presuming it runs on a 64-bit Windows OS. Any suggestions?
