• Physics from other games

  I'm making a platform engine with XNA Game Studio, and I've solved almost everything about colliding stuff. But now, I'm searching for good physics for the player, I'm trying to emulate characters from other games like Mario from Super Mario World, or MegaMan X... do you know a website or something, where the physics from that games are revealed? I remember seen a page with something like that. Or what's the process you think is the best to emulate physics from other games? Just trial and error? Thank you.

• How do you handle increasingly long compile times when working with templates?

  I use Visual Studio 2012 and he have cases where we added templates parameters to a class "just" in order to introduce a "seam point" so that in unit-test we can replace those parts with mock objects. How do you usually introduce seam points in C++: using interfaces and/or mixing based on some criteria with implicit interfaces by using templates parameters also ? One reason to ask this is also because when compiling sometimes a single C++ file (that includes templates files, that could also include other templates) results in an object file being generated that takes in the order of around 5-10 seconds on a developer machine. VS compiler is also not particularly fast on compiling templates as far as I understand, and because of the templates inclusion model (you practically include the definition of the template in every file that uses it indirectly and possibly re-instantiate that template every time you modify something that has nothing to do with that template) you could have problems with compile times (when doing incremental compiling). What are your ways of handling incremental(and not only) compile time when working with templates (besides a better/faster compiler :-)).

• Q&amp;A: Will my favourite ORM Foo work with SQL Azure?

  short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with SQL Azure, but the Visual Studio designer does not currently work. You will need to point the designer at a version of your database running of SQL Server to create the mapping, then change the connection details to run against SQL Azure. LINQ to SQL has similar issues to ADO.NET Entity Framework above NHibernate can be used against SQL Azure DevExpress XPO supports SQL Azure from version 9.3 DataObjects.Net supports SQL Azure Open Access from Telerik works “seamlessly”  - their words not mine :-) The list above is by no means comprehensive – please leave a comment with details of other ORMs that work (or do not work) with SQL Azure. • Cannot Install Wine Windows platform loader both from Terminal and software Center

  I recently installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my PC. I want to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, so I tried to install WINE. I tried to install from the Terminal and from the Software Center. Both times, it failed in the middle of process. This is the error. W:Failed to fetch http://pk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/raring/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found W:Failed to fetch http://pk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/raring/restricted/source/Sources 404 Not Found E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. How can I fix this?

• Recommended solutions for integrating iOS with .NET, at the service tier

  I'm developing an application, in iOS, that is required to connect to my Windows Server to poll for new data, update, etc. As a seasoned C# developer, my first instinct is to start a new project in Visual Studio and select Web Service, letting my bias (and comfort level) dictate the service layer of my application. However, I don't want to be biased, and I don't base my decision on a service which I am very familiar with, at the cost of performance. I would like to know what other developers have had success using, and if there is a default standard for iOS service layer development? Are there protocols that are easier to consume than others within iOS? Better ones for the size and/or compression of data? Is there anything wrong with using SOAP? I know it's "big" in comparison to protocols like JSON.

• Dot Net Code Coverage Test Tools - there is now a choice

  I have been pleasantly surprised this week to discover that there is a choice of tools for measuring Code Coverage. If you have Visual Studio Team edition, then if you are using MSTEST, then you have built-in code coverage, however even then you may need a standalone tool. The tools I have found are (costs are per seat): 1) NCover  http://www.ncover.com/ (from $199 to $658 per seat) I have used it but it is very expensive. 2) PartCover http://sourceforge.net/projects/partcover/ - Free!  Steep initial learning curve to get it to work. 3) Dot Cover from http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/ - Personal licence - normally $99 but at a introductory price of $75 and free for OpenSource Developers (details at http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/buy/buy.jsp#opensource_) 4) Test Matrix from http://submain.com/products/testmatrix.aspx - $149 for a licence

• User eXperience

  The last few months I have been spending a lot of time designing (and help design) the developer experience for the areas I contribute to (in future versions of Visual Studio). As a technical person who defines feature sets, it is easy to get engulfed in the pure technical side of things and ignore the details that ultimately make users "love" using the product to achieve their goal, instead of just "having to use" it. Engaging in UX design helps me escape that trap. In case you are also interested in the UX side of development, I thought I'd share an interesting site I came across: UX myths. • Be careful when Git suppresses bin Folders

  Initial situation Often for Visual Studio projects the typical content of a .gitignore file contains this line bin or [B|b]in It is used to avoid that Git tries to track compile outputs as repository relevant data. Problem But keep in mind: this will also suppress bin folders of additional stuff like frameworks and toolsets. For instance Microsoft.SDKs contains a folder named Bin with a lot of programs Simian contains a folder named bin with the program themselves If you store such artifacts also in the repository - according to the principle of a “self containing project” – you could lost the content in the bin folder! Solution Till yet I don’t have a good idea. So I verify for each new added toolset or framework whether it has or has not such a bin folder. If it has, then I must add this bin folder manually to the repository so that Git track it.

• SQL Auto Close Options

  Found an interesting thing that others have run across but it is the first time I’ve seen it. A customer emailed to say that the SQL 2008 db that I had helped him with seemed to be going into recovery mode on a regular basis while watching the SQL Management Studio screen. Needless to say he was a bit nervous and about to take some drastic steps. Eventually he found that the Auto Close option was set to true. When this is set to true, the database automatically closes all connections and unlocks the mdf file after 300 milliseconds. When a new connection is made it spins backup… Great for xcopy deployment on a client machine but not a multi-user server based application. So the warning… if you have started a database with SQL express and then move it to a production SQL server, make sure you check that the Auto Close option is set to false. See options screen below:

• Wifi won't work without ethernet (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I have a strange problem. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I'm usually unable to access Wifi (I have a BCM43224 wireless card with the STA proprietary driver installed.) So I have to unplug the ethernet cable from my Wifi router and stick it into my laptop's ethernet port to access the Internet. But when I stick the cable back into the Wifi router and try connecting to Wifi, Wifi inexplicably starts working. How can I get Wifi to work all the time without having to 'jumpstart' it with an ethernet connection?

• Programmers Block ?? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is there such a thing as Programmer's block? Has anyone had writers block? Currently, I am trying to get back in to a development role but am struggling to develop any apps. I have a good understanding of VB and OOP. I developed last in the first version of .net studio and also foxpro 9. At the moment I have tried building a customer order app, the form and database have been straight forward but I'm struggling with the nuts and bolts of the application. Should it be a Web or Windows application? Should I use classes/modules? All advice is welcome.

• Is nesting types considered bad practice?

  As noted by the title, is nesting types (e.g. enumerated types or structures in a class) considered bad practice or not? When you run Code Analysis in Visual Studio it returns the following message which implies it is: Warning 34 CA1034 : Microsoft.Design : Do not nest type 'ClassName.StructueName'. Alternatively, change its accessibility so that it is not externally visible. However, when I follow the recommendation of the Code Analysis I find that there tend to be a lot of structures and enumerated types floating around in the application that might only apply to a single class or would only be used with that class. As such, would it be appropriate to nest the type sin that case, or is there a better way of doing it?

• Game engine like Unity 3D that allow me to use .NET code

  I've been looking at Unity 3D for developing a 3D PC game and I really like the scene editor and how it simplifies the process of constructing 3D scenes, managing assets, animations, transitions etc. However, I don't want to restrict myself to using the Unity 3D scripts for handling every bit of game logic in the game. E.g. If I want to construct a RPG dialogue system I don't want to do it with unity 3d scripts - I'd like to use C#/.net. Also, I might want to use e.g. windows azure and sql azure as backend, and use 3rd party .net libraries such as reactive-extensions etc. Is there a .net engine out there that helps me with asset loading, animations, physics, transitions, etc. with a scene editor, but allow me to plug it into a visual studio .net project? • Licensing a project

  Ok can someone clarify something for me ? Let's say I want to build a website and add publicity to it so I can make money out of my work. I would use Html5 for the interface and C# with Asp.net for the background programming. I would use Visual Studio as my IDE and SQL server as a database. This is just an example on the top of my head but I woudn't know where to start for the licenses. Do I need one : For VisualStudio and SQLServer only ? For VisualStudio, SQLServer and pay some kind of rights for Asp.net ? The whole package.. Both VisualStudio, SQlServer plus rights for Asp.net AND C# ? I know this question is a little vague but I really don't know where to start and the opinion of someone with experience int this might give me just the help I need to get started.

  I tried to install the Ubuntu Studio Graphics meta-package, however it didn't install correctly.The package gimp-plugin-registry just won`t install, i tried the one in the Software center and the one on the WebUp8 PPA neither package works. The following NEW packages will be installed: gimp-plugin-registry 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B/1395kB of archives. After this operation, 3592kB of additional disk space will be used. (Reading database ... 402557 files and directories currently installed.) But as we go through our usual dev cycles, we create these ApplicationIDs. Hell Visual Studio will create them for us, to make things easy!The problem is, many a developer, and some a ITOgre, may leave these AppPrincipalIds sitting there and not clean them up when they are done playing. You can look for currently registered App Principals at https://yourtenant/_layouts/15/appprincipals.aspx The problem is, that URL shows you App Principals registered AND currently in use. Currently NOT in use App Principals are NOT shown on that page. The same issue applies on premises also, even though here I am talking specifically about Office 365. • Debugging Windows

  After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there. • Ubuntu appears very small at 1080p, text almost undreadable.

  Alright... So I have a 15" dell studio xps with a 1080p screen. Everything seems really small with 1080p, in 720 everything is fine but just looks very low res. So I definitely want to get the full resolution the display can give me but dont want everything so small. help?? EDIT: Well yes higher resolution means more pixels. • combobox intem does not show in crystal report [migrated]

  I am creating a simple printing application using crstal reports, C# and visual studio 2010. On my winform I have some textboxes, comboboxes. Comboboxes are using data for fill from the XML file. On my report I created some parameters and linked with the selection of comboboxes. When I use: cryRpt.SetParameterValue("PAR3", cmbSome.SelectedIndex); on my report I see the 0 or 1 depending my item selection. Now I want to display, not the index but the value ie: Monday. If I use selectedItem, selectedText or selectedValue i do not see anything on my report. To see what happend i put another textbox on my form and linked it with the combobox selection as: txtProe.Text = Convert.ToString(cmbSome.SelectedItem); or txtProe.Text = cmbSome.Text; In both case when I click the button I see that my selection from cmbSome is passed to it. Does anyone knows what happens here ??!

• SQL Server Express Profiler

  During a recent project, while waiting for our Development Database to be provisioned on the clients corporate SQL Server Environment (these things can sometimes take weeks or months to be setup), we began our initial development against a local instance on SQL Server Express, just as an interim measure until the Development database was live.  This was going just fine, until we found that we needed to do some profiling to understand a problem we were having with the performance of our ORM generated Data Access Layer.  The full version of SQL Server Management Studio includes a profiler, that we could use to help with this kind of problem, however the Express version does not, so I was really pleased to find that there is a freely available Profiler for SQL Server Express imaginatively titled ‘SQL Server Express Profiler’, and it worked great for us.  http://sites.google.com/site/sqlprofiler/
