    I have an external javascript file that I want to, upon include, write some HTML to the end of the web page. Upon doing so though I get the error Missing } in XML expression on the line that uses dropdownhtml. Here is my code var dropdownhtml = '<div id="dropdown"></div>'; $(document).ready(function(){ //$(document).append(dropdownhtml); alert(dropdownhtml); }); The XHTML webpage that includes this file does so like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="/web/resources/js/dropdownmenu.js"></script> Doing either append or alert throws up the same error, what is going wrong?

  • Why does `Array.length`, `Function.length`, `String.length`, etc return 1?

    While teaching my JavaScript class yesterday, my students and I came across some interesting functionality that I thought might be worth capturing in a question and the answer I've come to. Typing Array.length in the JS console in chrome returns 1. Likewise, Function.length returns 1. This is important because: Every function in JavaScript is actually a Function object. (MDN JS Ref: Function) Thus, Object.length and likely all other native objects will and should return 1 as the value of the length property. So, finally why is this behavior occurring?

  • CKEditor plugin to close editor

    The problem with destroying the editor from within a plugin, is that certain code tries to use the editor after the destructive plugin code, when in fact the editor is no longer there, causing errors and instability. I have come up with the following code for a plugin which closes the editor using both async:true and setTimeout: var cancelAddCmd = { modes : { wysiwyg:1, source:1 }, async: true, exec : function( editor ) { if(confirm('Are you sure you want to cancel editing and discard all content?')) setTimeout(function() { editor.destroy(); }, 100); } }; The problem I see is that it uses a dodgy setTimout call that would likely have mixed results depending on the computer's speed of execution - 100ms might not have passed by the time it would be OK to destroy the editor. Is there a proper way to destroy the editor from within a plugin? Even with async: true; and no setTimeout errors are created. Maybe a possible solution would be to stop any existing/any more code related to the editor from running afterwards, if possible? I have tried using events, like on('afterCommandExec', function(){ editor.destroy(); }) and some other events, but that hasn't helped much... doesn't seem like there is an event for when the editor has jumped out of its stack call for handling the button. And there is no way to stop execution by disposing of the CKEditor instance more properly?

  • How to select form input based on label inner HTML?

    I have multiple forms that are dynamically created with different input names and id's. The only thing unique they will have is the inner HTML of the label. Is it possible to select the input via the label inner HTML with jQuery? Note that the label "for" and the input "id" share the same dynamic key, so this might be a way to maybe get the id, but wanted to see if there is a shorter way of doing this.

  • jQuery trigger custom event synchronously?

    I am using the jQuery trigger method to call an event... but it behaves inconsistently. Sometimes it call the event, sometimes it does not. <a href="#" onclick=" $(this).trigger('custom-event'); window.location.href = 'url'; return false; ">text</a> The custom-event has lots of listeners added to it. It is as if the trigger method is not synchronous, allowing the window.location.href be changed before executing the events. And when window.location.href is changed a navigation occurs, interrupting everything. How can I trigger events synchronously? Using jQuery 1.8.1. Thanks!   • How to push changes from Test server to Live server?

    As a beginner, I finally noticed the issue with making changes to the live server I've been working on, now that I have a couple users on it, since I bring it down so often. I created an EC2 image of my live server and set up a separate instance on EC2, so now I have 2 EC2 instances, Stage and Production. I set up GitHub and push changes to stage and test my code there, and when it's all done and working, I push it to the production branch, and everything is good. And there is a slight issue here since I name my files config_stage.js and config_production.js and set up .gitignore on each server, and in my code, I would have it read the ENV flags and set up the appropriate configs, is this the correct approach? And my main question is: how do you keep track of non-code changes to the server? For example, I installed HAProxy, Stunnel, Redis, MongoDB and several other things onto the Stage server for testing and now that it's all working and good, how do I deploy them to production? Right now, I'm just keeping track of everything I installed and copying configuration files over, which is very tedious and I'm afraid I may have missed a step somewhere. Is there a better way to port these changes over from my test server to my live server?

  • Getting live traffic/visitor analytics when using a reverse proxy

    I'm in process of implementing Varnish as a reverse proxy for a Ruby on Rails app and I'm using Google Analytics (JS/client side script to record visitor data) but it's several hours delayed so its useless for knowing what's going on now. I need at a glance live data that includes referring traffic and what current req/sec is. Right now I am using a simple Rack middleware application to do the live stats (gist.github.com/235745) but if the majority of traffic hits Varnish, Rack will never be hit so this won't work. The closest solution I've found so far is http://www.reinvigorate.net/ but it's in beta (there are also no implementation details on their front page). Does Varnish have traffic logs that I can custom format to match my Apache logs so I can combine them, or will I have to roll my own JS implementation like GA that shows the data in real time?

  • proxy.pac file performance optimization

    I reroute certain websites through a proxy with a proxy.pac file. However, I plan on adding quite a few more domains to it, and I'm guessing it will eventually be a list of 500-1000 domains. It's important to not reroute all traffic through the proxy. What's the best way to keep this file optimized, performance-wise ? Thanks

Chrome & safari, flash the home page then it disappears and the screen goes white. Firefox never loads anything and the spinner just keeps spinning. Loads fine in explorer. Any ideas of what may be going on? If I use my laptop, on my same home internet connection, it works fine. This is not happening on all sites with analytics, just certain ones.

  • Debug JS from browser without a server/localhost

    So something I do very frequently is writing random scripts in JS without really being part of an app. To run them I just paste them in the console of either Chrome of FF which works as a nice REPL, or if I really need more fancy debugging I just add it to my test app on localhost and browse it from the browser. Is there a way to get all the good debugging of a browser (breakpoints, locals, etc), without it being served from a server?, e.g by just copy-pasting my code into console or something?

    I have this strange problem, how exactly does control + enter decides the domain of a website?? If i type stackoverflow,then hit control+enter, it works and takes to homepage, but i type ubuntuforums, then hit control + enter, it does not recognise its ubuntuforums.org, but goes to ubuntuforums.com?? How does this exactly work? If i need to change this behaviour, how should i do it?

  • Free Markdown JS viewer

    I'd like to use Markdown for documents to be exchanged with a colleague of mine. The ideal workflow would be IMHO editing the source in any plaintext editor while simultaneously viewing it in a browser. The client viewer should be able to redraw the text after each save automatically, and ideally even always switch to the most recent source file (so I don't need to navigate there manually). It'd be nice if I could (was allowed) modify the viewer a bit, things like using trailing spaces for line breaks are really terrible (I don't see them, my editor strips them, git complains about them, etc.). I'm interested in a software capable of this and easy to modify, and also in your opinions on the described workflow.

  • How to take search query and append modifers to the end of it

    This is a greasemonkey question. What I'm trying to do is modify an old google discussions script. What were wanting to do is be able to take the google search query and add modifiers to the end of it. Like this: search query: "superuser" modifiers: inurl:greasemonkey+question end result: "superuser" inurl:greasemonkey+question The old script creates a new div within the "hdtb_more_mn" element which is where you get the new discussions tab. However, since the "tbm=dsc" option to do a discussion search has died, this script no longer works. Hence the need to add modifiers to your searches. I tried to edit the script, but it appends the modifiers to the end of the url which includes "&client=firefox-a&hs=8uS&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official". This means you're also searching for the above as well as your query, which doesn't work. I would like to be able to append the modifiers @ the end of the search querty, rather than the whole URL. I'm just not sure how to code it to where it adds the below "&tbm=" stuff within "discussionDiv.innerHTML" to the end of the query. The google search id seems to be, "gbqfq" for the search box, but I'm not sure how to add this id. I have a list of passwords, around 2000, and want to check them against this policy Password must contain a minimum of eight (8) characters Password must contain at least one letter Password must contain at least one number Password must contain at least one punctuation character And count how many compliant with that policy before we save them. Is there any tool, script or maybe rules in excel to do this instead of doing it manually? Could you please help me?
