  • Do not expose enum in WCF response

    - by Michael Freidgeim
We had a backward compatibility problem in WCF client, when in Service application a new value was added to one of enums. We discussed different ways to avoid this backward compatibility issues, and I found recommendation do not expose enum in wcf response in http://stackoverflow.com/a/788281/52277.It is still required to create new versions of our service interfaces to replace each enum fields with string field, that expects only documented values, and describe, what should be default behavior, if field has an unexpected value.

  • Making headers readable on a multi colored background

    - by aslum
So the client wants a multi-colored background (think 4 colors of paint splats randomly all over the page. Because of this the headers are a bit hard to read. I've currently got them set up as black text with some white drop shadow, but it's still pretty hard to read in IE. How can I make the headers legible regardless of what is behind them (it's a CMS so position on the page is liable to change regularly)?

  • Uninstall libgl? Program using libgl instead of Nvidia's OpenGL libraries

    - by Tek
I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit. I'm trying to get valve's new Linux Steam client running, but having a bit of trouble getting it to detect the right libraries or at least I think that's the issue. I installed the latest 310.19 Nvidia proprietary drivers from geforce.com. Here's the screenshot: I tried uninstalling xserver-xorg-video-nouveau thinking this was the problem but I'm still getting the same error. Any ideas what I can do for Steam to detect the right Nvidia OpenGL libraries?

  • Multiplication for MVP matrices: Any benefits to doing so within the vertex shader?

    - by Nick Wiggill
I'd like to understand under what circumstances (if any) it is worth doing MVP matrix multiplication inside a vertex shader. The vertex shader is run once per vertex, and a single mesh typically contains many vertices. All MVP inputs remain the same for each vertex in the vertex batch relating to a given draw call (model). Surely then, you're always better off keeping the multiplications in the client code, such that you pass in the whole MVP precalculated as a uniform? (avoiding redundant ops between individual vertices)

  • How to configure Firefox to use Oracle Java in XUbuntu 12.04?

    - by Ivan
It was ok in the past but something has broken some months ago and my bank client authentication Java applet stopped working. Now I have to reboot to Windows and use it from there. I have installed (and am using for different purposes) Oracle JDK (manually, from official Oracle distribution files) on XUbuntu but I think Firefox Java plugin still uses OpenJDK. How to set up and make sure Firefox to use a specific Oracle JDK?

  • How can I maximum compress video files?

    - by EmmyS
I received 4 .mov files from a client that they want on their mobile website via SlideShowPro. Each original file was between 200 and 400 mb. I've gotten each one down to about 30 mb using transmageddon as described here, but that's still really big for a mobile connection. Is there any way to shrink them even further? Maybe it's the settings; I used Output Format = MPEG4, Audio = AAC, Video = H264 (which is what is suggested by SlideShowPro.)

  • Why I lose my page rank after 301 redirect?

    - by rajesh.magar
As we all know Google treats sub-domains as completely separate domains so we have to fight for both, to get ranked in search results. One of my client website was like they having example.com and blog.example.com. So in mind to keep all stuff in one place we redirect blog.example.com to example.com/blog/ But in this case we lost our pagerank and are still wondering where we went wrong or it just takes few more time to showoff. So what is the reason behind this?

  • The Power of AJAX and How to Use it

Since its conception in 2005, AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML) has changed the web world as we know it today. It's helped websites evolve into RIAs (rich internet applications) by allowing webpages to make direct requests to a web server without reloading the page. This capability is vital in replicating the rich user experiences achieved in client applications. The purpose of this post is to help newcomers understand the different ways that AJAX can be used to create RIAs.

  • How to reduce MDX code redundancy in SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)

To query an Analysis Services cube, MDX is used as the query language. In most business settings, one would find a set of queries that are common across a number of user query requirements. To cater to this, even with a modest size IT team, there is a good chance that the same queries are developed redundantly either within a SSAS MDX script or repetitively in an ad-hoc manner in client applications. In this tip we would look at how to reuse queries without redeveloping them over and over.

  • Is there a generally accepted maximum number of http requests for a web page load?

    - by MorganTiley
I'm looking into optimizing my web application's client side performance but cannot figure out a good goal for # of http requests for a page. How does YSlow calculate the grade? This doesn't seem to be documented. Also it seems many sites like linkedin.com, amazon.com get an F grade but the page still loads quite fast. How does it fail but still perform well? Gmail get's an A grade and it has 43 unprimed/10 primed requests.

  • How to create a JMS durable subscriber in WebLogic Server?

WebLogic Server Provides a set of examples that are very helpful to get started with Weblogic ServerHere you can check how to install the examples:http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/doc.1111/e14142/prepare.htmAfter you have installed the examples, you can find the example you want to review, in this case TopicReceive, here:wlserver_10.3/samples/server/examples/src/examples/jms/topicTo review details of the specific example, you can open:wlserver_10.3/samples/server/examples/src/examples/jms/topic/instructions.htmlTo create a Durable Subscriber, you can just set the client ID  and invoke createDurableSubscriber instead of calling createSubscriber, i.e.:    tconFactory = (TopicConnectionFactory)       PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ctx.lookup(JMS_FACTORY),                                   TopicConnectionFactory.class);    tcon = tconFactory.createTopicConnection();    //Set Client ID for this Durable Subscriber    tcon.setClientID("GT2");    tsession = tcon.createTopicSession(false, Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);    topic = (Topic)       PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ctx.lookup(topicName),                                   Topic.class);    // Create Durable Subscription    tsubscriber = tsession.createDurableSubscriber(topic, "Test");    tsubscriber.setMessageListener(this);    tcon.start(); Enjoy!   You can read more about this here:http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/e13727/advpubsub.htm#CHDEBABChttp://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/e13727/manage_apps.htm#i1097671    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/apirefs.1111/e13943/WebLogic.Messaging.ISession.CreateDurableSubscriber_overload_2.html

  • Is there a good reason I shouldn't use a java applet for a game?

    - by ryeguy
I want to make a multiplayer browser-based game. The nice thing about using an applet is that I can make the client and the server in the same language (java/closure/scala/etc). I know there's html5 and javascript, but server side javascript isn't as mature as the jvm platform and browser support is still kind of flaky. Applets don't seem to be widely used (except for Runescape), but is there a reason they're unsuitable or is it just because of the bad reputation they developed in their infancy?

  • How can you tell whether to use Composite Pattern or a Tree Structure, or a third implementation?

    - by Aske B.
I have two client types, an "Observer"-type and a "Subject"-type. They're both associated with a hierarchy of groups. The Observer will receive (calendar) data from the groups it is associated with throughout the different hierarchies. This data is calculated by combining data from 'parent' groups of the group trying to collect data (each group can have only one parent). The Subject will be able to create the data (that the Observers will receive) in the groups they're associated with. When data is created in a group, all 'children' of the group will have the data as well, and they will be able to make their own version of a specific area of the data, but still linked to the original data created (in my specific implementation, the original data will contain time-period(s) and headline, while the subgroups specify the rest of the data for the receivers directly linked to their respective groups). However, when the Subject creates data, it has to check if all affected Observers have any data that conflicts with this, which means a huge recursive function, as far as I can understand. So I think this can be summed up to the fact that I need to be able to have a hierarchy that you can go up and down in, and some places be able to treat them as a whole (recursion, basically). Also, I'm not just aiming at a solution that works. I'm hoping to find a solution that is relatively easy to understand (architecture-wise at least) and also flexible enough to be able to easily receive additional functionality in the future. Is there a design pattern, or a good practice to go by, to solve this problem or similar hierarchy problems? EDIT: Here's the design I have: The "Phoenix"-class is named that way because I didn't think of an appropriate name yet. But besides this I need to be able to hide specific activities for specific observers, even though they are attached to them through the groups. A little Off-topic: Personally, I feel that I should be able to chop this problem down to smaller problems, but it escapes me how. I think it's because it involves multiple recursive functionalities that aren't associated with each other and different client types that needs to get information in different ways. I can't really wrap my head around it. If anyone can guide me in a direction of how to become better at encapsulating hierarchy problems, I'd be very glad to receive that as well.

  • How often should multiplayer games communicate with the server?

    - by Bane
I once heard that Runescape "ticks" every 0.3s, and that seemed like a very long period of time, although Runescape is kind of a slow game. I'm building a more dynamic top-down shooter game, and I'm wandering, how often should I communicate with the server? ASAP, or every 0.1s? How do shooter games usually do it? Both the server and the client are written in Javascript, node.js and socket.io are being used.
