Credentials Not Passed From SharePoint WebPart to WCF Service

I have spent several hours trying to resolve this problem, so I wanted to share my findings in case someone else might have the same problem. I had a web part which was calling out to a WCF service on another server to get some data. The code I had was essentially using System.ServiceModel; using System.ServiceModel.Channels; ... var binding = new CustomBinding( new HttpTransportBindingElement { AuthenticationScheme = System.Net.AuthenticationSchemes.Negotiate } ); var endpoint = new EndpointAddress(new Uri("http://someotherserver/someotherservice.svc")); var someOtherService = new SomeOtherServiceClient(binding, endpoint); string result = someOtherService.SomeServiceMethod(); This code would run fine on my local instance of SharePoint 2010 (Windows 7 64-bit). However, when I would deploy it to the testing environment, I would get a yellow screen of death with the following message: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'. I then went through the usual checklist of Windows Authentication problems: Check WCF bindings to make sure authentication is set correctly Check IIS to make sure Windows Authentication is enabled and anonymous authentication was disabled. Check to make sure the SharePoint server trusted the server hosting the WCF service Verify that the account that the IIS application pool is running under has access to the other server I then spend lot of time digging into really obscure IIS, machine.config, and trust settings (as well of lots of time on Google and StackOverflow). Eventually I stumbled upon a blog post by Todd Bleeker describing how to run code under the application pool identity. Wait, what? The code is not already running under application pool identity? Another quick Google search led me to an MSDN page that imply that SharePoint indeed does not run under the app pool credentials by default. Instead SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges is needed to run code under the app pool identity. Using INotifyPropertyChanged in background threads

Following up on a previous blog post where I exemplify databinding to objects, a reader was having some trouble with getting the UI to update. Here’s the rough UI: The idea is, when pressing Start, a background worker process starts ticking at the specified interval, then proceeds to increment the databound Elapsed value. The problem is that event propagation is limeted to current thread, meaning, you fire an event in one thread, then other threads of the same application will not catch it. The Code behind So, somewhere in my ViewModel, I have a corresponding bethod Start that initiates a background worker, for example: public void Start( ) { BackgroundWorker backgroundWorker = new BackgroundWorker( ); backgroundWorker.DoWork += IncrementTimerValue; backgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync( ); } protected void IncrementTimerValue( object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e ) { do { if( this.ElapsedMs == 100 ) this.ElapsedMs = 0; else this.ElapsedMs++; }while( true ); } Assuming that there is a property: public int ElapsedMs { get { return _elapsedMs; } set { if( _elapsedMs == value ) return; _elapsedMs = value; NotifyThatPropertyChanged( "ElapsedMs" ); } } The above code will not work. If you step into this code in debug, you will find that INotifyPropertyChanged is called, but it does so in a different thread, and thus the UI never catches it, and does not update. One solution Knowing that the background thread updates the ElapsedMs member gives me a chance to activate BackgroundWorker class’ progress reporting mechanism to simply alert the main thread that something has happened, and that it is probably a good idea to refresh the ElapsedMs binding. public void Start( ) { BackgroundWorker backgroundWorker = new BackgroundWorker( ); backgroundWorker.DoWork += IncrementTimerValue; // Listen for progress report events backgroundWorker.WorkerReportsProgress = true; // Tell the UI that ElapsedMs needs to update backgroundWorker.RunWorkerCompleted += ( sender, e ) => { NotifyThatPropertyChanged( "ElapsedMs" ) }; backgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync( ); } protected void IncrementTimerValue( object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e ) { do { if( this.ElapsedMs == 100 ) this.ElapsedMs = 0; else this.ElapsedMs++; // report any progress ( sender as BackgroundWorker ).ReportProgress( 0 ); }while( true ); } What happens above now is that I’ve used the BackgroundWorker cross thread mechanism to alert me of when it is ok for the UI to update it’s ElapsedMs field. Because the property itself is being updated in a different thread, I’m removing the NotifyThatPropertyChanged call from it’s Set method, and moving that responsability to the anonymous method that I created in the Start method. This is one way of solving the issue of having a background thread update your UI. I would be happy to hear of other cross-threading mechanisms for working in a MCP/MVC/MVVM pattern.

Network outside internal not reaching TMG Forefront 2010 (Hyper-V environment)

Below is my environment: I have 1 physical machine running Windows 2008 R2, with the Hyper-V role. This machine has 3 physical NICs: One for Internet One for Internal Network One for Wireless Network All 3 have their respective Virtual Networks in Hyper-V, and I have an extra Private virutal machine network for a DMZ Network. In one of the virtual machines, I have TMG Forefront 2010 SP1 installed, with all 4 networks available to it. If a ping www.google.com or 10.50.75.21 from the Forefront VM, I get answer backs without a problem. If I try to ping a machine at the Perimiter network or the Wireless network, it doesn't get routed back to Forefront, and it's the default gateway on all Networks. How Mature is Your Database Change Management Process?

As your team of developers and DBAs are working on the changes to the database to support your business-critical applications, how do these updates wend their way through from dev environments, possibly to QA, hopefully through pre-production and eventually to production in a controlled, reliable and repeatable way? In this article, I describe a model we use to try and understand the different stages that customers go through as their database change management processes mature, from the very basic and manual, through to advanced continuous delivery practices. I also provide a simple chart that will help you determine “How mature is our database change management process?” This process of managing changes to the database – which all of us who have worked in application/database development have had to deal with in one form or another – is sometimes known as Database Change Management (even if we’ve never used the term ourselves). And it’s a difficult process, often painfully so. Some developers take the approach of “I’ve no idea how my changes get live – I just write the stored procedures and add columns to the tables. It’s someone else’s problem to get this stuff live. I think we’ve got a DBA somewhere who deals with it – I don’t know, I’ve never met him/her”. I know I used to work that way. I worked that way because I assumed that making the updates to production was a trivial task – how hard can it be? Pause the application for half an hour in the middle of the night, copy over the changes to the app and the database, and switch it back on again? Voila! But somehow it never seemed that easy. And it certainly was never that easy for database changes. Why? Because you can’t just overwrite the old database with the new version. Databases have a state – more specifically 4Tb of critical data built up over the last 12 years of running your business, and if your quick hotfix happened to accidentally delete that 4Tb of data, then you’re “Looking for a new role” pretty quickly after the failed release. There are a lot of other reasons why a managed database change management process is important for organisations, besides job security, not least: Frequency of releases. Many business managers are feeling the pressure to get functionality out to their users sooner, quicker and more reliably. The new book (which I highly recommend) Lean Enterprise by Jez Humble, Barry O’Reilly and Joanne Molesky provides a great discussion on how many enterprises are having to move towards a leaner, more frequent release cycle to maintain their competitive advantage. It’s no longer acceptable to release once per year, leaving your customers waiting all year for changes they desperately need (and expect) Auditing and compliance. SOX, HIPAA and other compliance frameworks have demanded that companies implement proper processes for managing changes to their databases, whether managing schema changes, making sure that the data itself is being looked after correctly or other mechanisms that provide an audit trail of changes. We’ve found, at Red Gate that we have a very wide range of customers using every possible form of database change management imaginable. Everything from “Nothing – I just fix the schema on production from my laptop when things go wrong, and write it down in my notebook” to “A full Continuous Delivery process – any change made by a dev gets checked in and recorded, fully tested (including performance tests) before a (tested) release is made available to our Release Management system, ready for live deployment!”. And everything in between of course. Because of the vast number of customers using so many different approaches we found ourselves struggling to keep on top of what everyone was doing – struggling to identify patterns in customers’ behavior. This is useful for us, because we want to try and fit the products we have to different needs – different products are relevant to different customers and we waste everyone’s time (most notably, our customers’) if we’re suggesting products that aren’t appropriate for them. If someone visited a sports store, looking to embark on a new fitness program, and the store assistant suggested the latest $10,000 multi-gym, complete with multiple weights mechanisms, dumb-bells, pull-up bars and so on, then he’s likely to lose that customer. All he needed was a pair of running shoes! To solve this issue – in an attempt to simplify how we understand our customers and our offerings – we built a model. This is a an attempt at trying to classify our customers in to some sort of model or “Customer Maturity Framework” as we rather grandly term it, which somehow simplifies our understanding of what our customers are doing. The great statistician, George Box (amongst other things, the “Box” in the Box-Jenkins time series model) gave us the famous quote: “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful” We’ve taken this quote to heart – we know it’s a gross over-simplification of the real world of how users work with complex legacy and new database developments. Almost nobody precisely fits in to one of our categories. But we hope it’s useful and interesting. There are actually a number of similar models that exist for more general application delivery. We’ve found these from ThoughtWorks/Forrester, from InfoQ and others, and initially we tried just taking these models and replacing the word “application” for “database”. However, we hit a problem. From talking to our customers we know that users are far less further down the road of mature database change management than they are for application development. As a simple example, no application developer, who wants to keep his/her job would develop an application for an organisation without source controlling that code. Sure, he/she might not be using an advanced Gitflow branching methodology but they’ll certainly be making sure their code gets managed in a repo somewhere with all the benefits of history, auditing and so on. But this certainly isn’t the case (yet) for the database – a very large segment of the people we speak to have no source control set up for their databases whatsoever, even at the most basic level (for example, keeping change scripts in a source control system somewhere). By the way, if this is you, Red Gate has a great whitepaper here, on the barriers people face getting a source control process implemented at their organisations. This difference in maturity is the same as you move in to areas such as continuous integration (common amongst app developers, relatively rare for database developers) and automated release management (growing amongst app developers, very rare for the database). So, when we created the model we started from scratch and biased the levels of maturity towards what we actually see amongst our customers. But, what are these stages? And what level are you? The table below describes our definitions for four levels of maturity – Baseline, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. As I say, this is a model – you won’t fit any of these categories perfectly, but hopefully one will ring true more than others. Sometimes use a product like SQL Compare or similar to do this Any tests that we might have are run manually Level D2 – Beginner Have some ad-hoc DB version control such as manually adding upgrade scripts to a version control system Attempt is made to keep production in sync with development environments There is some documentation and planning of manual deployments Some basic automated DB testing in process Level D3 – Intermediate The database is fully version-controlled with a product like Red Gate SQL Source Control or SSDT Database environments are managed Production environment schema is reproducible from the source control system There are some automated tests Have looked at using migration scripts for difficult database refactoring cases Level D4 – Advanced Using continuous integration for database changes Build, testing and deployment of DB changes carried out through a proper database release process Fully automated tests Production system is monitored for fast feedback to developers Does this model reflect your team at all? Need help configurating my Tomcat server

I just reinstalled my entire server, and now I can't seem to get my JSP-based website to work on Tomcat anymore. I use the same server.xml file, which worked perfectly before the reinstallation, but no longer. Obtaining positional information in the IEnumerable Select extension method

This blog entry is intended to provide a narrow and brief look into a way to use the Select extension method that I had until recently overlooked. Every developer who is using IEnumerable extension methods to work with data has been exposed to the Select extension method, because it is a pretty critical piece of almost every query over a collection of objects. The method is defined on type IEnumerable and takes as its argument a function that accepts an item from the collection and returns an object which will be an item within the returned collection. This allows you to perform transformations on the source collection. A somewhat contrived example would be the following code that transforms a collection of strings into a collection of anonymous objects: 1: var media = new[] {"book", "cd", "tape"}; 2: var transformed = media.Select( item => 3: { 4: Media = item 5: } ); This code transforms the array of strings into a collection of objects which each have a string property called Media. If every developer using the LINQ extension methods already knows this, why am I blogging about it? I’m blogging about it because the method has another overload that I hadn’t seen before I needed it a few weeks back and I thought I would share a little about it with whoever happens upon my blog. In the other overload, the function defined in the first overload as: 1: Func<TSource, TResult> is instead defined as: 1: Func<TSource, int, TResult> The additional parameter is an integer representing the current element’s position in the enumerable sequence. I used this information in what I thought was a pretty cool way to compare collections and I’ll probably blog about that sometime in the near future, but for now we’ll continue with the contrived example I’ve already started to keep things simple and show how this works. The following code sample shows how the positional information could be used in an alternating color scenario. JS closures - Passing a function to a child, how should the shared object be accessed

I have a design and am wondering what the appropriate way to access variables is. I'll demonstrate with this example since I can't seem to describe it better than the title. Term is an object representing a bunch of time data (a repeating duration of time defined by a bunch of attributes) Term has some print functionality but does not implement the print functions itself, rather they are passed in as anonymous functions by the parent. This would be similar to how shaders can be passed to a renderer rather than defined by the renderer. A container (let's call it Box) has a Schedule object that can understand and use Term objects. Box creates Term objects and passes them to Schedule as required. Box also defines the print functions stored in Term. A print function usually takes an argument and uses it to return a string based on that argument and Term's internal data. Sometime the print function could also use data stored in Schedule, though. I'm calling this data shared. So, the question is, what is the best way to access this shared data. I have a lot of options since JS has closures and I'm not familiar enough to know if I should be using them or avoiding them in this case. Options: Create a local "reference" (term used lightly) to the shared data (data is not a primitive) when defining the print function by accessing the shared data through Schedule from Box. Example: var schedule = function(){ var sched = Schedule(); var t1 = Term( function(x){ // Term.print() return (x + sched.data).format(); }); }; Bind it to Term explicitly. (Pass it in Term's constructor or something). Or bind it in Sched after Box passes it. And then access it as an attribute of Term. Pass it in at the same time x is passed to the print function, (from sched). This is the most familiar way for my but it doesn't feel right given JS's closure ability. Do something weird like bind some context and arguments to print. I'm hoping the correct answer isn't purely subjective. If it is, then I guess the answer is just "do whatever works". But I feel like there are some significant differences between the approaches that could have a large impact when stretched beyond my small example.

Should I go along with my choice of web hosting company or still search?

Hi all, I have been searching for a good website hosting company that can offer me all the services that I need for hosting my PHP & MySQL based website. Now this is a community based website and users will be able to upload pictures, etc. The hosting company that I have in mind, currently lets me do everything... let me use mail(), supports CRON jobs, etc. Of course they are charging about $6/month. Now the only problem with this company is that they have a limit of 50,000 files that can exist within the hosting account at any time. This kind of contradicts their frontpage ad of "UNLIMITED SPACE" on their website. Apart from this, I know of no other reason why I should not go with this hosting company. But my issue is that 50,000 file limit is what I cannot live with, once the users increase in significant number and the files they upload, exceed 50,000 in number. Now since this is a dynamic website and also includes sensitive issues like payments, etc. I am not sure if I should go ahead with this company as I am just starting out and then later switch over to a better hosting company which does not limit me with 50,000 files. If I need to switch over once I host with this company, I will need to take backups of all the files located in my account (jpg, zip, etc.), then upload them to the new host. I am not aware of any tools that can help me in this process. Can you please mention if you know any? I can go ahead with the other companies right now, but their cost is double/triple of the current price and they all sport less features than my current choice. If I pay more, then they are ready to accommodate my higher demands. Unfortunately, the company that I am willing to go with now, does NOT have any other higher/better plans that I can switch to. So that's the really really bad part. So my question(s): Since I am starting out with my website and since the scope of users initially is going to be less/small, should I go ahead with the current choice and then once the demand increases, switch over to a better provider? If yes, how can I transfer my database, especially the jpg files, etc. to the new provider? I don't even know the tools required to backup and restore to another host. (I don't like this idea but still..) Should I go ahead and pay more right now and go with better providers (without knowing if the website is going to do really that well) just for saving myself the trouble of having to take a backup of the 50,000 files and upload to a new host from an old host and just start paying double/triple the price without even knowing if I would receive back the returns as I expected? Backup and Restore in such a bulky numbers is something that I have never done before and hence I am stuck here trying to decide what to do. The price per month is also a considerable factor in my decision. All these web hosting companies say one common thing: It is customers responsibility to backup and restore data and they are not liable for any loss. So no matter what hosting company that I would like to go with, they ask me to take backup via FTP so that I can restore them whenever I want (& it seems to be safer to have the files locally with me). Some are providing tools for backup and some are not and I am not sure how much their backup tools can be trusted considering the disclaimers they have. I have never backed-up and restored 50,000 files from one web host to another, so please, all you experienced people out there, leave your comments and let me know your suggestions so that I can decide. I have spent 2 days fighting with myself trying to decide what to do and finally concluded that this is a double-edged sword and I can't arrive at a satisfactory final decision without involving others suggestions. I believe that someone must be out there who may have had such troublesome decision to make. So all your suggestions to help me make my decision are appreciated. Thank you all.

Is it unusual for a small company (15 developers) not to use managed source/version control?

It's not really a technical question, but there are several other questions here about source control and best practice. The company I work for (which will remain anonymous) uses a network share to host its source code and released code. It's the responsibility of the developer or manager to manually move source code to the correct folder depending on whether it's been released and what version it is and stuff. We have various spreadsheets dotted around where we record file names and versions and what's changed, and some teams also put details of different versions at the top of each file. Each team (2-3 teams) seems to do this differently within the company. As you can imagine, it's an organised mess - organised, because the "right people" know where their stuff is, but a mess because it's all different and it relies on people remembering what to do at any one time. One good thing is that everything is backed up on a nightly basis and kept indefinitely, so if mistakes are made, snapshots can be recovered. I've been trying to push for some kind of managed source control for a while, but I can't seem to get enough support for it within the company. My main arguments are: We're currently vulnerable; at any point someone could forget to do one of the many release actions we have to do, which could mean whole versions are not stored correctly. It could take hours or even days to piece a version back together if necessary We're developing new features along with bug fixes, and often have to delay the release of one or the other because some work has not been completed yet. We also have to force customers to take versions that include new features even if they just want a bug fix, because there's only really one version we're all working on We're experiencing problems with Visual Studio because multiple developers are using the same projects at the same time (not the same files, but it's still causing problems) There are only 15 developers, but we all do stuff differently; wouldn't it be better to have a standard company-wide approach we all have to follow? My questions are: Is it normal for a group of this size not to have source control? I have so far been given only vague reasons for not having source control - what reasons would you suggest could be valid for not implementing source control, given the information above? Are there any more reasons for source control that I could add to my arsenal? I'm asking mainly to get a feel for why I have had so much resistance, so please answer honestly. IE8 losing session cookies in popup windows.

We have an ASP.NET application that uses Forms Auth. When users log in, a session ID cookie and a Forms Auth ticket (stored as a cookie) are generated. These are session cookies, not permanent cookies. It is intentional and desirable that when the browser closes, the user is effectively logged out. Once a user logs in, a new window is popped up using window.open('location here');. The page that is opened is effectively the workspace the user works in throughout the rest of their session. From this page, other pop-ups are also used. Lately, we've had a number of customers (all using latest versions of IE8) complaining that the when they log in, the initial pop-up takes them back to the log in screen rather than their homepage. Alternately, users can sometimes log in, get to the homepage (which again, is in a new pop up window), and it all seems fine, until any additional pop-ups are created, where it starts redirecting them to the log in screen again. In attempting to troubleshoot the issue, I've used good old Fiddler. When the problem starts manifesting, I've noticed that the browser is not sending up the ASP.NET session ID session cookie OR the Forms Auth ticket session cookie, even though the response to the log in POST clearly pushes down those cookies. What's more strange is if I CTRL+N to open a new window from the popped-up window that is missing the session cookies, then manually type in the URL to the home page, those cookies magically appear again. However, subsequent window.open(); calls will continue to be broken, not sending the session cookies and taking the user to the log in screen. It's important to note that sometimes, for seemingly no good reason, those same users can suddenly log in and work normally for a while, then it goes back to broken. Now, I've ensured that there are no browser add-ons, plug-ins, toolbars, etc. are running. I've added our site as a trusted site and dropped the security settings to Low, I've modified the Cookie Privacy policy to "accept all" and even disabled automatic policy settings, manually forcing it to accept everything and include session cookies. Nothing appears to affect it. Also note the web application resides on a single server. There is no load balancing, web gardens, server farms, clusters, etc. The server does reside behind an ISA server, but other than that it's pretty straight forward. I've been searching around for days and haven't found anything actionable. Heck, sometimes I can't even reproduce it reliably. I have found a few references to people having this same problem, but they seem to be referencing an issue that was allegedly fixed in a beta or RC release (example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/179260/ie8-loses-cookies-when-opening-a-new-window-after-a-redirect). These are release versions of IE, with up-to-date patches. I'm aware that I can try to set permanent cookies instead of session cookies. However, this has drastic security implications for our application. Update It seems that the problem automagically goes away when the user is added as a Local Administrator on the machine. Only time will tell if this change permanently (and positively) affects this problem. Time to bust out ProcMon and see if there is a resource access problem.

Rails 2.3.5 and oauth-plugin

I started a rails application from scratch, using Rails 2.3.5, and installed oauth-plugin. The installation was done by running script/plugin install git://github.com/pelle/oauth-plugin.git. Database - Designing an "Events" Table

After reading the tips from this great Nettuts+ article I've come up with a table schema that would separate highly volatile data from other tables subjected to heavy reads and at the same time lower the number of tables needed in the whole database schema, however I'm not sure if this is a good idea since it doesn't follow the rules of normalization and I would like to hear your advice, here is the general idea: I've four types of users modeled in a Class Table Inheritance structure, in the main "user" table I store data common to all the users (id, username, password, several flags, ...) along with some TIMESTAMP fields (date_created, date_updated, date_activated, date_lastLogin, ...). To quote the tip #16 from the Nettuts+ article mentioned above: Example 2: You have a “last_login” field in your table. It updates every time a user logs in to the website. But every update on a table causes the query cache for that table to be flushed. You can put that field into another table to keep updates to your users table to a minimum. Now it gets even trickier, I need to keep track of some user statistics like how many unique times a user profile was seen how many unique times a ad from a specific type of user was clicked how many unique times a post from a specific type of user was seen and so on... One thing that I've come to like in this design is that I can keep track of all the user logins instead of just the last one, and thus generate some interesting metrics with that data. Due to the nature of the events table I also thought of making some optimizations, such as: #9: Since there is only a finite number of tables and a finite (and predetermined) number of events, the TABLE and EVENTS columns could be setup as ENUMs instead of VARCHARs to save some space. #14: Store IPs as UNSIGNED INT with INET_ATON() instead of VARCHARs. Store DATEs as TIMESTAMPs instead of DATETIMEs. Use the ARCHIVE (or the CSV?) engine instead of InnoDB / MyISAM. Overall, each event would only consume 14 bytes which is okay for my traffic I guess. Pros: Ability to store more detailed data (such as logins). No need to design (and code for) almost a dozen additional tables (dates and statistics). Reduces a few columns per table and keeps volatile data separated. Cons: Non-relational (still not as bad as EAV): SELECT * FROM events WHERE id = 2 AND table = 'user' ORDER BY date DESC(); 6 bytes overhead per event (ID, TABLE and EVENT). I'm more inclined to go with this approach since the pros seem to far outweigh the cons, but I'm still a little bit reluctant.. Am I missing something? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

How to implement an offline reader writer lock

Some context for the question All objects in this question are persistent. All requests will be from a Silverlight client talking to an app server via a binary protocol (Hessian) and not WCF. Each user will have a session key (not an ASP.NET session) which will be a string, integer, or GUID (undecided so far). Some objects might take a long time to edit (30 or more minutes) so we have decided to use pessimistic offline locking. Pessimistic because having to reconcile conflicts would be far too annoying for users, offline because the client is not permanently connected to the server. Rather than storing session/object locking information in the object itself I have decided that any aggregate root that may have its instances locked should implement an interface ILockable public interface ILockable { Guid LockID { get; } } This LockID will be the identity of a "Lock" object which holds the information of which session is locking it. Now, if this were simple pessimistic locking I'd be able to achieve this very simply (using an incrementing version number on Lock to identify update conflicts), but what I actually need is ReaderWriter pessimistic offline locking. The reason is that some parts of the application will perform actions that read these complex structures. These include things like Reading a single structure to clone it. Reading multiple structures in order to create a binary file to "publish" the data to an external source. Read locks will be held for a very short period of time, typically less than a second, although in some circumstances they could be held for about 5 seconds at a guess. Write locks will mostly be held for a long time as they are mostly held by humans. There is a high probability of two users trying to edit the same aggregate at the same time, and a high probability of many users needing to temporarily read-lock at the same time too. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might implement this. One additional point to make is that if I want to place a write lock and there are some read locks, I would like to "queue" the write lock so that no new read locks are placed. If the read locks are removed withing X seconds then the write lock is obtained, if not then the write lock backs off; no new read-locks would be placed while a write lock is queued. So far I have this idea The Lock object will have a version number (int) so I can detect multi-update conflicts, reload, try again. It will have a string[] for read locks A string to hold the session ID that has a write lock A string to hold the queued write lock Possibly a recursion counter to allow the same session to lock multiple times (for both read and write locks), but not sure about this yet. Rules: Can't place a read lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. Can't place a write lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. If there are no locks at all then a write lock may be placed. If there are read locks then a write lock will be queued instead of a full write lock placed. (If after X time the read locks are not gone the lock backs off, otherwise it is upgraded). Can't queue a write lock for a session that has a read lock. Can anyone see any problems? Suggest alternatives? Anything? I'd appreciate feedback before deciding on what approach to take.

I've been working on a complex "user feed" type of functionality for a while now, and after experimenting with various union plugins, hacking named scopes, and brute force, have arrived at a solution I'm happy with. S.O. has been hugely helpful for me, so I thought I'd post it here in hopes that it might help others and also to get feedback -- it's very possible that I worked on this so long that I walked down an unnecessarily complicated road. For the sake of my example, I'll use users, groups, and articles. A user can follow other users to get a feed of their articles. They can also join groups and get a feed of articles that have been added to those groups. What I needed was a combined, pageable feed of distinct articles from a user's contacts and groups. Rendering a view to a string in MVC, then redirecting -- workarounds?

Hi -- I can't render a view to a string and then redirect, despite this answer from Feb (after version 1.0, I think) that claims it's possible. I thought I was doing something wrong, and then I read this answer from Haack in July that claims it's not possible. If somebody has it working and can help me get it working, that's great (and I'll post code, errors). However, I'm now at the point of needing workarounds. There are a few, but nothing ideal. Has anybody solved this, or have any comments on my ideas? This is to render email. While I can surely send the email outside of the web request (store info in a db and get it later), there are many types of emails and I don't want to store the template data (user object, a few other LINQ objects) in a db to let it get rendered later. I could create a simpler, serializable POCO and save that in the db, but why? ... I just want rendered text! I can create a new RedirectToAction object that checks if the headers have been sent (can't figure out how to do this -- try/catch?) and, if so, builds out a simple page with a meta redirect, a javascript redirect, and also a "click here" link. Within my controller, I can remember if I've rendered an email and, if so, manually do #2 by displaying a view. I can manually send the redirect headers before any potential email rendering. Then, rather than using the MVC infrastructure to redirecttoaction, I just call result.end. This seems easiest, but really messy. Anything else? EDIT: I've tried Dan's code (very similar to the code from Jan/Feb that I've already tried) and I'm still getting the same error. The only substantial difference I can see is that his example uses a view while I use a partial view. I'll try testing this later with a view.
