How do I switch out Views in a Cocoa application?

So I'm beginning to learn how to use Cocoa. I think I've pretty much got it but I'm hung up on creating and switching views. I'm rewriting a game I made a little bit ago for practice. All I want is one window (preferably not resizable) and I want to be able to switch out views for different screens in the game. First, I have the main menu (Start Game, High Scores, Exit). Then I need a window for each screen (Gameplay screen, Highscore screen). What I'm getting confused with is how to design this. I looked up NSViewController thinking it manages views but it doesn't. It only manages one view by loading it really. I don't understand why I'd need to use NSViewController then. Couldn't I just have a window class that contains multiple subclasses of NSView and load them like that? I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the ViewController. Does my Window Class really need to subclass NSWindowController? I was trying to follow the example of Apple's ViewController example and it has a window controller class that's a subclass of NSWindowController. I don't see what the purpose was of subclassing that. All NSWindowController seems to add is - initWithPath:(NSString *)newPath but I fail to see the use in that either when I can just edit the plist file to open the window on start up. Apple's example also has an NSView variable and an NSViewController variable. Don't you only need one variable to store the current view? Thanks in advance guys, I'm really confused as to how this works.

Why doesn't the SplitView iPhone template have a nib file for the RootView?

I'm diving into iPad development and am learning a lot quickly, but everywhere I look, I have questions. After creating a new SplitView app in Xcode using the template, it generates the AppDelegate class, RootViewController class, and DetailViewController class. Along with that, it creates a .xib files for MainWinow.xib and DetailView.xib. How do these five files work together? Why is there a nib file for the DetailView, but not the RootView? When I double click on the MainWindow.xib file, Interface Builder launches without a "View" window, why? Below is the code for didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method inside the AppDelegate class. Why are we adding the splitViewController as a subview? Launch a new page in Zend/php on button click

MapView EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS

I'm having some 'issues' with my application... well, it crashes in an UIViewController that is presented modally, there the user enters information through UITextFields and his location is tracked by a MapView. Lets call this view controller "MapViewController" When the user submits the form, I call a different ViewController - modally again - that processes this info and a third one answers accordingly, then go back to a MenuVC using unwinding segues, which then calls MapViewController and so on. This sequence is repeated many times, but it always crashes in MapViewController. Looking at the crash log, I think that the MapView can be the problem of this or some element in the UI (because of the UIKit framework). I tried to use NSZombie in order to track a memory issue but it doesn't give me a clue about whats happening. writing a meta refresh method for rails

I want a method in app/controllers/application.rb that can prepend/append text to whatever template gets rendered. Of course I can't call render twice w/o getting a double render error, so is this possible? I want to redirect after a delay using a meta refresh. (RoR) How to: link multiple apps, multiple URLs, one database

Hello. I am currently developing a site using Ruby on Rails. I am still a beginner who just started around a month ago. I use InstantRails on Windows 7. Here's my question. Let's say app A is functional using MYSQL database A_development. The files such as views and controller are under folder 'A'. I now know how to, say for example, link www.app.com to this app by opening port 80 and changing some lines in the mySQL config. In this app, you can register your username, login, and post some messages. I now want to create some pretty identical apps say B and C. The only thing different will be the posts that shows, and the views. You can still log in with the same username, and everything is saved in the same database. I now want the URLs to look something like A.app.com leading to app A, B.app.com leading to app B, etc. Can that be achieved? How? I've been googling for a few days already and I'm still lost. As I'm new to this forum, I'm not quite sure what info do you guys need. Please list and I'll provide them asap. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

Saving tags into a database table in CakePHP

I have the following setup for my CakePHP app: Posts id title content Topics id title Topic_Posts id topic_id post_id So basically I have a table of Topics (tags) that are all unique and have an id. And then they can be attached to post using the Topic_Posts join table. When a user creates a new post they will fill in the topics by typing them in to a textarea separated by a comma which will then save these into the Topics table if they do not already exist and then save the references into the Topic_posts table. I have the models set up like so: Post model: class Post extends AppModel { public $name = 'Post'; public $hasAndBelongsToMany = array( 'Topic' => array('with' => 'TopicPost') ); } Topic model: class Topic extends AppModel { public $hasMany = array( 'TopicPost' ); } TopicPost model: class TopicPost extends AppModel { public $belongsTo = array( 'Topic', 'Post' ); } And for the New post method I have this so far: public function add() { if ($this->request->is('post')) { //$this->Post->create(); if ($this->Post->saveAll($this->request->data)) { // Redirect the user to the newly created post (pass the slug for performance) $this->redirect(array('controller'=>'posts','action'=>'view','id'=>$this->Post->id)); } else { $this->Session->setFlash('Server broke!'); } } } As you can see I have used saveAll but how do I go about dealing with the Topic data?

App crashes frequently at time when UIActionSheet would be presented

I am getting the following error intermittently when a call is made to display an action sheet. Assertion failure in -[UIActionSheet showInView:] Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid parameter not satisfying: view != nil' Now in this case I've not changed screens. The UIActionSheet is presented when a local notification is fired and I have an observer call a local method on this view as such: I have the property marked as strong. When the action sheet is dismissed I also set it to nil. I am using a story board for the UI. It's fairly repeatable to crash it, perhaps less than 5 tries. (Thankfully I have that going for me). Any suggestions what to try next? I'm really pulling my hair out on this one. Most of the issues I've seen on this topic are pointing to the crash occurring once the selection is made. In my case it's at presentation and intermittently. Also for what it's worth, this particular view is several stacks deep in an embedded navigation controller. Hometableviewdetail selectviewController in question. This same issue occurs so far in testing on iOS 5.1 and iOS 6. Xcode: how to know a header file is actually imported?

To be specific, I am using RestKit framework. I want to use a framework class category called RKObjectManager+RKTableController in my view controller mainTVC. Here is my #import section in mainTVC.m: // framework headers, which should be enough #import <RestKit/RestKit.h> #import <RestKit/UI.h> // my project headers, not relating to framework #import "MainTVC.h" #import "Photo.h" // Do this to guarantee import does happen. But still got error, see below #import <RestKit/RKObjectManager+RKTableController.h> However, Xcode issue an error: No known class method for selector 'fetchRequest:groupedBy:inContext:' For reference, this method is a class method declared only in category header RKObjectManager+RKTableController.h, but not in 'RKObjectManager.h`. Also, I added -ObjC and -all_load to "other linker flags" in build settings, if that's relevant. I suspect the error is caused by the fact that category header is not actually imported somehow. How can I verify that? Or the error is caused by other reasons that I am not aware of. What am I doing wrong?

XCode enum woes

Hi gang, I thought I had this sorted, but I am still missing something. Very simply, I have a Settings class that hold a DAO (sitting on a plist). I want to have a couple of enums for the settings for convenience and readability, such as GamePlayType and DifficultyLevel. Right now I am defining them in the Settings.h file above the @interface line as such: typedef enum { EASY, NORMAL, HARD } DifficultyLevel; and typedef enum { SET_NUMBER_OF_MOVES, TO_COMPLETION } GamePlayType; If I access them from within the Settings class like: - (int)gridSizeForLOD { switch ([self difficultyLevel]) { case EASY: return GRID_SIZE_EASY; case NORMAL: return GRID_SIZE_NORMAL; case HARD: return GRID_SIZE_HARD; default: return GRID_SIZE_NORMAL; } } everything is fine. But, if I try to access them outside of the Settings class, let's say in my main view controller class, like this: if (([settings gameType] == SET_NUMBER_OF_MOVES) && (numMoves == [settings numMovesForLOD])) { [self showLoseScreen]; } I get errors (like EXC_BAD_ACCESS) or the condition always fails. Am I doing something incorrectly? Also, I should point out that I have this code for the call to gameType (which lives in the Settings class): - (GamePlayType)gameType { return [dao gameType]; } and the DAO implements gameType like this: - (int)gameType { return (settingsContent != nil) ? [[settingsContent objectForKey:@"Game Type"] intValue] : 0; } I know I have the DAO returning an int instead of a GamePlayType, but A) the problem I am describing arose there when I tried to use the "proper" data type, and B) I did not think it would matter since the enum is just a bunch of named ints, right? Any help, greatly appreciated. I really want to understand this thoroughly, and something is eluding me... Cheers, Chris

[Rails] checkbox to update attribute

[Updated a bit] I have a Task model that has a :completed boolean attribute. If I click on it I want it to execute the 'finish' method. The main problem is that I am displays a series of checkboxes in a list and subsequent checkboxes after the first one are ignored. The method is never called for the given task/checkbox combo. Constructing a WeakReference<T> throws COMException

The following code: IDisposable d = ... new WeakReference<IDisposable>(d); Has started throwing the following exception on SOME machines. What could cause this? System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Unspecified error (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004005 (E_FAIL)) EDIT: the machines that experience the error are running Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2012 and desktop machines running windows 7 work fine. (this is true, but I now think a different issue is the relevant difference... see below). EDIT: as an additional note, this occurred right after updating our codebase to Entity Framework 6.1.1.-beta1. In the above code, The IDisposable is a class which wraps an EF DbContext. EDIT: why the votes to close? EDIT: the stack trace of the failure ends at the WeakReference<T> constructor called in the above code: at System.WeakReference`1..ctor(T target, Boolean trackResurrection) // from here on down it's code we wrote/simple LINQ. None of this code has changed recently; // we just upgraded to EF6 and saw this failure start happening at Core.Data.EntityFrameworkDataContext.RegisterDependentDisposable(IDisposable child) at Core.Data.ServiceFactory.GetConstructorParameter[TService](Type parameterType) at System.Linq.Enumerable.WhereSelectListIterator`2.MoveNext() at System.Linq.Buffer`1..ctor(IEnumerable`1 source) at System.Linq.Enumerable.ToArray[TSource](IEnumerable`1 source) at Core.Data.ServiceFactory.CreateService[TService]() at MVC controller action method EDIT: it turns out that the machines having issues with this were running AppDynamics. Uninstalling that seems to have removed the issue.

Hi, I have a table that contains data for electric motors the format is: DATE(DateTime) | TagName(VarChar(50) | Val(Float) | 2009-11-03 17:44:13.000 | Motor_1 | 123.45 2009-11-04 17:44:13.000 | Motor_1 | 124.45 2009-11-05 17:44:13.000 | Motor_1 | 125.45 2009-11-03 17:44:13.000 | Motor_2 | 223.45 2009-11-04 17:44:13.000 | Motor_2 | 224.45 Data for each motor is inserted daily, so there would be 31 Motor_1s and 31 Motor_2s etc. We do this so we can trend it on our control system displays. I am using views to extract last months max val and last months min val. Same for this months data. Then I join the two and calculate the difference to get the actual run hours for that month. The "Val" is a nonresetable Accumulation from a PLC(Controller). declarative_authorization permissions on roles

Hey all, I'm trying to add authorization to a rather large app that already exists, but I have to obfuscate the details a bit. Here's the background: In our app we have a number or roles that are hierarchical, roughly like this: BasicUser -> SuperUser -> Admin -> SuperAdmin For authorization each User model instance has an attribute 'role' which corresponds to the above. We have a RESTful controller "Users" that is namespaced under Backoffice. So in short it's Backoffice::UsersController. class Backoffice::UsersController < ApplicationController filter_access_to :all #... RESTful actions + some others end So here's the problem: We want users to be able to give permissions for users to edit users but ONLY if they have a 'smaller' role than they currently have. I've created the following in authorization_rules.rb authorization do role :basic_user do has_permission_on :backoffice_users, :to => :index end role :super_user do includes :basic_user has_permission_on :backoffice_users, :to => :edit do if_attribute :role => is_in { %w(basic_user) } end end role :admin do includes :super_user end role :super_admin do includes :admin end end And unfortunately that's as far as I got, the rule doesn't seem to get applied. If I comment the rule out, nobody can edit If I leave the rule in you can edit everybody I've also tried a couple of variations on the if_attribute: if_attribute :role => is { 'basic_user' } if_attribute :role => 'basic_user' and they get the same effect. Does anybody have any suggestions?

MVC3 View For Loop values initialization

So I have a for loop in my View that is supposed to render out the input boxes. Now inside these input boxes I want to put lables that disappear when you click on them. This is all simple. I might need to initialize them somewhere else and I don't realize it but I'm just not sure. I've tried the [DefaultValue("First Name")] route and that doesn't work. Ruby on Rails: How to create associated models on the fly ?

I have the following models: class Product < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :brand belongs_to :model accepts_nested_attributes_for :brand, :model ... end class Brand < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :products has_many :models ... end class Model < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :products belongs_to :brand accepts_nested_attributes_for :brand ... end I have a problem to create a new product. Here is the relevant code in the controller: class ProductsController < ApplicationController ... def create @product = Product.new(params[:product]) if @product.save ... # Here is the error end ... end When user adds a new brand and a new model, params[:product] contains the following: "brand_attributes"=>{"name"=>"my_new_brand"} "model_attributes"=>{"model_no"=>"my_new_model"} and I got the following error: Mysql2::Error: Column 'brand_id' cannot be null: INSERT INTO `models` ... because model has a foreign key brand_id which is not set. I can't set it because the brand (like the model) is created on the fly when the product is created. I don't want to create the brand before the product, because then I the product has errors, I will need to delete the created brand. Then I tried to change params[:product] like this: "brand_attributes"=>{"name"=>"my_new_brand", "model_attributes"=>{"model_no"=>"my_new_model"}} but I end up with this: unknown attribute: model_attributes What would be the proper way to handle this ?

MVC Html.ActionLink with post funtionality?

I'm checking to see if anyone has written an MVC extension for Html.ActionLink that you can pass in Post parameters like such: <% Html.ActionLink("Click me", "Index", "Home", new { MyRouteValue = "123" }, null, new { postParam1 = "a", postParam2 = "b" }); %> That would render the link like normal but having an onClick event that submits an also rendered form with an Action url for the Action, Controller, and Route Values with additional hidden inputs from the Post Parameters like such: <a href="#" onClick="$('#theform').submit(); return false;">Click me</a> <form id="theform" action="/Home/Index/123" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="postParam1" value="a"> <input type="hidden" name="postParam2" value="b"> </form> I'm looking to redirect users to various pages with potentially a lot of data. Not only from page to page, but from email to page also. This would be highly reusable and I think would clean up a lot of code, and would save a bunch of time writing this if its already floating around out there. I hate recreating the wheel when I don't have to. Thanks!

Help with create action in a different show page

Hi, I'm a Rails newbie and want to do something but keep messing something up. I'd love some help. I have a simple app that has three tables. Users, Robots, and Recipients. Robots belong_to users and Recipients belong_to robots. On the robot show page, I want to be able to create recipients for that robot right within the robot show page. I have the following code in the robot show page which lists current recipients: <table> <% @robot.recipients.each do |recipient| %> <tr> <td><b><%=h recipient.chat_screen_name %></b> via <%=h recipient.protocol_name</td> <td><%= link_to 'Edit', edit_recipient_path(recipient) %> </td> <td><%= link_to 'Delete', recipient, :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :method => :delete %></td> </tr> <% end %> </table> What I'd like to do is have an empty field in which the user can add a new recipient, and have tried the following: I added this to the Robots Show view: <% form_for(@robot.recipient) do |f| %> Enter the screen name<br> <%= f.text_field :chat_screen_name %> <p> <%= f.submit 'Update' %> </p> <% end %> and then this to the Robot controller in the show action: @recipient = Recipient.new @recipients = Recipient.all Alas, I'm still getting a NoMethod error that says: "undefined method `recipient' for #" I'm not sure what I'm missing. JSP JPA Form: how to insert value in a path variable

I have the following code snippet in a jsp file: <hr> <form:form commandName="newTicketSale" id="reg" action="transactionResult.htm"> <h3>Buy Movie Tickets:</h3> <form:label path="movieName">Movie Name:</form:label> <form:input path="movieName" /> <form:errors class="invalid" path="movieName" /> <form:label path="ticketPrice">Ticket Price:</form:label> <form:input path="ticketPrice" /> <form:errors class="invalid" path="ticketPrice" /> <input type="submit"> <br><br> </form:form> I am using JPA tags in this jsp. Now, in the commandName "newTicketSale" there is another parameter called userId. In the jsp file itself I need to insert value ${name} in userId, so that in the Controller file when I am doing @Valid @ModelAttribute("newTicketSale") MovieTicket newTicket I can retrieve the value ${name} when I am doing newTicket.getUserId(). I don't know how to do this. Please help! Thanks in advance!

setting the openCV configuration in an openGL project produce several errors

I have a win32 solution which is set for openGL; it works well; but I want to write a function which use functions of openCV; I set the configuration for openCV for both X86 and X64;;I commented the openCV function and just to test the correctness of configuration, I run it; but when I want to run it on X64 I faced with the error below: Error 1 error C2065: 'GWL_HINSTANCE' : undeclared identifier D:\matrix\matrixProjection\src\ControllerMain.cpp 35 1 matrixProjection Error 2 error C2664: 'CreateDialogParamW' : cannot convert parameter 4 from 'BOOL (__cdecl *)(HWND,UINT,WPARAM,LPARAM)' to 'DLGPROC' D:\matrix\matrixProjection\src\DialogWindow.cpp 47 1 matrixProjection Error 2 points to this line of code: HWND DialogWindow::create() { /*-->this line*/ handle = ::CreateDialogParam(instance, MAKEINTRESOURCE(id), parentHandle, Win::dialogProcedure, (LPARAM)controller); return handle; } but on Debug Win32 configure, it runs; I used openGL32 in my project; is there any probability to be the cause? is there any X64 version for openGL? I know that there is something needed in X64 mode which my solution can not handle it; I googled a lot about it but I did not find any solution; How can I solve that?

Kohana Auth Library Deployment

My Kohana app runs perfectly on my local machine. When I deployed my app to a server (and adjust the config files appropriately), I can no longer log into the app. I've traced through the app login routine on both my local version and the server version and they both agree with each other all the way through until you get to the auth.php controller logged_in() routine where suddenly, at line 140 - the is_object($this-user) test - the $user object no longer exists!?!?!? The login() function call that calls the logged_in() function successfully passes the following test, which causes a redirect to the logged_in() function. if(Auth::instance()->login($user, $post['password'])) Yes, the password and hash, etc all work perfectly. Here is the offending code: public function logged_in() { if ( ! is_object($this->user)) { // No user is currently logged in url::redirect('auth/login'); } etc... } As the code is the same between my local installation and the server, I reckon it must be some server setting that is messing with me. FYI: All the rest of the code works because I have a temporary backdoor available that allows me to use the application (view pages of tables, etc) without being logged in. Any ideas?

Are ternary operators not valid for linq-to-sql queries?

I am trying to display a nullable date time in my JSON response. DateAndTimeDisplayString(r.TestRequestRuns.First().end_dt.Value) : string.Empty }); When I run requests.ToArray() I get the following exception: Could not translate expression ' Table(TestRequest) .Where(r => ((r.scheduled_time == null) AndAlso (r.TestRequestRuns.Count > 0))) .Select(r => new <>f__AnonymousType18`4(id = r.id, name = r.name, start = value(QAWebTools.Controllers.TestRequestsController). DateAndTimeDisplayString(r.TestRequestRuns.First().start_dt), end = IIF(r.TestRequestRuns.First().end_dt.HasValue, value(QAWebTools.Controllers.TestRequestsController). DateAndTimeDisplayString(r.TestRequestRuns.First().end_dt.Value), Invoke(value(System.Func`1[System.String])))))' into SQL and could not treat it as a local expression. If I comment out the end = line, everything seems to run correctly, so it doesn't seem to be the use of my local DateAndTimeDisplayString method, so the only thing I can think of is Linq to Sql doesn't like Ternary operators? I think I've used ternary operators before, but I can't remember if I did it in this code base or another code base (that uses EF4 instead of L2S). Is this true, or am I missing some other issue?

Abstracting the interpretation of MVC checkboxes values received by the FormsCollection object

In ASP.NET MVC a checkbox is generated by the HtmlHelper code here: <%= Html.CheckBox("List_" + mailingList.Key, true) %> as this HTML: <input id="List_NEW_PRODUCTS" name="List_NEW_PRODUCTS" type="checkbox" value="true" /> <input name="List_NEW_PRODUCTS" type="hidden" value="false" /> In case you're wondering why is there an extra hidden field? - then read this. Its definitely a solution that makes you first think 'hmmmmm' but then you realize its a pretty elegant one. The problem I have is when I'm trying to parse the data on the backend. Well its not so much of a problem as a concern if anything in future were to change in the framework. If I'm using the built in binding everything is great - its all done for me. But in my case I'm dynamically generating checkboxes with unknown names and no corresponding properties in my model. So i end up having to write code like this : if (forms["List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION"] == "true,false") { } or this: if (forms.GetValues("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION")[0] == "true") { } Both of which i still look at and cringe - especially since theres no guarantee this will always be the return value. I'm wondering if theres a way to access the layer of abstraction used by the model binders - or if I'm stuck with my controller 'knowing' this much about HTTP POST hacks. Yes I'm maybe being a little picky - but perhaps theres a better clever way using the model binders that I can employ to read dynamically created checkbox parameters. In addition i was hoping this this post might help others searcheing for : "true,false". Even though I knew why it does this I just forgot and it took me a little while to realize 'duh'. FYI: I tried another few things, and this is what I found : forms["List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION"] evaluates to "true,false" forms.GetValues("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION")[0] evaluates to "true" (forms.GetValue("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION").RawValue as string[])[0] evaluates to "true" forms.GetValues("List_RETAIL_NOTIFICATION").FirstOrDefault() evaluates to "true"

Java EE 6: JSF vs Servlet + JSP. Should I bother learning JSF?

I am trying to get familiar with Java EE 6 by reading http://java.sun.com/javaee/6/docs/tutorial/doc/gexaf.html. I am a bit confused about the use of JSF. Usually, the way I develop my Web App would be, Servlet would act like a controller and JSP would act like a View in an MVC model. So Does JSF try to replace this structure? Below are the quote from the above tutorial: Servlet are best suited for service-oriented App and control function of presentation-oriented App like dispatching request JSF and Facelet are more appropriated for generating mark-up like XHTML, and generally used for presentation-oriented App Not sure if I understand the above quote too well, they did not explain too well what is service-oriented vs presentation-oriented. A JavaServer Faces application can map HTTP requests to component-specific event handling and manage components as stateful objects on the server. Any knowledgeable Java developer out there can give me a quick overview about JSF, JSP and Servlet? Do I integrate them all, or do I use them separated base on the App? if so then what kind of app use JSF in contrast with Servlet and JSP A JavaServer Faces application can map HTTP requests to component-specific event handling and manage components as stateful objects on the server. Sound like what servlet can do, but not sure about manage components as stateful objects on the server. Not even sure what that mean? Thanks in advance.
