• Shut down windows service based on load

  Hello, I was wondering if there are any free / open source solutions that will start and stop a windows service based on load? I have some pubsub subscriber services that do background work which is not critical. Ideally i would like tot be able to automate things so that these services could start if memory/cpu/disk i/o was under a certain threshold and stop gracefully if that threshold was met. Do you know of any solutions? Thanks JP

  I have several services set up in launchctl and they all start at boot and restart automatically whenever they stop for any reason. That's great so far. But sometimes I want one of the services to quit and not restart for a while. Is there a recommended way to do that apart from removing the service from launchctl (which also stops it immediately, which I don't want to do)?

Googled around and there is a way to disable devices completely: Cdrom: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom\Start (from 1 to 4) Usb: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR (from 3 to 4) but I need to disable them only for particular users.

  PHP, WHM, and several other services are already installed on a CentOS x64 server I am trying to migrate data to. Many of my existing PHP scripts are dependent on PHP's apache_request_headers() function, which the current server's PHP configuration does not support. Apparently, compiling PHP as an Apache module is one solution, but are there other ways to enable this (without uninstalling PHP, reinstalling, etc., and all dependent services), perhaps as easy as modifying php.ini, somehow?

  Hello, CentOS 5.3 After booting up. I am wondering what is the name of the log file that contains if all services where successfully loaded or not? For example when computer boots you get a list of start services and they can be OK or FAILED. Is there a log file where this information is kept? • windows xp mode for windows 7 - save text input language settings

  When I change the 'default language' in 'text services and input languages' in windows xp mode from EN-US to DE-DE the settings are reverted with the next logoff / reboot - EN-US is the default language again. Is there a way around this behaviour? I'm using the default 'XPMUser' in windows xp mode. I also checked 'turn off advanced text services' and disabled the language bar and windows xp remembers these settings - just not the default language..

  I followed the steps here to set up Sharepoint integration with reporting services (SSRS) using native mode. (i.e., get a report explorer and viewer web parts) However after adding the cabinet file e.g., STSADM.EXE -o addwppack -filename "C:\ Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Reporting Services\SharePoint\RSWebParts.cab" -globalinstall I still don't see report explorer in the web parts list. I'm very stuck and confused :-(

• Paid service that will bulk convert HTML and text to PDF?

  We have a repository of documents in HTML and text that we're looking to get into PDF format, but my boss (another developer) feels that writing this portion of the application will detract from the main development that we're doing at the moment. Is anyone aware of any services that will be able to do bulk conversions of these documents to PDF? Any services that will also provide thumbnails for the documents is something we're looking for as well.

  I have been looking in using OTRS - ITSM to manage all of our services but wanted to know if any software existed that is not built into a ticket system? Pretty much want to add all services and tie them to an SLA. Once that is done, we would manually declare incidents and the system would automatically send our notificaton to the proper e-mail lists for downtime/planned maintenance. Would be nice if it calculates reports for SLAs etc. thanks

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Firewall - Interface specific rules

  I'm trying to define per interface rules, much like it was in Server 2003. We will be replacing our old 2003 server with a new 2008 R2 server. The server runs IIS and SQL Server. It's a dedicated server at the hosting company. We use a OpenVPN connection from the office to access SQL server, RDesktop, FTP and other administrative services. Only http and ssh is listening on the public interface. On the old server running 2003, I was able to define global rules for http and ssh, and allow other services only on the vpn interface. I can't find a way to do the same on 2008 R2. I understand that there is the Network Location Awareness service, firewall rules are applied according to the current network location. But I don't understand the purpose of this on a server. The only close solution I found is to set the scope on the firewall rule and restrict remote ip addresses to the private subnet of the office. But the ports will still be listening on the public interface. So how can I restrict a firewall rule to the connections coming from the vpn interface ? A note on this page states that scoping a rule to an interface does not exist anymore: In earlier versions of Windows, many of these command accepted a parameter called interface. This parameter is not supported in the firewall context in Windows Vista or later versions of Windows. I can't believe that they simply decided to remove a core firewall functionality that every firewall has. There must be a way to restrict a rule to an interface. Any ideas ? I'm still unable to find an adequate solution to my problem. So for now, my workaround is this: Administrative services listen on VPN IP address Firewall rules restrict the scope to the local IP address of VPN Public services listen on all interfaces, no scope restriction on firewall rules This is not optimal, if I change the IP address of the VPN, I need to edit the firewall rules too. It won't be the case if the rules were bound to the interface.

Currently when looking at the "Critical" count I find it difficult to decide if an internal service is affected (I should take immediate action) or an external service (I just acknowledge the problem). Is there a way to keep a problem acknowledgement for future down-times of the checked host/service? Is there some way to auto-acknowledge the state change of external hosts/services?

If the ratio is better then BitTorrent Network provides you services on priority.   We are trying to run the Preparation Wizard for Essential Business Server 2008 and receive the following error. "A list of servers could not be collected from Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Ensure that your network is functioning correctly and that this computer can access AD DS." Now I tried to start them again and open the oracle db but I couldn't make a connection, the OracleDBConsoleORCL service cannot be started although it was not one of the services that I stopped, it was starting automatically! • Path is too long

  Bugged by the irritating "Path is too long after being fully qualified" error while running in the Development Fabric? The solution is pretty funny and not so obvious unfortunately. The culprit here is not your app, but the Development Fabric. The DevFab accumulates a lot of temporary junk comprising of local storage locations, cached binaries, configuration, diagnostics information and cached compiled web site content files over its lifetime. They are typically stored at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\dftmp. The Azure Tools will periodically clean this up, but some time you have to play janitor and take the law in your hands ;). The csrun.exe has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. One of them is the ability to clean the development fabric's temporary junk accumulated over time. You can do this by  running the Azure command prompt with elevated privileges and running csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown and then csrun.exe /devfabric:clean If the problem still persists then the application directory structure could indeed be too long. A workaround to this is changing the Development Fabric temporary directory to point to a shorter path. The temporary directory path can be addressed by an environment variable _CSRUN_STATE_DIRECTORY. You can try setting its value to something like "C:\WA" or "C:\A" this will reduce some 25+ characters from your path. Do not forget to close Visual Studio and expressly shutdown the dev fab with csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown (Under elevated privileges of course).   Last October I learnt my company wanted to put together a new blog/social networking policy. I decided that out of respect for my employer I wouldn’t blog until this was sorted out. This was perhaps was an easy decision to make as I was separating from my ex-wife at the time and frankly needed the time to concentrate on other things. So now the company has a brand new policy and I’m back into the dating game I thought I would blow off the cobwebs and get back to what I enjoy doing. First and foremost SQL Server 2008 R2 is almost here and to mark that fact I will be in London on Thursday at the Microsoft UK Tech-Day’s event. The subjects I most want to see are … Power Pivot – this is such an exciting technology! I’ve been a fan of Qlikview for years so it will be good to see how it compares SQL Azure – Cloud Computing is big right now, so it will be interesting to see what the RTM product can do. I have afew ideas for its use and will be interesting to see if SQL Azure is the right product … more on this in the next few weeks. Master Data Services – This is one of those technologies that Microsoft hasn’t been making much noise about … and frankly should have because it is a game changer. Hmmm, queue future “What is … ?” post StreamInsight – An exciting events technology, again another “What is … ?” post is around the corner on that. So, you thought that SQL Server 2008 R2 was just a release to make sure the years between SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2010 weren’t so long? I am however disappointed that Clustering across Subnets didn’t make it and not sure if Control Points made it but all will be revealed later on this week. Till then I will have to wait!
