• How can I test if a point lies within a 3d shape with its surface defined by a point cloud?

  Hi I have a collection of points which describe the surface of a shape that should be roughly spherical, and I need a method with which to determine if any other given point lies within this shape. I've previously been approximating the shape as an exact sphere, but this has proven too inaccurate and I need a more accurate method. Simplicity and speed is favourable over complete accuracy, a good approximation will suffice. I've come across techniques for converting a point cloud to a 3d mesh, but most things I have found have been very complicated, and I am looking for something as simple as possible. Any ideas?   I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

  I'm using YSlow to improve the speed of my site, and I'm having trouble with the "compress components with gzip" grade. I have this in my .htaccess file: SetOutputFilter DEFLATE AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css application/x-javascript But YSlow is saying There are 4 plain text components that should be sent compressed * http://crewinyourcode.com/css/reset.css * http://crewinyourcode.com/css/inner-pages/index.css * http://crewinyourcode.com/script/css/jquery-ui-1.8.custom.css * http://crewinyourcode.com/js/inner-pages/index.js How can I gzip the css and js files? Also...I don't have access to the httpd.conf file.

• Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

  I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

• How can two threads access a common array of buffers with minimal blocking ? (c#)

  Hello, I'm working on an image processing application where I have two threads on top of my main thread: 1 - CameraThread that captures images from the webcam and writes them into a buffer 2 - ImageProcessingThread that takes the latest image from that buffer for filtering. The reason why this is multithreaded is because speed is critical and I need to have CameraThread to keep grabbing pictures and making the latest capture ready to pick up by ImageProcessingThread while it's still processing the previous image. My problem is about finding a fast and thread-safe way to access that common buffer and I've figured that, ideally, it should be a triple buffer (image[3]) so that if ImageProcessingThread is slow, then CameraThread can keep on writing on the two other images and vice versa. What sort of locking mechanism would be the most appropriate for this to be thread-safe ? I looked at the lock statement but it seems like it would make a thread block-waiting for another one to be finished and that would be against the point of triple buffering. • Google Maps API v3... non-mobile?

  I'm trying to make a Google Maps widget for my website but all of the examples are for full-screen mobile devices. The tutorials work when I copy paste them exactly as shown but they don't seem to work when I want them to only occupy a portion of the page. From what I've read, the v3 is the best API yet (for what I need) because of its speed and compatibility with mobile devices. I plan to make a widget very similar to the MarkerClusterer example from the demo gallery but I can't get it working. Is this a common issue? I know I'm being vague but I would appreciate some help. • Loading a DB table into nested dictionaries in Python

  Hi, I have a table in MySql DB which I want to load it to a dictionary in python. the table columns is as follows: id,url,tag,tagCount tagCount is the number of times that a tag has been repeated for a certain url. So in that case I need a nested dictionary, in other words a dictionary of dictionary, to load this table. Because each url have several tags for which there are different tagCounts.the code that I used is this:( the whole table is about 22,000 records ) cursor.execute( ''' SELECT url,tag,tagCount FROM wtp ''') urlTagCount = cursor.fetchall() d = defaultdict(defaultdict) for url,tag,tagCount in urlTagCount: d[url][tag]=tagCount print d first of all I want to know if this is correct.. and if it is why it takes so much time?   So the user may search for "10 mbit" after which I want to capture the "10" so I can use it in a speed-search rather than a string-search. This isn't a problem, the below regexp does this fine: if (preg_match("/(\d+)\smbit/", $string)){ ... } But, the user may search for something like "10/10 mbit" or "10-100 mbit". I don't want to match those with the above regexp - they should be handled in another fashion. So I would like a regexp that matches "10 mbit" if the number is all-numeric as a whole word (i.e. contained by whitespace, newline or lineend/linestart) Using lookbehind, I did this: if (preg_match("#(?<!/)(\d+)\s+mbit#i", $string)){ Just to catch those that doesn't have "/" before them, but this matched true for this string: "10/10 mbit" so I'm obviously doing something wrong here, but what?

  Although I'm coding in Objective C, this is more of a general programming question. What is the best way to convert a constantly changing scalar value to a changing interval or frequency? Right now every time the scalar value changes I am destroying the NSInterval ie [self.myTimer invalidate]; self.myTimer = nil; and creating a new one, but this seems like a VERY expensive way to achieve my goal, since the changing scalar value in my case represents the horizontal velocity of a swipe. For a rough analogy, think of the speed of a swipe being reflected in a visual metronome, the faster you swipe, the higher(shorter interval) the frequency of the metronome.

• How do i handle a heavy page?

  I have been asked to design & develop a page in asp.net which contains 7 tabs.Each table contains 2 Editable gridview & clicking on gridview cell should open a popup & that popup will open a new popup ( I would say nested popup). even when i switch from one tab to another. It should hold the griddata & whenever user will finish all the operations he/she will click on save button which will save all the data contained in the tabs. The page is really too too too heavy. It will definitely take a long time to load as it contains gridview operations , popup related jobs, tab data & tab switching. I am finding the best way i can achieve this with an acceptable speed of operation. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

• change Magento to new server, images of existing product do not shown in frontend

  I have moved a Magento website to a new server to optimize speed. All images appear to be replaced by image placeholders. I tried to set permission for media to 777, when I delete cache media folder and refresh, a new cache folder is created automatically, but only with placeholder images inside. I flushed image cache, reindex in magento backend but still no hope. What should I do now? Somethings might be helpful: . It's fine to create new product with images . Flush cache, only placeholders images are created . tried to use magento-cleanup.php, no hope . tried to remove .htaccess in media folder . the images of products are there in the media folder, just not in cache folder. Magento only looks at the cache folder for image :(

• MySQL, how can I SELECT WHERE one field value doesn't occurs in another?

  I'm trying to do a search on my test server, speed isn't so important. I want to find if a phrase, the whole contents of one field, occurs in any part (as a whole) doesn't occur in another field. Heres my current query which finds if the phrase does occur SELECT pads.padid, pads.programname, keywords.word FROM Pads JOIN keywords ON Pads.Padid = keywords.Padid WHERE pads.Programname = keywords.word AND RemoveMeDate = '2001-01-01 00:00:00' My problem is that the field word contains other words too. I need to produce a count of where there isn't a keywords record with keywords.word equal to pads.programname ? EDIT: So if I have these records Pads: PadID=3 ProgramName=my prog PadID=4 ProgramName=Bad prog PadID=5 ProgramName=Good prog PadID=6 ProgramName=other prog Keywords: PadID=3 word=fox prog PadID=3 word=pig prog PadID=4 word=big prog PadID=4 word=nice prog PadID=5 word=fox prog PadID=6 word=bad prog PadID=6 word=fox prog The query I want would retun a count of 3 and record 6 has bad prog

  My jQuery code (using ajax) request's data from a php script (pgiproxy.php) using the following function: function grabPage($pageURL) { $homepage = file_get_contents($pageURL); echo $homepage; } I then extract the html code i need from the returned data using jQuery and insert it into a div called #BFX, as follows: $("#btnNewLoadMethod1").click(function(){ $('#temp1').load('pgiproxy.php', { data : $("#formdata").serialize(), mode : "graph"} , function() { $('#temp').html( $('#temp1').find('center').html() ); $('#BFX').html( $('#temp').html() ); }); }); This works fine. I get the html data (which is a gif image) i need displayed on screen in the correct div. The problem is i can see the html data loading into the div (dependant on network speed), but what I want is to insert the extracted html code into #BFX ONLY when the ajax request has fully completed.

• Can you specify if aspnet_compiler.exe creates a debug or release build?

  I wish to compile my asp.net MVC application using aspnet_compiler.exe from the comandline to speed up cold startup. I'm wondering how it determines if it should do a release or debug build. Is it always release? Does it depend on what the web.config file says when you run aspnet_compiler.exe? What happens to an application that's been compiled w/ aspnet_compiler.exe if someone changed the bug attribute in the web.config file after it has been published? Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.

• Have you switched from CodeIgniter to Kohana?

  Hi All, I usually just work with straight PHP, but want to try MVC and see if a framework will really speed up development. After much waffling, analysis paralysis, and many dumb SO questions, I thought I had settled on CodeIgniter for my next PHP project. However, I am now seriously considering Kohana. Has anyone made the switch from CI to Kohana? If so, why? What's better about the actual code, libraries, etc? Edit: Hi All, I did end up going with Kohana. It's easy to use, but more importantly, it's easy NOT to use, since there are a lot of things I like to work with native PHP for. It's ridiculously extensible, well coded, and seems like it is beginning to pull out ahead of CI in a few things like putting views in views, passing subview data, etc. I am sure CI will catch up, but Kohana should be 3 steps ahead by then =o)

• SQL Query - 20mil records - Best practice to return information

  I have a SQL database that has the following table: Table: PhoneRecords ID(identity Seed) FirstName LastName PhoneNumber ZipCode Very simple straight forward table. This table has over 20million records. I am looking for the best way to do queries that pull out records based off area codes from the table. For instance here is an example query that I have done. SELECT phonenumber, firstname FROM [PhoneRecords] WHERE (phone LIKE '2012042%') OR (phone LIKE '2012046%') OR (phone LIKE '2012047%') OR (phone LIKE '2012083%') OR (phone LIKE '2012088%') OR (phone LIKE '2012841%') As you can see this is an ugly query, but it would get the job done (if I wasn't running into timeout issues) Can anyone tell me the best way for speed/optimization to do the above query to display the results? Currently that query above takes around 2 hours to complete on a 9gb 1600mhz ram, i7 930 quadcore OC'd 4.01ghz. I obviously have the computer power required to do such a query, but still takes too long for queries.

• SSIS Custom Control Task Debugging UI in BIDS and VS

  I've created a SSIS Custom Task in C# and I'm currently developing the UI. I was wondering if there is a better way of debugging the UI instead of compiling the project, copying the DLL's into the appropriate DTS folder and then opening the test Package within BIDS and then attaching the process to Visual Studio. This part I'm not bothered about but once you've tested the UI and made changes to UI within Visual Studio. I've got to recomplile the DLL's and then repeat the entire process. I've got to close BIDS and VS because they don't release the DLL's before I have to start the entire process over again. Does anyone have any tips to speed up this process. It's just so frustrating having to do this everytime.

  I have a delegate method with the following tasks: get something from the internet (ex: some image from a web site); process that image in a certain way; display the result in a subview ; getting the image takes some time, depending on the network's speed so the result of its processing is displayed in the subview after that little while. my problem: during the time between getting the image and showing the result the device looks unresponsive. any attempt to put some spinner, or any other method which is called inside this main procedure has no effect until the result is processed. how should I change this behaviour? I would like to put a big spinner during that waiting time. thank you.

• Is it possible to give a python dict an initial capacity (and is it usefull)

  I am filling a python dict with around 10,000,000 items. My understanding of dict (or hashtables) is that when too much elements get in them, the need to resize, an operation that cost quite some time. Is there a way to say to a python dict that you will be storing at least n items in it, so that it can allocate memory from the start? Or will this optimization not do any good to my running speed? (And no, I have not checked that the slowness of my small script is because of this, I actually wouldn't now how to do that. This is however something I would do in Java, set the initial capacity of the HashSet right)

  Hello Experts, I have been developing applications using VB.net for the past 5 years. As I tried to learn Java earlier and found it very difficult for me I did stick on to VB.net. And for me C# is more or less similar to Java. Now I cannot get away with it. I have to code on C#. Is there a way I can get to speed with C# fast.
