• Powershell: Install-dotNET4 function

  This function will download and install ,NET 4.0. It uses the Get-Framework-Versions function to determine if the installation is necessary or not. Internet Connectivity will be required as the script auto downloads the setup file (and sleeps for 360 seconds... I had a function in there to monitor for install completion at first, turns out the setup file spawns so many childprocesses the function just got confused and locked up -_-)Alternatively you could drop the installation file in the folder specified on the $folderPath variable too. That will skip the download and use the file. This function easily adapts in to other versions f.e. • MPI Cluster Debugger launch integration in VS2010

  Let's assume that you have all the HPC bits installed and that you have existing MPI code (or you created a "Hello World" project using the MPI project template). Of course, you create a single MPI application and at runtime it will correspond to multiple processes (of the same app) launched on multiple nodes (i.e. machines) on the cluster. So how do you debug such a situation by simply hitting the familiar "F5" keystroke (i.e. Debug - Start Debugging)?WATCH IT INSTEAD OF READING ABOUT ITIf you can't bear to read through all the details below, just watch this 19-minute screencast explaining this VS2010 feature. Alternatively, or even additionally, keep on reading.REQUIREMENTWhen you debug an MPI application, you would want the copying of resources from your client machine (where Visual Studio is installed) to each compute node (where Windows HPC Server is installed) to take place automatically for you. 'Resources' in the previous sentence includes your application binary, plus any binary or data dependencies it may have, plus PDBs if needed, plus the debug CRT of the correct bitness, plus msvsmon for remote debugging to work. You would also want, after copying is complete, to have your app and msvsmon launched and attached so that you can hit breakpoints back in Visual Studio on your client machine. All these thing that you would want are delivered in VS2010.STEPS TO F51. In your MPI project where you have placed a breakpoint go to Project Properties - Configuration Properties - Debugging. Ensure the "Debugger to launch" combo box value is set to MPI Cluster Debugger.2. There are a whole bunch of properties here and typically you can ignore all of them except one: Run Environment. By default it is set to run 1 process on your local machine and if you change the number after that to, for example, 4 it will launch 4 processes of your app on your local machine.You want this to run on your cluster though, so go to the dropdown arrow at the end of the Run Environment cell and open it to expose the "Edit Hpc node" menu which opens the Node Selector dialog:In this dialog you can enter (or pick from a list) the cluster head node name and then the number of processes you want to execute on the cluster and then hit OK and… you are done.3. Press F5 and watch your breakpoint get hit (after giving it some time for copying, remote execution, attachment and symbol resolution to take place).GOING DEEPERIn the MPI Cluster Debugger project properties above, you can see many additional properties to the Run Environment. They are all optional, but you may want to understand them in order to fine tune your cluster debugging. • Configuring Touchpad Multi-Tap on Ubuntu 11.10

  I am having a hard time configuring my notebook's touchpad. I can do everything I can in Windows with the exception of three-finger tap, which doesn't work, and the action of two-finger tap which is giving me the equivalent to a right-mouse click, when I wanted a middle-mouse click. I read on a forum to use this as a guide. The problem is that I can't even find the configuration file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf. I tried running pacman -S xf86-input-synaptics but I don't have the pacman program installed. When I try to install it by sudo apt-get install I get a pacman game instead! I know the guide is for archlinux, so maybe that's why it doesn't work with me. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on an Asus N82JV. Any help on this is appreciated.   Earlier, I asked a question about how to measure the quality of a project. The outcome of that question was that the quality of the project can be divided into two parts: Internal quality (code quality, measurable by code quality metrics) External quality (Acceptance test, how well the software meets the requirements) So based on that, I want to set up some research and validate the outcome of the project. The problem is, I will conduct this research on my own, so it's not possible to run the project once in BDD style and the other one in waterfall by myself. It's also not possible to compare BDD and waterfall projects on a larger scale, due to the fact that there are not enough BDD projects that can be measured because of the age of BDD. So, my question is: did anybody face this problem? How could I execute my experiment in such a way that it is of scientific value?

• unable to save files from Code Blocks ONLY

  i have an NTFS drive mounted in a folder /Tejas i have created a new project using it in a folder in this drive but i am unable to save the changes, i get the following error message Couldn't save project /Tejas/Project/codeblock/ciphers/ciphers.cbp (Maybe the file is write-protected?) i get similar message even when i try to save the c source file i am able to edit and save files using gedit editor... why am i getting this problem?

• Visual Studio 2010 Setup Projects and x64 Support

  I was taking the Windows Azure CmdLets project and getting it into an MSI just to make it easier to deploy in a nice package.  I ran into problems with the Setup project not being able to properly establish the right registry settings for an x64 environment. Even though you set the target platform on the Setup project to x64 the InstallUtil.lib that get’s run is still x86.  In order to have it work property, you need to follow the steps identified here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kz0ke5xt.aspx  The section “64-bit managed custom actions throw a System.BadImageFormatException exception” covers the steps you need to follow, using the Orca MSI editor to replace the InstallUtilLib.dll from the one that the Setup Project embeds (x86) to a x64 version. Now, works like a charm… Resultant installer here: http://cicoria.com/Downloads/AzureManagementCmdletsInstall.msi The CmdLets are the same ones from the Training Kit – November 2010 release.

Due to the complexity of the single page, particularly the JavaScripts used, I've think creating a dedicated project for the client side of web development and another for service side will organize and simplify the development. solution | +-- web / client side (single html page, js, css) | - contains asp.net project, and nancy library | to host the modules in application project folder | +-- application / service (nancy modules, bootstrap for other layer) | . . . and other layers (three tier, domain driven, etc) . Is this a good way of organizing a complex single page application? Am I over-engineering the web app, incurring too much complexity?

Subversion runs # this hook by invoking a program (script, executable, binary, etc.) # named 'post-commit' (for which this file is a template) with the # following ordered arguments: # # [1] REPOS-PATH (the path to this repository) # [2] REV (the number of the revision just committed) So I made the following command to test: REPOS="$1" REV="$2" echo "Updated project $REPOS to $REV" However when I edit files in Project1 for example, this outputs "Updated project /home/flx/svn/flxdev to 1016" I'd like this to be: "Updated project Project1 to 1016" Having this variable allows me to specify to do different actions per project post-commit.   I have an open source project that works on .Net 2.0 and up. The thing is though that I prefer to use Visual Studio 2012, which forces the solution and project files to only work with VS2010/2012. What exactly should I do? I don't want for my users to have to create a solution from scratch if they don't have access to VS2010, but yet, I also don't want to attempt to keep 3 different project files in sync(VS2005, VS2008, and VS2010/2012) What is the usual solution for this?

• Exporting XNA class library as a DLL file

  I have downloaded an open source project that I intend to use with my current game. The download came with all the class files from the original project as well as a pre-compiled DLL file representing the project. I was able to easily link this DLL with my current project and get it working just fine, no problems there. The problem I now have is that I want to make a couple of changes to the original libraries (extend its functionality a bit to better suit my needs) and re-export the class library as a DLL again, but I have no clue how to do this. Is there some simple way in VS where I can just take the class library and export/compile it as a DLL file again or is there more to it than that? This seems like something that should be pretty simple but my efforts to find an answer have so far come up with nothing. Thanks in advance.

• How different is WPF from ASP.NET [closed]

  I have been quickly moved over to a different project at work because the project needs more help. I was chosen because they are confident in my abilities and they thought I would be best fit for the next couple weeks to help finish the application out. I am a little nervous. I do tend to pick things up quickly. I was moved to a different project at the beginning of this year and now I know it like the back of my hand. Previously I was on another project. Both of these projects were an ASP.NET web application, which I believe is considered a winforms web application? The project I am moving to is a desktop WPF application. I have read that many people enjoy developing their applications with WPF. I just have never dealt/worked with WPF before. I like to consider myself pretty good at ASP.NET/C# and I do a solid job. We deal with a lot of data processing from the database and report generation. So I do get to experience C# more so than some web applications where the C# end of it is mostly just event driven and simple instructions. How different are the two? Will it be completely foreign to me? Or is it just a different way of looking at a problem and I can familiarize myself quickly? Thanks for the input.

• Small change in MVVM Light Toolkit templates for Blend 4 RC

  Ah, the joy of new releases… You will find that the MVVM Light Toolkit works fine with Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC except for a few adjustments: Blend templates The path to the Expression Blend 4 project templates changed. If you start Expression Blend 4 RC now, you will likely not see the MVVM Light templates in the New Project dialog.   New Project dialog with MVVM Light To restore the templates, follow the steps: Open Windows Explorer Navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Expression (or simply type My Documents in Windows Explorer and then open the Expression folder). Change the name of the “Blend 4 beta” folder into “Blend 4”. That’s it, you should now see the templates in the New Project dialog in Blend 4. Note that since the new name is “Blend 4”, I hope that I won’t need to do the same exercise when Blend 4 RTM is released! Windows Phone 7 templates Since the Windows Phone 7 tools are not ready yet for Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC, the templates in the Silverlight for Windows Phone folders will not work. You will get an error if you try to create a new such project in the newly released environment. I hesitated to remove these templates from the current packages, but honestly that is a lot of trouble for a very short time before the tools for Windows Phone 7 are released (note: I don’t have any information as to when these tools will be released). In the mean time, just don’t create a WinPhone7 application. Reminder: If you want to write code for Windows Phone 7, you need to keep the Visual Studio 2010 RC as well as Expression Blend 4 beta. • Why maven so slow compared to automake?

  I have a Maven project consists of around 100 modules. I have reason to decompose the project to so many modules, and I don't think I should merge them in order to speed up the build process. I have read a lot of projects by other people, e.g., the Maven project itself, and Apache Archiva, and Hudson project, they all consists of a lot of modules, nearly 100 maybe, more or less. The problem is, to build them all need so much time, 3 hours for the first time build (this is acceptable because a lot of artifacts to download), and 15 minutes for the second build (this is not acceptable). For automake, things are similarly, the first time you need to configure the project, to prepare the magical config.h file, it's far more complex then what maven does. But it's still fast, maybe 10 seconds on my Debian box. After then, make install requires maybe 10 minutes for the first time build. However, when everything get prepared, the .o object files are generated, they don't have to be rebuild at all for the second time build. (In Maven, everything rebuild at everytime.) I'm very wondering, how guys working for Maven projects can bare this long time for each build, I'm just can't sit down calmly during each time Maven build, it took too long time, really.
