• Migrate Data and Schema from MySQL to SQL Server

  Are there any free solutions for automatically migrating a database from MySQL to SQL Server Server that "just works"? I've been attempting this simple (at least I thought so) task all day now. I've tried: SQL Server Management Studio's Import Data feature Create an empty database Tasks - Import Data... .NET Framework Data Provider for Odbc Valid DSN (verified it connects) Copy data from one or more tables or views Check 1 VERY simple table Click Preview Get Error: The preview data could not be retrieved. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: ERROR [42000] [MySQL][ODBC 5.1 Driver][mysqld-5.1.45-community]You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '"table_name"' at line 1 (myodbc5.dll) A similar error occurs if I go through the rest of the wizard and perform the operation. The failed step is "Setting Source Connection" the error refers to retrieving column information and then lists the above error. It can retrieve column information just fine when I modify column mappings so I really don't know what the issue is. I've also tried getting various MySql tools to output ddl statements that SQL Server understand but haven't succeeded. I've tried with MySQL v5.1.11 to SQL Server 2005 and with MySQL v5.1.45 to SQL Server 2008 (with ODBC drivers 3.51.27.00 and 5.01.06.00 respectively)

• How do I stop Chrome from yellowing my site's input boxes?

  Among other text and visual aids on a form submission, post-validation, I'm coloring my input boxes red to signify the interactive area needing attention. On Chrome (and for Google Toolbar users) the auto-fill feature re-colors my input forms yellow. Here's the complex issue: I want auto-complete allowed on my forms, as it speeds users logging in. I am going to check into the ability to turn the autocomplete attribute to off if/when there's an error triggered, but it is a complex bit of coding to programmatically turn off the auto-complete for the single effected input on a page. This, to put it simply, would be a major headache. So to try to avoid that issue, is there any simpler method of stopping Chrome from re-coloring the input boxes? [edit] I tried the !important suggestion below and it had no effect. I have not yet checked Google Toolbar to see if the !important attribute woudl work for that. As far as I can tell, there isn't any means other than using the autocomplete attribute (which does appear to work).

• PendingIntent in Widget + TaskKiller

  Hi, I've developed an Application (called Instant Buttons) and the app has a widget feature. This widget uses PendingIntent for the onClick of the widget. My PendingIntent code is something like this: Intent active = new Intent(context, InstantWidget.class); active.setAction(String.valueOf(appWidgetId)); active.putExtra("blabla", blabla); //Some data PendingIntent actionPendingIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(context, 0, active, 0); actionPendingIntent.cancel(); actionPendingIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(context, 0, active, 0); remoteViews.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.button, actionPendingIntent); The onReceive gets the intent and do some stuff with the MediaPlayer class to reproduce a sound. I have reports from some users that the widgets stop working after a while and with some research i've discovered is because the Task Killers. It seems that when you kill the app in the TaskKiller, the PendingIntent is erased from memory, so when you click the widget, it doesn't know what to do. Is there any solution for this? Is my code wrong or something or it's the default behavior of the PendingIntent? Is there something I can use to avoid the TaskKiller to stop my widgets from working?? Greetings.

• How do you use indent in vim for web development?

  I'm starting to use Linux and Vim at work. I'm starting to read vims documentation and creating my own .vimrc file and such. I'm a web developer working with HTML, XML, CSS, JS, Python, PHP, ZPT, DTML and SQL. I would like to have an indent feature like this one: for each language/set, a corresponding indent solution. So, in js, writing function test(){|} would turn in function test(){ | } If php, writing <?php function test(){|}: <?php function test(){ | } <?php> ...and such. Writing a function definition in Python, and then creating a for loop sentece, it would automatically create an indent. I'm starting with autoindent, smartindent, cindent but I'm a little confused about their differences. How do the indent in vim works? Am I supposed to download plugins for each language? Is the behavior I described possible with already existing plugins you're used to or do I have to create it? I keep seeing people using Vim and I'm trying to do this as well since the machine I'm using is too limited, but I'm afraid I won't be able to have a decent auto indenting solution in it. (I have used autoindenting in a little small project in Visual Studio, and really liked their approach. Is there a plugin for that?)

• Importing Excel spreadsheet data into existing Access DB

  I've designed an Access 2003 DB with 3 tables: APPLICATIONS, SERVERS, and INSTALLATIONS. Records in the APPLICATIONS and SERVERS tables are uniquely identified by a synthetic primary key (in Access, an "auto number"). The INSTALLATIONS table is essentially a mapping table between APPLICATIONS and SERVERS: it's a list of records of which applications are installed on which servers. A record in the INSTALLATIONS table is also identified by a synthetic primary key, and it consists of an APPLICATION_ID and SERVER_ID for the records in their respective tables. I have an Excel 2003 spreadsheet I would like to import into this database, but it's proving difficult. The spreadsheet is made up of several tabs/worksheets, each one representing a server with its own listing of installed applications. I'm not sure how to proceed with an import - the "Get External Data -- Import" feature in Access has an import "In an Existing Table" option, but it's greyed out. I'm also unsure how I build the relationships between applications and servers for importing records into the INSTALLATIONS table. I had previously fooled around with adding some security to the Access DB file. I think I removed everything but perhaps I didn't and that's causing the problem? • Rendering maps from raw SVG data in Java

  In an application of mine I have to display locations and great circle paths in a map which is rendered to PNG and then displayed on the web. For this I simply use a world map (NASA's Blue Marbel in fact) scaled to various "zoom levels" as base image and only display the a part of it matching the final image size and fitting all items to be displayed. Straight forward so far. Now I came across Wikipedia's awesome blank SVG maps which contain all the country codes for easy reference and I was wondering whether it was possible to use those to have more customized colors and to highliht countries etc. So I did a bit of googling and was looking for Java libraries which would enable me to load the blank SVG map to memory allows for easy reference/selection of certain paths do manipulations of coloring, stroke widths etc render to a buffered image as the background for the great-circle paths/nodes What I came across quite often was Batik, but it looks like a really heavy framework and I'm not quite sure whether it is what I'm looking for. I have recently played around with Raphaël a bit and I like the way it handles working with vector graphics in code. If the Java framework for my purpose would feature a similar interface, that would be a nice-to-have. Any recommendations what toolset would be approriate for my purposes?

• Should checkins be small steps or complete features?

  Two of version controls uses seem to dictate different checkin styles. distibution centric: changesets will generally reflect a complete feature. In general these checkins will be larger. This style is more user/maintainer friendly. rollback centric: changesets will be individual small steps so the history can function like an incredibly powerful undo. In general these checkins will be smaller. This style is more developer friendly. I like to use my version control as really powerful undo while while I banging away at some stubborn code/bug. In this way I'm not afraid to make drastic changes just to try out a possible solution. However, this seems to give me a fragmented file history with lots of "well that didn't work" checkins. If instead I try to have my changeset reflect complete features I loose the use of my version control software for experimentation. However, it is much easier for user/maintainers to figure out how the code is evolving. Which has great advantages for code reviews, managing multiple branches, etc. So what's a developer to do? checkin small steps or complete features?

• Different results between Android Geocoder and Google Geocoding web service

  I am creating an Android application and I need to use the geolocation. I have started by using the Geocoder API from Android (android.location.geocoder) but it causes some issues (timed out waiting for response from server) which seem to be common according to what I have read. To make my application work when this kind of error occurs, I use the Geocoding web service. Now, the application works every time. The problem is that the results returned by the geocoder from API and the geocoder from the web service are not the same. For example the web service returns only 3 addresses with only city name and country whereas the geocoding from the API returns about 8 addresses with the feature name, the thoroughfare, the locality... The question is: is there a way to make the results from the web service exactly the same than the ones from the API? • Should I learn to code?

  Hi All, This is more of a philosophical question than a technical one, but I’d like some opinions on it, and I think that there are many others in my position that would benefit. My issue is that I don’t really have time to learn how to code. I know, I know… no one has time anymore, but please hear me out. Since learning to use Drupal about 2 years ago I’ve been involved with several projects wherein I’ve become the default quasi-developer, front-end designer, site manager, and system administrator. What I’ve found is that I can produce fairly nice, feature rich Drupal sites with the wealth of contrib. modules out there (Views, CCK, image handling, etc….). BUT! I can’t code. I know enough PHP to insert something into a block, or re-word a string, but that’s about it. I still don’t really even know how arrays work. My question Succinctly, my question is: Given the time that I have available for all of this stuff – in addition to a full-time job and regular life – am I better off trying to become more expert at the front-end stuff, or should I just learn PHP already? Pros 1. If a project doesn’t use Drupal, I’ll know enough PHP to be able to participate. 2. Learning PHP would help my Drupal development too 3. Learning PHP would make front-end theming easier 4. Learning PHP should give me that missing background in programming – and should allow me to learn other languages in the future Cons 1. At 28, I know I’m not too old to learn anything. But am I too old to become ‘good’? 2. Am I better off getting better and better at front-end UX work? 3. Am I better off farming out the PHP work? Suggestions from coders welcome! Thanks Terry

• Creating sublines on Joomla menu items

  In my toplevel menu items, I would like to make a subline for each item. I don't think it's possible to do by default, byt YooTheme has done it in many of their templates. The menu output look like this <div class="moduletable_menu"> <ul id="mainmenu" class="menu"> <li class="active item1" id="current"> <a href="URL_HIDDEN"> <span>Services</span> </a> </li> </ul> This basically outputs a one line menu item like so: Services What I would like to do is have a menu item like this: Services Service x, Service y, Service z For reference, have a look at the main menu on the YooTheme demo page. The way YooTheme does this, is using two pipes (||) as a linebreak, so in the Joomla backend you type "Services||Service x, Service y, Service z" as the menu title, and then there must be some fancy javascript that breaks this title into two spans, ready to be styled using css. Does anyone know of an easy way to code this? Please note that I am looking to build this feature into a custom template (ie. non-yootheme). Also note that I am not using MooTools, but Jquery instead.

• Generated images fail to load in browser

  I've got a page on a webapp that has about 13 images that are generated by my application, which is written in the Kohana PHP framework. The images are actually graphs. They are cached so they are only generated once, but the first time the user visits the page, and the images all have to be generated, about half of the images don't load in the browser. Once the page has been requested once and images are cached, they all load successfully. Doing some ad-hoc testing, if I load an individual image in the browser, it takes from 450-700 ms to load with an empty cache (I checked this using Google Chrome's resource tracking feature). For reference, it takes around 90-150 ms to load a cached image. Even if the image cache is empty, I have the data and some of the application's startup tasks cached, so that after the first request, none of that data needs to be fetched. My questions are: Why are the images failing to load? It seems like the browser just decides not to download the image after a certain point, rather than waiting for them all to finish loading. What can I do to get them to load the first time, with an empty cache? Obviously one option is to decrease the load times, and I could figure out how to do that by profiling the app, but are there other options? As I mentioned, the app is in the Kohana PHP framework, and it's running on Apache. As an aside, I've solved this problem for now by fetching the page as soon as the data is available (it comes from a batch process), so that the images are always cached by the time the user sees them. That feels like a kludgey solution to me, though, and I'm curious about what's actually going on.

• Reducing Dimension For SVM in Sensor Network

  Hi Everyone, I am looking for some suggestions on a problem that I am currently facing. I have a set of sensor say S1-S100 which is triggered when some event E1-E20 is performed. Assume, normally E1 triggers S1-S20, E2 triggers S15-S30, E3 triggers S20-s50 etc and E1-E20 are completely independent events. Occasionally an event E might trigger any other unrelated sensor. I am using ensemble of 20 svm to analyze each event separately. My features are sensor frequency F1-F100, number of times each sensor is triggered and few other related features. I am looking for a technique that can reduce the dimensionality of the sensor feature(F1-F100)/ or some techniques that encompasses all of the sensor and reduces the dimension too(i was looking for some information theory concept for last few days) . I dont think averaging, maximization is a good idea as I risk loosing information(it did not give me good result). Can somebody please suggest what am I missing here? A paper or some starting idea... • How to provide i18n service for developer and end user

  Many android applications have quite poor i18n-support, and for an understandable reason, as it adds much work for the developer. From a both intuitive and cultural point of view it would be a good thing if end-users could translate the apps themself, and OTA share the translation, without reinstalling the app itself. In concept; as wikipedia, some add content easily, others only use what's there. It's of course important that the service is as easy as possible to use, both for app-developers, and people willing to transcribe. To keep it simple, this is the solution I'm concidering; Developer perspective: Developer uses a customized setContentView when open activities/layouts that will seach for thanslations of xml-entries. (below) The customized version is provided as a free downloadable library/class..., turning the i18n feature to more or less a one liner. User perspective: User downloads app without any translation As app launches, it checks locale running at phone, and will look for a translated xml-file at shared space in SD. If no or old transcribed xml (above), try to download new from internet-service (ansync). This is all done by library above, no need for intents. Translator perspective: Separate app to provide translations for any app using the i18n service above. (Could be just a webapp), with some form of QA on translators/input. QUESTION: Now, for this to work efficiently, it has to be AeasyAP for the developer to even bother, and the most fluent solution would be a customized version of setContentView, that simply loads the translated values from external xml, instead of the ones in the apk. Is this possible at all, and if not, what's your suggested solutions? • An Erroneous SQL Query makes browser hang until script timeout exceeded

  I have an admin page in a Classic ASP web application that allows the admin user to run queries against the database (SQL Server 2000) Whats really strange is that if the query you send has an error in it (an invalid table join, a column you've forgotten to group by etc) the BROWSER hangs (CPU usage goes to maximum) until the SERVER script timeout is exceeded and then spits out a timeout exceeded error (server and browser are on different machines, so not sure how this happens!) I have tried this in IE 8 and FF 3 with the same result. If you run that same query (with errors) directly from SQL Enterprise Manager, it returns the real error immediately. Is this a security feature? Does anyone know how to turn it off? • Can you recommend an easy to use easy to develop CMS?

  We need some easy way to manage web sites at our company, and we are evaluating some CMS tools for this purpose. We do not yet know what features the sites will need to have (but it will definitely be something with lots of functionalities), so we are looking for something with lots of features and more importantly to be easily extensible (if it does not have some feature, we at least want to be able to build-it by ourselves). We have no experience with Content Management Systems but we do with Java, so it has to be something written in Java. We evaluated some tools and from our perspective the following seem the promising of them (in no particular order): OpenCMS dotCMS (Community Edition vs Enterprise Edition) InfoGlue Alfresco (EE vs CE) Magnolia (EE vs EE Pro vs CE) Jahia (CE vs EE) Since we have no experience with either one of them, we were wondering if someone of you who have can share some information about how good they are or how easily they can be used and extended. I know similar questions have been asked on SO and I also know this is highly subjective and people will vote for closing it as soon as it is posted, but for us it is important to know what difficulties other people have been facing in using the above tools (we don’t want to walk a path that takes nowhere if other people already know it leads nowhere). Others could then vote on the posted answers if they agree or not. • Which cms or script for social network wiki?

  Hi, I am building a social network. I need a cms that will allow users to contribute content. Each content item will need to have a google map, list of features, ratings, comments, etc. And the content must be editable by other users with revision control. Also, each user should have a profile with their bookmarked content items, contributed items, comments, etc. It's very important that I can create a template for the wiki/content entries so that each item looks uniform. (and as a kick in the teeth, I would like to be able to search for wiki items using a radial search or map) Joomla was my first choice, as I've used it for many projects, but the wiki functionality is not there. I was also setting up a grou.ps site, but the wiki is so-so - not feature rich and it really doesn't have the option I need. Additionally, I know someone out there will mention Drupal. I may consider it if I can see it put to use without and overabundance of custom programming (I don't mind initial coding, but drupal requires constant coding & recoding - with this site, I dont' have that time commitment) I thought about using mediawiki with buddypress, but i'm not sure if that's the way to go. Thoughts?

  Hi All, I am using asp:button to create a keyboard with A-Z and 0-9 for touch screen using Java script. This keyboard is linked with one textbox. If we click one button corresponding text will be displayed on the textbox. Its working fine. I have included the autocomplete feature to this textbox using jquery JQuery Autocomplete. Problem: The autocomplete is not working if i my user define keyboard. How to modify my key buttons as keyboard keys? Is it possible? Is there any other way to achieve this?   My application data access layer is built using Spring and EclipseLink and I am currently trying to implement the following feature - Ability to switch the current/active persistence unit dynamically for a user. I tried various options and finally ended up doing the following. In the persistence.xml, declare multiple PUs. Create a class with as many EntityManagerFactory attributes as there are PUs defined. • Silverlight 4 webclient authentication - anyone have this working yet?

  So one of the best parts about the new Silverlight 4 beta is that they finally implemented the big missing feature of the networking stack - Network Credentials! In the below I have a working request setup, but for some reason I get a "security error" when the request comes back - is this because twitter.com rejected my api call or something that I'm missing in code? • Display and Use Advanced Find for Product Subscriptions by Account in Microsoft CRM 4.0

  By default when viewing an account in edit mode you have access to Opportunities, Invoices, and Quotes which contain the products being shopped by the account and/or the sales department. I'm trying to determine where to store, display, and use the products that an account has a subscription too. I may not understand the implementation but it seems that there should be "Products" option directly off the root Account management window that will show the user all the products the account has purchased. We are trying to integrate this with our production tracking system where product sales can originate from other channels that will not flow through CRM first. This product subscription does not fit into the Opportunity, Quote, or Invoice model because they are confirmed recurring sales that were automatically purchased via tools like a Public Website, Portal, etc. By enabling this tracking in CRM we can use the advanced find feature to facilitate follow up sales and marketing efforts. Example: Find everyone who is subscribed to model A, so we can notify them of a new holiday campaign where they can get 10% off on all add-ons. It's my assumption that this is a common scenario, however I'd like to better understand how to approach this within the world of Microsoft CRM. Thank you in advance.

• minifying final html output using regex with codeigniter

  Google pages suggest you to minify html i.e. remove all the un-necessary spaces. Codeigniter does have feature of giziping output or it can be done via .htaccess. But still I also would like to remove un-necessary spaces from final html output as well. I played a bit with this peace of code to do it, and it seem to work. This does indeed result in html that is without excess spaces and removes other tab formatting. class Welcome extends CI_Controller { function _output() { echo preg_replace('!\s+!', ' ', $output); } function index(){ ... } } Now the problem with this is there may be tag like <pre>,<textarea>, etc.. which may have space in it and regx should remove them. So, how do I remove excess space from final html, without effecting spaces or formatting for these certain tags using regx? Thanks to @Alan Moore got the answer, this worked for me echo preg_replace('#(?ix)(?>[^\S ]\s*|\s{2,})(?=(?:(?:[^<]++|<(?!/?(?:textarea|pre)\b))*+)(?:<(?>textarea|pre)\b|\z))#', ' ', $output); @ridgerunner here did very good job of analyzing this regx, ended up using his solution. • How are developers using source control, I am trying to find the most efficient way to do source con

  I work in a group of 4 .Net developers. We rarely work on the same project at the same time but it does happen from time to time.We use TFS for source control. My most recent example is a project I just placed into production last night that included 2 WCF services and a web application front end. I worked out of a branch called "prod" because the application is brand new and has never seen the light of day. Now that the project is live, I need to branch off the prod branch for features, bugs, etc... So what is the best way to do this? Do I simple create a new branch and sort of archive the old branch and never use it again? Do I branch off and then merge my branch changes back into the prod branch when I want to deploy to production? And what about the file and assembly version. They are currently at 1.0.0.0. When do they change and why? If I fix a small bug, which number changes if any? If I add a feature, which number changes if any? What I am looking for is what you have found to be the best way to efficiently manage source control. Most places I have worked always seem to bang heads with the source control system in on way or another and I would just like to find out what you have found that works the best.

• BackOffice Database Application FrontEnd - Program in C#/VB.Net or PHP?

  I'm working on a project where there will be a MySQL database containing data that will mostly be displayed on the web using PHP. However, there is a need here for a back-office data entry application (linked to the same MySQL database) that is feature rich and easy to use. what I'm trying to understand is where we are at with web-based frontends. I find that there are still so many events and features that I can make use of in a Windows Desktop GUI written in something like C#, VB.Net or MS Access. I don't have a lot of experience programming UI for web but it's my impression that it's still more difficult and takes longer to get similar or the same functionality using non-MS web technologies (I dislike ASP.net, sorry) as compared to programming the desktop portion in a traditional desktop application language like C#, VB.Net, or MS Access. jQuery and jQuery UI are definately making things easier. Also, there's very rich online applications like Google Docs and Zoho but it's my impression that these are programmed by some of the top web UI programmers around, not to mention that it takes longer to write it and intensive testing to make it work in all of your target browsers. It also takes extra time and code to "block" browsers that don't meet the requirements. What programming language would you recommend? I know I may not have given enough information here but I'm not sure what I'm missing. If you have questions just leave a comment below so I can edit this post and answer the questions.
