• Creating a window manager type overlay for Mac OS X

  I want to make my own window manager for OS X, or at least give it the appearance of a new one. I have many designs written down in a book, and would like to implement them. These include altering, or even completely removing, menu bars, creating entirely new guis for switching applications, etc. I know that OS X does not have a window manager, and that basically the functions that an X11 window manager would perform are done by Carbon, Cocoa, the Dock application, and the window server. I've read that it would take an incredible amount of reverse engineering to write my own api, etc. at the hardware level. I am still not that good at programming though, and don't have that kind of time. That's why I was thinking of maybe running an application on top of OS X that will function like a separate window manager - and do everything that the normal OS GUI / window manager would do. Is this possible? For example: making a custom button that would appear upon a certain key combination, that could be clicked to access a document viewer, change the time, minimize a window, etc. Is there some way to access functionality to basic tasks / actions like this without using the default OS X button controls, and implementing them with my own GUI? I am talking about more than a simple theme change, I want to completely change the user experience. This means that this application would be run in a full screen mode that blocks out default OS X menu bars. I've heard something about using graphics architectures to plug in your own window manager? Would this be an option too? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thank you,

• pass Validation error to UI element in WPF?

  I am using IDataErrorInfo to validate my data in a form in WPF. I have the validation implemented in my presenter. The actual validation is happening, but the XAML that's supposed to update the UI and set the style isn't happening.   After much searching the answer seems to be no, but I thought I'd ask here before giving up. For a project I'm working on that includes recording sound, the input levels sound a little quiet both when the route is external mic + speaker and when it's headphone mic + headphones. Does anyone know definitively whether it is possible to programmatically change mic gain levels on the iPhone in any part of Core Audio? If not, is it possible that I'm not really in "speakerphone" mode (with the external mic at least) but only think I am? • Can't disable method parenthesis auto-complete in Eclipse

  I'm trying to disable the automatic closing of brackets in Eclipse, and while I've mostly succeeded, I can't stop the editor from inserting a closing parenthesis for a method call. The result is that when I type: myBool.equals(true); it inserts a closing parenthesis as soon as I type the opening parenthesis, and what I actually get is: myBool.equals(true);) I've disabled all of the auto-complete options in the Preferences - Java - Editor - Typing menu, as well as Preferences - Java - Editor - Content Assist - Fill method arguments and show guessed arguments. I also disabled the smart insert mode option under the Edit menu. Is there another option somewhere else I need to use to stop Eclipse from doing this? This is with Eclipse 3.5.2 (Build ID M20100211-1343) in case it matters. Edited to add: I should also mention that this only happens if I wait for the "intellisense" pop-up with suggested method names to appear after I type the period. If I just continuously type the code without waiting for the suggestion box to appear, the closing parenthesis doesn't get inserted.

• Why can't HTC Droid running OTA 2.1 communicate with RFCOMM?

  Yesterday we received OTA Android 2.1 on my wife's HTC Droid - HOORAY!!! I am finally able to load my carputer app on her phone. Well we loaded it, but it doesn't work. Specifically, it connects but sees no I/O!!! I paired, re-paired, and re-paired again, every time its the same problem: connect() says we connected successfully, but any attempt to send or receive data appears to work but no data ever arrives in the input buffer. The device I'm connecting to uses AT commands. ATI should respond with a device ID. That works fine when I run the app on my Moto Droid, but on the HTC droid, no data is ever present in the inputstream/buffer. Personally, I'm feeling pretty sure it's a bug or limitation in this release for the HTC (because the app works great on my Moto A855 Droid). Can anybody comment on the issue? • MySQL-python 1.2.3 and OS X 10.5: 64- or 32-bit?

  I've been happily using Django and MySQL in development on an existing machine running OS X 10.4 Tiger, and have set up a similar environment in 10.5 Leopard on a new 64-bit MacBook, with a working MySQL and Python 2.6.4. However, now I want them to communicate, easy_install MySQL-python gave ld warnings that the file is not of the required architecture, which led me to test my Python 2.4.6 install (from the Mac OS X disc image): >>> import sys >>> sys.maxint 2147483647 Ah. So my Python install appears to be 32-bit and (I think?) won't install MySQL-python for my 64-bit MySQL. There are lots of hacks out there for MySQL-python on OS X (mostly 1.2.2), but - after hours of reading - I'm pretty sure they won't fix this architecture mismatch. So I'm stuck because I can't decide whether to: give up, remove the 64-bit MySQL install (thorough methods, please?) and use the 32-bit MySQL disc image instead; re-install Python in 64-bit mode from the tarball, --with-universal archs-64-bit and --enable-universalsdk= as detailed in Python.org's 2.6 news. So my questions for anyone who has encountered this issue are: Is installing 64-bit Python on OS X 10.5 worth bothering with? If so, (naive, lazy question!) how are the two required arguments combined? If I just skip along in 32-bit (as on my working setup) what am I missing? I'm after a hassle-free install that's easy to reproduce on other machines (possible student use) so I'd really welcome your opinions, please!

Is there a cleaner way to implement this sort of 'only when in production mode' without loading up the domain class?

• Using custom coordinates with QGraphicsScene

  I am experimenting with a WYSIWYG editor that allows a user to draw shapes on a page and the Qt graphics scene support seems perfect for this. However, instead of working in pixels I want all my QGraphicsItem objects to work in tenths of a millimetre but I don't know how to achieve this. For example: // Create a scene that is the size if an A4 page (2100 = 21cm, 2970 = 29.7cm) QGraphicsScene* scene = new QGraphicsScene(0, 0, 2100, 2970); // Add a rectangle located 1cm across, 1cm down, 5cm wide and 2cm high QGraphicsItem* item = scene->addRect(100, 100, 500, 200); ... QGraphicsView* view = new QGraphicsView(scene); setCentralWidget(view); Now, when I display the scene above I want the shapes to appear at correct size for the screen DPI. Is this simply a case of using QGraphicsView::scale or do I have to do something more complicated? Note that if I was using a custom QWidget instead then I would use QPainter::setWindow and QPainter::setViewport to create a custom mapping mode but I can't see how to do this using the graphics scene support.

• Running directx SDK samples on a Windows Mobile 6.1 device

  I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on a Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because of a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync (I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device application and running it works). When I try to run a directx sample application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set... What I do is: Connect the Mobile device to the PC, Open Visual Studio 2008, Open a directx sample project, Click Run (in Debug or Release mode).

• My simple program runs on Android emulator, but not on my Nexus One

  To clarify, I have no trouble getting the Nexus One connected in developer's mode. I can actually get Eclipse to "run" my program on my Nexus One. However, my Nexus One simply gets stuck in a reboot loop. I've also created an .apk file and put it onto my Nexus One, installing it with apkInstaller. However, it crashed while installing. I see my app on my phone, but I'm kind of afraid to run it. I am not doing anything fancy in my program; all it does is generate text by shuffling a couple arrays of strings together. It uses a bunch of text views, two buttons, and a spinner. I have only edited the main source file, the strings XML file, and the layout XML file, nothing else. It's a 2.1-update1 program and it runs fine on the emulator. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm using Windows 7 (32 bit) and my Nexus One is running Cyanogen 5.0.7.1. I'm pretty sure it's my code that's causing the problem. Now I'm just wondering if there are any common mistakes that would lead my app to run on the emulator but not on my device. But calling the web service from PHP fails My very simple PHP call looks like this: $client = new SoapClient('http://localhost:8080/calculator?wsdl', array('trace' => 1)); echo 'Sum: '.$client->addValues(4, 5); But than I either get a "Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded..." or a "Uncaught SoapFault exception: [WSDL] SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: Couldn't load from 'http://localhost:8080/calculator?wsdl' ..." exception. I have tested the PHP SoapClient() with other web services and they work without any issues. Is there a known issue with JAX-WS RI in comibation with PHP, or is there an error in my web service I didn't see? I have found this bug report, but even updating to PHP 5.3.2 doesn't solved the problem. Can anyone tell me what to do? And by the way, my java version running on Windows 7 x64 is the following: java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode)

  I am building my first Silverlight 3 + RI Services application and need some help. It will be deployed in an controlled corporate intranet, 100% windows clients. I have started from the Silverlight Business Application template. These are my requirements: Upon launch the application needs to recognize the currently logged-in user. The application needs to have access to other properties of the user in AD, such as email, full name, and group membership. Group membership is used to grand certain features in the application. A "login as a different user" link is to be always available - Some machines are available throughout the enterprise, logged-in as a certain generic user (verified by the absence of certain membership groups). In this case one can enter credentials and log in (impersonate) to the application as a user different from the one already logged-into the machine. This user is to be used in service calls I have modified the following in the default Business Application template: App.xaml: appsvc:WindowsAuthentication instead of the default FormsAuthentication Web.config: authentication mode="Windows" With these modifications I resolve requirement #1 (get the currently logged-in user). But when I examine RiaContext.Current.User, I don't have access to other properties from AD, such as group memberships. How can I achieve my other requirements? Thanks for your help.

• Get an Arduino and Android phone to communicate over the web

  I am writing an Android application to communicate with my Arduino over the web. The Arduino is running a web server through an Ethernet shield. I am attaching my code, but I will explain it here so you will understand what I am trying to do. The Android sends an HTTP request in the format http://192.168.1.148/?Lights=1. The Arduino gets the request, executes the command (in this case turning on some lights) and then responds to the Android device by simply sending the string "Lights=On". The Android will then change the color of the button to notify the user that the command was executed successfully. The Arduino is getting the instruction and executing it and sending the response but my button color is not changing. I know that the Android device is getting the string because I added a debug line to change the text on the button to the received response.   I'm having trouble disconnecting from a ftp-server, using the enterprisedt java ftp framework. I can simply not call disconnect() on a FileTransferClient object without getting an error. • ASP.NET MVC intermittent slow response

  Problem In our production environment, system occasionally delays the page response of an ASP.NET MVC application up to 30 seconds or so, even though same page renders in 2-3 seconds most of the times. This happens randomly with any arbitrary page, and GET or POST type requests. For example, log files indicates, system took 15 seconds to complete a request for jquery script file or for other small css file it took 10 secs. Similar Problems: Random Slow Downs Production Environment: Windows Server 2008 - Standard (32-bit) - App Pool running in integrated mode. ASP.NET MVC 1.0 We have tried followings/observations: Moved the application to a stand alone web server, but, it didn't help. We didn't ever notice same issue on the server for any 'ASP.NET' application. App Pool settings are fine. No abrupt recycles/shutdowns. No cpu spikes or memory problems. No delays due to SQL queries or so. It seems as something causing delay along HTTP Pipeline or worker processor seeing the request late. Looking for other suggestions. -- Thanks

  I have a wcf service consumed by a silverlight 3 control. The Silverlight client uses a basicHttpBindinging that is constructed at runtime from the control's initialization parameters like this: public static T GetServiceClient<T>(string serviceURL) { BasicHttpBinding binding = new BasicHttpBinding(Application.Current.Host.Source.Scheme.Equals("https", StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase) ? Calls were returning as expected until the result set increased to several thousand rows at which time HTTP 401.1 errors were received. The Service's HttpBinding defines closeTime, openTimeout, receiveTimeout and sendTimeOut of 10 minutes. If I limit the size of the resultset the call suceeds. Additional Observations from Fiddler: When Method2 is modified to return a smaller resultset (and avoid the problem), control initialization consists of 4 calls: Service1/Method1 -- result:401 Service1/Method1 -- result:401 (this time header includes element "Authorization: Negotiate TlRMTV..." Service1/Method1 -- result:200 Service1/Method2 -- result:200 (1.25 seconds) When Method2 is configured to return the larger resultset we get: Service1/Method1 -- result:401 Service1/Method1 -- result:401 (this time header includes element "Authorization: Negotiate TlRMTV..." Service1/Method1 -- result:200 Service1/Method2 -- result:401.1 (7.5 seconds) Service1/Method2 -- result:401.1 (15ms) Service1/Method2 -- result:401.1 (7.5 seconds)

I have to Search for the files with only .txt format in the current directory, count the number of cases of each different "Interface # nnnn" string in .txt file, where nnnn is a four or 32 digits max hexadecimal no and o/p of a table of Interface number against occurrence. I am facing implementation issues while writing a script i.e, Unable to implement the data structure like Linked List, Two Dimensional array. I am rewriting a script using multi dimension array (Pass values into the arrays in and out of procedure) in TCL to scan through the every .txt file and search for the the string/regular expression ‘Interface # ’ to count and display the number of occurrences. If someone could help me to complete this part will be much appreciated. Else add new element to the Interface Number list v) If there are no files return to the first directory My o/p is like follows Interface Frequency 123f 3 1232 4

  I'm trying to compile SoundTouch on Android. Android seems to have neither stdexcept nor stdlib. How can I get past this block of compiling SoundTouch? At a guess, there may be some flag I don't know about that I should use. I could refactor the code not to use stdexcept. There may be a way to pull in the original stdexcept source and reference that. I might be able to link to a precompiled stdexcept library.

• Getting an Android App to Show Up in the market for "Sony Internet TV"(Google TV)

  I'm having a bit of trouble getting my app to show up in the market under GoogleTV. • Entity Framework 4 and SYSUTCDATETIME ()

  Hi, I use EF4 and C#. I have a Table in my DataBase (MS SQL 2008) with a default value for a column SYSUTCDATETIME (). The Idea is to automatically add Date and Time as soon as a new record is Created. I create my Conceptual Model using EF4, and I have created an ASP.PAGE with a DetailsView Control in INSERT MODE. My problems: When I create a new Record. EF is not able to insert the actual Date and Time value but it inserts instead this value 0001-01-01 00:00:00.00. I suppose the EF is not able to use SYSUTCDATETIME () defined in my DataBase Any idea how to solve it?
