• When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

  I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark. • Win 7 (SP1) Creationg of System Image failure... seems absurd. (0x80780119)

  This question seems to keep coming up in Microsoft Answers. Unfortunately, it never seems to be solved... on Microsoft Answers. Hopefully someone here will have a better idea. I'm trying to create a system image. It's not working. I have just re-installed windows as of a few hours ago. I have an admittedly older Western Digital 148 GB USB portable HDD which is not just completely empty, but I even did a long format with the NTFS file system just to be sure. The reinstallation of windows and a couple of programs take up 40 GB (seen below) When I try to create a System Image onto the USB HDD, I am told that there is not enough room. Obviously, this is wrong. The screen captures show exactly the steps that are happening to lead me to 0x80780119. I haven't done anything but put on Windows 7 (32bit; SP1) and install some programs. I haven't even done anything with them. There's almost zero in the way of data, and I checked that yes, the HDD works to accept data, send data and work with data. I've used the drive successfully for a long, long time. What's going wrong?

• Error when attempting to do a differential or incremental backup of Exchange using ntbackup

  Hi folks, We're running Small Business Server 2003 here. I was reviewing our backup procedures lately and noticed in the ntbackup logs that the differential backups of Exchange were failing with the error: (SERVERNAME)\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. A quick search of google found this MS KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555613 However, both of the suggested fixes don't to apply to our problem. First solution is to make sure the backup media is formatted and has adequate space. Well, our backup target is a 1 TB external hard drive with about 600 gigs of free space. (A full backup of our Exchange DB is currently around 5 GB) The second suggested fix is to "perform a full backup before trying to do incremental". And again, that can't it because we are doing full backups twice a week. There are no errors in the application log, just entries for ntbackup starting and ending. I've also tested doing an differential & incremental backup onto the server's internal drive, which unsurprising still did not work. I could get around this problem by always doing a full backup of Exchange but I kind of like the idea of being space efficient with doing differential backups. Anyone got any ideas?

• BizTalk configuration broken following WCF hotfix installation

  I usually post over on StackOverflow, but thought this was probably better suited to ServerFault. Please migrate if I'm wrong! I am developing a WCF service and a BizTalk application on my workstation at the moment. As part of the WCF service, I had to install hotfix 971493 from Microsoft which updates some core WCF assemblies. Following installation of that hotfix, I am now experiencing severe issues in my existing BizTalk application. When I attempt to configure the properties of an existing WCF-Custom receive location, I get this error: Error loading properties (System.IO.FileLoadException) The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) If I click OK (the same error repeats four times) I eventually see the WCF-Custom properties dialog. However if I click on the various tabs, I continue to receive errors: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) (Microsoft.BizTalk.Adapter.Wcf.Admin) The WCF-Custom receive location was working yesterday, and I installed the hotfix this morning. I'm guessing these two are related, and that BizTalk somehow has a reference to the old WCF assemblies. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

  I've searched for an answer to this one and I haven't found one yet. How do i remove a single item from Windows' System tray? I'm targeting Windows XP. Edit: This is not about preventing items from starting up. I want the program to keep running, I just need another script/program to remove the first one's entry from system tray. Second Edit: One approach that I can think of is to try to hide the intended app by modifying registry keys. On several test machines I've found some registry entries that match the System tray information at HKEY_USERS\something-that-looks-like S-1-5-21-682003330-1563985344-725345543-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify with BalloonTip, IconStream and PastIconsStream containing systray information. The important one is IconStream. On other machines, these are found at hkey_classes_root/local/setting/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/TrayNotify I'm quite sure there's no danger in changing those specific registries, but I don't know how to write code for that. Can anyone help me with the code and with confirming if this has the desired effect of hiding the systray icon for an active program?

• Ctrl + 1 and Ctrl + 2 key combinations don't work

  I noticed back in August (when I got StarCraft 2) that the key combinations Ctrl + 1 and Ctrl + 2 didn't work. I thought this was weird because Ctrl + 3 and all the other combinations worked fine (including Shift + 1, etc), so I didn't think much of it; I just shrugged it off as a SC2 bug. Now, 4 months later, I decided to play a completely unrelated game--Dawn of War 2--and noticed the same thing: those two specific key combinations don't work. To make sure I wasn't going insane, I tried it in Chrome and a couple other applications, and alas, it didn't work. I remember playing strategy games over the summer before StarCraft 2 and it worked fine. Any idea as to what went wrong? My keyboard, a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 (I know, insert Microsoft joke here), is a little over a year old, so I'm going to assume it's not dying until proven otherwise. Things I've tried ActiveHotkeys says the key combination is not a global hotkey. Tried another keyboard--still doesn't work. The key combinations do work in a virtual machine (tried with both Windows and Ubuntu as guests).

  On our Citrix farm, I just found out that some sub-components are "Installed on 1st Use" (Advertised), which does play well on terminal servers. Not only that, but you also get a rather non-descriptive error message, when a document tried to use a component, which is "Installed on 1st Use" (described on Plan to deploy Office 2010 in a Remote Desktop Services environment): Microsoft Office cannot run this add-in. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning correctly. Please contact your system administrator. • Windows 7 hangs while loading desktop

  I am facing a weird problem. My computer hangs while loading the desktop, and only the background shows up; no icons or bars load. If I power the system on and off about 4-6 times, I may be able to use it normally. The desktop loads normally after rebooting or in safe mode; this only occurs when I start the system normally. I've tried several things to fix it, such as removing all start-up items, but it still doesn't solve the problem. What should I do? • How do I fix a custom Event Viewer Log that merges automatically with the Application log?

  I am trying to create a custom event log for a Windows Service on Windows Server 2003. I would like to name the custom log "(ML) Startup Commands". However, when I add a registry key with that name to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\, it adds a log but shows the exact same events that are in the Application log when looking in the event viewer. If I add a registry key with the name "(ML) Startup Commands 2" to the event log, it shows a blank event log as expected. In fact, any other name will work correctly except for the one I want. I have searched through the registry for other keys with the string "(ML)" and removed all other references to this key name, however I continue to get merged results in the viewer when I create a key with this name. My question is, how can I fix the server so I can create a custom event log with this name that shows only the events from my application, not the events from the default Application event log that is installed with Windows? Update: I rebooted the server and woudn't you know it, the log started acting normally. I got a strange error message in the Application log: The EventSystem sub system is suppressing duplicate event log entries for a duration of 86400 seconds. The suppression timeout can be controlled by a REG_DWORD value named SuppressDuplicateDuration under the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\EventLog. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I can only hope this error doesn't mean the problem will come back after 86400 seconds. I guess I will have to wait and see.

• How to make Exchange 2003 non-authoritive

  Background We are a small company with an internally hosted Exchange 2003. It receives email for 2 domains (the company was renamed a few years back). For the sake of argument, the domains are: oldname.com newname.com We have moved newname.com to a hosted exchange service, and our DNS record is correctly routing emails. Our internal server still receives email for oldname.com, although we have asked our hosting company to accept emails for that domain. Problem My problem is that emails generated internally from monitoring software, printer, etc. are being caught by our (defunct) internal server and being delivered to the old mailboxes. I believe that what is happening is that our internal exchange server considers itself to be the authoritive server for newname.com. I think it must be looking in active directory for a mailbox and delivering it internally without ever going outside. Attempt to fix I started to follow the article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321721. I removed the SMTP recipient policy for newname.com, and added a dummy address and made it primary. I also answered yes for updating the associated emails. I then restarted the Microsoft Exchange Routing System and SMTP, but emails are still being routed internally. Is there a way to force the exchange server to route all emails for the domain newname.com to the new hosted service?

• PostgreSQL failover cluster on Windows Server

  We are looking for advice on how to setup a basic failover cluster for our application: We will be using 4 machines running Microsoft Windows Server (most probably 2003). All four will always run our application, which is essentially a web service. Load balancing is "outsourced" - somebody else handles the distribution of the web requests among the servers. Only one of the servers will be running the PostgreSQL server actively at any given time. Another server (of the four) also has the DB installed, but is on standby/passive. The DB data is stored on shared storage. No copying data between servers. Reads are done very frequently by many end-users, and in rather small chunks of data. Writes are done much less frequently, by less users, and in very large bulks of data. Now, how can one configure Microsoft Cluster Service to keep only one instance of the DB server and 4 instances (1 per server) of our application at all times? And does PostgreSQL integrate neatly with MSCS at all? Update: Instead of keeping the data on shared storage, I also consider using log shipping to replicate data on a couple of DB servers. There are two issues with this option: Log shipping only makes sure that I have a second server that gets all of the data and is ready to take over. How do I implement the actual failure detection and failover switch? Switching back: Suppose the master fails and the system automatically fails over to the slave, and later the master comes back online. I understand that with WAL shipping this will require to reconfigure the log shipping once again, and that switching back is far from seamless. Is that so?

• IIS Manager - Connect to Another Server (Win7 to Win2008 server)

  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. If I open up IIS Manager, I see a list of "connections" on the left hand side. In previous versions, I would be able to select an option to "connect to another server" or "connect to another machine", but there is no such option visible anywhere here. The only thing in the list is my local machine. Even in the address bar, if I manually type in the server location (\servername, even tried just servername), nothing happens (it just reverts back to my current local computer) The documentation at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732466%28WS.10%29.aspx seems to imply the very same steps... but there is just no button or menu option anywhere to do this. Am I missing something? I'm not even seeing a grayed out menu option. EDIT: Under the "File" menu, I see 2 options: Save Connections (grayed out) Exit Under the "Connections" pane, I see 1 button, grayed out. When I hover the mouse, it simply says "Up", appears to be usable if I browse into an element in my local computers IIS settings If I right click inside the pane itself, I see Refresh Add website (to the current host) Start Stop Rename Switch to Content View UPDATE: I downloaded and installed the Remote Server Administration tools from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7D2F6AD7-656B-4313-A005-4E344E43997D&displaylang=en, and I enabled everything listed under "Remote Server Administration Tools" under "Turn Windows Features On or Off". Still nothing.

• After reinstallation, Disk Cleanup disappears when I click OK.

  After I reinstalled Windows 7, Disk Cleanup stopped working. I can start Disk Cleanup and select the drive to clean, but when I click on the OK button, the window disappears. Any solutions? But a new process - WerFault.exe appeared under svchost.exe a few seconds after i clicked the "OK" button. It disappeared, too, from the process list after some time (i think it disappeared along with cleanmgr.exe).

  Hello ServerFault! I need some serious help. I have a major database server down and am scratching my head at how to fix it. The server was hit by rolling black outs last week in Dallas and sense then, Microsoft SQL 2005 SP2 will not start up. I am getting the following errors (both when starting the service and while trying to execute mssqlsrv.exe -c -f -m: Event Type: Error Event Source: MSSQLSERVER Event ID: 913 Could not find database ID 3. Database may not be activated yet or may be in transition. Reissue the query once the database is available. If you do not think this error is due to a database that is transitioning its state and this error continues to occur, contact your primary support provider. Please have available for review the Microsoft SQL Server error log and any additional information relevant to the circumstances when the error occurred. and... Event Type: Information Event Source: MSSQLSERVER Event ID: 1814 Could not create tempdb. You may not have enough disk space available. Free additional disk space by deleting other files on the tempdb drive and then restart SQL Server. Check for additional errors in the event log that may indicate why the tempdb files could not be initialized. I have tried to rename the tempdb.mdf to tempdb.old with no success. I have checked and have 193 GB of free hard drive space. What else might cause this problem? Could the server need a chkdsk ran on it or do I need to be looking at some area of the database server? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  I am migrating a bunch of sites which each use an Access database (or whatever an MDB file is). If I try to load the site, I get the following error: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005' [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied If I rename the MDB file, I get a complaint that the file does not exist, which makes sense. If the file is named correctly, the site tries to load for about 30 seconds or so, and then just fails with the above message. During this waiting period, I can see a lock file being created (and then at some point removed). The MDB file and it's parent dir have full permissions granted to all users. Given that the lock file is successfully created and removed, I don't think that this is a "real" permission issue. The OS is Windows Server 2003 SP2. I am not sure about much more detail on it's config wrt Access databases. I also don't know what version it is expected to be.   Hi All: I've just run into an issue with my exchange OWA. It returns a blank page with the url string https://www.xxxxxxxx/&reason=0. Nothing in the logs gives me any good reasons. Here's what I've done so far; 1) reinstall Exchange roll-up 7. 2) recreate virtual directories. 3) reboot. (this was mostly a shot in the dark, but what the hell) Exchange via rpc/https is still working great. Anyone run into this before? • 2008 Sever Randomly reboots.

  I'm out of ideas here. We have a 2008 Server that keeps rebooting 2-3 times a day at completely random times with an "Unexpected Shutdown" event. There are no Dumps, no events leading to it just like it loses power then comes back online. I ran a Diagnostic of the power supply and it has had continuous power for months. In addition, the temperature of the processors are maxing out at 40 degrees Celsius. Anyone have any ideas how to figure out why this is restarting all the time? This is a DMZed Web server so it doesn't do too much process wise.   I have a Plesk 9.5 mail server (cm.snowbarre.co.za) on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS which forwards all SMTP traffic to an anti-spam server cacti.snowbarre.co.za. Many times I see the headers on the anti-spam server to contain from addresses not hosted on the mail server and I have checked and confirmed that my server is not an open relay server. • Can I replicate data between mySQL and SQL Server/SQL Azure?

  I have a replicated mySQL setup running happily on Amazon AWS, making user data available locally in various regions. Now I'm faced with an app that needs to go up on Microsoft Azure and I need to replicate the data over to there as well. So that's annoying. I am faced with several options: Replicate from mySQL to SQL Azure/SQL Server seems like it would be lovely - is this possible? I'd consider using a third party tool and paying $$ if I had to. We're not using anything complicated in the db feature set, it's just data in tables. Get mySQL working on Microsoft Azure - which seems really dicey at best. All the HOWTOs I can find say "this is possible but you really shouldn't try this for production apps." Go non-realtime and do syncs from mySQL to SQL Azure, which may be somewhat expensive and slower. Rip out all my mySQL on Amazon and use SQL Server there, which would make Baby Jesus cry. Has anyone gotten mySQL to SQL Azure/SQL Server replication or syncing working? Or have any other approaches (a NoSQL solution that replicates and might meet our but-we-need-to-join-some-tables needs that can easily be run on Amazon and Azure)?

• Disable XP disk check using FAT32

  Right now I'm using Windows XP and Macintosh on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp. Sometimes my XP would crash and when I restarted it it would have to go through disk check, although it says I can skip it by pushing a key, but this never worked for me. I did a bit of research online on how to disable disk check and found chkntfs /x c: but when I tried this out in my cmd it said the disk is FAT32 format. I tried to convert my C: drive from FAT32 to NTFS by using convert c: /FS:NTFS but when I tried this it told me to locate my C: drive. I tried to type C: and Bootcamp but couldn't really get past it. • Fresh Install of SQL Server 2008 doesn't install managment studio. Help!

  Ok I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I cleaned of SQL server 2005 completely off my system leaving only SQL Compact Edition. I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=01af61e6-2f63-4291-bcad-fd500f6027ff&displaylang=en and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1. After the install, under my start bar menu all i have for SQL configuration tools are the Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and the Install Center. I don't have the SQL Managment Studio. So I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en and downloaded the SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express but when I try to install it I get a warning says This program has known compatibility issues and that I need to Install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. I thought that is what I installed. So, I tried to continue running the install but I then get an error message that says Invoke or BeginInvoke can not be called on a Form before it is opened... How can I check if Service pack 1 is installed or not? What should I do?
