  Currently I'm using todoist.com as GTD manager. I'm almost satisfied with it. Is there any foss software, that could provide next features? 1. unlimited (at least 5) subtask levels 2. easy way to complete tasks (like in todoist) 3. easy to edit tasks 4. php based (as i want to host it on my server) 5. due dates (including recurring) 6. labels, colors, etc will be good, but not critical PS: i already checked several similar questions, including Which GTD tool/webservice do you recommend? But haven't found suitable software yet.

• From physics to Java programmer?

  I'm a physics phd with little actual programming experience. I've always liked programming and played around with Basic and Pascal (also VB and Delphi) as a teen, but the largest actual project I completed was an assignement for the introductory computer science class in university where I wrote a nice little program (about 1500 lines of pascal) to display functions of 2 variables in 3D. I've had also a couple other projects of a few hundred lines range, but during my phd I didn't have (or take) the time to program more (string theory is hard guys!), beside playing around with ruby. Now I've decided that I'm more interested in programming than in physics and started to learn Java (hoping to pass the certification exam next week) and OO design. Still, I have trouble deciding on what to focus next (Java EE? Web development? algorithms and C programming?) in order to maximize my employement chances. Bear in mind that I'm aiming (mostly) at the swedish job market and that I'm 30 years old. So for the questions: Do you think that I have any chances to start and make a career in IT and programming coming from physics? What would be the best strategy to maximize my value in the field? Do you have suggestions as to where my physics background might be useful?

• 2 year degree plus experience vs 4 year degree

  Alright, I have searched around a bit on this site and found two somewhat similar questions: Computer Science Programming Certificate vs. Computer Science Degree? Is it possible/likely to be paid fairly without a college degree? But these do not provide an answer specifically to what I am seeking. I have my 2 year A.A.S. Degree in computer programming, along with a networking certificate from a technical college. I also have been working at a small educational game development company for 3 years now in various positions, but steadily moving up and now as a lead programmer on a few projects. Some of the higher programmers I work with claim that no matter how much experience I develop it still will not mean as much as someone with a 4 year degree. Their argument is that most employers will look over my resume because of the common '4 yr' minimum requirement. I have also heard people state (not as many though) that experience is everything and that an employer would rather have someone that has worked in the field instead of a rookie fresh out of college. I have heard both sides of this argument, but am looking for a general consensus, or more arguments from both sides from the people who have been there, or are there.

• So are we ever getting the technological singularity

  I´m still waiting for an AI robot that will pass the Turing test. I keep going back to http://www.a-i.com/ and nothing. I don´t know much about AI but, did anyone ever tried to make a genetic algorithm whose evolution algorithm itself evolves? Or how about one whose algorithm that makes the genetic algorithm evolve, evolves? Or one whose genetic algorithm that makes the genetic algorithm that makes the genetic algorithm evolve, evolves? Or how about an algorithm that abstracts all this into a potentially infinitely deep tree of genetic evolution algorithms? Aren´t we just failing as programmers? And I don´t think we can blame the processors speed. If you make and application that simulates consciousness you will get a Nobel prize no matter how many hours it takes to respond to your questions. But nobody did it. It almost reminds me to Randi´s $1000000 paranormal challenge. As I keep going back to AI chat bots, they keep getting better at changing the subject on a way that seems natural. But if I tell them something like "if 'x' is 2 then whats two times 'x'?" then they don't have a clue what I'm talking about. And I don't think they need a whole human brain simulation to be able to answer to something like that. They don't need feelings or perception. This is just language and logics. I don't think my perception of the color red gives me the ability to understand that if 'x' is 2 then two times 'x' is 4. I'm sure we are just missing some elemental principle we cannot grasp because it's probably stuck behind our eyes. What do you think?

• Can a company use VPN to spy on me?

  I'm about to work with a company on a development project, but they first need to set up a pretty complicated environment, and suggested they use VPN to work on my machine to do this. Should I be concerned that somebody can just watch me work? It would be embarrassing, if somebody could witness my work habits (e.g. Asking questions on SO and researching all day is part of my daily work regiment, and makes me feel like a noob, but it keeps me sharp. I also listen to conspiracy videos all day, and RadioLab podcasts, :). Is VPN going to introduce this possibility, and if so, is there a way around it? EDIT: Also, is there a way I can always tell when somebody is VPNed into my computer?

  Yes you are reading it right. Having announced just last week the general availability of our OEPE release 12.1.1.1.1 which includes support for developing applications to the Oracle Cloud. Today we are happy to announce the release of OEPE 12c (12.1.1.2) which includes various improvements for Webservices policies and security, and new features for implementing ADF applications in Eclipse Juno (3.8.1 and 4.2.1) as well as, bug fixes for other areas of the product - all of the above on top of Oracle Cloud support from the previous release. Many of the new features on this release have been added based on the feedback that we got from the ADF community, so, many thanks to you all and please, keep them coming! • Can someone explain the "use-cases" for the default munin graphs?

  When installing munin, it activates a default set of plugins (at least on ubuntu). Alternatively, you can simply run munin-node-configure to figure out which plugins are supported on your system. Most of these plugins plot straight-forward data. My question is not to explain the nature of the data (well... maybe for some) but what is it that you look for in these graphs? It is easy to install munin and see fancy graphs. But having the graphs and not being able to "read" them renders them totally useless. I am going to list standard plugins which are enabled by default on my system. So it's going to be a long list. For completeness, I am also going to list plugins which I think to understand and give a short explanation as to what I think it's used for. Pleas correct if I am wrong with any of them. So let me split this questions in three parts: Plugins where I don't even understand the data Plugins where I understand the data but don't know what I should look out for Plugins which I think to understand Plugins where I don't even understand the data These may contain questions that are not necessarily aimed at munin alone. Not understanding the data usually mean a gap in fundamental knowledge on operating systems/hardware.... ;) Feel free to respond with a "giyf" answer. These are plugins where I can only guess what's going on... I hardly want to look at these "guessing"... Disk IOs per device (IOs/second)What's an IO. I know it stands for input/output. But that's as far as it goes. Disk latency per device (Average IO wait)Not a clue what an "IO wait" is... IO Service TimeThis one is a huge mess, and it's near impossible to see something in the graph at all. Plugins where I understand the data but don't know what I should look out for IOStat (blocks/second read/written)I assume, the thing to look out for in here are spikes? Which would mean that the device is in heavy use? Available entropy (bytes)I assume that this is important for random number generation? Why would I graph this? So far the value has always been near constant. VMStat (running/I/O sleep processes)What's the difference between this one and the "processes" graph? Both show running/sleeping processes, whereas the "Processes" graph seems to have more details. Disk throughput per device (bytes/second read/written) What's thedifference between this one and the "IOStat" graph? inode table usageWhat should I look for in this graph? Plugins which I think to understand I'll be guessing some things here... correct me if I am wrong. Disk usage in percent (percent)How much disk space is used/remaining. As this is approaching 100%, you should consider cleaning up or extend the partition. This is extremely important for the root partition. Firewall Throughput (packets/second)The number of packets passing through the firewall. If this is spiking for a longer period of time, it could be a sign of a DOS attack (or we are simply recieving a large file). It can also give you an idea about your firewall performance. If it's levelling out and you need more "power" you should consider load balancing. If it's levelling out and see a correlation with your CPU load, it could also mean that your hardware is not fast enough. Correlations with disk usage could point to excessive LOG targets in you FW config. eth0 errors (packets in/out)Network errors. If this value is increasing, it could be a sign of faulty hardware. eth0 traffic (bits/second in/out)Raw network traffic. This should correlate with Firewall throughput. number of threadsAn ever-increasing value might point to a process not properly closing threads. Investigate! processesBreakdown of active processes (including sleeping). A quick spike in here might point to a fork-bomb. A slowly, but ever-increasing value might point to an application spawning sub-processes but not properly closing them. Investigate using ps faux. process priorityThis shows the distribution of process priorities. Having only high-priority processes is not of much use. Consider de-prioritizing some. cpu usageFairly straight-forward. If this is spiking, you may have an attack going on, or a process is hogging the CPU. Idf it's slowly increasing and approaching max in normal operations, you should consider upgrading your hardware (or load-balancing). file table usageNumber of actively open files. If this is reaching max, you may have a process opening, but not properly releasing files. load averageShows an summarized value for the system load. Should correlate with CPU usage. Increasing values can come from a number of sources. Look for correlations with other graphs. memory usageA graphical representation of you memory. As long as you have a lot of unused+cache+buffers you are fine. swap in/outShows the activity on your swap partition. This should always be 0. If you see activity on this, you should add more memory to your machine!

• WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files in CleanMgr(Disk Cleanup)

  When I run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) on my work PC (running WinXP), it claims to see 778,520 K of WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files Although I do check that field, the number never drops. I've manually scanned through all possible temp folders on the drive and don't see anyplace hiding 760 MB of temp files, which makes me wonder whether those files merely exist in some list (registry or INI) somewhere but don't actually exist on the drive. So, my questions are: 1. Where on the drive might those WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files be 2. Where does cleanmgr.exe look to determine how much disk space is used by WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files Thanks in advance.

• How many of you *really* surf around without JavaScript enabled? [closed]

  I've decided to rephrase the question. After some deliberation on Meta, I've realized that my question needs to be a bit more focused. The question: Should we (web developers) continue to spend effort progressively enhancing our web applications with JavaScript, ensuring that features gracefully degrade, thereby ensuring accessibility? Or should we spend that time focused on new features or other areas of development? The subtext of that question would be: How many of our customers/clients/users utilize our websites or applications with JavaScript disabled? Do you have any projects with requirements that specifically demand JavaScript functionality (almost all of mine do), and do those requirements also demand graceful degradation? For the sake of asking this question, I pulled up programmers.stackexchange.com without JavaScript enabled, and I was greeted with this message: "Programmers - Stack Exchange works best with JavaScript enabled". It was difficult to log in, albeit the site seemed to generally work okay. (I wasn't able to vote up any questions.) I think this is a satisfactory approach to development. Imagine the effort involved in making all of the site's features work with plain old HTML and server-side logic. OTOH, I wonder how many users have been alienated by this approach. We've all been trained (at least the good developers among us) to use progressive enhancement and to ensure our web applications' dynamic features degrade gracefully. Is this progressive enhancement just pissing into the wind, or do some of our customers actually utilize certain web services without JavaScript enabled? I mean, like really, not figuratively or presumptuously.

• PHP5 without PHP4 compatibility

  This is the opposite question of this one. My purpose is that there is no need when you write only PHP5 code to have PHP4 compatibility. It is not helpful at all and due to differences between object models in those two version, it must be penalizing on interpreter performances (or am I wrong ?). So my questions are : is it possible to recompile PHP5 without retrocompatibility with PHP4 or to disable it in any other way to gain performances ? if it is not possible, is there a project somewhere which aim that goal ?

Reducing CXPACKET Wait Stats for High Transactional Database The subject is very complex and I have done my best to simplify the concept. In simpler words, when a parallel operation is created for SQL Query, there are multiple threads for a single query. Each query deals with a different set of the data (or rows). Due to some reasons, one or more of the threads lag behind, creating the CXPACKET Wait Stat. Threads which came first have to wait for the slower thread to finish. The Wait by a specific completed thread is called CXPACKET Wait Stat. Information Related to DATETIME and DATETIME2 There are quite a lot of confusion with DATETIME and DATETIME2. DATETIME2 is also one of the underutilized datatype of SQL Server.  In this blog post I have written a follow up of the my earlier datetime series where I clarify a few of the concepts related to datetime. Difference Between GETDATE and SYSDATETIME Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 – WITH GETDATE Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 2011 Introduction to CUME_DIST – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical function CUME_DIST(). This function returns first and last value from the list. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I’d like to attempt to explain its function through a brief example. Instead of creating a new table, I will be using the AdventureWorks sample database as most developers use that for experiment purposes. OVER clause with FIRST _VALUE and LAST_VALUE – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 – ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING “Don’t you think there is bug in your first example where FIRST_VALUE is remain same but the LAST_VALUE is changing every line. I think the LAST_VALUE should be the highest value in the windows or set of result.” Puzzle – Functions FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE with OVER clause and ORDER BY You can see that row number 2, 3, 4, and 5 has same SalesOrderID = 43667. The FIRST_VALUE is 78 and LAST_VALUE is 77. Now if these function was working on maximum and minimum value they should have given answer as 77 and 80 respectively instead of 78 and 77. Also the value of FIRST_VALUE is greater than LAST_VALUE 77. Why? Explain in detail. Introduction to LEAD and LAG – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012 SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical function LEAD() and LAG(). This functions accesses data from a subsequent row (for lead) and previous row (for lag) in the same result set without the use of a self-join . It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I will attempt small example to explain you this function.   ok so i'm working through a tutorial to get rvm installed on my mac. the bash command to get rvm via curl is curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable i understand the first half's curl command at location rvm.io, and that the result is piped to the subsequent bash command, but i'm not sure what that command is doing. My questions: -s : im always confused about how to refer to these. what type of thing is this: a command line argument? a switch? something else? -s : what is it doing? i have googled for about half an hour but not sure how to refer to it makes it difficult. stable : what is this? tl;dr : help me decipher the command bash -s stable to those answering this post, i aspire to one day be as bash literate as you. until then, opstards such as myself thank you for the help!

• Dock with dual external DVI monitors with Intel + Nvidia Optimus?

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop plugged into a docking station, and the dock has 2 monitors (connected with DVI). Also note that I've installed Ubuntu alongside (dual-boot) Windows 7. I can't get the dual monitors to work both on Ubuntu (either 11.10 or 12.04) and Windows 7. When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF108 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) If I then reboot and uncheck Optimus setting in the BIOS during reboot, I'm able to get the dual monitors to work in Ubuntu 12.04 (but I need to configure them every boot in Nvidia Settings). When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) But then if I reboot into Windows (leaving the Optimus unchecked), Windows can't detect external monitors, and the resolution is unacceptably low. I've seen on many forum posts that this particular graphics card setup causes lots of headaches. I haven't been able to resolve my problem yet. How can I use my external display on my laptop with intel and nvidia video cards? How to use external displays with Intel driver on a NVidia/Intel hybrid system nVidia Optimus , Unity 3D and Dual Monitors "Just use VGA instead of DVI" isn't an option because my dock has only 1 VGA port (and 2 DVI). Switching the BIOS setting on every reboot and then reconfiguring the display settings every time is tedious, time-consuming, and impractical. Do you know how to make this work smoothly? • Good Laptop .NET Developer VM Setup

  I was torn between putting this question on this site or SuperUsers. I've tried to do a good bit of searching on this, and while I find plenty of info on why to go with a VM or not, there isn't much practical advise on HOW to best set things up. Here's what I currently HAVE: HP EliteBook 1540, quad-core, 8GB memory, 500GB 7200 RPM HD, eSATA port. Descent machine. Should work just fine. Windows 7 64-bit Host OS. This also acts as my day-to-day basic stuff (email, Word Docs, etc...) OS. VMWare Desktop Windows 7 64-bit Guest OS with all my .NET dev tools, frameworks, etc loaded on it. It's configured to use 2 cores and up to 6GB of memory. I figure that the dev env will need more than email, word, etc... So, this seemed like a good option to me, but I find with the VM running, things tend to slow down all around on both the host and guest OS. Memory and CPU utilization don't seem to be an issue, but I/O does. I tried running the VM on an external eSATA drive, figuring that the extra channel might pick up the slack. Things only got worse (could be my eSATA enclosure). So, for all of that I have basically two questions in one. Has anyone used this sort of setup and are there any gotchas either around the VMWare configuration or anything else I may have missed here that you can point me to? Is there another option that might work better? For example, I've considered trying a lighter weight Host OS and run both of my environments as VMs? I tried this with Server 2008 Hyper-V, but I lose too much laptop functionality going this route, so I never completed setup. I'm not averse to Linux as a host OS, though I'm no Linux expert. If I'm missing any critical info, feel free to ask. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

• Sitemap structure for network of subdomains

  I am working on a project that's a network of 2 domains (domain.gr & domain.com.cy) of subdomains similar to Hubpages [each user gets a profile under a different subdomain & there is a personal blog for that user as well] and I think there is something wrong with our sitemap submission. Sometimes it takes weeks in order a new profiles to get indexed. We make use of one Webmasters account in order to manage all network and we don't want to create different accounts for each subdomain since there are more than 1000 already. According to this post http://goo.gl/KjMCjN, I end up on a structure of 5 sitemaps with the following structure : 1st sitemap will be for indexing the others. 2nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.gr 3nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.com.cy 4th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.gr - news sitemap http://goo.gl/8A8S9f 5th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.com.cy - news sitemap again Now my questions: Should we create news sitemaps or just list all post in 2nd & 3rd sitemap? Does links ordering has anything to do? Eg: Most recent user created be first in sitemap or doesn't make any different and we just need to make sure that lastmod date is correct? Does anyone guess how Hubpages submit their sitemap in Webmasters so maybe we could follow there way? Any alternative or better way to index this kind of schema? PS: Our network is multi language - Greek & English are available. We make use of hreflang tags on the head of each page to separate country target of each version.

  Hello, I'm Sophia. I have an interest in self-learning either Python, or Ruby. The primary reason for my interest is to make my life more stable by having freelance work = $. It seems that programming offers a way for me to escape my condition of poverty (I'm on the edge of homelessness right now) while at the same time making it possible for me to go to uni. I intend on being a math/philosophy major. I have messed with Python a little bit in the past, but it didn't click super well. The people who say I should choose Python say as much because it is considered a good first language/teaching language, and that it is general-purpose. The people who say I should choose Ruby point out that I'm a very right-brained thinker, and having multiple ways to do something will make it much easier for me to write good code. So, basically, I'm starting this thread as a dialog with people who know more than I do, as an attempt to make the decision. :-) I've thought about asking this in stackoverflow, but they're much more strict about closing threads than here, and I'm sort of worried my thread will be closed. :/ TL;DR Python or Ruby for freelance work opportunities ($) as a first language? Additional question (if anyone cares to answer): I have a personal feeling that if I devote myself to learning, I'd be worth hiring for a project in about 8 weeks of work. I base this on a conservative estimate of my intellectual capacities, as well as possessing motivation to improve my life.   Following I will ask a few specific questions but I will set the stage first. My goal is to monitor Applications in a very odd place - between the OS and a Hypervisor. If you have comments about this probably unachievable goal please do educate me. One good advice or link can save me days of work. Now to my current attempt. I installed on WinXP a VirtualBox (being open-source) and got a guest OS of latest Ubuntu running within. Where should I go next? • PowerChute for VMware ESX4

  Hi, I am looking for a free way of installing PowerChute for VMWare. The 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 Linux versions do not support VMWare ESX even though I think prior versions did. APC is now charging $100 for the install CD which I think is a joke considering the price of our Symmetra UPS. VMWare support should be free. Edit: I see someone voted this question to be closed, so to be clear i am looking for a free and legal way of getting PowerChute support for VMWare, by either using an older version or a custom script. • Failure to create keytab file using msktutil on Centos to W2K8

  I'm trying to setup a centos 5.5 squid server to authenticate against a windows 2008 DC. When I run the command: (Obviously changed for my enviroment) # msktutil -c -b "CN=COMPUTERS" -s HTTP/centos.dom.local -h centos.dom.local -k /etc/HTTP.keytab --computer-name centos-http --upn HTTP/centos.dom.local --server server.dom.local --verbose --enctypes 28 I get the following error (The whole message is too long to post here): Error: Unable to set machine password for centos: (3) Authentication error Error: set_password failed kinit works fine and the computer is added to the DC under COMPUTERS and SRV records created except no keytab is created.

  There are many things to learn in web development. You can easily find what are the most important thing that you need to learn if you want to be a webmaster. Answer to questions about how to become a web developer or a webmaster only contained limited items that someone need to master. (Some eg - a, b ) But the problem is that these resources are not complete. When I started learning web development i follow the same steps. But after learning the basic development I didn't know that I have learnt nothing, there are many more things to learn. I realized this by following blogs , Q&A sites. When I first downloaded the HTNL% Boilerplate, the issue that they have covered, some of them I haven't even heard about. I want you to just suggest what are the possible things, issues that someone can learn and why to learn. I know the answer is follow blogs and do your work you will learn with time, but with these platforms I could get some benefit out of other experiences. This question is not how to become a webmaster, but answer to this may also cover that too.
