  • Advantages / disadvantages of having DynDNS access on a computer vs the router

    - by Margaret
I have a shiny new toy, a Cisco Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN (WRVS4400N). While looking through the instruction manual, I discovered that it had support for DynDNS built-in. We've currently got the DynDNS client running on one of the servers (that people SSH to, as documented in this question); but the reason for the router update is to move away from SSH to VPN. To that end, is there any difference in behaviour/functionality/maintainability to run it off the computer, as opposed to the router? Thus far, DynDNS has more or less a set-and-forget setup, but since the feature was there, I wanted to know if it was a better location for the process...

  • Snow Leopard: Optimization

    - by Shyam
Hi, I have bunch of questions: I have a Mac network, which has five Mac's. Right now, they are individually getting software updates. Is there a way to download the patches/security updates in a single place (repository) and point all machines to this location? Personally, I have tools like Monolingual and Onyx, but are there tools you could recommend that affect the performance of the Operating System positively? Tweaks would be nice. Links and pointers, would be really appreciated. I've read about Time machine, is there a way to backup all machines to a network drive using this tool? Thanks!

My questions: -s : im always confused about how to refer to these. what type of thing is this: a command line argument? a switch? something else? -s : what is it doing? i have googled for about half an hour but not sure how to refer to it makes it difficult. stable : what is this? tl;dr : help me decipher the command bash -s stable to those answering this post, i aspire to one day be as bash literate as you. until then, opstards such as myself thank you for the help!

  • SNMPD - passing values in a trap

    - by ethrbunny
Im trying to create an SNMP setup to monitor 500-1K machines. Each will be joined to the SNMPTRAPD server via a VPN. When the client system sends its messages, it's sending its internal address instead of the VPN address even though the 'trapsync' command is using the VPN. This will be a problem as many of these system will have DHCP addresses based on location so there will be overlap. What I'd like to figure out is how to pass extra values with the trap so I can identify which system a given trap comes from.

  • Virtual box - How to add disks and move var, opt and home to them?

    - by Jarrod Roberson
I created a CentOS 5.6 Guest OS Virtual Machine. I made the first disk 10GB, I am rapidly outgrowing it. It was suggested that I make disks for my /var, /opt and /home directories and move them so I can better manage the disks for backing up and what not. This sounds like a good idea. I know how to create the disks in Virtual Box. I have dug around Google and the internet in general and all my attempts at doing this have failed. Snapshots are awesome! I can get the drives fdisked, and I have had limited success mounting them to /mnt/var, /mnt/home and /mnt/opt, but even in single user mode ( init 1 ) I can't get the entire contents of the directories to move over, and then the machine won't reboot correctly. cd /var cp * -ax /mnt/var The /var directory in particular is not wanting to move everything to the new location. How do I format, mount and move the /var, /opt and /home to my new disks?

  • How can I make all GTK+ apps on Windows pick up themes from the same folder?

    - by Mussnoon
I have several GTK+ apps installed (pidgin, GIMP, KeepNote et al) and I also have GTK2 themes installed separately in one location. However, picking/selecting a theme from the GTK+ theme selector does not make all the apps use that theme unless I copy and paste all the themes (or at least the one I selected) manually to the "themes" folder for each app (even that doesn't work at times - for KeepNote, for instance). This gets rather tedious and is also a waste of space. Isn't there a way to make all GTK+ apps use the same folder for themes? If yes, how?

  • Is it possible to run Modern UI Apps in Windows 7

    - by soandos
It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run Windows 8 (Modern Apps) in Windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?

  • Software for scanning installation process?

    - by no name
I forgot what is the name of the very good software which make some kind of restore point (save registry, and program files folder, etc...) before installing any software. After you install some program (ie "Notepad++") you can easily see what registry data use new installed program, on what location are the file's is stored and many more. The reason that I'm asking for help is that I have to automate some installation of public software, so after installation I need to uninstall it, so i have to delete all junk files. The software is called something like install wizard, or wizard install I forgot. If you have any idea of other application that do same thing , or you know exactly name of that software, or you have some good idea how to solve easy solve many installation and uninstallation, please let me know. • tag structured Filesystems

    - by A.Rashad
I hope this is the correct site, I lose my way between the 4 sister sites :) Let me ask the question this way. all file systems I have seen before are hierarchical, that means a root directory, with some branched directories, and so on until we have files residing in these directories. except for AS/400 file structure, where it has a concept of a Library that serve somehow as a directory but one level only. Why not have directory-less filesystems where files are placed in a single location, but the file identifiers would be referenced by a database of tag/ file relation ships. This way there will be no need for symbolic links, one file may have multiple relations to multiple subjects, not only a single parent directory to contain. I hope the idea is clear.

  • How can I do an "insert" statement from MS SQL -> MYSQL using linked servers

    - by bvandrunen
Is it possible to do an "insert" statement through linked servers. I know it is possible by using MSDTC...but does this work between MS SQL and MYSQL? Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Commercial version of Freenet6

    - by grnbeagle
I've been using Freenet6 from gogoNET to make my mobile device publicly accessible via IPv6. It works quite well except that the service is not as stable because it's non-commercial usage only as their servers are hosted for free by different operators around the world. Apparently gogoNET sells hardware called gogoSERVER which allows one to build a service similar to Freenet6. I've inquired their sales team, but they were unable to tell me which companies have a commercial, production-quality implementation of Freenet6. Specifically I'm looking for the following features in IPv6 service provider: Client-based IPv6 connectivity for mobile devices: gogoCLIENT (gw6c) is ideal for mobile devices since it allows a device to go online regardless of the device's location. API for account maintenance: so that we can create device accounts from our software Static IPv6 address: (or maybe I mean IPv4 address) by this I mean, just like gogoNET6 service (username.broker.freenet6.net), we want to provide our users with a permanent URL for their device Any info on commercial IPv6 service provider utilizing gogoSERVER is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Bash script for mysql backup - error handling

    - by Jure1873
I'm trying to backup a bunch of MyISAM tables in a way that would allow me to rsync/rdiff the backup directory to a remote location. I've came up with a script that dumps only the recently changed tables and sets the date of the file so that rsync can pick up only the changed ones, but now I don't know how to do the error handling - I would like the script to exit with a non 0 value if there are errors. How could I do that? #/bin/bash BKPDIR="/var/backups/db-mysql" mkdir -p $BKPDIR ERRORS=0 FIELDS="TABLE_SCHEMA, TABLE_NAME, UPDATE_TIME" W_COND="UPDATE_TIME >= DATE_ADD(CURDATE(), INTERVAL -2 DAY) AND TABLE_SCHEMA<>'information_schema'" mysql --skip-column-names -e "SELECT $FIELDS FROM information_schema.tables WHERE $W_COND;" | while read db table tstamp; do echo "DB: $db: TABLE: $table: ($tstamp)" mysqldump $db $table | gzip > $BKPDIR/$db-$table.sql.gz touch -d "$tstamp" $BKPDIR/$db-$table.sql.gz done exit $ERRORS

  • HP Photosmart 7450 Prints Noise On Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

    - by David Mackintosh
I have received a working (in its last location) HP Photosmart 7450 printer. I connected it up to my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit workstation, and the driver was (apparently) installed. The problem is that whenever I try to print from it -- test page, text from notepad, picture, whatever -- it spins through a half dozen sheets of paper, some of which have fractions of text on them, but most of which are either blank or have line noise printed on them. Noise similar to what was printed out on ye olde laserjet printers when the postscript interpreter failed. HP's web site only has a "use the included driver in Windows 7, be happy" instruction. The driver has been removed and added several times. The printer was previously attached to a XP Home computer and worked correctly without incident. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting before I drop this printer in the river?

  • IMAP/POP won't send allow emails to outside- New Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011

    - by user779887
I have a brand new out of the box Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011. Our employees at our remote offices can't send emails to recipients outside of our own domain. The workstations at the same location as the server aren't having any problem. I would at this time like to say "Thanks a lot" to the super-minds at Microsoft for protecting our email server from rogue computers attempting to send fake emails. (Silly me I thought proper login and password conventions would handle that.) I know this is something dealing with relaying but thus far nothing from any posts I've read have changed anything. Honestly, if someone is crafty enough to guess one of our login/password combos, let them send emails through our server I don't care!

  • Ubuntu + latest samba version, symlinks no longer work on share mounted in windows

    - by Roy Rico
I just apt-getted (apt-got?) the latest software for my Ubuntu 9.10 linux box, and I noticed that samba was the included in the update. After the install, the symlinks in my home directory no longer work when mounted as a drive in my linux box. They worked literally seconds before I did the update. All my normal directories work just fine. Viewing the directory listing on the command line, all the files, dirs & links have the exact same permissions, yet this is the error I get: Location is not available L:\LinkDir is not accessible. Access is denied. I looked on the forums, and i saw this option for the smb.conf follow symlinks = yes wide symlinks = yes unix extensions = no I put those in, but they had no effect. Has anyone had this problem yet?

  • Command-line HTTP crawler for Windows?

    - by Pekka
Would somebody have a recommendation for a web site crawler that can be invoked and equipped with settings from the command line? This would need to run in a Windows environment. Saving the data, following stylesheet links etc. is not an issue. I only need the crawler to start with a page, parse it, and follow all the links on the same domain so that in the end, all pages on the site have been requested once. Background: I'm setting up a web site that gets frequently uploaded from an office location. Combining data from various sources, it has several levels of caching. I don't want the first user to visit the site after a fresh upload to have to wait until the page has been generated and saved in the cache.

  • KVM Guest not reachable from host

    - by Paul
Hello, I'm running Ubuntu server 9.10, installed KVM etc. Created the bridge network following instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Created a windows 2008 guest using virt-install command line (using virt-manager GUI from a remote Ubuntu desktop would not let me select the ISO location). I can however use a remote virt-manager to connect to the guest and complete the windows install. Within windows 2008 I changed the IP address but cannot ping from outside world. The bridge network appears fine - I'm not sure what else to look at! Here is the interfaces file: The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 60.234.64.50 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 60.234.0.0 broadcast 60.234.0.255 gateway 60.234.64.49 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.12.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.12.255 The ip of the windows server is 60.234.64.52 What else should I check? • What is the standard place for static library files on Unix/Ubuntu

    - by Max
Hi, I am trying to install a library manually, well actually just put it in a sensible location preferably in my LIB path. I have a lib[...].a file and a bunch of headers pertaining to that static library file. If I look under /usr/lib/ I see only .so files, likewise for /lib/, /lib32/ etc. I figure I could chuck it in there, but is there any place where it can get cozy with other .a files or is that as good place as any? I'm not an library expert, but I'm pretty sure it won't matter functionally, but I'd like to learn conventional best practice. Also, where is the standard place to put the headers? Thanks!
