  When I try to install a software using Ubuntu Software center I get: Failed to download repository information Check Your Internet connection When I try to do a apt get-install something, I get: 407 Proxy Authentication Required I use a proxy server that requires a user-name and a password. I have set my systems proxy manually, by plugging in the required numbers in the Networks proxy and applied it system wide. I guess the problem now is plugging in my user-name and password. When I use INTERNET via Mozilla, it specifically asks me for my user-name and password.

  I have been studying design patterns and came accross the fly weight pattern. I have been trying to see opportunities to use the pattern in my applications but I am having trouble seeing how to use it. Also, what are some signs that a fly weight pattern is being used when I read other peoples code? According to the definition it says: Use sharing to support large numbers of fine-grained objects efficiently. If I read it right Dictionaries and Hashtables could be instances of fly weights is this correct? Thanks in advance.

• How can I ensure reasonably spaced out enemies

  I have a simple javascript game and I'm initializing their positions on the y axis using random numbers. How can I ensure that they are reasonably spaced apart? My simple algorithm is: y = (Math.random()*1000%600); However I frequently get enemies almost directly on top of each other. This is a huge problem for the game, since it's a word game and the enemies have text on their center, that if overlapped makes them impossible to kill since you can't see the words. Any advice would be appreciated! I'm pretty new to making games in general so this has all been a learning experience for me!

• What is the most compatible, widely used production language to export knowledge and skills gained from Haskell?

  I like Haskell, plain and simple. While Haskell is used in production software, it's not especially widely deployed from what I've seen. What is the most similar and still widely used language in regards to production projects so that I might have a snowball's chance of using something similarly awesome in industry? Also is the same language from the first part available on large numbers of platforms? If not, what is the best alternative that has wide platform deployment? I'd like a single language to put on my to-do list rather than a massive swarm or family. Hard evidence would be a plus.

His usage of these functions appears correct in order not to lose a byte; although he seems to be using them now for everything. The manual only says: For arbitrary precision mathematics PHP offers the Binary Calculator which supports numbers of any size and precision, represented as strings. How much is any size? Is it really necessary? How big is the default float in PHP? Are there any good advice regarding this or things to keep in mind?

I will have multiple vendors on my site and they will upload their products through CSV files for bulk upload. However there will be certain popular products already listed in the database, they can add those to their listing (like Amazon for 3rd party sellers). I have no idea how to assign product codes for every product, can you help me out? I'm talking about something like Amazon's ASIN number. Or may be is it possible to let vendors assign their own numbers? How does that work?

  So bassicly this is the problem quoted from my teacher : "You have to write a program in C++ that computes the minimal and the maximal value of function f(x,y) obtained on an integer point in a given rectangle [a, b] x [c, d]. Your program should prompt the user to input numerical values of a, b, c and d, as floating point numbers, which are expected to be in a range from -100 thru 100. • Is this a reliable method of parsing glGetShaderInfoLog()?

  I want to get a list of errors and their line numbers so I can display the error information differently from how it's formatted in the error string and also to show the line in the output. It looks easy enough to just parse the result of glGetShaderInfoLog(), look for ERROR:, then read the next number up to :, and then the next, and finally the error description up to the next newline. However, the OpenGL docs say: Application developers should not expect different OpenGL implementations to produce identical information logs. This makes me worry that my code may behave incorrectly on different systems. I don't need them to be identical, I just need them to follow the same format. So is there a better way to get a list of errors with the line number separate, is it safe to assume that they'll always follow the "ERROR: 0:123:" format, or is there simply no reliable way to do this?

• XSLT ... I can'f find a (working) find minimum value in XML and set variable

  I've search for hours and not found an example that allows for the very first position to be the lowest. I'm getting 'False' instead of the value returned .... EDIT: Oddly enough if I run a 2nd instance as MAX_Landed with ascending it returns a value just fine. If I switch the order in the XSLT the first instance will return 'False' and the 2nd will work. Hope I'm making sense ..... • Output the total number of String Characters [migrated]

  My Question is what method should I use if I wanted to get the total number of characters a user inputs? without using arrays, i tried using .length() but it did not return all characters say from the first and lastname, it only returned the first name. Here's an example of my code. (Please dont laugh im really new in programming :) ) System.out.print("Enter your first and last name: "); String yourName = keyboard.next(); System.out.println("Your name has a total of " + yourName.length() + " numbers"); what happened was if i enter say "Neo Matrix" it would only return 3.   Sometimes you're coding and you find yourself forgetting your context. For example, look at this situation: The cursor is on line 52. Imagine you're coding there and you're puzzling on some problem for some time. Wouldn't it be handy to know, without scrolling up (and then back down again to where you were working), what the method signature looks like? And does the method begin two lines above the visible code or 10 lines? That information can now, in NetBeans iDE 7.3 (and already in the 7.3 Beta) very easily be ascertained, by putting the cursor on the closing brace of the code block: As you can see, a new vertical line is shown parallel to the line numbers, connecting the end of the method with its start, as well as, at the top of the editor, the complete method signature, together with the number of the line on which it's found. Very handy. Same support is found for other file types, such as in JavaScript files.

  I am building a new website for a friend of mine. Its all plain html, and a server side include. The problem is to build static pages for 500 products would not be fun to create, or maintain. So i am forced to at least put dynamic information on these pages based off a spreadsheet, or dynamic pages all together. What i want to do is have a spreadsheet that can be used to keep track of in stock quantity, sku numbers, ecc.. that way i dont have to update hundreds of pages every night. He can just edit the spreadsheet and the pages will automatically adjust. I am a busy man, and i am not asking anyone to just give me the answer. But to save some time what is more worth learning to get this done fastest. HTML5, PHP, JAVA asp, or is there somehthing else better suited?

• iTunes 9.0.2 hangs on launch on Mac OS X 10.6.2

  My iTunes 9.0.2 hangs on launch in OS X 10.6.2. This doesn't happen all the time, only if I've been running for a while. Then it will recur until I restart. Similarly Safari 4.0.4 will hang in the flash player plugin when about to play a video. If I restart both these problems go away until later. Based on this crash dump I am suspecting Audio Hijack Pro. I will try to install a newer version of the driver involved, but so far I haven't had much luck. I have uninstalled the Flash Plugin (10.0.r42 and r32) but clearly I want it in the long run. This is iTunes' crash report. • Install Quartz.Net as a windows service and Test installation

  In this blog post I’ll be covering, 01: Where to download Quartz.net from 02: How to install Quartz.net as a Windows service 03: Test the Quartz.net Installation If you are new to Quartz.net I would recommend reading the blog post on a brief introduction to Quartz.net. 01 – Where to download Quartz.net? http://sourceforge.net/projects/quartznet/files/quartznet/       Currently version  Quartz.Net 2.0.1 is the recommended download version. 02 – How to install Quartz.net as a Windows service         Go to the download location and unzip the Quartz.net package Navigate to the folder Quartz.Net \ Server \ bin – This is where you will find different .net version installers of the quartz.net packages. For example in the screen shot above, you can see the Quartz.net .net 3.5 and .net 4 packages. Open up the Quartz.net .net 4.0 folder, this folder contains the files you need to install Quartz.net as a windows service Copy the contents of the folder Downloads\Quartz.NET-2.0.1\server\bin\4.0 to the folder %program files%\Quartz.net   5. Open up a new CMD as an administrator and run the below command to install Quartz.net as a windows service /> Quartz.Server.exe install 6. How do I know that Quartz.Net service has installed as a Windows service? Go to run prompt and type ‘services.msc’ you should now see all the windows services installed on your machine. Navigate down to look for Quartz.Net. The service installs itself as an automatic startup Type and log on as ‘Local System’. You can easily change this to your prefer account that you would like to run the service as. If you wanted to name the Quartz service something else then that’s also possible… Can I change the default display name of the quartz.net windows service? Yes, you can! Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Quartz.Net\ and open up the config file ‘quartz.config’ - You can change the instance name - You can change the default thread count of 10 - The port that the service listens to (by default this is port 555) A blog post on more configuration details can be found here. 03 – Test Quartz.Net windows service installation So, I have installed Quartz.Net as a windows service, how do I test whether my installation has been successful. Open up cmd as an administrator and run the below command, C:\Program Files (x86)\Quartz.Net> Quartz.Server.exe –i Since by default the Quartz.net windows service writes INFO level diagnostics (this can be changed from Quartz.Server.exe.config) you should see the service information show up on the console. For instance in the example above I can see that the service is running in a NON CLUSTERED mode, its currently not started and is currently in standby mode with 0 number of jobs executed so far… This was second in the series of posts on enterprise scheduling using Quartz.net, in the next post I’ll be covering how to run your first scheduled task using Quartz.net windows service.   I cant finish Apache2 install, also cannot remove it. It has blocked my dpkg, now I cant get no installations in or out. I even tried distro upgrade, but it did still has broken dpkg.. • How did my email end up in spam? Spam only filters this specific email, other email contents work

  My website has users buy our products and when the purchase completes, it sends the user an email. However, this email always ends up in spam! When the user first registers, the site also sends an email, this email however is not filtered and goes into the normal inbox. I'm not quite sure why this is so, gmail vaguely tells me that " It's similar to messages that were detected by our spam filters." So I'm thinking that I need to reword the following email better. Can I get some tips? • UPK 3.6.1 (is Coming)

  In anticipation of the release of UPK 3.6.1, I'd like to briefly describe some of the features that will be available in this new version. Topic Editor in Tabs Topic Editors now open in tabs instead of separate Developer windows. This offers several improvements: First, the bubble editor can be docked and resized in the same way as other editor panes. That's right, you can resize the bubble editor! The second enhancement that this changes brings is an improved undo and redo which allows each action to be undone and redone in the Topic Editor. New Sound Editor The topic and web page editors include a new sound editor with all the bells and whistles necessary to record, edit, import, and export, sound. Sound can be captured during topic recording--which is great for a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to narrate what they're recording--or after the topic has been recorded. Sound can also be added to web pages and played on the concept panes of modules, sections and topics. Turn off bubbles in Topics Authors may opt to hide bubbles either per frame or for an entire topic. When you want to draw a user's attention to the content on the screen instead of the bubble. This feature works extremely well in conjunction with the new sound capabilities. For instance, consider recording conceptual information with narration and no bubbles. Presentation Output UPK content can be published as a Presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. Publishing for Presentation will create a presentation for each topic published. The presentation template can be customized Using the same methods offered for the UPK document outputs, allowing your UPK-generated presentations to match your corporate branding. Autosave and Recovery The Developer will automatically save your work as often as you would like. This affords authors the ability to recover these automatically saved documents if their system or UPK were to close unexpectedly. The Developer defaults to save open documents every ten minutes. Package Editor Enhancement Files in packages will now open in the associated application when double-clicked. Authors can also choose to "Open with..." from the context menu (AKA right click menu.) See It! Window See It! mode may now be launched in a non-fullscreen window. This is available from the kp.html file in any Player package. This version of See It! mode offers on-screen navigation controls including previous frame, next frame, pause etc. Firefox Enhancments The UPK Player will now offer both Do It! mode and sound playback when viewed using Firefox web browser. Player Support for Safari The UPK Player is now fully supported on the Safari web browser for both Mac OS and Windows platforms. Keep document checked out Authors may choose to keep a document checked out when performing a check in. This allows an author to have a new version created on the server and continue editing. Close button on individual tabs A close button has been added to the tabs making it easier to close a specific tab. Outline Editor Enhancements Authors will have the option to prevent concepts from immediately displaying in the Developer when an outline item is selected. • Updated Security Baseline (7u45) impacts Java 7u40 and before with High Security settings

  The Java Security Baseline has been increased from 7u25 to 7u45.  For versions of Java below 7u45, this means unsigned Java applets or Java applets that depend on Javascript LiveConnect calls will be blocked when using the High Security setting in the Java Control Panel. This issue only affects Applets and Web Start applications. It does not affect other types of Java applications. The Short Answer Users upgrading to Java 7 update 45 will automatically fix this and is strongly recommended. The More Detailed Answer There are two items involved as described on the deployment flowchart: The Security Baseline – a dynamically updated attribute that checks to see which Java version contains the most recent security patches. The Security Slider – the user-controlled setting of when to prompt/run/block applets. The Security Baseline Java clients periodically check in to understand what version contains the most recent security patches. Versions are released in-between that contain bug fixes. For example: 7u25 (July 2013) was the previous secure baseline. 7u40 contained bug fixes. Because this did not contain security patches, users were not required to upgrade and were welcome to remain on 7u25. When 7u45 was released (October, 2013), this critical patch update contained security patches and raised the secure baseline. Users are required to upgrade from earlier versions. For users that are not regularly connected to the internet, there is a built in Expiration Date. Because of the pre-established quarterly critical patch updates, we are able to determine an approximate date of the next version. A critical patch released in July will have its successor released, at latest, in July + 3 months: October. The Security Slider The security slider is located within the Java control panel and determines which Applets & Web Start applications will prompt, which will run, and which will be blocked. One of the questions used to determine prompt/run/block is, “At or Above the Security Baseline.” The Combination JavaScript calls made from LiveConnect do not reside within signed JAR files, so they are considered to be unsigned code. This is correct within networked systems even if the domain uses HTTPS because signed JAR files represent signed "data at rest" whereas TLS (often called SSL) literally stands for "Transport Level Security" and secures the communication channel, not the contents/code within the channel. The resulting flow of users who click "update later" is: Is the browser plug-in registered and allowed to run? Yes. Does a rule exist for this RIA? No rules apply. Does the RIA have a valid signature? Yes and not revoked. Which security prompt is needed? JRE is below the baseline. This is because 7u45 is the baseline and the user, clicked "upgrade later." Under the default High setting, Unsigned code is set to "Don’t Run" so users see: Additional Notes End Users can control their own security slider within the control panel. System Administrators can customize the security slider during automated installations. As a reminder, in the future, Java 7u51 (January 2014) will block unsigned and self-signed Applets & Web Start applications by default.

The trick in building this thing has been that it mostly tossed the previous WebForms version, which was all full of crusties. The time table for this is a little harder to pin down, as day jobs and families will have their effect. Other notes Refactoring will be a priority. As the features of MVC have evolved, so have my desires to use it in a fashion that makes things clear and easy to follow. I don't even know if anyone will ever start mucking around in the code, but on the off chance they do, I'd like what they find to not suck. Other nice-to-haves are builds to target Windows Azure and SQL CE. A nice setup UI would be super too. I think the ASP.NET MVC world has gone long enough without a decent forum.The biggest challenge that I've found is making the forum something that can be dropped in any app. While it does rope its views into an area, areas are mostly just routing details. I haven't thought of a clever way yet to limit dependency injection, for example, to just the forum bits. I mean, everyone should be using Ninject, but how realistic is that? ;)How much time and effort should you spend on POP Forums in its current state? Change is inevitable, but at this point I'm reasonably committed to not changing the database schema. I really think it will stay as-is. All bets are off for the various interfaces throughout the app, but the data should generally resist change. It's not even that different from v8, which was one of the original goals because I didn't want to rewrite SQL or introduce a new ORM or whatever. My point is that if you wanted to build a site around this today, even though it's not entirely functional, I think it's low risk in terms of data loss. I can't vouch for whether or not you know what you're doing.I've been having some chats with people lately about quoting posts, and honestly there has to be something better and straight forward. That continues to be a holy grail of mine, and some day, I hope to find it.Enjoy... it's starting to feel more real every day!

• Christian Radio Locator iPhone app

  For the last three months or so I've been working on an iPhone (and iPad) app in my spare time. It all started when I took the kids to Minneapolis and had a hard time finding radio stations to listen to on the trip. I looked in the App Store for an app that would use my GPS to show me Christian radio stations nearby, but there wasn't one. So I decided to build my own. Using public information from the FCC and a few other sources, I built a database in Google docs that contains the frequency for all Christian radio stations, where the tower is located and how far the tower can reach. I also included any streaming audio information and other contact information like Facebook or Twitter that I could find. Google spreadsheets publish in JSON format (yes, really) and Xcode can automatically deserialize JSON into a properly formatted entity. This is one area that Xcode is far superior to C#. In a just a few lines of code, I can have a list of in-memory strongly typed objects from a web-based JSON feed. To accomplish the same thing natively in .NET would be much more work and wouldn't feel nearly as clean when it was said and done. The snazzy icon shown above was built by my very talented wife. She hasn't yet provided any feedback on the app's user interface, which is why it is so plain and boring. I used a navigation view controller and EGO pull to refresh table view to construct the main window. Pulling down to refresh initiates a GPS lookup, which queries the database for radio stations in range (yes, you can pass parameters to Google spreadsheets and get a subset back in JSON). Pulling up on the table extends the range of the search and includes stations that may not be close enough to get clear audio. This feature is not that intuitive and the next version contains an update to that functionality. Tapping a cell will show a detail view that displays additional information about the station. The user can click to view the station on a map, click to listen to an online stream (if available) or click to see the station's Facebook or Twitter pages. Swiping back and forth on the table changes the information that is displayed on the right hand side of the table cell. It scrolls through the city where the tower is located, how far the phone is from the tower, the range of the tower and in the next version a signal strength indicator. This was pretty easy to implement once I figured out how to assign the gesture recognizer delegate.  Tapping and holding on a cell will jump the user to the map view screen. Which is pretty cool, but very hard for even a power user to discover. To tackle the issue of discoverability, the next version has a series of instructions displayed at the bottom of the screen to show the user the various shortcuts. Once the user has performed the swipes and long holds, the instructions disappear. I've learned a lot developing this app. Spending over a decade exclusively in .NET made the learning curve a bit steep, but once I learned the structure and syntax of Objective-C, I've learned to appreciate the power and simplicity of it. Here are a few screenshots. I would really appreciate any feedback and especially iTunes reviews. Technically it is open source and a smart googler could probably find it. • Dude, what’s up with POP Forums vNext?

  Yeah, it has been awhile. I posted v9.2 back in January, about five months ago. That’s a real change from the release pace I had there for awhile. Let me explain what’s going on. First off, in the interim, I re-launched CoasterBuzz, which required a lot of my attention for about two of those months. That’s a good thing though, because that site is just about the best test bed I could ask for. The other thing is that I committed to make the next version use ASP.NET MVC 4, which is now at the RC stage. I didn’t think much about when they’d hit their RTW point, but RC is good enough for me. To that end, there is enough change in the next version that I recently decided to make it a major version upgrade, and finish up the loose ends and science projects to make it whole. Here’s what’s in store… Mobile views: I sat on this or a long time. Originally, I was going to use jQuery Mobile, and waited and waited for a new release, but in the end, decided against using it. Sometimes buttons would unexplainably not work, I felt like I was fighting it at times, and the CSS just felt too heavy. I rolled my own mobile sugar at a fraction of the size, and I think you’ll find it easy to modify. And it’s Metro-y, of course! Re-do of background services: A number of things run in the background, and I did quite a bit of “reimagining” of that code. It’s the weirdness of running services in a Web site context, because so many folks can’t run a bona fide service on their host’s box. The biggest change here is that these service no longer start up by default. You’ll need to call a new method from global.asax called PopForumsActivation.StartServices(). This is also a precursor to running the app in a Web farm (new data layer and caching is the second part of that). I learned about this the hard way when I had three apps using the forum library code but only one was actually the forum. The services were all running three times as often with race conditions and hits on the same data. That was particularly bad for e-mail. CSS clean up: It’s still not ideal, but it’s getting better. That’s one of those things that comes with integrating to a real site… you discover all of the dumb things you did. The mobile CSS is particularly easier to live with. Bug fixes: There are a whole lot of them. Most were minor, but it’s feeling pretty solid now. So that’s where I am. I’m going to call it v10.0, and I’m going to really put forth some effort toward finishing the mobile experience and getting through the remaining bugs. The roadmap beyond that will likely not be feature oriented, but rather work on some other things, like making it run in Azure, perhaps using SQL CE, a better install experience, etc. As usual, I’ll post the latest here. • No more internet connection after update in 14.04 with Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260

  My Dell XPS 15 (haswell) was working fine until I stupidly accepted recently to apply Ubuntu updates. Since then, my wifi does not work (it shows "device not managed" when clicking wifi icon in toolbar). Even USB to Ethernet adapter does not seem to work. Bluetooth at least "sees" other bluetooth devices around... • A SharePoint Developer&rsquo;s Toolchest

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). When we develop for SharePoint, we end up using many tools, third party or Microsoft, to facilitate our development. What are some of your favorite tools? Mine are as below - 1. Reflector: When I saw reflector, I was pretty convinced that a tool better and more useful than it doesn’t exist. Well I was wrong! Redgate took over reflector and they still offer it as a free version, but they have a paid version called reflector pro. It lets you debug third party source code, as if you had the source code. Brilliant! Who needs documentation anymore when you have real code? 2. ULS Viewer: It is no secret, reading ULS logs is a pain in the rear. Well, not so with ULS Viewer, which does work with SharePoint 2007 as well. But it’s just way cooler with SharePoint 2010. You know when you get an error in SharePoint 2010 it shows you an error like as below: Well, the ULS Viewer will allow you to set filtering critereon, allowing you to immediately zero in, into an error, across multiple WFEs even. Also there are numerous other facilities built into the tool, such as advanced filtering, critical error notifications, etc. A must have! You can read the documentation of the ULSViewer here. 3. SPDisposeCheck: Did you know that the MySite object is strange? What is strange about it? That you have to dispose it even if you didn’t create it!? Well who the hell remembers all that! Honestly I do! And you should too. But there is a tool to help you sanitize your code. And that is SPDisposeCheck. You run it against your DLL or EXE, and it will give you suggestions on where you might have missed calling dispose on an object. You still have to use your head, but having this tool helps. 4. DebugView: Debugging for SharePoint can be difficult sometimes. Sometimes your breakpoints don’t get hit. And while you can try and make them hit, it is sometimes easier to just write a bunch of Debug.WriteLines, and catch them from an external application such as DebugView. You simply use your code, and DebugView will catch all the Debug.WriteLine’s in your code like this - 5. BGInfo: One annoying thing about SharePoint projects, it causes the number of servers to multiply like bunnies. As I’m RDP’ing into many computers trying to diagnose a crazy issue, sometimes it becomes hard to remember which machine is which. BGInfo puts all that on the wallpaper, alongwith a bunch of other useful info. A bit like this - 5. WSPBuilder: SharePoint 2007 only, but I think there maybe a version for SP2010 coming later. I think the VS2010 tools for SP2010 development are quite nice, so WSPBuilder, well so far I don’t miss it. But lets see what WSPBuilder for 2010 brings – I haven’t seen it yet. However, I want to confidently assert that WSPBuilder for SP2007 is simply awesome. 6. SharePoint Manager: The SharePoint Manager 2010 is a SharePoint object model explorer. It enables you to browse every site on the local farm and view every property. It also enables you to change the properties. The VS2010 dev tools now include a server explorer, which show you a subset of properties in read-only. I would LOVE to see SharePoint manager like functionality built into VS2010.
