  • WPF ListView as a DataGrid – Part 3

    I have had a lot of great feedback on the blog post about turning the ListView into a DataGrid by creating GridViewColumn objects on the fly. So, in the last 2 parts, I showed a couple of different methods for accomplishing this. Let’s now look at one more and that is use Reflection to extract the properties from a Product, Customer, or Employee object to create the columns. Yes, Reflection is a slower approach, but you could create the columns one time then cache the View object for re-use. Another potential drawback is you may have columns in your object that you do not wish to display on your ListView. But, just because so many people asked, here is how to accomplish this using Reflection.   Figure 1: Use Reflection to create GridViewColumns. Using Reflection to gather property names is actually quite simple. First you need to pass any type (Product, Customer, Employee, etc.) to a method like I did in my last two blog posts on this subject. Below is the method that I created in the WPFListViewCommon class that now uses reflection. When you pass in a Product object as Type, you can now use the GetProperties method and specify, via flags, which properties you wish to return. In the code that I wrote, I am just retrieving the Public properties and only those that are Instance properties. I do not want any static/Shared properties or private properties. GetProperties returns an array of PropertyInfo objects. You can loop through this array and build your GridViewColumn objects by reading the Name property from the PropertyInfo object. Build the Product Screen To populate the ListView shown in Figure 1, you might write code like the following: C#private void CollectionSample(){  Product prod = new Product();   // Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View =      WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns(typeOf(Product));  lstData.DataContext = prod.GetProducts();} VB.NETPrivate Sub CollectionSample()  Dim prod As New Product()   ' Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns( _       GetType(Product))  lstData.DataContext = prod.GetProducts()End Sub All you need to do now is to pass in a Type object from your Product class that you can get by using the typeOf() function in C# or the GetType() function in VB. That’s all there is to it! Summary There are so many different ways to approach the same problem in programming. That is what makes programming so much fun!   • Searching for tasks with code – Executables and Event Handlers

    Searching packages or just enumerating through all tasks is not quite as straightforward as it may first appear, mainly because of the way you can nest tasks within other containers. You can see this illustrated in the sample package below where I have used several sequence containers and loops. To complicate this further all containers types, including packages and tasks, can have event handlers which can then support the full range of nested containers again. Towards the lower right, the task called SQL In FEL also has an event handler not shown, within which is another Execute SQL Task, so that makes a total of 6 Execute SQL Tasks 6 tasks spread across the package. In my previous post about such as adding a property expressionI kept it simple and just looked at tasks at the package level, but what if you wanted to find any or all tasks in a package? For this post I've written a console program that will search a package looking at all tasks no matter how deeply nested, and check to see if the name starts with "SQL". When it finds a matching task it writes out the hierarchy by name for that task, starting with the package and working down to the task itself. There are several of types of executables, such as tasks, or sequence containers and loops. As with all of our executables a task can have event handlers which themselves contain more executables such as task and loops, so we also make a call out our ProcessEventHandlers method. The other types of executables such as loops can also have event handlers as well as executables. As shown with the example for the ForEachLoop we call the same ProcessExecutables and ProcessEventHandlers methods again to drill down into the hierarchy of objects that the package may contain. This code needs to explicitly check for each type of executable (TaskHost, Sequence, ForLoop and ForEachLoop) because whilst they all have an Executables property this is not from a common base class or interface. This example was just a simple find a task by its name, so ProcessTaskHost really just does that.     I was very happy to receive an email last week to confirm I would receive the MVP Award for SQL Server for 2010 - very exciting news ! I missed the first FedEx delivery, however this weekend they were able to successfully deliver the package from Microsoft and it began to feel very real as I opened the box to find the MVP glass-ware! Since leaving Microsoft, the past couple of years have been incredibly challenging, exciting and satisfying.  The MVP Award is really special, the SQL community has a fantastic, international base with many successful events, leaders and contributors providing an impressive network both online and in-person.   • Migrate add-on domain olddomain.com to newdomain.com

    I have 2 domains that are registered at GoDaddy : domaina.com (not hosted, only domain name is registered to GD) domainb.com (hosted at a different webhost, domain name registered to GD) domainb.com is an already working site, with a different webhost, but the domain name is registered to GoDaddy(and I assume the nameservers are changed to redirect to the webhost). Now, I don't understand why this was done, but domainb.com is considered a subdomain on the host... meaning the files are in a seperate folder on the server. Ex : public-html/domainb.com/public-html/FILES The structure is similar to this on the webhost : HostNAME (main root folder) domainb.com (subdomain of hostname) domainc.com (etc...) domaind.com (etc...) I want to transfer the site domainb.com to domaina.com, meaning domaina.com will become the new website, without having to re-upload all the content and CMS. The old one will redirect to domaina.com once the transfer is done (using 301 redirects). Can anyone tell me how I can do this?

    Today I was looking for a solution to get finally the JScript/Javascript/jQuery Intellisense Featureworking with my ASP.Net Webform Project to work. I found some good articles: - JScript IntelliSense Overview- JScript IntelliSense: A Reference for the “Reference” Tag- Enabling JavaScript intellisense in VS.NET 2010 to work with SharePoint 2010- Rich IntelliSense for jQueryBUT, all of suggested solutions did not work right with my Master Page based Visual Studio 2010 Solution.Only with physical Javascript Files (Telerik includes certain Javascript Files like jQuery as Ressource) or/andconfigure always a new ASP.NET Scriptmanager / RadScriptManager on every page derived from the Master Page, wasn't exactly what I was looking for.   • "SASL authentication failed" with mutt and Gmail, why?

    I am confused by this, I have installed a lot of new pkgs and followed some tutorials after googling but I keep getting this kind of SASL -err. I am not sure whether the mistake is in some Gmail settings or should I check some settings in Ubuntu?     I am having a difficulty in deciding the database & its structure. Let us say the problem is like this. For my product I have various customers( each is an educational institute) Each customer have their own sub-clients ( Institution have students) Each student record will have some basic information like "name" & "Number" . There are also additional information that a customer(institution) might want to ask sub-client(student) like "email" or "semester" I have come up with two solutions : 1. Mysql _insititution__ id-|- Description| __Student__ id-|-instituition_id-|-Name-|-Number| __student_additional_details__ student_id -|- field_name -|- Value Student_additional_details will have multiple records for each student depending upon number of questions asked from institution. 2.MongoDb _insititution___ id-|- Description| _Student__ id-|-instituition_id-|-Name-|-Number|-otherfield1 -|- otherfield2 with mongo the structure itself can be dynamic so student table seems really good in mongo . But the problem comes when I have to relate student with institution . So which one is a better design ? Or some other idea ?

  • Internet doesn't work by default

If policy is enabled which locks down the account after X number of failed attempts then the account is automatically locked down.This error with 'sa' account is very common. sa is default administartor login available with SQL server. So there are chances that an ousider has tried to bruteforce your system. (This can cause even if a legitimate tries to access the account with wrong password.Sometimes a user would have changed the password without informing others. So the other users would try to lo) You can unlock the account with the following options (use another admin account or connect via windows authentication) Alter account & unlock ALTER LOGIN sa WITH PASSWORD='password' UNLOCK Use another account Almost everyone is aware of the sa account. This can be the potential security risk. Even if you provide strong password hackers can lock the account by providing the wrong password. ( You can provide extra security by installing firewall or changing the default port but these measures are not always practical). As a best practice you can disable the sa account and use another account with same privileges.ALTER LOGIN sa DISABLE You can edit the lock-ot options using gpedit.msc( in command prompt type gpedit.msc and press enter). The available range is from 0 minutes through 99,999 minutes. If you set the account lockout duration to 0, the account will be locked out until an administrator explicitly unlocks it. If an account lockout threshold is defined, the account lockout duration must be greater than or equal to the reset time. Default: None, because this policy setting only has meaning when an Account lockout threshold is specified.When creating SQL user you can set CHECK_POLICY=on which will enforce the windows password policy on the account. The following policies will be applied Define the Enforce password history policy setting so that several previous passwords are remembered. With this policy setting, users cannot use the same password when their password expires.  Define the Maximum password age policy setting so that passwords expire as often as necessary for your environment, typically, every 30 to 90 days. With this policy setting, if an attacker cracks a password, the attacker only has access to the network until the password expires.  Define the Minimum password age policy setting so that passwords cannot be changed until they are more than a certain number of days old. This policy setting works in combination with the Enforce password historypolicy setting. If a minimum password age is defined, users cannot repeatedly change their passwords to get around the Enforce password history policy setting and then use their original password. Users must wait the specified number of days to change their passwords.  Define a Minimum password length policy setting so that passwords must consist of at least a specified number of characters. Long passwords--seven or more characters--are usually stronger than short ones. With this policy setting, users cannot use blank passwords, and they have to create passwords that are a certain number of characters long.  Enable the Password must meet complexity requirements policy setting. This policy setting checks all new passwords to ensure that they meet basic strong password requirements.  Password must meet the following complexity requirement, when they are changed or created: Not contain the user's entire Account Name or entire Full Name. The Account Name and Full Name are parsed for delimiters: commas, periods, dashes or hyphens, underscores, spaces, pound signs, and tabs.     Today I passed Microsoft exam 70-541: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 - Application Development. This exam gives you MCTS certificate. In this posting I will talk about the exam and also give some suggestions about books to read when preparing for exam. About exam This exam was good one I think. The questions were not hard and also not too easy. Just enough to make sure you really know what you do when working with SharePoint. Or at least to make sure you how things work. After couple of years active SharePoint coding this exam needs no additional preparation. The questions covered very different topics like alerts, features, web parts, site definitions, event receivers, workflows, web services and deployments. There are 59 questions in the exam (this information is available in internet) and you have time a little bit more than two hours. It took me about 40 minutes to get questions answered and reviewed. I strongly suggest you to study the parts of WSS 3.0 you don’t know yet and write some code to find out how to use these things through SharePoint API. Good reading For guys with less experience there are some good books to suggest. Take one or both of these books because there are no official study materials or training kits available for this exam. One of my colleagues who is less experienced than me suggested Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 by Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson. He told me that he found this book most useful for him to pass this exam.   When I started with SharePoint Services 3.0 my first book was Developer’s Guide To The Windows SharePoint Services v3 Platform by Todd C. Bleeker. It helped me getting started and later it was my main handbook for some time. Of course, there are many other good books and I suggest you to take what you find. Of course, before buying something I suggest you to discuss with guys who have read the book before. And make sure you mention that you are preparing for exam.   Conclusion If you are experienced SharePoint developer then this exam needs no preparation. Okay, some preparation is always good but if you don’t have time you are still able to pass this exam. If you are not experienced SharePoint developer then study before taking this exam – it is not easy stuff for novices. But if you pass this exam you can proudly say – yes, I know something about SharePoint! :)

  • Aggregating cache data from OCEP in CQL

    There are several use cases where OCEP applications need to join stream data with external data, such as data available in a Coherence cache. OCEP’s streaming language, CQL, supports simple cache-key based joins of stream data with data in Coherence (more complex queries will be supported in a future release). However, there are instances where you may need to aggregate the data in Coherence based on input data from a stream. This blog describes a sample that does just that. For our sample, we will use a simplified credit card fraud detection use case. The input to this sample application is a stream of credit card transaction data. The input stream contains information like the credit card ID, transaction time and transaction amount. The purpose of this application is to detect suspicious transactions and send out a warning event. For the sake of simplicity, we will assume that all transactions with amounts greater than $1000 are suspicious. The transaction history is available in a Coherence distributed cache. For every suspicious transaction detected, a warning event must be sent with maximum amount, total amount and total number of transactions over the past 30 days, as shown in the diagram below. Application Input Stream input to the EPN contains events of type CCTransactionEvent. This input has to be joined with the cache with all credit card transactions. The cache is configured in the EPN as shown below: <wlevs:caching-system id="CohCacheSystem" provider="coherence"/> <wlevs:cache id="CCTransactionsCache" value-type="CCTransactionEvent" key-properties="cardID, transactionTime" caching-system="CohCacheSystem"> </wlevs:cache> Application Output The output that must be produced by the application is a fraud warning event. This event is configured in the spring file as shown below. To get this information, we use a java cartridge method. This method uses Coherence’s query API on credit card transactions cache to get the required information. Therefore, the java cartridge method requires a reference to the cache. This may be set up by configuring it in the spring context file as shown below: <bean class="com.oracle.cep.ccfraud.CCTransactionsAggregator"> <property name="cache" ref="CCTransactionsCache"/> </bean> This is used by the java class to set a static property: public void setCache(Map cache) { s_cache = (NamedCache) cache; } The code snippet below shows how the total of all the transaction amounts in the past 30 days is computed. In the sample, I use a simple java bean to load the cache with initial transaction history data. An input adapter is used to create and send transaction events for the input stream.

  • Relationship between TDD and Software Architecture/Design

    I'm new to TDD and have been reading the theory since applying it is more complicated than it sounds when you're learning by yourself. As far as I know, the objective is to write test cases for each requirement and run the test so it fails (to prevent a false positive). Afterward, you should write the minimum amount of code that can pass the test and move to the next one. That being said, is it true that you get a fast development, but what about the code itself? this theory makes me think you are not considering things like abstraction, delegation of responsibilities, design patterns, architecture and others since you're just writing "the minimum amount of code that can pass the test". I know I'm probably wrong because if this were true, we'd have a lot of crappy developers with poor software architecture and documentation so I'm asking for a guide here, what's the relationship between TDD and Software Architecture/Design?

  • Annoying mistake when create web template in SharePoint 2010

    I get the error    Error occurred in deployment step ‘Add Solution’: Exception from HRESULT: 0x8107026E when deploying my web template project. It turns out that your name for the Web template name has to match the name of you WebTemplate section in the element.xml file. Please see the screenshot below, the highlighted two needs to be the same. It took me so long to figure out and I will keep here in case everybody else struggle.     Which of these two programmers is "better", from a managerial standpoint? The first programmer is Albert. You tell Al to make a system that will pass you the salt at the dinner table. He does it in less than a day. It works fine. The second programmer is Ben. Ben is told to make a program to pass the salt, and after two days, he's still working on it. It will save time in the long run...if you need pepper, ketchup, etc. There isn't any clear indication that there will be a need for this, but it's not improbable. Who's the better programmer to have working under you, as a manager?

    I have a an Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS server in which i host my website. The website is in Drupal. I tried to set up AWStats for my website but it is giving a lot of problems. I followed this link - http://www.sysadminworld.com/2011/set-up-awstats-on-ubuntu/ But I am confused about the domain name that needs to be given. The website can be accessed from http://xyz.com but the actual link is http://xyz.abc-def.com/root-folder. What is the domain name in this case? So what should be the name of the conf file then?
