• MySQL ORDER BY returns things in (apparently) random order !?

  The following query: SELECT DISTINCT ClassName FROM SiteTree ORDER BY ClassName is returning things in no apparent order! I get the same result whether I quote column/table names, or use DISTINCT or not, or add ASC or DESC. I assumed the indexes might be broken, or something like this, so tried dropping and recreating. Also tried REPAIR TABLE and CHECK TABLE. The table collation is set to latin1_swedish_ci. All the textual columns are set to use UTF-8 and collation is set to utf8_general_ci What could be causing this?

• How to decide if a parameter is the click event

  I have a function which can be called by either a click event or directly. When I call it directly, I need pass it a data parameter, so I've defined the function to accept a parameter to account for the direct call with the parameter. function myFunc(param){ } Within the function, I need to differentiate whether the function was called directly or from the click event, so what I thought I could simply check if param is set. If it's set, then the function is called directly. If it's not set, then it's called from the click event. The problem is that a click event by default passes an event object. So even when the function is called by the click event, param won't be null. So is there a way to check whether the param passed is the click event?

• Change update value of property (LINQTOSQL)

  Hi... I've got an entity object - Customer, with a property called VATRate. This VATRate is in the form of a decimal (0.25). I wanted to be able to enter a percentage value, and save it in the correct decimal value in the database, so I made this custom property: partial class Customer{ public decimal VatPercent { get{ ... //Get code works fine} set { this.VATRate = (value / 100); } } } And then I just bind this property instead of VATRate in my ASPX editTemplate (formview). This actually works - at least one time, when I debug an update, the value is set correctly one time, and then right after it gets set to the old value. I can't really see why it sets the value twice (and with the old value the second time). Can anyone shed some light on this?

  I am writing a batch file which is supposed to update the source files from tortoise and - if anything new was gotten - build the solution. Should be a very simple task. My batchfile looks like this (I've removed the non-essentials) set updatepath=%1 set solution=%2 set output=%3.txt call TortoiseProc.exe /command:update /path:%updatepath% /closeonend:2 call %devenv% %solution% /Build Debug /Out %output% Now, I'd like to know if tortoise actually got new code for me and the not build if it didn't. How do I do this? I am running Windows Vista (The batch script is called from another batch script about 7 times - one for each project I need updated and - perhaps - build).

• Javascript/jQuery: Varying parameters on a custom function

  I'm writing a plugin that will allow parameters to 'set it up.' But I predict the user won't always want to set up every aspect of the function. function This_Function(a,b,c,d); For instance, maybe they'll only want to set up a and c, but not b and d (they'll just prefer to leave those as defaults). How do I write the function (or the parameters for that matter) so that the user can customize which functions they would prefer to pass? I have a feeling it involves parsing input, but I've seen many other functions with this capability. Thanks in advance for the help.

• Design RESTful service with multiple ids

  I am designing a RESTful service. It is to list a set of data. The main problem is that the set does not have a reasonable, single identifier. Nor can the specific set be easily calculated within the knowledge of the system. As a result, it does not seem possible to have a GET /items/{identifier} service. I do have the id of each element being requested. My main issue is that it does not seem RESTful to list the ids in the URI (eg GET items/{id1},{id2},...,{idn} ). Right? I could see DELETE having a similar use case - remove multiple items in one request cycle. How would such a use case be satisfied while staying within the REST realm? Is that possible?

• Load DOM before css?

  My jQuery code sets the height of an element to 0px as soon as the page loads, then animates it to 500px. In my CSS, this element is already set to 500px (in case anyone has javascript turned off). I tried 'DEFER' on the tag where I link to the stylesheet so that the CSS loads in last of all, but that causes a blank white page to show up between navigating through pages - which I don't want, because I lose the smooth page transition effects that I am after. Is there a way that I can set the height in the CSS to 0px and IF javascript IS turned off, have it set to 500px, perhaps? :\ That's what I'm after, in effect. Any ideas? Many thanks for your help.

• Manually Building a Tree in CakePHP

  I'm currently working on building an application in CakePHP. There's a quite extensive existing data set that's conceptually a tree, but wasn't previously stored as one. What I mean by that, is there's no real relationship defined in the data. The problem I'm having is getting it to work correctly with the CakePHP tree behaviour. Because I have to set all the values on existing data - as opposed to Cake setting up the structure as elements are inserted - I need to understand how the lft/rght values work. So, I guess the question is: How does the structure data work, specifically the lft/rght values? How do I set it up so that the data comes out rationally, without inserting them one at a time? It's a 2 level tree, with Sections and sub-sections. Thanks for the help

• Timespan not accepting day in MVC3

  I have a MVC3 application in which i want to set a timespan to for example 2 days and 5 hours. when i enter 02:05:00:00 it gives me the following exception: System.OverflowException: SqlDbType.Time overflow. Value '2.05:00:00' is out of range. Must be between 00:00:00.0000000 and 23:59:59.9999999. When i enter 05:00:00 it correctly saves 5 hours into the database. according to MSDN timespan has a property for days. How do i correctly set the days? Model: public class ProductionTimeVM { [Required] public TimeSpan DefaultTime { get; set; } } In my view i just use: @Html.TextBoxFor(x => x.DefaultTime) For my controller: public ActionResult SaveProductionTime(ProductionTimeVM vm) { ProductionTime productionTime = new ProductionTime(); productionTime.Default = vm.DefaultTime; //some more code } Any idea's?

• Creating a Non-Databound Report in Winforms

  I am using Visual Studio 2008 and all the components that come with it as well as Infragisitics for Winforms. I need to design a label that will print to a label printer. None of the controls are databound and will most likely be set in code eg/Label.Text = "My Heading"; as there will be minimal information on the label. One piece of information is a barcode so I need the functionality to do that, I assume I can just set the font of the label to barcode and it will do its thing. Can I just add a Crystal Report to a form design it, set the label text properties in code, tell it what printer to print to and then call report.Print(); I've had a quick go and seems not as easy as I thought.   I have a list which I've set item-level permissions on. I set it to allow users to read all items and only edit their own items... The issue is that if I do this then I can still edit all items... If I change it so that I can only read my own and only edit my own then it works as expected... Anyone have any thoughts on why this would be occurring and a solution... I've set the list up to only allow one user account with contribute rights for testing purposes...

  I have a number of classes which extend an abstract class. The abstract parent class defines an enum with a set of values. Some of the subclasses inherit the parent class's enum values, but some of the subclasses need the enum values to be different. • predict location of single-line text from a UITextView

  Is this possible? Specifically, I have a UITextView, and the text is short enough that it will fit on a single line. I want to predict where it will appear, so that (for example) if I wanted to, I could set up a UILabel that rendered the text in exactly the same location. Once I get that figured out, what I really want to do is pick contentInset and/or contentOffset so that the text of the UITextView and the left-justified UILabel will render in the same location. But I figure the above will let me do that. EDIT: In response to a comment, the fundamental problem I am trying to get around is that UITextField does not let you set the location of the cursor. It appears a lot of people have tried to get around this without success. I need to be able to move the cursor -- inserting/deleting text there is not enough. • Cannot eliminate canvas page in facebook app.

  Hello, I have set a canvas page, and now, my facebook app page goes to a horrible place: http://apps.facebook.com/hificorder/?ref=ts whereas it is supposed to go to: http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=123018831077733 So, set the canvas page to the latter link...right? WRONG....when you do so, it causes an error. Set the canvas page to nothing??? FB does not allow. What do I do??? FYI, when you search for "HiFiCorder" in the normal facebook search, the canvas page is what comes up...this is horrible, please help.

• Is there a way to use a dictionary or xml in the Application Settings?

  I have to store a complex type in the application settings. I thought that storing it as XML would work best. The problem is I don't know how store XML. I prefer to store it as a managed XML rather than using just a string of raw XML having to parse it on each access. I managed to set the Type column of the setting to XDocument, but I was unable to set its value. Is there a way to use XDocument or XML in application settings? Update I found a way, simply by editing the .settings file with the xml editor. I changed it to a custom serializable dictionary, but I get the following error when I try to access the setting-property (I set it to a serialized representation of the default value). The property 'Setting' could not be created from it's default value. Error message: There is an error in XML document (1, 41). Any ideas will be appreciated.

  I turned snapshot isolation on in my database using the following code ALTER DATABASE MyDatabase SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ON ALTER DATABASE MyDatabase SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON and got rid off lots of deadlocks. But my database still produces deadlocks, when I need to run a script every hour to clean up 100,000+ rows. Is there a way I can avoid deadlocks in my cleanup script, do I need to set ROWLOCK specifically in that query? Is there a way to increase the number of row level locks that a database uses? How are locks promoted? From row level to page level to table level? My delete script is rather simple: delete statvalue from statValue, (select dateadd(minute,-60, getdate()) as cutoff_date) cd where temporaryStat = 1 and entrydate < cutoff_date Right now I am looking for quick solution, but a long term solution would be even nicer.   I have a code: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS Person ( name varchar(24) ... ) CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_polish_ci; This works OK in my application, but I read if someone put in name field a string that contains character wchich code is greater than 127, database will use 2 bytes (or more) to store this character. So i think, i will change character set to utf16: CHARACTER SET utf16 COLLATE utf16_polish_ci; But now when I run my application, exception apears: KeyNotFoundException. It apears exactly at these instructions: MySqlCommand komenda = baza.Polaczenie.CreateCommand (); komenda.CommandText = zapytanie; MySqlDataReader dr = komenda.ExecuteReader (); // HERE, at execute reader method if (dr.Read ()) ... 1) Anyone had similar problem? 2) Any idea how to use always 2 bytes/char in database field?

• Why Use java.lang.reflect.Array For Anything Other Than Array Creation?

  Java Class java.lang.reflect.Array provides a set of tools for creating an array dynamically. However in addition to that it has a whole set of methods for accessing (get, set, and length) an array. I don't understand the point of this, since you can (and presumably would) cast your dynamically generated array as an array upon creation, which means you can use the normal array access (bracket notation) functionality. In fact, looking at the source code you can see that is all the class does, cast the array, and throw an exception if the cast fails. So what's the point / usefulness of all of these extra methods?
