  • Are there any web application frameworks usable with .NET 2.0?

    Apologies if this has been asked many, many times before - I'm afraid I couldn't find any satisfactory answers. I'm stuck in an environment (a bank) where, although we have VS 2008 on the development machines, production machines are locked down to the .Net framework 2.0 and SQL Server 2005. Are there any modern application frameworks that I could employ? I've looked at things like Spring.NET, PureMVC and ASP.NET MVC (S#arp Arch?), but I don't really have the luxury of time to investigate in depth. I don't want to initiate a war over which framework might be best, I just want to know if there are any I can actually use.

  • Tip on Reusing Classes in Different .NET Project Types

    All of us have class libraries that we developed for use in our projects. When you create a .NET Class Library project with many classes, you can use that DLL in ASP.NET, Windows Forms and WPF applications. However, for Silverlight and Windows Phone, these .NET Class Libraries cannot be used. The reason is Silverlight and Windows Phone both use a scaled down version of .NET and thus do not have access to the full .NET framework class library. However, there are many classes and functionality that will work in the full .NET and in the scaled down versions that Silverlight and Windows Phone use.Let’s take an example of a class that you might want to use in all of the above mentioned projects. The code listing shown below might be something that you have in a Windows Form or an ASP.NET application. public class StringCommon{  public static bool IsAllLowerCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^A-Z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }   public static bool IsAllUpperCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^a-z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }} The StringCommon class is very simple with just two methods, but you know that the System.Text.RegularExpressions namespace is available in Silverlight and Windows Phone. Thus, you know that you may reuse this class in your Silverlight and Windows Phone projects. Here is the problem: if you create a Silverlight Class Library project and you right-click on that project in Solution Explorer and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu, the class file StringCommon.cs will be copied from the original location and placed into the Silverlight Class Library project. You now have two files with the same code. If you want to change the code you will now need to change it in two places! This is a maintenance nightmare that you have just created. If you then add this to a Windows Phone Class Library project, you now have three places you need to modify the code! Add As LinkInstead of creating three separate copies of the same class file, you want to leave the original class file in its original location and just create a link to that file from the Silverlight and Windows Phone class libraries. Visual Studio will allow you to do this, but you need to do one additional step in the Add Existing Item dialog (see Figure 1). You will still right mouse click on the project and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu. You will still highlight the file you want to add to your project, but DO NOT click on the Add button. Instead click on the drop down portion of the Add button and choose the “Add As Link” menu item. This will now create a link to the file on disk and will not copy the file into your new project. Figure 1: Add as Link will create a link, not copy the file over. When this linked file is added to your project, there will be a different icon next to that file in the Solution Explorer window. This icon signifies that this is a link to a file in another folder on your hard drive.   Figure 2: The Linked file will have a different icon to show it is a link. Of course, if you have code that will not work in Silverlight or Windows Phone -- because the code has dependencies on features of .NET that are not supported on those platforms – you  can always wrap conditional compilation code around the offending code so it will be removed when compiled in those class libraries.   • Configuring .NET Users in IIS 6 (ASP.NET 2.0, Win Server 2003)

    Is it possible in IIS 6 to administrate users as in IIS 7 (e.g. as described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731783%28v=ws.10%29.aspx)? In IIS7 you can define users within the ASP.NET group with click on .NET users and it automatically creates a ms sql server db in background in the website directory. So far I didn't found anything about the issue, most forum questions are about how to migrate asp.net sites from IIS6 to IIS7.

  • Issues with Apache redirect to www-prefixed URL

    I have a website with domain mysite.com. I would like to have it so that if a user types in "mysite.com" it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Additionally, "mysite.com/subdir" will also redirect to "www.mysite.com/subdir". I've looked and made changes with vhosts and also rewrites, but it's not working for the "mysite.com/subdir"-"www.mysite.com/subdir" case. Every time I type in "mysite.com/subdir", it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Only "www.mysite.com/subdir" works. Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I turned on rewrite logs and didn't see anything obvious, yet. This is my config files so far. Please let me know what I'm missing. Thanks!   • Visual Studio 2010 SP1

    Last week we shipped Service Pack 1 of Visual Studio 2010 and the Visual Studio Express Tools.  In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, SP1 includes a number of feature enhancements.  This includes improved local help support, IntelliTrace support for 64-bit applications and SharePoint, built-in Silverlight 4 Tooling support in the box, unit testing support when targeting .NET 3.5, a new performance wizard for Silverlight, IIS Express and SQL CE Tooling support for web projects, HTML5 Intellisense for ASP.NET, and more.  TFS 2010 SP1 was also released last week, together with a new TFS Project Server Integration Pack and Load Test Feature Pack.  Brian Harry has a good blog post about the TFS updates here. VS 2010 SP1 Download Click here to download and install SP1 for all versions of Visual Studio (including express).  This installer examines what you have installed on your machine, and only downloads the servicing downloads necessary to update them to SP1.  The time it takes to download and update will consequently depend on what all you have installed.  Jon Galloway has a good blog post on tips to speed up the SP1 install by uninstalling unused components. Web Platform Installer Bundles In addition to the core VS 2010 SP1 installer, we have also put together two Web Platform Installer (WebPI) bundles that automate installing SP1 together with additional web-specific components: VS 2010 SP1 WebPI Bundle Visual Web Developer 2010 SP1 WebPI Bundle The above WebPI bundles automate installing: VS 2010/VWD 2010 SP1 ASP.NET MVC 3 (runtime + tools support) IIS 7.5 Express SQL Server Compact Edition 4.0 (runtime + tools support) Web Deployment 2.0 Only the components that are not already installed on your machine will be downloaded when you use the above WebPI bundles.  This means that you can run the WebPI bundle at any time (even if you have already installed SP1 or ASP.NET MVC 3) and not have to worry about wasting time downloading/installing these components again. Earlier this year I did two posts that discussed how to use IIS Express and SQL CE with ASP.NET projects in SP1.  Read the below posts to learn more about how to use them after you run the above bundles: Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and IIS Express Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and SQL CE for ASP.NET The above feature additions work with any web project type – including both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC. Additional SP1 Notes Two additional notes about VS 2010 SP1: 1) One change we made between RTM and SP1 is that by default Visual Studio now uses software rendering instead of hardware acceleration when running on Windows XP.  We made this change because we’ve seen reports of (often inconsistent) performance issues caused by older video drivers.  Running in software mode eliminates these and delivers consistent speeds.  You can optionally re-enable hardware acceleration with SP1 using Visual Studio’s Tools->Options menu command – we did not remove support for HW acceleration on XP, we simply changed the default setting for it.  Jason Zander has written more details on the change and how to re-enable HW acceleration inside VS here. 2) We have discovered an issue where installing SP1 can cause TSQL intellisense within SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 to stop working (typing still works – but intellisense doesn’t show up).  The SQL team is investigating this now and I’ll post an update on how to fix this once more details are known.  Hope this helps, Scott P.S.     I started my career as a software developer about 6 months ago. This is my first job, and I am the only developer in this company. I gained .NET knowledge by self study and also by doing some university projects. Our systems have old foundations based on an earlier version of .NET, and I'm starting to feel that I am not improving since I am a maintenance programmer here. Everything is old and my manager is not really taking any chances on gradually improving the software. What is your opinion? What should I do? I am newbie and also work hard to find my way through. There is no other developer, not even a senior one to help me here. I need your advice on my situation. And one last thing, can I get a new job with doing maintenance programming? I mean don't managers say that you do not have the experience of developing a new software from scratch? I feel redundant, what do I do?

    In this weekend I made one of my new apps run on Windows Azure. I am building this application using ASP.NET MVC 3 RC and Razor view engine. In this posting I will list DLL-s you need to have as local copies to get ASP.NET MVC 3 RC run on Windows Azure web role. Besides assemblies that are already references you may need to add references to some more assemblies. If your project is using dynamically loaded assemblies that are not referenced from any of your project make sure you are including them as project items that are located in bin folder. This way these DLL-s are also put to deployment package and you don’t have to create code level references to them.

    My domain mydomain.com is registered with GoDaddy. I wish to host my Tumblr blog on this domain with Nearly Free Speech hosting. My active nameservers at GoDaddy already point to my authoritative ones at Nearly Free Speech which is working. However I'm baffled as to how to get my correct configuration to point to my Tumblr. Preferably I'd like (A) my domain http://mydomain.com to host the blog and have http://www.mydomain.com redirect also to http://mydomain.com. If this is too difficult my next preference is (B) to have http://www.mydomain.com host the blog whilst http://mydomain.com redirects to http://www.mydomain.com My third preference is to have (C) a sub-domain like http://tumblr.mydomain.com or http://tumblr.mydomain.com to host the blog and I guess have http://mydomain.com and http://www.mydomain.com both redirect to it. I've tried having two aliases mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com pointing to my permanent Nearly Free Speech IP at mydomain.nfshost.com and when I try to add: (1) an A record pointing mydomain.com to the IP 66.6.44.4 as per Tumblr's instructions it tells me I already have the bare domain as an alias so I cant do that. (2) the A record on the www.mydomain.com alias. I can do this with either www.mydomain.com set as an alias or not. But when I tried this with mydomain.com set as the canonical name the result when visiting either mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com was both of them continually redirecting to each other until an error was thrown. So I was wondering if there is a ninja that could save me some hair-pulling and tell me the correct way to config A, or else B, or else C.

  • Building my first ASP.NET WebForms application problem

    Hi I have recently started to learn C#/ASP.NET WebForms and after reading two books I thought I was ready to create my first web application. Problem is I could not have been more wrong. Although I am not quite a beginner as a programmer and have done some programming in Java (a Monopoly game), JavaScript (using jQuery), and PHP (create templates for WordPress), I never really created something that is database driven, and I can't seem to figure where to start. I am very confident in my HTML/CSS/jQuery skills, so that is not the problem. My end goal after becoming comfortable in ASP.NET WebForms is to learn MVC, ADO.NET, and the Entity Framework, and start a career as a .NET developer. I would like if someone could tell me some tutorials that build ASP.NET WebForms applications, such as a blog, so I can see what are the steps in creating an ASP.NET WebForms database driven application. I already have to projects in mind for ASP.NET. One is building a blog and the other building a job board.

  • Do I need to compile my solution with VS2010 in order to benefit from .NET 4.0 new Code Access Secur

    Hello, I currently develop an application in C# with framework .NET 3.5 SP1. In my app, I have satellite assemblies which are not in the same folder as the exe, and that causes me some trouble with FullTrust, as explained here. In order to solve that problem, I wish to use .NET 4.0 whose Code Access Security Policy should allow my satellite assemblies to be FullyTrusted. So my question is: is just installing the framework enough, or do I need to rebuild the solution with VS2010? Thanks

Because i was busy with some personal and professional work both and that’s why i am not able to work on writing blog posts which i have discovered in last few days. Here is one features of asp.net 4.0 that I am going to explain. As a web developer we all know about session. Without the use of session any database driven web application is incomplete. As we all know unlike windows form web forms are state less so when user interacts with web application we need to maintain state amongst web pages and we are using session for maintaining state between web pages for each users. ASP.NET is also provide same kind of session state functionalities. ASP.Net Session state identify request coming for same user and same browser for specific session time out interval and its preserves values in session for that specific time intervals and that’s help us in maintaining state amongst web pages for a specific user. ASP.NET Session state allows us to store session in three way 1. IncProc 2. Session State Service 3. SQL Server. In SQL Server mode it will store session in SQL Server tables instead of storing it in Server Memory. ASP.NET 4.0 provides a new property called Compression Enabled that means when we store values in serialized form in SQL Server with GZip Compression and that results in better performance. For that you need to store property in web.config like following. <sessionState allowCustomSqlDatabase="true" sqlConnectionString="data source=Server;Initial Catalog=aspnetsessionstatedb" compressionEnabled="true" /> That’s it now with the use of this property you can have better performance when you are storing large amount of data in session.But still you need to decide that why you want to stored large amount of data in session because its against best practices. (No pending delete/rename operations) Administrator privileges Does the installation package require administrator privileges to install? (I guess this is "yes" for all of them...)   • Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework Review

    Early in my career, when I wanted to learn a new technology, I’d sit in the bookstore aisle and I’d work my way through each of the available books on the given subject.  Put in enough time in a bookstore and you can learn just about anything. I used to really enjoy my time in the bookstore – but times have certainly changed.  Whereas books used to be the only place I could find solutions to my problems, now they may be the very last place I look.  I have been working with the ASP.NET MVC Framework for more than a year.  I have a few projects and a couple of major deployments under my belt and I was able to get up to speed with the framework without reading a single book*.  With so many resources at our fingertips (podcasts, screencasts, blogs, stackoverflow, open source projects, www.asp.net, you name it) why bother with a book? Well, I flipped through Steven Sanderson’s Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework a few months ago. And since it is prominently displayed in my co-worker’s office, I tend to pick it up as a reference from time to time.  Last week, I’m not sure why, I decided to read it cover to cover.  Man, did I eat this book up.  Granted, a lot of what I read was review, but it was only review because I had already learned lessons by piecing the puzzle together for myself via various sources. If I were starting with ASP.NET MVC (or ASP.NET Web Deployment in general) today, the first thing I would do is buy Steven Sanderson’s Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework and read it cover to cover. Steven Sanderson did such a great job with this book! As much as I appreciated the in-depth model, view, and controller talk, I was completely impressed with all the extra bits which were included.  There a was nice overview of BDD, view engine comparisons, a chapter dedicated to security and vulnerabilities, IoC, TDD and Mocking (of course), IIS deployment options and a nice overview of what the .NET platform and C# offers.  Heck, Sanderson even include bits about webforms! The book is fantastic and I highly recommend it – even if you think you’ve already got your head around ASP.NET MVC.  By the way, procrastinators may be in luck.  ASP.NET MVC V2 Framework can be pre-ordered.  You might want to jump right into the second edition and find out what Sanderson has to say about MVC 2. * Actually, I did read through the free bits of Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0.  But it was just a chapter – albeit a really long chapter.

Use the GCSettingsIsServerGC property to determine if server garbage collection is enabled.” “In the .NET Framework 4 and earlier versions, concurrent garbage collection is not available when server garbage collection is enabled. Starting with the .NET Framework 4.5, server garbage collection is concurrent. To use non-concurrent server garbage collection, set the <gcServer> element to true and the <gcConcurrent> element to false. “ So if you’re using ASP.Net 4.5 and have a multi-core server, you should try turning on the Server Garbage Collection and do some profiling to see if it improves the performance of your site.

  • Problem with redirecting *.domain.com & domain.com to www.domain.com for HTTPS

    We have a site I'll call acme.com. Most of the time you see http://www.acme.com and sometimes we redirect you to https://www.acme.com. We want to redirect anyone going to http://acme.com or http://*.acme.com to http://www.acme.com, and the same for https. (It's mainly to avoid the alert you get if you go to https://acme.com instead of https://www.acme.com) Our vhost file is at the end of the post. It works nicely except for one strange behavior: http://acme.com - successfully redirects to http://www.acme.com http://www.acme.com - successfully does not redirect http://foo.acme.com - successfully redirects to http://www.acme.com https://acme.com - successfully redirects to https://www.acme.com https://www.acme.com - successfully does not direct https://foo.acme.com - ERROR - redirects to http://www.acme.com It's this last result I can't fathom. I've tried a lot of trial and error solutions from Google & Stack Overflow but nothing seems to change it. Even if we swap the order of the configurations (so that 443 is before 80) it still redirects https://foo.acme.com to http://www.acme.com We are running Apache/2.2.12 on Ubuntu.   • Back From Microsoft Web Camps Beijing

    I am just back from Microsoft Web Camps, where Web developers in Beijing had a good time for 2 days with 2 fantastic speakers, Scott Hanselman and James Senior. On day 1, Scott and James talked about Web Platform Installer, ASP.NET core runtime, ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework, Visual Studio 2010, … They were humorous and smart, and everyone was excited! On day 2, developers were organized into teams to build Web applications. At the end of day 2, each team had a chance of presentation. Before ending, I also demonstrated my so-called “WebOS”, a tiny but funny Web website developed with ASP.NET MVC and jQuery, which looks like an operating system, to show the power of ASP.NET MVC and jQuery.
