• Python GUI does not update until entire process is finished

  I have a process that gets a files from a directory and puts them in a list. It then iterates that list in a loop. The last line of the loop being where it should update my gui display, then it begins the loop again with the next item in the list. My problem is that it does not actually update the gui until the entire process is complete, which depending on the size of the list could be 30 seconds to over a minute. This gives the feeling of the program being 'hung' What I wanted it to do was to process one line in the list, update the gui and then continue. Where did I go wrong? The line to update the list is # Populate listview with drive contents. • When I include only the jQuery 1.4 Library, I get an exception, why?

• How do I configure multiple Ubuntu Python installations to avoid App Engine's SSL error?

  I have Karmic Koala which has Python 2.6 installed by default. However I can't run any Python App Engine projects because they require Python 2.5 and python ssl. To install ssl I installed python2.5-dev first while following some instructions I found elsewhere. sudo apt-get install libssl-dev sudo apt-get install python-setuptools sudo apt-get install python2.5-dev sudo easy_install-2.5 pyopenssl However, I am afraid this is not good for my Ubuntu installation since Ubuntu expects to see version 2.6 of Python when you type 'python' on the command line. Instead, it says '2.5.5'. I tried to revert to the original default version of Python by doing this: sudo apt-get remove python2.5-dev But that didn't seem to do anything either - when I type 'python' on the command line it still say 2.5.5. And App Engine still doesn't work after all this. I continue to get an SSL-related error whenever I try to run my Python app: AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'HTTPSHandler' UPDATE: Just checked whether SSL actually installed as a result of those commands by typing this: $ python2.5 Python 2.5.5 (r255:77872, Apr 29 2010, 23:59:20) [GCC 4.4.1] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import ssl Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named ssl >>> As you can see, SSL is still not installed, which explains the continuing App Engine error. • CLI include paths to run zend framework via cron

  I wrote a command line utility using Zend Framework to do some nightly reporting. It uses a ton of the same functionality the accompanying site. It works great when I run it by hand, but when I run it on cron I have include path issues. Seems like it should be easily fixed with set_include_path, but maybe I'm missing something? My directory structure looks like this: /var/www/clientname/ application Globals.php commandline commandline_bootstrap.php public_html public_bootstrap.php library Zend In public_bootstrap.php I use set_include_path without a problem, relative to the current directory: set_include_path('../library' . PATH_SEPARATOR . get_include_path()); If I understand correctly, in commandline_bootstrap.php I need to put in the absolute path, so cron knows where everything is. My file starts like this: error_reporting(E_ALL); set_include_path('/var/www/clientname/library' . PATH_SEPARATOR . get_include_path()); require_once "../application/Globals.php"; But when I run it via cron I get the following error: PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '../application/Globals.php' (include_path='/var/www/clientname/library/') in /var/www/clientname/commandline/zfcli.php on line 11 I think PHP is accepting my new path, because when I run it command line and dump the phpinfo I can see: include_path = /var/www/clientname/library/:.:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php = .:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php I admit the syntax here looks a little strange, but I can’t figure out how to fix it. • Ruby Design Problem for SQL Bulk Inserter

  This is a Ruby design problem. How can I make a reusable flat file parser that can perform different data scrubbing operations per call, return the emitted results from each scrubbing operation to the caller and perform bulk SQL insertions? Now, before anyone gets narky/concerned, I have written this code already in a very unDRY fashion. Which is why I am asking any Ruby rockstars our there for some assitance. Basically, everytime I want to perform this logic, I create two nested loops, with custom processing in between, buffer each processed line to an array, and output to the DB as a bulk insert when the buffer size limit is reached. Although I have written lots of helpers, the main pattern is being copy pasted everytime. Not very DRY! Here is a Ruby/Pseudo code example of what I am repeating. lines_from_file.each do |line| line.match(/some regex/).each do |sub_str| # Process substring into useful format # EG1: Simple gsub() call # EG2: Custom function call to do complex scrubbing # and matching, emitting results to array # EG3: Loop to match opening/closing/nested brackets # or other delimiters and emit results to array end # Add processed lines to a buffer as SQL insert statement @buffer << PREPARED INSERT STATEMENT # Flush buffer when "buffer size limit reached" or "end of file" if sql_buffer_full || last_line_reached @dbc.insert(SQL INSERTS FROM BUFFER) @buffer = nil end end I am familiar with Proc/Lambda functions. • Can I use a keyPath in a predicate?

  For some reason, this didn't work (although the keypath does exist): NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"department.departmentName == %@", departmentName]; [fetchRequest setPredicate:predicate]; NSError *fetchError = nil; NSUInteger count = [moc countForFetchRequest:fetchRequest error:&fetchError]; // execution simply stops at this line, with no error or console log Execution just stops at the last line above when asking for the count. I don't get an console log. Also I don't get any kind of exception. The execution just stops. There are no objects in the persistent store yet. So maybe it crashes because of it tries to follow a keypath in a nonexisting object? Does that make sense? The line where GDB stops is this: 0x002a31cb <+0459> test %eax,%eax Previously to that, I see a lot of NSSQLAdapter... calls in the stack trace. There's definitely something wrong. Well, but when I set the Entity to the destination of the key path and then just do something like NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"departmentName == %@", departmentName]; then there is no problem and count simply is 0.

• How can this code throw a NullReferenceException?

  I must be going out of my mind, because my unit tests are failing because the following code is throwing a null ref exception: int pid = 0; if (parentCategory != null) { Console.WriteLine(parentCategory.Id); pid = parentCategory.Id; } The line that's throwing it is: pid = parentCategory.Id; The console.writeline is just to debug in the NUnit GUI, but that outputs a valid int. Edit: It's single-threaded so it can't be assigned to null from some other thread, and the fact the the Console.WriteLine successfully prints out the value shows that it shouldn't throw. Copy/pasted test into new console app and ran in VS showed that it was the line after the if statement block (not shown) that contained a null ref. • How do you keep text from wrapping in an NSTableView using NSAttributedString

  I have an NSTableView that has 2 columns, one for an icon and the other for two lines of text. In the second column, the text column, I have some larger text that is for the name of an item. Then I have a new line and some smaller text that describes the state of the item. When the name becomes so large that it doesn't fit on one line it wraps (or when you shrink the window down so small that it causes the names to not fit on a single line). row1=============== | image |  some name   | | image |   idle               | row2================ | image |  some name really long name   | <- this gets wrapped pushing 'idle' out of the view | image |   idle               | =================== My question is, how could I keep the text from wrapping and just have the NSTableView display a horizontal scroll-bar once the name is too large to fit?

• Anchor tags are blank

  I'm having a problem where the my anchor tags sometimes aren't displaying their links. This is happening on Mobile Safari on multiple iPhones, and in the iPhone simulator. I'm using jQtouch r147, PhoneGap, and jQuery 1.4.2. When the list is blank, I see the debug.log() line show me 'html is blank', and I also see the log line show me that the variable 'name' does, in fact, contain a valid name. When I check for anchor.html() == null, I've also tried to .remove() the anchor tag, and re-create it. But it always comes back without the name displayed. This happens on the mobile device and in the simulator, but I've never seen it happen in Safari or in Chrome. Has anyone seen something like this? I can't find the cause, and I can't get it to stop. • G++ Multi-platform memory leak detection tool

  Does anyone know where I can find a memory memory leak detection tool for C++ which can be either run in a command line or as an Eclipse plug-in in Windows and Linux. I would like it to be easy to use. Preferably one that doesn't overwrite new(), delete(), malloc() or free(). Something like GDB if its gonna be in the command line, but I don't remember that being used for detecting memory leaks. If there is a unit testing framework which does this automatically, that would be great. This question is similar to other questions (such as http://stackoverflow.com/questions/283726/memory-leak-detection-under-windows-for-gnu-c-c ) however I feel it is different because those ask for windows specific solutions or have solutions which I would rather avoid. I feel I am looking for something a bit more specific here. Suggestions don't have to fulfill all requirements, but as many as possible would be nice. Thanks. EDIT: Since this has come up, by "overwrite" I mean anything which requires me to #include a library or which otherwise changes how C++ compiles my code, if it does this at run time so that running the code in a different environment won't affect anything that would be great. Also, unfortunately, I don't have a Mac, so any suggestions for that are unhelpful, but thank you for trying. My desktop runs Windows (I have Linux installed but my dual monitors don't work with it) and I'd rather not run Linux in a VM, although that is certainly an option. My laptop runs Linux, so I can use that tool on there, although I would definitely prefer sticking to my desktop as the screen space is excellent for keeping all of the design documentation and requirements in view without having to move too much around on the desktop. NOTE: While I may try answers, I won't mark one as accepted until I have tried the suggestion and it is satisfactory. EDIT2: I'm not worried about the cross-platform compatibility of my code, it's a command line application using just the C++ libraries.

  I have a very weird probleme with mysqldb (mysql module for python). I have a file with queries for inserting records in tables. If I call the functions from the file, it works just fine. But when I try to call one of the functions from another file it throws me a _mysql_exception.InterfaceError: (0, '') I really don't get what I'm doing wrong here.. • Problems solving oddly acting labels in ie7.

  Okay so this is sort of a double question so I'll split it into two. First part In modern browsers the main bold labels sit above their corresponding form elements, and align to the left as is expected. However in ie7, they randomly site 10-15px inset. I went through the developer tools and could find nothing to fix it. I've made sure all my margins and padding is reset so I don't really understand =S Here's the page demo - link Maybe some of you ie bug fixing genius's know what the problem is? =D Second part Again with labels, this time the in-line ones resident next to the check boxes and radio buttons. In modern browsers again, the side beside the form elements as expected, but not so in ie7 where they take a new line. I've tried floating, changing margins and everything but to no effect in sitting it in-line with the div.checker or div.radio that is created by the uniform Jquery plugin.   Hi Everyone, I'm trying to get a block of code down to one line. I need a way to get the number of items in a list. My code currently looks like this: # Include the lib directory several levels up from this directory my @ary = split('/', $Bin); my @ary = @ary[0 .. $#ary-4]; my $res = join '/',@ary; lib->import($res.'/lib'); That's great but I'd like to make that one line, something like this: lib->import( join('/', ((split('/', $Bin)) [0 .. $#ary-4])) ); But of course the syntax $#ary is meaningless in the above line. Is there equivalent way to get the number of elements in an anonymous list? Thanks! PS: The reason for consolidating this is that it will be in the header of a bunch of perl scripts that are ancillary to the main application, and I want this little incantation to be more cut & paste proof.

• CSS overflow detection in JavaScript

  In order to display a line of text (like in a forum), and end that line with "..." if the text would overflow the line (not truncating using the CSS overflow property), there are a number of ways. I'm still seeking the best solution. For instance, Adding in CSS a "..." as a background-image is a possibility, but it would appear all the time, and this is not a good solution. Some sites just count the characters and if over - say - 100, truncates the string to keep only 100 (or 97) chars and add a "..." at the end. But fonts are usually not proportional, so the result is not pretty. For instance the space - in pixels - taken by "AAA" and "iii" is clearly different "AAA" and "iii" via a proportional font have the same width There is another idea to get the exact size in pixels of the string: create in Javascript a DIV insert the text in it (via innerHTML for instance) measure the width (via .offsetWidth) which is not implemented yet. However, I wonder if there could be any browser compatibility problem? Did any one tried this solution? Other recommendations would be welcome.

• Have you had DLL's fail after upgrading to 64 bit server?

  Hey All, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced failed DLL's after upgrading their servers. My company is in the process of upgrading our code and server's after ten years of using classic ASP. We've set up our new server running Windows 2008 and IIS 7. Our classic ASP code and our new asp.net mvc code work pretty well. Our problems started happening when we began moving our old websites to the new server. When trying to load the page on the actual server machine's browser, we initially got a 500 error. If we refreshed the page then some of the page would load but then display an error: Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800401f3' Server.CreateObject Failed /folder/scriptname.asp, line 24 800401f3 btw: On remote machines we would just get 500 errors. Line 24 is the first executable code in the script: '23 lines of comments set A0SQL_DATA = server.createobject("olddllname.Data") 'the rest of the script That specific line is trying to use a ten year old DLL to create a server object. I don't think the server configuration is a problem because I'm able to create "adodb.recordset" server objects without any problems. Is there an issue when running correctly registered old DLL's on 64 bit systems? Is there a way to get old DLL's working on 64 bit systems?

• JMeter CSV Data Set is corrupting Japanese strings stored as proper UTF-8, I get Question Marks instead

  I read in search terms from a simple text file to send to a search engine. It works fine in English, but gives me ???? for any Japanese text. Text with mixed English and Japanese does show the English text, so I know it's reading it. What I'm seeing: Input text: Snow Leopard ??????????????? Turns into: Snow Leopard ??????????????? This is in my POST field of an HTTP. If I set JMeter to encode the data, it just puts in the percent sequence for question marks. Interesting note: In the example above there are 15 Japanese characters, and then 15 question marks, so at some point it's being seen as full characters and not just bytes. About the Data: The CSV file is very simple in structure. There's only one field / one column, which I name TERM, and later use as ${TERM} I don't really need full CSV because it's only one string per line. There's no commas or quotes. When I run the Unix "file" command on the file, it says UTF-8 text. I've also verified it in command line and graphical mode on two machines. JMeter CSV Dataset Config: Filename: japanese-searches.csv File encoding: UTF-8 (also tried without) Variable names: TERM Delimiter: , Allow Quoted Data: False (I also tried True, different, but still wrong) Recycle at EOF: True Stop at EOF: False Staring mode: All threads A few things I've tried: Tried Allow quoted Data. It changed to other strange characters. -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 Tried encoding the POST, but it just turned into a bunch of %nn for question marks And I'm not sure how "debug" just after the each line of the CSV is read in. I think it's corrupted right away, but I'm not sure. If it's only mangled when I reference it, then instead of ${TERM} perhaps there's some other "to bytes" function call. I'll start checking into that. I haven't done anything with the JMeter functions yet.

• What could cause a PHP error on an include statement?

  I've got a bug in my PHP code that's been terrorizing me for several days now. I'm trying to clasp in a new module to an existing Magento (v1.4) site, though I'm very new to the Magento framework. I think I am pretty close to getting to "Hello, World" on a block that I want displayed in the backend, but I'm getting a 500 error when the menu item is selected. I managed to track it down (using echo stmts) to a line in the Layout.php file (app\code\core\Mage\Core\Model\Layout.php, line 472ish): if (class_exists($block, false) || mageFindClassFile($block)) { $temp = $block; echo "<p>before constructor: $temp</p>"; $block = new $block($attributes); echo "<p>after constructor: $temp</p>"; } For my block, this yields only "before constructor...", so I know this is what is failing. A little more debugging reveals that the class in $block (the new block I am trying to show) does not exist. I would have expected the __autoload function to take care of this, but none of my echos in __autoload are displaying. As a last ditch effort, I tried an include statement in Mage.php to the absolute location of the block class, but similar before and after echos reveal that that include statement becomes the breaking line. I'm tempted to start thinking "permissions", but I'm not well versed in the server management side of all this, and I have limited access to the test server (the test server belongs to the client). To anticipate the question: there are no errors reported in the PHP log file. I am actually not convinced that this site is reporting errors to the log file (I haven't seen anything from this site), though the client is certain that everything is turned on. IIS 7. Integrated mode, I'm pretty sure. Anyone know what could be causing this?
