• How to remove tearing in videos with Nvidia driver?

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 as my HTPC OS on ION board. Tearing was always a big problem but this guide (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/01/how-to-fix-video-tearing-in-videos-nvidia-ubuntu/) used to solve it in previous versions. I mean it used to because it doesn't solve it anymore. I tried making same changes (although compiz config is little different and same options are in different panels) but with no success. I also tried to manually set resolution and refresh rate of HDTV in nvidia settings - no changes at all. I know that open source drivers would solve a problem but it's not an option because I need VDPAU acceleration. I've also read that completely disabling of Composite solves the problem - can't do that because compizconfig-settings-manager crashes on attempt. • Assigning a DLL strong name

  Hi Guys, few days back I needed to install few DLL  assemblies to GAC, since I hardly knew about this topic, so googled on the internet and here is what I learned; There is a utility named ‘gacutil.exe’ which is delivered with Visual studio and .NET framework ( search in your PC for gacutil.exe) or you can also download  from internet. Before installing the DLL to GAC , ensure that the DLL you want to install has a strong name. To assign a strong name follow these steps::   1) Open the visual studio and open your C# project 2) Right click on the project/Solution and click on properties. 3) Click on the ‘Signing’ tab 4) Select the check box Sign the assembly and select a strong key file . 5) You can also create a new key file by selecting new, click on new to create a key file, provide the name of the file and password 6) Now build your solution, the dll file generated has a strong name.

• JustCode Provides Reflector Alternative

  If you've been a loyal Reflector user, you've probably been exposed to the debacle surrounding RedGate's decision to no longer offer a free version.  Since then, the race has begun for a replacement with a provider that would stand by their promises to the community.  Mono has an ongoing free alternative, which has been available for a long time.  However, other vendors are stepping up to the plate, with their own offerings. If Not Reflector, Then What? One of these vendors is Telerik.  In their recent Q1 2011 release of JustCode, Telerik offers a decompilation utility rivaling what we've become accustomed to in Reflector.  Not only does Telerik offer a usable replacement, but they've (in my opinion), produced a product that integrates more naturally with visual Studio than any other product ever has.  Telerik's decompilation process is so easy that the accompanying demo in this post is blindingly short (except for the presence of verbose narrative). If you want to follow along with this demo, you'll need to have Telerik JustCode installed.  If you don't have JustCode yet, you can buy it or download a trial at the Telerik Web site . A Tall Tale; Prove It! With JustCode, you can view code in the .NET Framework or any other 3rd party library (that isn't well obfuscated).  This demo depends on LINQ to Twitter, which you can download from CodePlex.com and create a reference or install the package online as described in my previous post on NuGet.  Regardless of the method, you'll have a project with a reference to LINQ to Twitter.  Use a Console Project if you want to follow along with this demo. Note:  If you've created a Console project, remember to ensure that the Target Framework is set to .NET Framework 4.  The default is .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, which doesn't work with LINQ to Twitter.  You can check by double-clicking the Properties folder on the project and inspecting the Target Framework setting. Next, you'll need to add some code to your program that you want to inspect. Here, I add code to instantiate a TwitterContext, which is like a LINQ to SQL DataContext, but works with Twitter: var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); If you're following along add the code above to the Main method, which will look similar to this: using LinqToTwitter; namespace NuGetInstall { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); } } } The code above doesn't really do anything, but it does give something that I can show and demonstrate how JustCode decompilation works. Once the code is in place, click on TwitterContext and press the F12 (Go to Definition) key.  As expected, Visual Studio opens a metadata file with prototypes for the TwitterContext class.  Here's the result: Opening a metadata file is the normal way that Visual Studio works when navigating to the definition of a type where you don't have the code.  The scenario with TwitterContext happens because you don't have the source code to the file.  Visual Studio has always done this and you can experiment by selecting any .NET type, i.e. a string type, and observing that Visual Studio opens a metadata file for the .NET String type. The point I'm making here is that JustCode works the way Visual Studio works and you'll see how this can make your job easier. In the previous figure, you only saw prototypes associated with the code. i.e. Notice that the default constructor is empty.  Again, this is normal because Visual Studio doesn't have the ability to decompile code.  However, that's the purpose of this post; showing you how JustCode fills that gap. To decompile code, right click on TwitterContext in the metadata file and select JustCode Navigate -> Decompile from the context menu.  The shortcut keys are Ctrl+1.  After a brief pause, accompanied by a progress window, you'll see the metadata expand into full decompiled code. Notice below how the default constructor now has code as opposed to the empty member prototype in the original metadata: And Why is This So Different? Again, the big deal is that Telerik JustCode decompilation works in harmony with the way that Visual Studio works.  The navigate to functionality already exists and you can use that, along with a simple context menu option (or shortcut key) to transform prototypes into decompiled code. Telerik is filling the the Reflector/Red Gate gap by providing a supported alternative to decompiling code.  Many people, including myself, used Reflector to decompile code when we were stuck with buggy libraries or insufficient documentation.  Now we have an alternative that's officially supported by a company with an excellent track record for customer (developer) service, Telerik.  Not only that, JustCode has several other IDE productivity tools that make the deal even sweeter. • "bad mirror archive" : What should I put as the "mirror of ubuntu archive" on installation of ubuntu?

  I'm trying to set up ubuntu from my old macintosh laptop, but when it asks me to put in the "mirror of ubuntu archive" I run into problems. For the mirror, I put in mirror.anl.gov for the ubuntu archive mirror directory, i put in pub/ubuntu/ Then I leave the http proxy blank and hit "continue" It then tries to "download release files", which starts at 0%, and eventually jumps straight to 100% and then it presents me with an error of "bad mirror archive". Any advice? I never set up ubuntu before, and I'm really struggling with this step.

• Avoid apt-get update while installing softwares on ubuntu, possible?

  I want to install a 27KB lens( reddit-lens: here ) & this "apt-get update" is going to download 20MBs(!) of data for the same. I want to avoid this update bcoz i am on a limited bandwidth connection. I also tried to install .deb file(27KB) for this lens but it says "dependancy is not satisfiable gir1.2-unity-3.0". I went on to http://www.pkgs.org to get that package & there is no version available for ubuntu 12.04. What should I do? Can i install softwares without updating cache? Is that update necessary? Also installation of some softwares requires updating cache while others dont, why?

• Disable plugin in Firefox (acroread)

  I installed acroread from the repositories, and it has decided it should be the default plugin in Firefox, such that when I click on a pdf, it opens in a Firefox window. Unfortunately, it does not display (at least when in dual head mode). This should be simple, but I cannot disable the plugin. Under Firefox Edit - Preferences- Applications - pdf is set to "always ask" so I don't know why it uses acroread in the first place. Under Tools - Manage Content Plugins I see acroread is selected for pdf content. I have the option in the dropdown to search for a new plugin, but not to simply download the file. Typing about:config into the Firefox toolbar gives me a list of configuration options, but does not mention plugin.disable or acroread anywhere. How do I disable the plugin? I have Firefox 11.0 on Ubuntu 11.10

  It is now available for download. It says you need twice* as many bits as I have. Why would you need more bits to compile code? Afaik - You only need 64-bit if you want to run a system that has more than 4gigs of memory. Why would any flash game require more than 4 gigs of memory. The only system that is 64-bits and does not have 4gigs of memory that I can quickly recall is that hilarious Nintendo that came ages ago with a Motorola CPU.

• PHPForm Generate PDF Send to Email

  I'm a beginner in PHP I was wondering if this is easy to do or if i'd have to outsource this to a programmer - Basically when a user fills in the PHP Form and submits it I need this to generate as a PDF which will then email/attach to MY email and NOT the user who submitted this form. I have looked at tcpdf, fpdi but i dont think any of those scripts allow me to do this specifically as from what i heard it generates a download link for the user, and that is not what i need. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. Regards Tom

• Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests. • Unable to wake display with remote

  I'm running an HTPC (xbmc) without a keyboard/mouse attached, running oneiric. After some indeterminate amount of time, sometime between 1 and 12 hours, the display goes to sleep. The computer itself is not sleeping, I can still SSH to it from another computer. The remote will not wake the display. The IR receiver is working, as irw will show me the remote key presses. The only way to get my display back is to restart the display manager, lightdm in this case. Does anybody know a way to keep the display from going to sleep? I don't really need any power management at all considering that it connects to my TV and when I want my display to go to sleep, I turn off my TV.

• Installation of Ubuntu 13.04 seems to take forever

  I am about to install Ubuntu 13.04 on my AMD x64 machine and the installation of the lib packages seems to take forever. Is that a known issue? I know that it might take some time when checking to download packages from the Internet but this went through very fast. In the terminal-like view I can see, the system is just unpacking, installing, configuring etc. in a quite slow way. In the opening screen it reads: It just takes a few minutes (or something close to that). Again: Is that a normal behavior or am I doing something wrong and what could I do to speed up the process in case I'm running an installation again on another system?

• Acer Aspire One 722 broadcom 4313 wifi

  I had an Acer Aspire One 722 with the Atheros Wifi card and it worked fine on 11.04. So we bought 200 of them for our school. However these all came with the Broadcom BCM4313 wireless card and there are issues. It is using the brcmsmac driver and they connect initially. However after a time (sometimes just a few webpages) some of them lose connection. However, they still have an IP and network-manager says they are connected, but no pages load and you can't ping anything on the LAN or internet. A disconnect/reconnect can fix it, but sometimes a restart is required. It happens frequently so is a major issue. Lots of broadcom drivers are blacklisted: bcm43xx, b43, brcm80211. Any ideas or experiences with the broadcom4313 card? Please save these computers from a Windows fate!

• Why did Ubuntu and Windows start hanging mysteriously after I took a vacation?

  I installed Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7, after partitioning my HDD using Easeus partitioning manager. It was working perfectly, no problems, no data lost or corruption. Then I went away for 2 days and in my absence I don't know what happened in that period, now both Windows 7 and Ubuntu keep hanging continuously, like when you paint and change a brush it'll hang, I mean on very simple commands and I know my computer does not hang on such petty things. I use it for developing music and the specification are: Model: DELL-XPS Processor: Intel i5, 2.53 GHz RAM/Memory: 4GB Hard disk size: 500GB HDD Windows 7 partition: 417 GB Ubuntu Partition: 50 GB Please Help.
