• Implementing a multilanguage AI contest platform

  This is a followup to this question. To sum: I'm implementing an AI contest site, where each user may submit several AI implementations for different games. Think about Google AI Challenge but instead of just having a big event once a year, I would like it more on a league fashion, with all virtual players playing with each other every some close period of time. I want to support as many programming languages as possible. I've seen that contest sites (like codeforces) ask you to submit a source code and interact through stdin and stdout. The first question is: what is the best way of supporting multiple languages? As I see it, I can either ask people to upload some binary/script, and interact either through stdin/*stdout*, or sockets, or the file system; or ask people to submit source code, and wrap it with whatever is necessary for the interaction. I would like to skip the need to compile the code by myself (in the server, I mean), but I am willing to do it if its the "best" choice. I need to comunicate virtual players with each other, or even better, with some intermediary arbiter. The second question is regarding security. If I'm going to be running user code in my server, I want to ensure strict security conditions, like no file system access, no networking, etc. Otherwise it would be a safe heaven for hackers. I will be implementing the engine/arbiter in .NET. I would like to support at least C#, C++, Java and Python for the user's implementations. I'm willing to write interfaces for each of these languages to simplify the user interaction with the system. Thanks in advance.

• Web deploy (msdeploy), syncing everything but sites and pools (but include siteDefaults)

  Today I do the following to sync two webservers but skip all site configuration: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:webServer -dest:webServer,computerName=web25:8080 -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/sites -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/applicationPools However, this effectively also skip the siteDefaults, which I do like to sync (system.applicationHost/sites/siteDefaults) There doesn't seem to be a way to "include" a section, to override the skip directive. And there doesn't seem to be a way to sync only the siteDefaults section from applicationHost either, since source appHostConfig only seem to sync a specified site, and not siteDefaults. Maybe it is possible to "skip" using an Xpath expression or similar, to only skip the nodes, but include , but I find the documentation a bit confusing and my Xpath is rusty.

  I've read a few similar questions but wasn't clear. I have a small office (13) users and recently purchased a new single server (this is all I have to work with for now). Server specs Memory - 16GB Drives - 6 SCSI (2TB) PROCESSOR - DUAL QUAD I plan on making the Hyper-V host the DC and then 2 VMs, one for a file server and the other an application server. Question - since I am restricted to this single server, would it be a big issue making the Hyper-V host the domain controller? Your input greatly appreciated.

  I hope this is the correct site, I lose my way between the 4 sister sites :) Let me ask the question this way. all file systems I have seen before are hierarchical, that means a root directory, with some branched directories, and so on until we have files residing in these directories. except for AS/400 file structure, where it has a concept of a Library that serve somehow as a directory but one level only. Why not have directory-less filesystems where files are placed in a single location, but the file identifiers would be referenced by a database of tag/ file relation ships. This way there will be no need for symbolic links, one file may have multiple relations to multiple subjects, not only a single parent directory to contain. I hope the idea is clear.

• Java stored procedures in Oracle, a good idea?

  I'm considering using a Java stored procedure as a very small shim to allow UDP communication from a PL/SQL package. Oracle does not provide a UTL_UDP to match its UTL_TCP. There is a 3rd party XUTL_UDP that uses Java, but it's closed source (meaning I can't see how it's implemented, not that I don't want to use closed source). An important distinction between PL/SQL and Java stored procedures with regards to networking: PL/SQL sockets are closed when dbms_session.reset_package is called, but Java sockets are not. So if you want to keep a socket open to avoid the tear-down/reconnect costs, you can't do it in sessions that are using reset_package (like mod_plsql or mod_owa HTTP requests). I haven't used Java stored procedures in a production capacity in Oracle before. This is a very large, heavily-used database, and this particular shim would be heavily used as well (it serves as a UDP bridge between a PL/SQL RFC 5424 syslog client and the local rsyslog daemon). Am I opening myself up for woe and horror, or are Java stored procedures stable and robust enough for usage in 10g? I'm wondering about issues with the embedded JVM, the jit, garbage collection, or other things that might impact a heavily used database.

• What is a generic term for name/identifier? (as opposed to label)

  I need to refer to a number of things that have both an identifier value (used in code and configuration), and a human-readable label. These things include: database columns dropdown items subapplications objects stored in a dictionary I want two unambiguous terms. One to refer to the identifier/value/key. One to refer to the label. As you can see, I'm pretty settled on the latter :) For the former, identifier seems best (not everything is strictly a key, and value and name could refer to the label; although, identifier usually refers only to a variable name), but I would prefer to follow an established practice if there is one. Is there an established term for this? (Please provide a source.) If not, are there any examples of a choice from a significant source (Java APIs, MSDN, a big FLOSS project)? (I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or to English Language & Usage. I thought this was the more appropriate expert audience. Happy to migrate if not.)

  I've just received an upgraded Host machine, and am looking to push some of those advances to my workstations Guest OS(s). In particular, I used to have a single processor, with 2 cores, so my Guest OS only had 1/1. Now, I've got a single processor with 8 cores, so I'm curious about what would be recommended for my Guest OS now? 1 processor/4 cores? 2 processors/2 cores? 4 processors/1 core? My instinct says to stick with the number of physical processors (or less), but, is that based on reality? I spent a good while looking for an answer to this, but perhaps my google-karma isn't in my favor today.

• Firefox Master Password (ssh-agent)

  I use the master password feature of Firefox, and I also use SSH keys to login to a bunch of UNIX machines. For SSH, there is a very useful application called ssh-agent that runs in the background knowing the required information about unlocking the key so you don't have to type the question every single time you want to connect. I open and close Firefox a lot, so I was curious, is there a way to have Firefox run in the background (preferrably doing nothing, but the whole process would be fine I guess as well) so that I don't have to type my master password every single time I open Firefox? • How to extend selection in gnome-terminal?

  In a terminal I can select a single line, double clicking with the Left Mouse Button. With xterm, I can extend that selection clicking with the Right Mouse Button in the place I want to extend it. Then can I paste the whole selection with the Middle Mouse Button or paste it in other application. In gnome-terminal, it seems I can extend the selection clicking with the Left Mouse Button, but holding at the same time the Shift key. Visually, it seems the selection is done, but when clicking with the Middle Mouse button or pasting in other application, I only get the primary single line selection. How can I get the whole selection under gnome-terminal? Is it possible to use selections in gnome-terminal as xterm does? Cheers, Tomas.

  I currently use TrueCrypt to encrypt the hard drive in a Win7 laptop (everything in a single partition). I am looking to upgrade the hard drive to a model with significantly more storage capacity. I've had a look through the documentation but I couldn't see anything about this particular scenario. I assume I need to do something like the following: Remove the encryption from the existing drive. Clone the existing drive image onto the new hard drive. Physically install the new drive into the laptop. Resize the single partition to use all the space in the new drive. Encrypt all of the new bigger drive with TrueCrypt.

• MSDeploy - possible to call setAcl on multiple destinations in one go?

  I'm building a nice little continuous integration environment for our development team, based on TeamCity. It's working rather nicely, as it can build a mix of .NET and PHP projects, and push them to our internal and external platforms. I'm primarily using MsDeploy to push everything to the internal platform, as that's all IIS based. However, there's a number of builds where I need to set directory permissions on the destination directory. I can use the setAcl operator just fine, but that only seems to take a single destination as an argument. Therefore, if I need to alter the permissions on 5 destination directories, I need to call MsDeploy 5 times, which seems a lot of overhead. Is there a sensible way around this? Reading the documentation, I don't think MsDeploy takes more than a single argument for the setAcl operator, but could be wrong. Is there a better way for a build server to set multiple directory permissions in one go?

  I'm exploring a piece of code in Architecture Explorer in Visual Studio 2010 to study the relations between methods. I noticed a strange behavior. Take the following source code. It generates a hello message based on a template and a template engine, the template engine being a method (a sort of strategy pattern simplified at a maximum for demo purposes). public string GenerateHelloMessage(string personName) { return this.ApplyTemplate( this.DefaultTemplateEngine, this.GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate(), personName); } private string GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate() { return "Hello {0}!"; } public string ApplyTemplate( Func<string, string, string> templateEngine, string template, string personName) { return templateEngine(template, personName); } public string DefaultTemplateEngine(string template, string personName) { return string.Format(template, personName); } The graph generated from this code is this one: Change the first method from this: public string GenerateHelloMessage(string personName) { return this.ApplyTemplate( this.DefaultTemplateEngine, this.GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate(), personName); } to this: public string GenerateHelloMessage(string personName) { return this.ApplyTemplate( (a, b) => this.DefaultTemplateEngine(a, b), this.GenerateLocalizedHelloTemplate(), personName); } and the graph becomes: While semantically identical, those two versions of code produce different dependency graphs, and Architecture Explorer shows no trace of the lambda expression (while Visual Studio's code coverage, for example, shows them, as well as Code analysis seems to be able to understand that the link exists). • Where to put code documentation?

  I am currently using two systems to write code documentation (am using C++): Documentation about methods and class members are added next to the code, using the Doxygen format. On a server Doxygen is run on the sources so the output can be seen in a web browser Overview pages (describing a set of classes, the structure of the application, example code, ...) is added to a Wiki I personally think that this approach is easy because the documentation about members and classes is really close to the code, while the overview pages are really easy to edit in the Wiki (and it's also easy to add images, tables, ...). A web browser allows you to see both documentations. My co-worker now suggests to put everything in Doxygen, because we can then create one big help file with everything in it (using either Microsoft's HTML WorkShop or Qt Assistant). My concern is that editing Doxygen-style documentation is much harder (compared to Wiki), especially when you want to add tables, images, ... (or is there a 'preview' tool for Doxygen that doesn't require you to generate the code before you can see the result?) What do big open-source (or closed source) projects use to write their code documentation? Do they also split this up between Doxygen-style and a Wiki? Or do they use another system? What is the most appropriate way to expose the documentation? Via a Web server/browser, or via a big (several 100MB) help file? Which approach do you take when writing code documentation?

• Complex Release Vehicle Management

  I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

  I had to remove some file headers in a bigger project which were all of the form #region File Header /*[ Compilation unit ----------------------------------------------------------       Name            : Class1.cs       Language        : C#     Creation Date   :      Description     : -----------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ /*] END */ #endregion I know that would be a cool thing to write a simple C# program use a recursive file search, read all lines skip the first n lines and write the files back to disc. But I wanted to test things first before I ruin my source files with one little typo. There comes the Visual Studio Search and Replace in Files dialog into the game. I can test my regular expression to do a multiline match with the Find button before actually breaking anything. And if something goes wrong I have the Undo button.   There is a nice blog post from Paulo Morgado online who deals with Multiline Regular expressions. The Visual Studio Regular expressions are non standard so you have to adapt your usual Regex know how to the other patterns. The pattern I cam finally up with is \#region File Header:b*(.*\n)@\#endregion The Regular expression can be read as \#region File Header Match “#region File Header” \# Escapes the # character since it is a quantifier. :b* After this none or more spaces or tabs can follow (:b stands for space or tab) (.*\n)@ Match anything across lines in a non greedy way (the @ character makes it non greedy) to prevent matching too much until the #endregion somewhere in our source file. \#endregion Match everything until “#endregion” is found I had always knew that Visual Studio can do it but I never bothered to learn the non standard Regex syntax. This is powerful and it is inside Visual Studio since 2005!

• Quarterly E-Business Suite Upgrade Recommendations: October 2012 Edition

  I've previously published advice on the general priorities for applying EBS updates.  But what are your top priorities for major upgrades to EBS and its technology stack components? Here is a summary of our latest upgrade recommendations for E-Business Suite updates and technology stack components.  These quarterly recommendations are based upon the latest updates to Oracle's product strategies, support deadlines, and newly-certified releases.  Upgrade Recommendations for October 2012 EBS 11i users should upgrade to 12.1.3, or -- if staying on 11i -- should be on the minimum 11i patching baseline, EBS 12.0 users should upgrade to 12.1.3, or -- if staying on 12.0 -- should be on the minimum 12.0 patching baseline, EBS 12.1 users should upgrade to 12.1.3. Oracle Database 10gR2 and 11gR1 users should upgrade to 11gR2 11.2.0.3. EBS 12 users of Oracle Single Sign-On 10g users should migrate to Oracle Access Manager 11g 11.1.1.5. EBS 11i users of  Oracle Single Sign-On 10g users should migrate to Oracle Access Manager 10g 10.1.4.3. Oracle Internet Directory 10g users should upgrade to Oracle Internet Directory 11g 11.1.1.6. Oracle Discoverer users should migrate to Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE), Oracle Business Intelligence Applications (OBIA), or Discoverer 11g 11.1.1.6. Oracle Portal 10g users should migrate to Oracle WebCenter 11g 11.1.1.6 or upgrade to Portal 11g 11.1.1.6.
