• Is it possible to creating a Service without starting it?

  Hello all, I wonder, is it possible to create a Service, set some data, and then start it? I haven't come across a thread specific to this problem, so I would like to know if it is possible (if it is known of course). My problem is that I have a Service which listens to a DatagramSocket, but the socket in question needs to be set after creation, but before the start of the Service. The setting of the socket happens through the use of a Broadcast (I broadcast 2 Strings which hold the IP-Address & Port and the BroadcastReceiver then constructs a socket for me). When the Service is started, a Thread will start to run and listen to the supposedly created socket. This, sadly, doesn't happen. The socket will remain null and I can't set it when the Thread is running (This is another issue I hope to tackle in the future, if anybody got any ideas about this, please notify me). So, is what I want possible, or should I come up with another construct for achieving this goal?

• Android preferencesActivity setDefaultValue() not working?

  I'm extending PreferenceActivity for my settings screen. In this preference activity i have a couple of preferences one of which is custom made. The problem is as follows: in this custom preference (which extends from ListPreference) i want to be able to set the default value, so i override the setDefaultValue() method. In this method i do some parsing so it'll take the correct value. When i'm trying to read this value with the getValue() function it just returns null. So i figured, what happens when i just put some hardcoded value in there (you know, maybe i did something wrong, wouldn't be the first time). Well, i still get null back. Any ideas what i'm doing wrong? Edit: Setting the defaultValue in the xml file isn't really an option because the values aren't known until i retrieve them. I made a workaround: When app is started for the first time: get data Set the values in the preference. This way i set the default preference when i'm collection the data

  Hi, How do I set a cookie in a LiftFilter.doFilter method? • PHP error logging - can I log all ofg the site's error to a single file?

  hi, in PHP.INI, I can set the variable "error_log" and it is currently set to "error_log", which manes one file of that name in each directory Do you know ... if I set it to "public_html/error_log" - will I get only one single error log file? Any other way to do so? I really just want a single site-wide error file to check, rather than one on each sub-directory. For bonus marks, can I send myself an email each time a new entry is added to the file? Left as an exercise for the reader - can I ignore some "errors" which aren't really?

• Settings cell selected background view removes backgroundview

• Performance of Serialized Objects in C++

  Hi Everyone, I'm wondering if there is a fast way to dump an STL set to disk and then read it back later. The internal structure of a set is a binary tree, so if I serialize it naively, when I read it back the program will have to go though the process of inserting each element again. I think this is slow even if it is read back in correct order, correct me if I am wrong. Is there a way to "dump" the memory containing the set into disk and then read it back later? That is, keep everything in binary format, thus avoiding the re-insertion. Do the boost serialization tools do this? Thanks! • Can I stop SQL*Plus from displaying "connected" when I have a "connect" in a script?

  I have a few sql scripts that I need to run via SQL*Plus. These scripts connect several times as different users with a connect user_01/pass_01@db_01. Now, each time the script does such a connect, it confirms the successful connection with a connected. This is distracting and I want to turn it off. I can achieve what I want with a set termout off connect user_01/pass_01@db_01 set termout on Is there a more elegant solution to my problem? Note, it doesn't help to permanently set termout off at the start of the script since I need to know if a command didn't run successfully.

• Rails gives wrong headers after upgrade 2.3.5 -> 2.3.8

  I just upgraded from rails 2.3.5 to rails 2.3.8, but now my redirects are not working properly. I get the following as the response HTTP Headers: HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily Date: Wed, 02 Jun 2010 09:40:39 GMT Content-Length: 93 Content-Type: text/html whereas I got previous: HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily Connection: close Date: Wed, 02 Jun 2010 09:41:18 GMT Set-Cookie: _session_id=<correct id>; path=/ Status: 302 Found Location: <correct url> Cache-Control: no-cache Server: Mongrel 1.1.5 Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Content-Length: 93 Anyone knows how to fix this? Despite the fact that the redirect is not working, the login-cookie is not set too (but I think, this is both related somehow). I have already tried to override redirect_to in order to set response.headers['Location'] etc., but they did not appear in the response.

  So my co-worker felt it necessary to go onto my development box and do some code changes, then submit his work to subversion. I never set the commit message editor, and all of a sudden, one day I forgot to add the -m handle and apparently he set the default editor to emacs. Being that I don't know the first thing about emacs and prefer vim myself, how do I go about changing the default editor for svn commands to vim after it's already been set. I deleted the .subversion directory under the home directory, and it still prompts me.

  I would like to create a StringVar() that looks something like this: someText = "The Spanish Inquisition" #Here's a normal variable whose value I will change eventually TkEquivalent = StringVar() #and here's the StringVar() TkEquivalent.set(string(someText)) #and here I set it equal to the normal variable. When someText changes, this variable will too... HOWEVER: TkEquivalent.set("Nobody Expects " + string(someText)) If I do this, the StringVar() will no longer automatically update! How can I include that static text and still have the StringVar() update to reflect changes made to someText? Thanks for your help.

My problem is that each object in the list can have a separate type, so that the populated list could contain something like this: { Field<DateTime>, Field<int>, Field<double>, Field<DateTime> } So how do I declare that? List<Field<?>> (I'd like to stay as typesafe as possible, so I don't want to use an ArrayList).

• Centering An Inline-Block DIV

  Does anybody know how to center align a DIV that has the display set to inline-block? I cannot set the display to block because I have a background image that needs to be repeated, and it needs to expand based on the content. It sits inside of a parent div, in which is larger when it comes to width. So all in all. Does anyone have a fix to center align a div with the display set to inline-block?   Hi guys, i am familiar with memcached and eager loading, but neither seems to solve the problem i am facing. My main performance lag comes from hundreds of data retrieval calls from the database. The tricky thing is that I do not know which set of users i need to retrieve until i have several steps of computation. I can refactor my code, but i was wondering how you experts handle this situation? I think it should be a fairly common situation def newsfeed - find out which users i need - retrieve those users via DB - find out which events happened for these users - for each of those events - retrieve new set of users - find out which groups are relevant - for each of those groups - retrieve new set of users - etc, etc end

  M iPhone app is using the MFMailComposeViewController class to send an in-app email with an attachment. The app will only attempt to display the mail composer dialog if the "canSendMail" method of class MFMailComposeViewController returns true (YES). Specifically, if the following method returns YES, it shows the mail composer, otherwise the user is presented with an error alert dialog stating that there are no email accounts set up on the device: - (BOOL)canDeviceSendEmail { Class mailClass = (NSClassFromString(@"MFMailComposeViewController")); return mailClass != nil && [mailClass canSendMail]; } A team of testers have reported that they get this error alert dialog, even when email accounts are set up on the device. You can check that executing php -i | grep safe_mode from the command line i've checked the first two settings. i don't know whether php-cli is enabled or not..i'm using php5..how do i enable it, without messing with other php packages?

• Can an Oracle user get a list of its own running sessions without access to v$session?

  I have an application that runs a process and I only want one process to run at a time. Some options are: Use an object lock to prevent subsequent processes running. This would be fine, but I want the calling session to return immediately and not wait for the running session to complete. Use a custom Y/N to set whether a process is running or not. I set a "Y" flag at the start of the process and set it to "N" when it finishes or fails. Also fine but feels like I'm re-inventing the wheel and doesn't feel like the way to go. It also falls short if the running session is killed as the flag stays at "Y". Use dbms_application_info.set_module This approach seems the most robust, but if I'm to know there's an existing running process I think I need to be able to query v$session and I don't want this application to have such wide access. Any ideas?

• New replicaset resident memory is larger than the existing sets

  From the mongodb tutorial of how to resync a set, I wipe all the files in /data/db and restart the mongod process to resync the data. Everything looks ok, I get the same number of documents as the existing two sets(primary and one secondary). However, when I check the memory on MMS. it shows me my new resynced set/mongod process has a different memory status value than the other two. For existing twos using db.serverStatus.mem shows like the following: "mem" : { "bits" : 64, "resident" : 239, "virtual" : 66348, "supported" : true, "mapped" : 32865, "mappedWithJournal" : 65730 } however, the new resynced set shows like: "mem" : { "bits" : 64, "resident" : 1239, "virtual" : 52447, "supported" : true, "mapped" : 25700, "mappedWithJournal" : 51400 } the resynced resident memory is 6-10 times more than the existing ones. I wouder if it is normal because all data comes in suddenly during the resyncing?? and even virtual and mapped value are different too. Can anyone explain?? thanks

  I have set up a Core Data model that includes an entity, Item with a 1-M relationship with the abstract entity Place, so that an item has many places. There are several entities with the parent set to Place. I want to set up several UI elements depending on the descendent place types. I have a loop that looks something like this: for (Place *place in item.places) { } ... but I'm not sure how to detect what type the place is, and how to cast it to the proper type so that I can access its properties.   I know how to accomplish my task with .NET, but I wanted to do this just in SQL. I need to loop through all of the rows where the primary key is somewhat arbitrary. It can be a number or a series of letters, and probably any number of unusual things. I know I could do something like this... DECLARE @numRows INT SET @numRows = (SELECT COUNT(pkField) FROM myTable) DECLARE @I INT SET @I = 1 WHILE (@I <= @numRows) BEGIN --Do what I need to here SET @I = @I + 1 END ...if my rows were indexed in a contiguous fashion, but I don't know enough about SQL to do that if they're not. I keep coming across the use of "cursors," but I come across just as much reading about avoiding cursors. I found this SO solution but I'm not sure if that's what I'm needing? I appreciate any ideas.
