• steam won't open after install

  I've looked all over the place for a solution but no one seems to be getting the same error codes as me. • Remote Access to MSSQL Database From 1&1 Hosting [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I just paid ($6 /month) for shared Windows hosting through 1&1 hosting. I was having trouble connecting to my database from home, so I sent an email to support. I received the following response: As we checked your concern here in our end, please be advised that due to limitation of Shared Hosting services, there is no option to connect the database to your SQL Management Studio or through Visual Studio. It is only possible for Dedicated Server package. You may only access the database using MyLittleAdmin at the Control Panel. A dedicated server is like $200 per month! What is the point of having database access only through a web console? I feel I am missing something here, or maybe the support agent is. Is there a way to access my MS SQL database on their servers through Visual Studio or SQL Management Studio from my machine? If not, is there a web host who allows this for less than $200 a month? EDIT: Marked as duplicate... I'm not asking for a list of web hosts, I'm asking how to remotely connect to my MSSQL database through 1&1's services.

  I have a client who is using Lotus Domino for their web application/server platform. The client has two "web developers" who are more comfortable with Lotus Domino than more mainstream tools and technologies and are not enthusiastic about making a switch. I have been asked to provide an assessment of why it may be prudent to migrate to a different web application platform. I would be particularly interested in understanding deficiencies related to the platform as I have very little knowledge of Domino but am very familiar with other platforms. In addition to the fact that Apache has over 70% of web server market, IIS over 21%, and Lotus almost 0%, what other reasons would you give for moving away from this platform?

• Which logs will tell me about the Touchpad and Keyboard locking up?

  I have an Asus N53SM laptop that I leave running for several weeks at a time. I never put it in hibernate or suspend, I only close the lid when I'm not using it. After a few days or weeks of running, the touchpad and keyboard will Both lock up (at the same time) for no apparent reason. I could be just surfing the internet when it happens. The touchpad and keyboard seem to only lock up when I'm actively using the laptop (not when idle), which may mean it's related to something I press, but I'm not sure? The touchpad never locks or unlocks when Pressing FN and the designated touchpad lock key (it does not seem to work on Linux). While the touchpad and keyboard are locked, I am able to plug in my USB mouse and successfully use it to control the screen cursor. I can also remotely get into the system with vnc and ssh, everything seems to run fine there as well. No processes appear out of control. It's just the laptops physical touchpad and keyboard that are locking up. How might I go about diagnosing this problem? What system logs to look at? (anything specific to look for in them?) Perhaps I should try reloading some modules? Any thing else I should inspect?

• What are the "software" requirements for a 3D video?

  Today, looking for the technical explanations about MPEG4, I saw that it can implement the VRML rendering for a 3D video. This makes me wondering about the "software" requirements to make or to see a 3D video. I mean, assuming that I have all the "hardware" requirements(3D monitor, VGA, 3D-camera, etc), what should I need to make and see 3D videos looking over the "software" side? Must I need to make it on MPEG4 instead MPEG1 or MPEG2 because of the VRML support? May I need a specifc 3D codec to open and see 3D videos?? Until today, I believed that a 3D video was just a regular/ordinary video composed of 2 "overlapping layers". PS: This is the first time I'm researching about technical explanations/references about MPEG standards and 3D videos, any help or basic explanations will help.

• Flexible classroom environments (OS, Office)

  I work in the IT department of a training center, we still offer XP and Office 2003 trainings but also offer Vista and Win7 and Office 2007. Currently, we use VMs on VMware Server but this is obviously not a superb choice. We're thinking of implementing something like VDI (brainstorm phase, we hardly have any details) but I decided to check here if people would have some clever alternatives. Requirements: * Flexible when it comes to deployment * Centralized management would be a big plus * Allow for different software, whether they be compatible or not (all of office except for outlook can be installed simultaneously. for outlook you need to choose between 2003 or 2007) * Allow for different OS We have a big enough budget to implement a proper SAN environment to accomodate the virtualization of the solution, whatever kind it may be. A support contract will probably be necessary as well, because we need to be able to offer quick solutions to problems and with only 2 sysadmins that is simply impossible to guarantee.

• LINQ: Single vs. SingleOrDefault

  Like all other LINQ API methods that extract a scalar value from a sequence, Single has a companion SingleOrDefault. The documentation of SingleOrDefault states that it returns a single, specific element of a sequence of values, or a default value if no such element is found, although, in my opinion, it should state that it returns a single, specific element of a sequence of values, or a default value if no such element is found. Nevertheless, what this method does is return the default value of the source type if the sequence is empty or, like Single, throws an exception if the sequence has more than one element. I received several comments to my last post saying that SingleOrDefault could be used to avoid an exception. Well, it only “solves” half of the “problem”. If the sequence has more than one element, an exception will be thrown anyway. In the end, it all comes down to semantics and intent. If it is expected that the sequence may have none or one element, than SingleOrDefault should be used. If it’s not expect that the sequence is empty and the sequence is empty, than it’s an exceptional situation and an exception should be thrown right there. And, in that case, why not use Single instead? In my opinion, when a failure occurs, it’s best to fail fast and early than slow and late. Other methods in the LINQ API that use the same companion pattern are: ElementAt/ElementAtOrDefault, First/FirstOrDefault and Last/LastOrDefault.

• C# wpf helix scale based mesh parenting using Transform3DGroup

  I am using https://helixtoolkit.codeplex.com/ as a 3D framework. I want to move black mesh relative to the green mesh as shown in the attached image below. I want to make green mesh parent to the black mesh as the change in scale of the green mesh also will result in motion of the black mesh. It could be partial parenting or may be more. I need 3D rotation and 3D transition + transition along green mesh's length axis for the black mesh relative to the green mesh itself. Suppose a variable green_mesh_scale causing scale for the green mesh along its length axis. The black mesh will use that variable in order to move along green mesh's length axis. How to go about it. I've done as follows: GeometryModel3D GreenMesh, BlackMesh; ... double green_mesh_scale = e.NewValue; Transform3DGroup forGreen = new Transform3DGroup(); Transform3DGroup forBlack = new Transform3DGroup(); forGreen.Children.Add(new ScaleTransform3D(new Vector3D(1, green_mesh_scale , 1))); // ... transforms for rotation n transition GreenMesh.Transform = forGreen ; forBlack = forGreen; forBlack.Children.Add(new TranslateTransform3D(new Vector3D(0, green_mesh_scale, 0))); BlackMesh.Transform = forBlack; The problem with this is the scale transform will also be applied to the black mesh. I think i just need to avoid the scale part. I tried keeping all the transforms but scale, on another Transform3DGroup variable but that also not behaving as expected. Can MatrixTransform3D be used here some how? Also please suggest if this question can be posted somewhere else in stackexchange.

• Cannot install icaclient due to problem with ia32-libs

  I have a problem installing the package icaclient on 13.10 Saucy Salamander 64bit. It seems that there is a problem with ia32-libs and other dependencies. marc@PinballWizard:~$ sudo dpkg -i Downloads/icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb [sudo] password for marc: Selecting previously unselected package icaclient. (Reading database ... 179461 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking icaclient (from .../icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb) ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of icaclient: icaclient depends on ia32-libs; however: Package ia32-libs is not installed. icaclient depends on lib32z1; however: Package lib32z1 is not installed. icaclient depends on lib32asound2; however: Package lib32asound2 is not installed. dpkg: error processing icaclient (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: icaclient Hence, other workarounds seem not to work. I followed the instructions here - and for the last two Ubuntu releases it was surely no problem. When I try to install ia32-libs I get the following issue: marc@PinballWizard:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package ia32-libs is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0 E: Package 'ia32-libs' has no installation candidate Is there any possibility to install icaclient? • Why does Windows run CHKDSK on every boot?

  Every time I turn on my PC, I get the following message: Checking file system on E: The type of the file systen is NTFS. One of your disks need to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Windows will now check the disk. CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... 0 percent completed I allow CHKDSK to to complete, but Windows does not load. This message appears every time I boot my computer. Could someone explain me why this message appears and what I should do to make it disappear?

• How do I install a newer version of GTK in Ubuntu without replacing the current one?

  I am trying to compile file-roller from git, but running autogen.sh gives me this error configure: error: Package requirements (gtk+-3.0 >= 2.91.1) were not met: No package 'gtk+-3.0' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GTK_CFLAGS and GTK_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. I am running Ubuntu Maverick and don't wish to completely replace my current version of gtk, glib, etc. I have tried to compile GTK using the --prefix argument of autogen.sh, but this gives me a similar error about my version of glib. How can I successfully compile file-roller using these new libraries without borking my install?

  The current release of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, though in technology preview, brings Oracle ADF binding to the Eclipse IDE. You can download the Software from the link below: Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (12.1.1.1.0) Technical Preview New June 2012 Certified on Windows 7/XP/Vista, MacOS, and Linux. Supported on JDK 6. For many Eclipse users, ADF is new and therefore I expect them to need guidance and help in case they run into issues they don't know how to recover from. Similar, ADF users familiar with Oracle JDeveloper that want to give OEPE a try, will find things different in Eclipse and thus may have questions.  For both audiences I suggest to post issues to the OEPE forum on the Oracle Technology Network: I'll extend my OTN monitoring to include the OEPE forum on a daily basis to learn about developer needs, requirements and - of course - to catch bugs that need to be filed. From my side this is a part-time involvement, which means that the more ADF questions show on the forum, the more help I could need in answering them. The OTN forum for JDeveloper in my opnion wouldn't be the right place to go to unless the question is a generic ADF question that is not dependent on the integration in Eclipse. • Is there a webproxy via email?

  This is probably a bit weird, and I don't think it exists yet. I'm basically asking for a program that, upon receiving a request via email, downloads a html page and sends it via email, possibly changing the links inside the page into outgoing emails to this program asking for another page. This is certainly one of the most crude ways of accessing the web, and obviously fails at anything beyond the most basic stuff. But it may still be useful to those that can send email, but can't access the web due to company policy or whatever reason. In the (likely) case this does not exist, I'd be interested to write such a proxy.

• Fix invalid objects and components - BEFORE you upgrade!

  We are currently running a Tech Challange Workshop with 25 Oracle consultants and support folks from all over EMEA. We call it Tech Challange because we seperate these experts having between 5 and 20 years of Oracle experience into 5 groups - and each group has to complete their special challange such as moving a database from 10.2 to Exadata V2 or upgrading from single instance 10.2 to Real Application Clusters 11.2 with the new Grid Infrastructure. Actually we start this training with a bit presentation pieces about upgrades, Real Application Testing and Golden Gate. And one topic I always point out: Keep your database tidy before the upgrade!!! Clean up all invalid objects - especially in SYS and SYSTEM user schema BEFORE you upgrade. Use utlrp.sql to recompile invalid objects. Use Note:753041.1 to diagnose and fix invalid components. Do this always BEFORE you start the upgrade. Even if it may take some time. Otherwise your upgrade could fails or significant parts of the database packages could be invalid after the upgrade as well. I just came across this today as one group had ~240 invalid objects in the database - and due to the fact that the original system was still there could proof that the objects had been invalid before. Good job, BUT ... :-)

• Implementation details of database synchronisation API

  I want to achieve a database synchronisation between my server database and a client application. The server would run MySQL and the applications may run different database technologies, their implementation isn't important. I have a MySQL database online and web accessible via an API I wrote in PHP (just a detail). My client application ships with a copy of the online data. As time passes my goal is to check for any changes in the online database and make these updates available to the client app via an API call, by sending a date to an API endpoint corresponding to the last date the app was updated, the response would be a JSON filled with all new objects and updated objects, and delete IDs, this makes possible to update the local store appropriately. Essentially I want to do this: http://dbconvert.com/synchronization.php My question is about the implementation details. Would I need to add a column to my database tables with a "last modified" date? Since the client app could be very out of date if it's been offline for a long time, does that also mean I shouldn't delete data from the online database but instead have another column called "delete" set to 1 and a modified date updated appropriately? Would my SQL query simply check for all data with a modified date superior then the date passed into the API request by the client? I feel like there's a lot more to it then having a ton of dates everywhere. And also, worry that I will need to persist a lot of old data in order to ensure that old versions of the client app always have the opportunity to delete parts of their data when they are able to sync.

• AABB Sweeping, algorithm to solve "stacking box" problem

  I'm currently working on a simple AABB collision system and after some fiddling the sweeping of a single box vs. another and the calculation of the response velocity needed to push them apart works flawlessly. Now on to the new problem, imagine I'm having a stack of boxes which are falling towards a ground box which isn't moving: Each of these boxes has a vertical velocity for the "gravity" value, let's say this velocity is 5. Now, the result is that they all fall into each other: The reason is obvious, since all the boxes have a downward velocity of 5, this results in no collisions when calculating the relative velocity between the boxes during sweeping. Note: The red ground box here is static (always 0 velocity, can utilize spatial partitioning ), and all dynamic static collisions are resolved first, thus the fact that the boxes stop correctly at this ground box. So, this seems to be simply an issue with the order the boxes are sweept against each other. I imagine that sorting the boxes based on their x and y velocities and then sweeping these groups correctly against each other may resolve this issues. So, I'm looking for algorithms / examples on how to implement such a system.   Part 1 of “Troubleshooting EBS Discovery Issues”, which was posted on May 17th, focused on the diagnostics associated with the initial discovery of an EBS instances (e.g., Forms servers, APPL_TOPs, databases, etc.).Part 2 focuses on verifying parameters of the Change Management features, also called "Pack Diagnostics, specifically for Customization Manager, Patch Manager, Setup Manager, Automated Cloning, and User Monitoring.  As stated in the first post, there can be numerous reasons that Discovery fails - credentials, file-level permissions, patch levels - just to name a few.The Discovery Wizard can be accessed from the EBS homepage.  From the home page, click "Pack Diagnostics"Click "Create" to define the diagnostic processProvide the required inputs; Name, Module (i.e., Customization Manager, Patch Manager, Setup Manager, Automated Cloning, and User Monitoring), Show Details (typically "All"), and Category (typically check both Generic and User Specific).  Add the appropriate targets.Once the diagnostic process has completed, view the results.  Click on "Succeeded" or "Failed" in the Status column.Expand the entire tree and click on each "Succeeded/Failed" status to see the results of each test within that task.Sample output verifying o/s user name and required patches Additional sample output showing a failed testComplete descriptions of, as well as recommended corrective actions for, all of the diagnostic tests that are run in EM 12c is found in this spreadsheet.  Additional information can be found in the Application Management Pack User Guide.

• Windows 8 scroll lag

  Don't have an issue with the desktop experience, but when it comes to the apps, scrolling in some of them is impossible to use correctly. Very laggy and jumpy, which is surprising because my computer has relatively high specs, only a year old. Scrolling using the manual scroll bar has no lag whatsoever it's simply whenever I use my touchpad. Maybe it's a touchpad issue? or more likely windows 8 as it seems fine in desktop view for scrolling? Any ideas where the problem may lie? Thanks

• How can I make fsck run non-interactively at boot time?

  I have a headless Ubuntu 12.04 server in a datacenter 1500 miles away. Twice now on reboot the system decided it had to fsck. Unfortunately Ubuntu ran fsck in interactive mode, so I had to ask someone at my datacenter to go over, plug in a console, and press the Y key. How do I set it up so that fsck runs in non-interactive mode at boot time with the -y or -p (aka -a) flag? If I understand Ubuntu's boot process correctly, init invokes mountall which in turn invokes fsck. However I don't see any way to configure how fsck is invoked. Is this possible? (To head off one suggestion; I'm aware I can use tune2fs -i 0 -c 0 to prevent periodic fscks. That may help a little but I need the system to try to come back up even if it had a real reason to fsck, say after a power failure.) In response to followup questions, here's the pertinent details of my /etc/fstab. I don't believe I've edited this at all from what Ubuntu put there. • Movember 2012

  If you were lucky enough to visit one of the Oracle Dublin offices during the month November you may have noticed a bunch of mustached merchants. If you thought the mustache was the newest hair fashion in Ireland you were wrong. These guys were the Mo Bro’s and proud members of MOracle, our Movember 2012 team. The aim of Movember is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, especially prostate cancer. To raise these funds, men don't shave their upper lips for a whole month and get sponsored for it by friends, family and colleagues. To highlight the importance of supporting this cause, take a look at these statistics: •             1 out of 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their life. •             This year more than 2,000 new cases of disease will be diagnosed. •             1 out of 3 men will be diagnosed with cancer during their life. It was a long and heavy month for all the Mo Bro’s, but in the end the effort has paid off. Under the leadership of team captain Jimmy this team managed to raise over €4,400  and was ranked #34 out of 1142 Irish Movember teams. The team couldn't have done it without the constant support of our colleagues and sponsors. Many thanks to all of you! We are very happy to have raised money and awareness for men’s health. On top of that we are also happy to have raised awareness for the most underrated and abandoned piece of man’s hair… the mustache. This is just the beginning; soon many men will proudly wear this fashionable look again!
