• How are Reads Distributed in a Workload

  People have uploaded nearly one millions rows of trace data to TraceTune.  That’s enough data to start to look at the results in aggregate.  The first thing I want to look at is logical reads.  This is the easiest metric to identify and fix. When you upload a trace, I rank each statement based on the total number of logical reads.  I also calculate each statement’s percentage of the total logical reads.  I do the same thing for CPU, duration and logical writes.  When you view a statement you can see all the details like this: This single statement consumed 61.4% of the total logical reads on the system while we were tracing it.  I also wanted to see the distribution of reads across statements.  That graph looks like this: On average, the highest ranked statement consumed just under 50% of the reads on the system.  When I tune a system, I’m usually starting in one of two modes: this “piece” is slow or the whole system is slow.  If a given piece (screen, report, query, etc.) is slow you can usually find the specific statements behind it and tune it.  You can make that individual piece faster but you may not affect the whole system. When you’re trying to speed up an entire server you need to identity those queries that are using the most disk resources in aggregate.  Fixing those will make them faster and it will leave more disk throughput for the rest of the queries. Here are some of the things I’ve learned querying this data: The highest ranked query averages just under 50% of the total reads on the system. The top 3 ranked queries average 73% of the total reads on the system. The top 10 ranked queries average 91% of the total reads on the system. Remember these are averages across all the traces that have been uploaded.  And I’m guessing that people mainly upload traces where there are performance problems so your mileage may vary. I also learned that slow queries aren’t the problem.  Before I wrote ClearTrace I used to identify queries by filtering on high logical reads using Profiler.  That picked out individual queries but those rarely ran often enough to put a large load on the system. If you look at the execution count by rank you’d see that the highest ranked queries also have the highest execution counts.  The graph would look very similar to the one above but flatter.  These queries don’t look that bad individually but run so often that they hog the disk capacity. The take away from all this is that you really should be tuning the top 10 queries if you want to make your system faster.  Tuning individually slow queries will help those specific queries but won’t have much impact on the system as a whole.

  The topic is really not new but since it’s the second time in few days that I had to explain it different customers, I think it’s worth to make a post out of it. Many times developers would like to insert a new row in a table or, if the row already exists, update it with new data. MySQL has a specific statement for this action, called REPLACE: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replace.html or the INSERT …. ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE option: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/insert-on-duplicate.html With SQL Server you can do the very same using a more standard way, using the MERGE statement, with the support of Row Constructors. • Sql Table Refactoring Challenge

  Ive been working a bit on cleaning up a large table to make it more efficient.  I pretty much know what I need to do at this point, but I figured Id offer up a challenge for my readers, to see if they can catch everything I have as well as to see if Ive missed anything.  So to that end, I give you my table: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[lq_ActivityLog]( [ID] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [PlacementID] [int] NOT NULL, [CreativeID] [int] NOT NULL, [PublisherID] [int] NOT NULL, [CountryCode] [nvarchar](10) NOT NULL, [RequestedZoneID] [int] NOT NULL, [AboveFold] [int] NOT NULL, [Period] [datetime] NOT NULL, [Clicks] [int] NOT NULL, [Impressions] [int] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_lq_ActivityLog2] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [Period] ASC, [PlacementID] ASC, [CreativeID] ASC, [PublisherID] ASC, [RequestedZoneID] ASC, [AboveFold] ASC, [CountryCode] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY] And now some assumptions and additional information: The table has 200,000,000 rows currently PlacementID ranges from 1 to 5000 and should support at least 50,000 CreativeID ranges from 1 to 5000 and should support at least 50,000 PublisherID ranges from 1 to 500 and should support at least 50,000 CountryCode is a 2-character ISO standard (e.g. US) and there is a country table with an integer ID already.  There are < 300 rows. RequestedZoneID ranges from 1 to 100 and should support at least 50,000 AboveFold has values of 1, 0, or 1 only. Period is a date (no time). Clicks range from 0 to 5000. Impressions range from 0 to 5000000. The table is currently write-mostly.  Its primary purpose is to log advertising activity as quickly as possible.  Nothing in the rest of the system reads from it except for batch jobs that pull the data into summary tables. Heres the current information on the database tables size: Design Goals This table has been in use for about 5 years and has performed very well during that time.  The only complaints we have are that it is quite large and also there are occasionally timeouts for queries that reference it, particularly when batch jobs are pulling data from it.  Any changes should be made with an eye toward keeping write performance optimal  while trying to reduce space and improve read performance / eliminate timeouts during read operations. Refactor There are, I suggest to you, some glaringly obvious optimizations that can be made to this table.  And Im sure there are some ninja tweaks known to SQL gurus that would be a big help as well.  Ill post my own suggested changes in a follow-up post for now feel free to comment with your suggestions. • XNA 4.0: 2D Camera Y and X are going in wrong direction

  I asked this question on stackoverflow but assumed this might be a better area to ask it as well for a more informed answer. My problem is that I am trying to create a camera class and have it so that my camera follows the proper RHS, however the Y axis seems to be inverted since on the screen the 0 starts at the top. • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? No - Crash Yes - Works, but in Display tab: DirectDraw Acceleration: Disabled Direct3D Acceleration: Not Available AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available If I click "Run 64-bit DxDiag", all three are "Enabled". I should also note that I've tried the following steps as Microsoft suggests, but I'm not able to do so as the "Change Settings" button is disabled. Some programs run very slowly—or not at all—unless Microsoft DirectDraw or Direct3D hardware acceleration is turned on. To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled. If not, try turning on hardware acceleration. Click to open Screen Resolution. Click Advanced settings. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full. • Can't Access TFS 2010 Beta 2 from Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 when domain joined

  I'm experimenting with an installation of TFS 2010 Beta 2 on a virtual machine under VirtualBox running Windows Server 2008. When I've got the server in a workgroup, I can connect to it from Visual Studio just fine, as long as I provide credentials for a local user on the server machine when prompted by the "Connect to Team Foundation Server" dialog. The desktop I'm running Visual Studio on is joined to a domain. However, when I join the server to the domain, I can no longer connect to it from Visual Studio. I get a pretty generic error message: "TF31002 - Unable to connect to team foundation server". It gives me several different possible problems, including an incorrect address or an incorrect username and password. I've already added the domain Windows identity with which I'm logged on the the desktop to the TFS Admins group on the server, so I don't think it's a username/password problem. I've also tried putting the literal IP address of the server in the dialog address box instead of the machine name, but still no dice. I made sure that network discovery was enabled on the server, too, and can navigate to "\\webserver2008" in Windows Explorer without any problems. Shouldn't be a firewall problem, since the TFS install creates the appropriate exceptions in Windows Firewall. It's all a bit confusing, since it seems to work when the server is in a workgroup. Note: I'm a dev, not an admin, so there are many subtleties of server administration with which I'm not familiar. • IIS 7 - 403 Access Denied error on wwwroot

  Hi, I'm trying to setup a redirect from http://mail.mydomain.com to https://mail.mydomain.com/owa. I've been unsuccessful in doing this by using IIS's HTTP Redirect so I looked to other options. The one I settled on is to create a default document in the wwwroot folder to handle the redirect. I created a file called index.aspx (and added index.aspx to the list of default documents) and put the following code in it: <script runat="server"> private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently"; Response.AddHeader("Location","https://mail.mydomain.com/owa"); } </script> Instead of getting a redirect I get: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. I've been trying to find an answer to this but have been unsuccessful so far. One thing I did try was to add the Everyone group to wwwroot with read access. No change. The AppPool for Default Web Site is DefaultAppPool and the Identity is ApplicationPoolIdentity. (I don't know what these things are but maybe knowing this will help you.) Thanks!

• pGina with automatic Kerberos ticket and OpenAFS token/ticket

  I am currently updating our educational Windows lab images from XP to 7, In doing so we are also migrating from Comtarsia to pGina. Unfortunately somewhere in the transition our automation that fetched kerberos and OpenAFS tickets/tokens on login has completely stopped functioning. Basically what used to happen was, using kfw-3.2.2 and the old OpenAFS release (loopback adapter days), either comtarsia would share password or something with the NIM (Network Identity Manager) which would authenticate against the kerberos server gaining a ticket and AFS token needed to access the users file, this was aided by the fact that our ldap database that windows authenticates against is also what kerberos uses to authenticate so usernames/passwords are the same across both services. I have set up all of the tools, albeit newer 64bit versions which seem to have given me less trouble than the previous releases of NIM/OpenAFS/Krb5, as well as setting their configurations back to what we used to use. Unfortunately this seems to be fubar'd in some way, instead all we get now is a OpenAFS token, most likely I assume from the AFScreds tool which operates some kind of integrated login process, although this does not help in getting a kerberos ticket or a afs ticket for which a login box is provided be NIM after the user logs in. Does anyone know IF it is possible to do what we are trying, and if so how? I was considering writing a pGina plugin which would interact with the server itself but this seems slightly like overkill considering that all these applications already exist...

• Gmail: security warning icon

  Hello, I just enabled some Gmail Labs programs in my Gmail account, and then I noticed the orange triangle icon with an exclamation mark in it at the end of the address bar of my Google Chrome browser. Clicking on it brought forth a "Security Information' dialog box, with the following messages: "--mail.google.com The identity of website has been verified by Thawlte SGC CA. --Your connection to mail.google.com is encrypted with 128-bit encryption. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look or behavior of the page." I then logged into two of my other Gmail accounts, one of which has no Gmail Labs programs enabled, and the other with 1 program enabled quite some time ago, both with the same result as above (i.e., with the appearance of the orange triangle warning sign in the address bar). I don't remember seeing the orange triangle before, but I'm not sure if it has ever appeared or not. I have "Always use https" enabled for my Gmail accounts. My questions are: Is there a way to identify and remove these un-secure "resources"? (Could enabling Gmail Labs programs have brought these on?) Meanwhile, are my Gmail accounts compromised and unsafe to use? If so, what should I being doing about that now? After this problem is solved, would I need to reset the password to my Gmail accounts, and/or take any other measures to restore their security? Many thanks for answering my questions!

• Can I change the "From" name and address without going into Mail.app's preferences?

  Can I somehow add an editable "From" field to Mail.app, a bit like Virtual Identity for Thunderbird, just like I could change the "Reply To" address on the fly? In Mail.app, one can set up multiple email addresses for a single account by just entering a comma-seperated list like [email protected], [email protected]. Next, when composing a message, Mail offers a dropdown to select a "From" address. And when replying†, it automatically selects the right address if it can find a match: Nice, but I'd like to be able to change the "From" on the fly, without going into the Account Information. Also, in previous versions of Mail one could even specify multiple Full Names for a single account: Email Address: Arjan <[email protected]>, Arjan on SU <[email protected]> But nowadays, Mail only uses the setting of Full Name, and even ignores names in the Email Address field when no value for Full Name is set at all. Hence, it would be great if I could change the Full Name on the fly as well. I had no luck finding a plugin for Mail yet. † When using sub-addressing, anything that is sent to [email protected] is simply delivered to [email protected]. I'd then like to reply with the same full address, rather than just [email protected] if Mail cannot find a match, without going into the Account Information first. I sometimes also want to compose a new message with a new sub-addressing-address.

• Staying anonymous while hosting your site?

  I don't mean anonymous surfing. I mean hosting and having your own domain and such. The reason is that my blog is about religious/political topics which may cause me trouble in the future. This is the domain I am working on: www.james-croft.com I know that using Whois search my name can come up: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/james-croft.com The solution to that, as far as I understood, is to buy a privacy package from the domain registrar. in my case it is lucky register: http://i.stack.imgur.com/uvOdc.png Also hosting is a concern. I use the same hosting service for multiple websites. My question is this: Can my hosting be tracked and be used to identify me? Also: Are there other methods of finding out my identity from either Google Adsense or Amazon affiliate programs? I couldn't find any relevant articles online. If there is anything else that is relevant, please let me know. I appreciate any response.

• Run Explorer in SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7 using Sysinternal’s psexec tool?

  Has anyone been successful at launching an instance of Windows Explorer in the SYSTEM account on Windows Vista or 7? It is possible to do this on XP, but I haven't been able to get it to completely work in Vista or 7. Trying to launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 1 (my user session) results in Explorer exiting immediately and returning an error code of 1. I can launch Explorer as SYSTEM into session 0 with the following command: psexec -i 0 -s explorer That will create an instance of explorer running as SYSTEM with a taskbar and start menu on the hidden session 0 desktop, but won't let you open a file browser window. If you switch to the hidden session 0 desktop and try to open an Explorer window from there to browse files, the following error message appears: "The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password." I have set the following registry key to 1 for my user account and the SYSTEM account: \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\SeparateProcess There has got to be a way to make this work? If it is not possible, can anyone explain why? -Rob

• Deploying a Git server in a AWS linux instance

  I'm making a git server on my linux instance in AWS. I tried doing it using these instructions but in the end I always get stuck with a "Permission denied (publickey)" message. So here is my detailed steps, the client is my windows machine running mysysgit and the server is the AWS ubuntu instance : 1) I created user Git with a simple password. 2) Created the ssh directory in ~/.ssh 3) On the client I created ssh keys using ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 1024, they got dropped in my /Users/[Name]/.ssh directory, id_rsa and id_rsa.pub key pair was created. 4) Using notepad I copy pasted the text into newly created files on the server in the ~/.ssh directory of my Git user. ~/.ssh/id_rsa and **~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub** were copied. 5) On the server I made the authorized_hosts file using "cat id_rsa.pub authorized_hosts" (while inside the .ssh directory) 6) Now to test it, on my client machine I did ssh -v git@[ip.address] 7) Result : debug1: Host 'ip.address' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/known_hosts:1 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Offering public key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. • How to setup Calendar permissions for group to group

  I've been scouring the internet and so far have only been able to find examples of how to grant calendar permissions from one user to another using the Add-MailboxFolderPermission command. This is great and it was okay for when they only had a handful of users. But going forward it's not realistic to have to set individual calendar permissions for all calendars for each new user. Layout of security groups already created. Each group has a few people assigned to it. Techs Managers Admin What I am trying to accomplish is set it up so that anyone that belongs to the Managers group can view the calendars of the Tech group. Admins can view and edit the Tech group. I've found an example of adding just the security group name but I get an error of: [PS] C:\Windows\system32add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity Techs:\Calendar -User "Admin" -AccessRights Owner The user "Admin" is either not valid SMTP address, or there is no matching information. + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Add-MailboxFolderPermission], InvalidExternalUserIdException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 39352699,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.StoreTasks.AddMailboxFolderPermission Am I creating groups wrong? • Troubleshooting certificate issues

  I'm trying to access my (European Parliament) Webmail from a Linux/Firefox machine at the following address and I get security warning messages explaining that the identity of the site cannot be verified (the error message is in french). But this only happens with Linux/Firefox from one machine. Here's the address: https://webmail.europarl.europa.eu/ (and I'm trying to access it from my home, not from the EP). And here's the detailed error message: webmail.europarl.europa.eu utilise un certificat de sécurité invalide. Le certificat n'est pas sûr car l'autorité délivrant le certificat est inconnue. (Code d'erreur : sec_error_unknown_issuer) So basically, if I translate, it is telling that the webmail.europarl.europa.eu certificate is invalid because the authority that delivered the certificate is unknown. I do only get this invalid certificate thing on Linux/Firefox. From a MacBookPro running Safari, I go to what looks like the correct webmail login page. From the same Linux machine, but using another user account and Chrome instead of Firefox, I go to what looks like the correct webmail login page. So there are several possibilities, here are a few ones: Firefox is right and my Linux box has been hacked Firefox is right and detecting something that neither Chrome nor Safari is detecting (like, say, my router that may be hacked) Safari on the MacBook Pro and Chrome on Linux are both correct and it is just Firefox on Linux that is wrongly stressing me when everything is normal. How do I know which one of these possibilities (or any other) is correct? How can I troubleshoot what is going on with either Linux/Firefox or with the parliament's webmail?

• Could this server log mean my server is being used as a proxy?

  I came across the following entry in my access.log: 58.218.199.147 - - [05/Jun/2012:12:56:04 +1000] "GET http://proxyproxys.com/ HTTP/1.1" 200 183 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" Normally when I see a full URL entry in my access.log I assume it is log spam with people trying to get me to access their site. These entries are normally followed with a 404 response. The above entry is followed with a 200 'success' response! Doing some searching it would seem that this can occur when someone is trying to use your server as a proxy. This disturbed me more - especially because the URL in question has the word proxy in it. Going to the site 'proxyproxys.com' (using hidemyass.com to protect my own identity), the site returns what appears to be some sort of 'proxy judge' ---------------------------------------- HTTP_ACCEPT=text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE=en-US,en;q=0.8 HTTP_USER_AGENT=Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_7_4) AppleWebKit/536.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/19.0.1084.53 Safari/536.5 HTTP_CONNECTION=close REMOTE_PORT=56355 REMOTE_HOST=74.63.112.142 REMOTE_ADDR=74.63.112.142 ---------------------------------------- CS_ProxyJudge Result=HIGH_ANONYMITY ---------------------------------------- Question: 1) does the 200 success mean that someone has been able to successfully use my server as a proxy? 2) are there other means of confirming if my server is being used as a proxy 3) can you refer me to documentation to help 'close up' my security gap if there is one. • OpenSSL response 404 issue on centOS 6

  I followed this tutorial (though it's for 5.2, I figured I'd be alright). The changes I had to make that seemed to have worked: Rename ca.csr to ca.cslr (that's the one the command generated) List it in the ssl.conf as ca.cslr instead of ca.csr I have the following in the httpd.conf <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /etc/test ServerName site.com </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:433> SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/pki/tls/private/ca.key <Directory /etc/test> AllowOverride All </Directory> DocumentRoot /etc/test ServerName cryptokings.com </VirtualHost> /test contains a folder inside of it, accessible via http://site.com/test/foo, however attempting to access it via https://site.com/test/foo results in warning that the certificate is untrusted (self-signed, no biggie) a 404 error. Chrome's complains about the certificate are the following: The identity of this website has not been verified. • Server's certificate does not match the URL. • Server's certificate is not trusted. I think those warnings are a side-effect of a self-signed certificate - or is the first one something that needs to be addressed? I seem to be able fetch the root page via https just fine though, it shows a standard CentOS setup page. (That said, I haven't added a VirtualHost entry for it so I suppose that makes sense) I think I've made a mistake somewhere during the setup as I'm not too familiar with the process. During setup, I was prompted for a type of password that would be required when apache restarts but running service httpd restart does not seem to prompt me for one. Any help would be appreciated.

• Configure J2EE Agent with OpenAM behind Reverse Proxy

  I have a reverse proxy with two SSL enabled NamedVirtualHosts on different ports. Both containers on each internal host is GF 2.1.1. Proxy configuration as follows: Proxy URL -> Internal URL https://apps.mydomain.com -> http://apps.internal.com https://secure.otherdomain.com:8080/ -> http://secure.internal.com I initially tried configuring the J2EE agent in OpenAM and the web app container to use the internal URLs (I appended /openam and /agentapp respectively). However, I received the following errors when trying to access a secured application such as https://apps.mydomain.com/webapp. java.lang.RuntimeException: Failed to load configuration: ApplicationSSOTokenProvider.getApplicationSSOToken(): Unable to get Application SSO Token A second attempt gives the following error: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class com.sun.identity.agents.filter.AmFilterManager Along with these in the agent debug.out: ERROR: Failed to obtain auth service url from server: null://null:null ... SiteMonitor: Site URL http://secure.internal.com/openam/namingservice is not available. If I specify the server and agent urls using the proxy urls, then the agent appears to be working and I am redirected to the OpenAM login page. However, the goto in the URL is http://apps.mydomain.com/webapp instead of https://apps.mydomain.com/webapp (missing https). So after authentication, the redirect fails. Now I could possibly get by with mod_rewrite, but it feels hackish and I really want to know what's going on. Any ideas?

• SQL 2000 Backup/Export Process - Can't find SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager, Can't use Mgmt Studio Expre

  I need to make a backup of a client's SQL 2000 database, however there are a few issues preventing me from doing so using the traditional methods. I've tried using SQL Management Studio Express, but the host doesn't give sufficient privileges to create a backup and I'm getting some strange error messages. I've also tried doing the "Generate Scripts" to recreate the schema, then using the DTS Wizard to migrate the data, but the IDs set up with the identity specification property are not consistent with the live database once copied over. This results in some foreign key breakage... If I remember correctly, I was able to use Microsoft SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager to perform the task before, but I can't find this anywhere... it seems Microsoft has pulled most SQL Server 2000 stuff from their site. Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Enterprise Manager (or a trial of SQL Server 2000, which I believe comes with the component)? Or conversely, does anyone know of any other tools (preferably non-commercial) that are capable of mirroring remote SQL Server 2000 DBs? Thanks!

• IIS 6 ASP.NET default handler-mappings and virtual directories

  I'm having a problem with setting a default mapping in IIS 6. I want to secure *.HTML files with ASP.NET forms authentication. The problem seems to have something to do with using virtual directories to hold the html files. Here's how it's setup: sample directory tree c:/inetpub/ (nothing in here) d:/web_files/my_web_apps d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app1/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app2/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/ app1 and app2 both access the same html_files directory, so html_files is set as a virtual directory in the web apps in IIS... sample web directory tree //app1/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) //app2/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) If I put a file called test.html in the root of //app1/ and then add the default mapping to the asp.net dll and setup my security on the root folder with deny="?", then accessing test.html works exactly as expected. If I'm not authenticated, it takes me to the login.aspx page, and if I am authenticated then it displays test.html. If I put the test.html file in the html_files directory I get a totally different behavior. Now the login.aspx page loads and I stuck some code in to check if I was still authenticated: <p>autheticated: <%=User.Identity.IsAuthenticated%></p> I figured it would say false because why else would it bother to load the login page? Nope, it says true - so it knows i'm authenticated, but it won't give me access to the test.html file. I've spent several hours on this and haven't been able to solve it. I'm going to spend some more time on google to see if I've missed something. Fingers crossed.

• Service Unavailable - App Pool disabled error...anyone know why?

  Hi guys A small number of our sites intermediately experience an error that is a mystery to us. Our set up is: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 .NET 3.5 We have about 35 Websites running on IIS Each site has it's own App Pool Each App Pool has the identity: Network Service The symptom is: The Application Pool for a site stops, and when you browse to the site, you only see: SERVICE UNAVAILABLE In the Event Logs, we have one Error, that looks like this: Application pool 'AppPool1' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. And we have several Warnings leading up to the error, that look like this (note: the warnings look the same, except for the process id): A process serving application pool 'AppPool1' suffered a fatal communication error with the World Wide Web Publishing Service. The process id was '292'. The data field contains the error number. What's causing this? As I said, it doeasn't happen very often....the last time was about 6 months ago...and it usually happens with the same site/App pool. Any ideas? cheers!
