• How to implement early exit / return in Haskell?

  I am porting a Java application to Haskell. The main method of the Java application follows the pattern: public static void main(String [] args) { if (args.length == 0) { System.out.println("Invalid number of arguments."); System.exit(1); } SomeDataType d = getData(arg[0]); if (!dataOk(d)) { System.out.println("Could not read input data."); System.exit(1); } SomeDataType r = processData(d); if (!resultOk(r)) { System.out.println("Processing failed."); System.exit(1); } ... } So I have different steps and after each step I can either exit with an error code, or continue to the following step. My attempt at porting this to Haskell goes as follows: main :: IO () main = do a <- getArgs if ((length args) == 0) then do putStrLn "Invalid number of arguments." exitWith (ExitFailure 1) else do -- The rest of the main function goes here. With this solution, I will have lots of nested if-then-else (one for each exit point of the original Java code). Is there a more elegant / idiomatic way of implementing this pattern in Haskell? In general, what is a Haskell idiomatic way to implement an early exit / return as used in an imperative language like Java?

• Checkers AI Algorithm

  I am making an AI for my checkers game and I'm trying to make it as hard as possible. Here is the current criteria for a move on the hardest difficulty: 1: Look For A Block: This is when a piece is being threatened and another piece can be moved in behind it to protect it. If the piece cannot move out of the way without still being in danger, the computer ignores the piece. 3: If the computer player owns any kings, it will attempt to 'hunt down' enemy pieces on the board, if no moves can be made that won't in danger the king or any other pieces, the computer ignores this rule. 4: Any piece that is owned by the computer that is in column 1 or 6 will attempt to go to a side. When a piece is in column 0 or 7, it is in a very strategic position because it cannot get captured while it is in either of these columns 5: It makes an educated random move, the move will not indanger the piece that is moving or any piece that is on the board. 6: If none of the above are possible it makes a random move. This question is not really specific to any language but if all examples could be in Java that would be great, considering this app is written in android. Does anyone see any room for improvement in this algorithm? Anything that would make it better at playing checkers?

• Making an AI walk on a NavigationMesh (2D/Top-Down game)

  For some time I have been working on a framework which should make it possible to generate 2D levels based on a set of rules specified by level designers. You can read more about it here as I won't go into details: http://www.jorisdormans.nl/article.php?ref=engineering_emergence Anyway, I'm now at the point of putting the framework to use and have trouble coming up with a solution for AI. I decided to implement a NavigationMesh in the generated levels as I already have that information to start with. Consider the following image (borrowed from http://www.david-gouveia.com/pathfinding-on-a-2d-polygonal-map/): When I run A* on the NavigationMesh, the red path would be suggested when I want to go from point A to B (either direction). However, I don't want my AI to walk that path directly and clipping corners, I'd rather want them to follow the more logical black path. How would I go about going from the Red path to the Black path, are there any algorithms for this. Which steps do I take? Is A* the proper solution for this at all? For some additional information: The proof-of-concept game is a 2D top-down game written in C#, but examples/references in any language are welcome!

• Ubuntu installation on Windows , I can't find my way back.

  So recently I have installed Ubuntu as an OS in addition to my Windows because it looked good and I have used it in the past and I liked it. Before I installed Ubuntu, they (the website) have given me a help list that shows that I will have the option of having Windows aside to Ubuntu (dual install), while I work with the Ubuntu OS. They told me that if I either put it in a CD or USB drive, I'll be okay. So there I was, installing Ubuntu, saving the Ubuntu file on my USB drive first, then afterwards clicking it and therefore proceeded to install. The problem is once I installed Ubuntu, it directed me to the 'login' page without giving me an option for dual-installing (you know, the language portion and so on). Now I tried both to suspend and shut off, and it seems like I cannot access my Windows files/account anymore and it really is unfortunate. Now I am FREAKING out, because this is a shared computer that my family uses (it's like a main computer in the house) and everyone's files are on this. It is extremely crucial for me to get these Windows files back because if I don't, my life will end tonight. Please, if someone can help me, I will love you forever. Please just help me, this is urgent. I'm sure a lot of people have experienced this too, but I have found nothing on the website helpful for me as Ubuntu is a very new thing for me. • UTF-8 encoding problem with flash mysql and php

  Hi, As you may know, I am programming an on-line game using FLASH. I am connecting my FLASH 8 movie with MySQL database through PHP. I am doing very good in that, and I have everything working fine. The problems come when I am trying to insert (Using the INSERT SQL func) data to the database that are non-english. In other words, UTF-8 data. I red a lot of articls about that stuff and found and apply the fallowing: 1. In PHP4, you need to tell the PHP to use UTF-8 when using the xml_parser_crater() func, however, in PHP5 that is done automatically. Even though I told PHP5 to use the UTF-8 when calling the func. Adding the header to the XML sent to PHP from flash. Force the FLASH to use UTF-8 encoding in the preference options. Set the encoding in MySQL to UTF-8 (utf8_unicode_ci with InnoDB engine). I can read and insert the other language data correctly in the phpadmin as well. I did all that in my coding, and still I can't insert such data. one more strange thing is that, when I use the same link, that the FLASH using, with the XML, that the FLASH creating, on the browser (google chrome), I got the data inserted right in the database!!!!! I am about to get crazy about that stuff, What am I missing? what cause the problem? Thank you in advance.

  I'm trying to access WSDL(Web Service Definition Language) file using SoapClient() of PHP. I found that WSDL file is authenticated. I tried with passing credentials on an array by another parameter and active SSL on my server, still I'm getting an error. • Numbered list with subclauses

  I'm trying to create a legal document with decimal numbered subclauses, then alpha and roman subsub and subsubsub clauses. (whew!) `1. MAIN HEADING 1.1 This is an example of a sub-clause and you can see that even though the words continue on to the right, it would be best if it wrapped around and formed a block to the right of the decimal number 1.2 In doing so the normal second clause should also wrap around but the second subsequent clause should hang in from the left and be in a block. See below for the remaining clauses (a) this list is completely for demonstration and should not be construed as legal language in any way, nor should make sense in that (b) should the indentation take more than: i) this many lines it would be overly big 11) legal numbering continues in the sub-sub clauses with the use of lower roman lettering and should flow below in a block iii) and continue the formatting on to the next line but be underneath the body of the the text and not begin directly below the number itself. In this example the text carries out to the right but I need it to wrap around underneath. Sorry its so wordy, need this to show the example. 2. Second Clause Heading 2.1 and so it continues thus I've found the examples for decimal numbering but they do not create a block out to the right of the number, and they carry on with multiple decimals rather than alpha and roman sub clauses.

• Moving from windows to linux

  I need to reconcile these 2 facts: I don't feel comfortable working on Linux; I need to develop software for Linux. Some background: I have a 10+ years of programming experience on Windows (almost exclusively C/C++, but some .NET as well), I was a user of FreeBSD at home for about 3 years or so (then had to go back to Windows), and I've never had much luck with Linux. And now I have to develop software for Linux. I need a plan. On Windows, you can get away with just knowing a programming language, an API you're coding against, your IDE (VisualStudio) and some very basic tools for troubleshooting (Depends, ProcessExplorer, DebugView, WinDbg). Everything else comes naturally. On Linux, it's a very different story. How the hell would I know what DLL (sorry, Shared Object) would load, if I link to it from Firefox plugin? What's the Linux equivalent of inserting __asm int 3/DebugBreak() in the source and running the program, and then letting the OS call a debugger? Why the hell release builds use something, called appLoader, while debug builds work somehow different? Worst of all: how to provision Linux development environment? So, taking into account that hatred is usually associated with not knowing enough, what would you recommend? I'm ok with Emacs and GCC. I need to educate myself as a Linux admin/user, and I need to learn proper troubleshooting tools (strace is cool, btw), equivalents to the ones I mentioned above. Do I need to do Linux From Scratch? Or do I need to just read some books (I've read "UNIX programming enviornment" by Kernighan and "Advanced Programming..." by Stevens, but I need to learn something more practical)? Or do I need to have some Linux distro on my home computer?

• Upgrading Visual Studio 2010

  I have been running Visual Studio 2010 as my main development studio on my development computer since the RC was released. I need to upgrade that to the RTM, but first I need to remove it. Microsoft have done a lot of work to make this easy, and it works. Its as easy as uninstalling from the control panel. I have had may previous versions of Visual Studio 2010 on this same computer with no need to rebuild to remove all the bits. Figure: Run the uninstall from the control panel to remove Visual Studio 2010 RC Figure: The uninstall removes everything for you.  Figure: A green tick means the everything went OK. If you get a red cross, try installing the RTM anyway and it should warn you with what was not uninstalled properly and you can remove it manually.   Once you have VS2010 RC uninstalled installing should be a breeze. The install for 2010 is much faster than 2008. Which could take all day, and then some on slower computers. This takes around 20 minutes even on my small laptop. I always do a full install as although I have to do c# I sometimes get to use a proper programming language VB.NET. Seriously, there is nothing worse than trying to open a project and the other developer has used something you don't have. Its not their fault. Its yours! Save yourself the angst and install Fully, its only 5.9GB. Figure: I always select all of the options.   Now go forth and develop! • Unit testing statically typed functional code

  I wanted to ask you people, in which cases it makes sense to unit test statically typed functional code, as written in haskell, scala, ocaml, nemerle, f# or haXe (the last is what I am really interested in, but I wanted to tap into the knowledge of the bigger communities). I ask this because from my understanding: One aspect of unit tests is to have the specs in runnable form. However when employing a declarative style, that directly maps the formalized specs to language semantics, is it even actually possible to express the specs in runnable form in a separate way, that adds value? The more obvious aspect of unit tests is to track down errors that cannot be revealed through static analysis. Given that type safe functional code is a good tool to code extremely close to what your static analyzer understands. However a simple mistake like using x instead of y (both being coordinates) in your code cannot be covered. However such a mistake could also arise while writing the test code, so I am not sure whether its worth the effort. Unit tests do introduce redundancy, which means that when requirements change, the code implementing them and the tests covering this code must both be changed. This overhead of course is about constant, so one could argue, that it doesn't really matter. In fact, in languages like Ruby it really doesn't compared to the benefits, but given how statically typed functional programming covers a lot of the ground unit tests are intended for, it feels like it's a constant overhead one can simply reduce without penalty. From this I'd deduce that unit tests are somewhat obsolete in this programming style. Of course such a claim can only lead to religious wars, so let me boil this down to a simple question: When you use such a programming style, to which extents do you use unit tests and why (what quality is it you hope to gain for your code)? Or the other way round: do you have criteria by which you can qualify a unit of statically typed functional code as covered by the static analyzer and hence needs no unit test coverage?

  I'm going to develop an urban game using a telco API for phone geolocation and sending/receiving messages. A player would pick up one of the scenarios, move around the city and when he hits a given location, he gets a message and possibly has to answer it. I'm wondering, what approach would be the best in my case. I came up with this general idea: Web application as a user interface (user registration, players ranking, scenarios editing) written in Ruby on Rails. Game server (hosting games, game logic like checking players location, sending and receiving messages) written in Ruby. Database (users, scores, scenarios etc.), probably MySQL or someother open source DB. I want to learn Ruby and RoR, that's why I chose these language and framework. Do you think it's a good choice for a game server? Another question: is this project division good? I mean, I have little experience with Ruby and Rails - that's why I'm asking. Maybe it's better to have web application merged with game server and somehow have the server hosting RoR application do the tasks like mobile phone pinging and message sending? • Pythonic Java. Yes, or no?

  Python use of indentation for code scope was initially very polemic and now is considered one of the best language features, because it helps ( almost by forcing us ) to have a consistent style. Well, I saw this post http://bit.ly/hmvTe9 where someone posted Java code with ; y {} aligned to the right margin to look more pythonic. It was very shocking at first ( as a matter of fact, if I ever see Java code like that in one of my projects I would be scared! ) However, there is something interesting here. Do we need all those braces and semicolons? How would the code would look like without them? class Person int age void greet( String a ) if( a == "" ) out.println("Hello stranger") else out.printf("Hello %s%n", a ) int age() return this.age class Main void main() new Person().greet("") Looks good to me, but in such small piece of code is hard to appreciate it, and since I don't Python too much, I can't tell by looking at existing libraries if it would be cleaner or not. This would be a compiling version using right aligned {} and ; http://pxe.pastebin.com/2uijtbYM Question What would happen if we could code like this? Would it make things clearer? Would it make it harder? I see braces, and semicolons as help to the parser and we, as humans have get used to them, but do we really need them? I guess is hard to tell specially since many mainstream languages do use braces, C, C++, Java, C# JavaScript Assuming the compiler wouldn't have problems without them, would you use them? • XNA and C# vs the 360's in order processor

  Having read this rant, I feel that they're probably right (seeing as the Xenon and the CELL BE are both highly sensitive to branchy and cache ignorant code), but I've heard that people are making games fine with C# too. So, is it true that it's impossible to do anything professional with XNA, or was the poster just missing what makes XNA the killer API for game development? By professional, I don't mean in the sense that you can make money from it, but more in the sense that the more professional games have phsyics models and animation systems that seem outside the reach of a language with such definite barriers to the intrinsics. If I wanted to write a collision system or fluid dynamics engine for my game, I don't feel like C# offers me the chance to do that as the runtime code generator and the lack of intrinsics gets in the way of performance. However, many people seem to be fine working within these constraints, making their successful games but seemingly avoiding any of the problems by omission. I've not noticed any XNA games do anything complex other than what's already provided by the libraries, or handled by shaders. Is this avoidance of the more complex game dynamics because of teh limitations of C#, or just people concentrating on getting it done? In all honesty, I can't believe that AI war can maintain that many units of AI without some data oriented approach, or some dirty C# hacks to make it run better than the standard approach, and I guess that's partly my question too, how have people hacked C# so it's able to do what games coders do naturally with C++?

• Prevent Eclipse Java Builder from Compiling Java-Like Source

  I'm in the process of writing an eclipse plugin for my programming language Whiley (see http://whiley.org). The plugin is working reasonably well, although there's lots to do. Two pieces of the jigsaw are: I've created a "Whiley Builder" by subclassing incremental project builder. This handles building and cleaning of "*.whiley" files. I've created a content-type called "Whiley Source Files" for "*.whiley" files, which extends "org.eclipse.jdt.core.javaSource" (this follows Andrew Eisenberg suggestion). The advantage of having the content-type extend javaSource is that it immediately fits into the package explorer, etc. In principle, I could fleshout ICompilationUnit to provide more useful info, although I haven't done that yet. The disadvantage is that the Java builder is trying to compile my whiley files ... and it obviously can't. Originally, I had the Java Builder run first, then the Whiley builder. Superficially, this actually worked out quite well since all of the errors from the Java Builder were discarded by the Whiley Builder (for whiley files). However, I actually want the Whiley Builder to run first, as this is the best way for me to resolve dependencies between Java and Whiley files. Which leads me to my question: can I stop the Java builder from trying to compile certain java-like resources? Specifically, in my case, those with the "*.whiley" extension. As an alternative, I was wondering whether my Whiley Builder could somehow update the resource delta to remove those files which it has dealt with. Thoughts?

• Microsoft Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how, today, I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and "ProjectB is an unmanaged native C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

  I have set myself the goal of becoming a decent developer by this time next year. By this I mean full experience of the development 'lifecycle,' a few good apps/sites/webapps under my belt, and most importantly being able to work at a steady pace without getting sidelined for hours by some should-know-this-already technique. I'm not starting from scratch. I've written a lot of html/css, SQL, javascript, python and VB.net, and studied other languages like C and Java. I know about things like OOP, design patterns, TDD, complexity, computational linguistics, pointers/references, functional programming, and other academic/theoretical matters. It's just I can't say I've really done these things yet. So I want to get up to speed, and I want to know what things I can leave till a later date. For instance, studying algorithms and the maths behind them is interesting and all, but so far I've hardly needed to write anything but the most basic nested loops. Investigating Assembly to have a clearer picture of low-level operations would be cool... but I imagine rarely infringes on daily work. On the other hand, looking at a functional programming language might help me write programs that are more comprehensible and less prone to hidden failures (at the moment I'm finding the biggest difficulty is when the complexity of the app exceeds my capacity to understand it - for instance passing data around was fine... until I had to start doing it with AJAX, which was a painful step up). I could spend time working through case studies of design patterns, but I'm not sure how many of them get used in 'real life.' I'm a programmer with basic abilities - what skills should I focus on developing? (also my Unix skills are very weak, and also knowledge of Windows configuration... not sure how much time I should spend on that)
