  • Separate update and render

    I'm programming a simple Snake in Java. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Java and Game Developing, so please bear with me ;) Until now, I have been using a UI thread, as well as a update-thread. The update thread just set the position, set the GameObjects, and so on. I didn't think much of concurrency, but now I've come to a problem. I wanted to modify the ArrayList<GameObject>, but it throws a java.util.ConcurrentModificationException. With a little research I found out that this happens because the two threads are trying to access the variables at the same time. But I didn't really find a way to prevent this. I thought about copying the array and swapping them out when the rendering is finished, but I would have to deep-copy them, which isn't really the best solution in my opinion. It probably eats up more CPU resources than a single-threaded game. Are there any other ways to prevent this? Thanks a lot for your help!

One thread for 'logic', one for rendering, or more? 6 answers So I recently started learning Java, and having a interest in playing games as well as developing them, naturally I want to create game in Java. I have experience with games in C# and C++ but all of them were single-threaded simple games. But now, I learned how easy it is to make threads in Java, I want to take things to the next level. I started thinking about how would I actually implement threading in a game. I read couple of articles that say the same thing "Usually you have thread for rendering, for updating game logic, for AI, ..." but I haven't (or didn't look hard enough) found example of implementation. My idea how to make implementation is something like this (example for AI) public class AIThread implements Runnable{ private List<AI> ai; private Player player; /*...*/ public void run() { for (int i = 0; i < ai.size(); i++){ ai.get(i).update(player); } Thread.sleep(/* sleep until the next game "tick" */); } } I think this could work. If I also had a rendering and updating thread list of AI in both those threads, since I need to draw the AI and I need to calculate the logic between player and AI(But that could be moved to AIThread, but as an example) . Coming from C++ I'm used to do thing elegantly and efficiently, and this seems like neither of those. So what would be the correct way to handle this? Should I just keep multiple copies of resources in each thread or should I have the resources on one spot, declared with synchronized keyword? I'm afraid that could cause deadlocks, but I'm not yet qualified enough to know when a code will produce deadlock.

    we have an application that is built with .Net MVC. We are now tasked with exposing API's to third parties. Members on our team want to just continue down our current path and just use more controllers so we can reuse the backend of our current application. Logic tells me we need to create a seperate service layer when more clients are going to be accessing it, but .Net MVC seems to take care of all of this. Is it really acceptable architecture to use controllers in a stand alone application to expose API's and what would be the potential gains of extracting the service layer out?

I finished that pending windows update. but no help. I googed to find that should re-install .net framework 1.1/2.1, i tried but nothing good happend, this error always here. I even spent 4 hrs to re-install vs2010, but still cannot solve this. If i need to re-install WIN7 for this , i will be crazy at all... How this happened? and how to overcome it? The trouble is, to call it is quite convuluted: var cache = new Cache<MyObject>(Page.Cache, CachedKeys.MyKey); MyObject myObject = null; if(!cache.TryGetFromCache(out myObject)){ //get data... cache.AddToCache(data); //add to cache return data; } return myObject; I only store one instance of each of my objects in the cache.     Hello, I need a good Unicode library for C++. I need Transformations in Unicode sensitive way. For example sort all strings in case insensitive way and get their first characters for index. Convert to upper and to lower various Unicode strings. Split text in reasonable position -- words that would work for Chinese and Japanese as well. Formatting numbers, dates in locale sensitive way (should be thread safe). Transparent support of utf8 (primary internal representation). As far as I know the best library is ICU. However, I can't find normal developer friendly API documentation with examples. Also as far as I see, it is not too friendly with modern C++ design, work with STL and so on.   • cast operator to base class within a thin wrapper derived class

    I have a derived class that's a very thin wrapper around a base class. Basically, I have a class that has two ways that it can be compared depending on how you interpret it so I created a new class that derives from the base class and only has new constructors (that just delegate to the base class) and a new operator==. What I'd like to do is overload the operator Base&() in the Derived class so in cases where I need to interpret it as the Base. For example: class Base { Base(stuff); Base(const Base& that); bool operator==(Base& rhs); //typical equality test }; class Derived : public Base { Derived(stuff) : Base(stuff) {}; Derived(const Base& that) : Base(that) {}; Derived(const Derived& that) : Base(that) {}; bool operator==(Derived& rhs); //special case equality test operator Base&() { return (Base&)*this; //Is this OK? It seems wrong to me. } }; If you want a simple example of what I'm trying to do, pretend I had a String class and String==String is the typical character by character comparison. But I created a new class CaseInsensitiveString that did a case insensitive compare on CaseInsensitiveString==CaseInsensitiveString but in all other cases just behaved like a String. it doesn't even have any new data members, just an overloaded operator==. (Please, don't tell me to use std::string, this is just an example!) Am I going about this right? Something seems fishy, but I can't put my finger on it.

  • Wrapper background image gets cut off at the top

    My site has a wrapper with three background images. A static top and bottom image and a third image that repeats along the y axis. For some reason the top background image is getting cut off and I can't figure out way. Here is a link to the live site: http://storrepictures.weebly.com/projects.html I have offset the top and bottom images so you can see what they look like. You can see that the top one is cut off. I've tried messing around with some of the div padding settings but can't seem to get it to work. One interesting note: The background images used to be JPEGs (I switched to PNG files because I needed transparency). When I was using JPEGs this was not a problem - the three images lined up perfectly. Let me know if it would help to have the actual code posted. From what I've been reading on this forum, people seem to like looking at the live site and I didn't want to make the post too long. Thanks a lot for all your help.

  • MySQLi Wrapper -- will this slow down performance?

    I found the following code on php.net. I'm trying to write a wrapper for the MySQLi library to make things incredibly simple. If this is going to slow down performance, I'll skip it and find another way, if this works, then I'll do that. I have a single query function, if someone passes in more than one variable, I assume the function has to be prepared. The function that I would use to pass in an array to mysqli_stmt_bind_param is call_user_func_array, I have a feeling that is going to slow things down.   • Running Jetty 7 server in eclipse?

    I'm trying to set up Eclipse to run and deploy my projects to a Jetty 7 server (the oldest version available from http://download.eclipse.org/jetty/). I've downloaded Jetty 7 and unpacked it, and I've installed the Jetty plugin from the available server adapters list, but when I try to configure a new Jetty server, the server type list only contains "Jetty 6". But when i try to encrypt some data with one key in Java and c# - there is different results.   • ServiceRoute + WebServiceHostFactory kills WSDL generation? How to create extensionless WCF service

    I'm trying to use extenionless / .svc-less WCF services. Can anyone else confirm or deny the issue I'm experiencing? I use routing in code, and do this in Application_Start of global.asax.cs: RouteTable.Routes.Add(new ServiceRoute("Data", new WebServiceHostFactory(), typeof(DataDips))); I have tested in both IIS 6 and IIS 7.5 and I can use the service just fine (ie my extensionless handler is correctly configured for ASP.NET). However, metadata generation is totally screwed up. I can hit my /mex endpoint with the WCF Test Client (and I presume svcutil.exe) -- but the ?wsdl generation you typically get with .svc is toast. I can't hit it with a browser (get 400 bad request), I can't hit it with wsdl.exe, etc. Metadata generation is configured correctly in web.config. This is a problem of course, because the service is exposed as basicHttpBinding so that an old style ASMX client can get to it. But of course, the client can't generate the proxy without a WSDL description. If I instead use serviceActivation routing in config like this, rather than registering a route in code: <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true"> <serviceActivations> <add relativeAddress="Data.svc" service="DataDips" /> </serviceActivations> </serviceHostingEnvironment> Then voila... it works. But then I don't have a clean extensionless url. If I change relativeAddress from Data.svc to Data, then I get a configuration exception as this is not supported by config. (Must use an extension registered to WCF). I've also attempted to use this code in conjunction with the above config: RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute("","Data/{*data}","~/Data.svc/{*data}",false); My thinking is that I can just point the extensionless url at the configured .svc url. This doesn't work -- the /Data.svc continues to work, but /Data returns a 404. Anyone with any bright ideas?

I can't figure out if this is: me missing something during code-generation or packaging a runtime dependency missing a misleading error message, and I should be looking elsewhere.   • Are there any decent free JAVA data plotting libraries out there?

    On a recent JAVA project, we needed a free JAVA based real-time data plotting utility. After much searching, we found this tool called the Scientific Graphics Toolkit or SGT from NOAA. It seemed pretty robust, but we found out that it wasn't terribly configurable. Or at least not configurable enough to meet our needs. We ended up digging very deeply into the JAVA code and reverse engineering the code and changing it all around to make the plot tool look and act the way we wanted it to look and act. Of course, this killed any chance for future upgrades from NOAA. So what free or cheap JAVA based data plotting tools or libraries do you use? Followup: Thanks for the JFreeChart suggestions. I checked out their website and it looks like a very nice data charting and plotting utility. I should have made it clear in my original question that I was looking specifically to plot real-time data. I corrected my question above to make that point clear. It appears that JFreeChart support for live data is marginal at best, though. Any other suggestions out there?

    I've spent the day debugging an issue with JAXB getting namespaces wrong or missing (possibly related to Marshaller.JAXB_FRAGMENT, but that's not the point here). I found the problem occurs with JAXB RI 2.1.10 in my endorsed dir. It is fixed if I use JAXB RI 2.2.4 or 2.2.6 Here is what is really confusing (and what made it take so long). It should occur with 1.6.0_27, if that really uses JAXB RI 2.1.10. It seems to me that the problem I'm experiencing has been fixed in the reference implementation somewhere after 2.1.10 and before 2.2.4, but that neither of the 2 VM's above actually use the JAXB version they claim to. Or possibly they use the xjc they claim, but not what is in jaxb-api.jar and jaxb-impl.jar (I know there is a difference in the namespace prefix mapper property, but that won't be causing this problem). I've done these experiments on Win 7 and Ubuntu, in tomcat (no eclipse), and in eclipse (no tomcat), so I'm pretty confident I'm explaining my findings correctly. Can anyone provide any insight into what is happening? If I'm right, does anyone know what versions of JAXB the various Sun/Oracle JDKs really use?

  • Any way to view dynamic java content ex-post? Browser session still open

    I feel like a grandpa from 1996 asking this, but is it at all possible to view a representation of a particular screen that was rendered as part of a java-based online checkout process I executed a couple days ago? I haven't cleared my browser cache or temp files or anything, and I don't think I've restarted the comp or even the browser since. I'm using mac OS X 10.6.8, and the page(s) were viewed with Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 in standard mode (not incognito). Specifically the page in question was part of Verizon Wireless's 'iconic' contract/checkout process, which leads the user through several pages to make selections on various criteria and seems to be based on java. (Obviously I'm a dummy regarding web stuff so the question is probably not very well defined, I'm happy to elaborate). ^This is the tl;dr question. If it belongs on another site please just let me know. Of course, clicking the link to the page in History right now requires a new sign-in and just returns the user to the initial step for doing the process again; it does not pull up a representation of the page as it was seen several days ago. This I understand. Instead using Chrome's integrated cache viewer by typing about:cache in the address bar, I can search and find links that appear to be relevant, when I click on the link I just get a http header and a bunch of hexadecimal gobbledygook. I've tried to use the URL at the top of the cache and URLs in the http headers, but they take me to current versions of those pages and not the versions I saw during the checkout process. I tried this with a few of them but stopped because I noticed that it updated the date in the http header to the present moment and I don't want to take chances overwriting the cache files since I don't know what I'm doing. (It's clear I can't achieve what I'm looking for by visiting current versions of these pages on the web…I should actually probably disable my network adapter while testing this out). The cache folder seems promising, but I don't know what to make of all that hexadecimal mess - if it contains what I'm looking for and if so, how to view it. Finally, the third thing I've come across is the Google Chrome cache folder on my local machine, at ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/ then there are 'Default' and 'Media Cache' folders within. There are ~4,000 files in the former averaging ~100kb each, and 100 files in the latter averaging ~900kb each. The filenames all start "f_00xxxx" except for files titled data_0 through data_4 in each folder. I'm not sure how to observe the contents of these files and don't really want to start opening them up and potentially overwriting existing cached pages, as I notice there are already some holes in the arrangement of the files which I have never deleted manually. Hopefully this is an easy question to answer for someone who knows this stuff, admittedly web stuff is my weak point. As such, I've spent the past five hours searching around and trying to provide all the information I can. I'm probably asking for a miracle - like can those cached pages full of hexadecimal data be used to recreate the representation of the information that was on screen during the process? Or could screenshots of the previously viewed webpages be lurking in the /Caches folder? I have doubt because the content wasn't viewed at a permanent link, rather it seems like the on-screen information was served by Verizon's db, and probably securely so. I'm just not sure if Chrome saves the visual rendering of the page contents somewhere, even just temporarily. Alternatively I would be happy just to get the raw data that was on the page, even if not a visual representation…I just need to be able to demonstrate the phone line that was referenced on this page: https://preorder.verizonwireless.com/iconic/iconic/secured/screens/IconicFeatures.do .
