• First Letter Section Headers with Core Data

  I'm trying to create a list of people sorted in a tableView of sections with the first letter as the title for each section - a la Address Book. I've got it all working, though there is a bit of an issue with the sort order. Here is the way I'm doing it now: NSFetchRequest *request = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; [request setEntity:[NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Contact" inManagedObjectContext:context]]; NSSortDescriptor *fullName = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"fullName" ascending:YES]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:fullName, nil]; [request setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; [fullName release]; [sortDescriptors release]; NSError *error = nil; [resultController release]; resultController = [[NSFetchedResultsController alloc] initWithFetchRequest:request managedObjectContext:context sectionNameKeyPath:@"firstLetter" cacheName:nil]; [resultController performFetch:&error]; [request release]; fullName is a standard property, and firstLetter is a transient property which returns - as you'd expect - the first letter of the fullName. 95% of the time, this works perfectly. The problem is the result controller expects these two "lists" (the sorted fullName list and the sorted firstLetter list) to match exactly. If I have 2 contacts like John and Jack, my fullName list would sort these as Jack, John every time but my firstLetter list might sort them as John, Jack sometimes as it's only sorting by the first letter and leaving the rest to chance. When these lists don't match up, I get a blank tableView with 0 items in it. I'm not really sure how I should go about fixing this issue, but it's very frustrating. Has anyone else run into this? What did you guys find out?

• Change userSettings during MSI installation

  Hi, I am trying to modify the userSettings section (Properties.MyApp.Default) in the MyApp.exe.config file during the installation using an MSI installer. I basically implemented it like in this excellent article: http://raquila.com/software/configure-app-config-application-settings-during-msi-install/ The difference is that I am not editing the appSettings but the userSettings section. The problem is that although the code runs fine, the settings are not saved. After the installation the config file contains the old settings I use in my development environment. I also tried to override OnAfterInstall(System.Collections.IDictionary stateSaver) instead of Install(System.Collections.IDictionary stateSaver) but it doesn't make a difference. Here is the code that should change the config values: protected override void OnAfterInstall(IDictionary savedState) { base.OnAfterInstall(savedState); string targetDirectory = Context.Parameters["targetdir"]; string tvdbAccountID = Context.Parameters["TVDBACCID"]; // read other config elements... • My Core Animation block isn't working as I'd expect

  I have a UIView called activityView, which contains two subviews activityIndicator and cancelOperationsButton. These views are embedded in a XIB and wired up to my view controller. I have two methods that deal with activating (showing) and deactivating (hiding) these two subviews: - (void) enableActivityIndicator { [activityIndicator startAnimating]; [cancelOperationsButton setHidden:NO]; } - (void) disableActivityIndicator { [activityIndicator stopAnimating]; [cancelOperationsButton setHidden:YES]; } By themselves, these two methods work fine. To give this a bit of polish, I'd like to add an animation that fades these subviews in and out: - (void) enableActivityIndicator { [activityIndicator startAnimating]; [cancelOperationsButton setHidden:NO]; [UIView beginAnimations:@"fadeIn" context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDelay:0.0f]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0f]; [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseIn]; activityView.alpha = 1.0f; [UIView commitAnimations]; } - (void) disableActivityIndicator { [UIView beginAnimations:@"fadeOut" context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDelay:0.0f]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0f]; [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseOut]; activityView.alpha = 0.0f; [UIView commitAnimations]; [activityIndicator stopAnimating]; [cancelOperationsButton setHidden:YES]; } But the animations are not working — the subviews just show up or disappear without the parent view's alpha property having an effect on transparency. • Trouble creating a Java policy server for a simple Flash app

  I'm trying to create a simple Flash chat application for educational purposes, but I'm stuck trying to send a policy file from my Java server to the Flash app (after several hours of googling with little luck). The policy file request reaches the server that sends a harcoded policy xml back to the app, but the Flash app doesn't seem to react to it at all until it gives me a security sandbox error. I'm loading the policy file using the following code in the client: Security.loadPolicyFile("xmlsocket://myhostname:" + PORT); The server recognizes the request as "<policy-file-request/" and responds by sending the following xml string to the client: public static final String POLICY_XML = "<?xml version=\"1.0\"?>" + "<cross-domain-policy>" + "<allow-access-from domain=\"*\" to-ports=\"*\" />" + "</cross-domain-policy>"; The code used to send it looks like this: try { _dataOut.write(PolicyServer.POLICY_XML + (char)0x00); _dataOut.flush(); System.out.println("Policy sent to client: " + PolicyServer.POLICY_XML); } catch (Exception e) { trace(e); } Did I mess something up with the xml or is there something else I might have overlooked?

• Problem with Unit testing of ASP.NET project (NullReferenceException when running the test)

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bunch of MS visual studio unit tests for my n-tiered web app but for some reason I can't run those tests and I get the following error - "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" What I'm trying to do is testing of my data access layer where I use LINQ data context class to execute a certain function and return a result,however during the debugging process I found out that all the tests fail as soon as they get to the LINQ data context class and it has something to do with the connection string but I cant figure out what is the problem. UPDATE: Finally I've fixed this!!!!:) I dont know why but for some reasons in the app.config file the connection to my database was as follows: AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\EICDatabase.MDF So what I did is I just changed the path and instead of |DataDirectory| I put the actual path where my MDF file sits,i.e C:\Users\1\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\EICWebSystem\EICWebSystem\App_Data\EICDatabase.mdf After I had done that it worked out!But still it's a bit not clear what was the problem...probably incorrect path to the database?My web.config of ASP.NET project contains the |DataDirectory|\EICDatabase.MDF path though..

• How to Debug an exception: Type is not marked as serializable... when the type is marked as serializ

  I'm trying to: ((Request.Params["crmid"] != null)) in a web page. But it keeps throwing a serialzation exception: Type 'QC.Security.SL.SiteUser' in assembly 'QC.Security, Version=1.0.0.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' is not marked as serializable. The type is however marked as serializable as follows: [Serializable()] public class SiteUser : IIdentity { private long _userId; public long UserId { get { return _userId; } set { _userId = value; } } private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } } private bool _isAuthenticated; public bool IsAuthenticated { get { return _isAuthenticated; } } private string _authenticationType; public string AuthenticationType { get { return _authenticationType; } } I've no idea how to debug this as I cant step into the serializer code to find out why its falling over. The call stack is only one frame deep before it hits [External Code]. And the error message is next to useless given that type is clearly marked as serializable. It was working fine. But now "all of a sudden" it doesn't which typically means some dumb bug in Visual Studio but rebooting doesn't help "this" time. So now I dont know if it's a stupid VS bug or a completely unrelated error for which Im getting a serialization exception or something I'm doing wrong. The truth is I just dont trust VS anymore given the number of wild goose chases Ive been on over the last several months which were "fixed" by rebooting VS 2008 or some other rediculous workaround.

My program makes a random number and when the user clicks a button in the gridview, i want it to take the random number (0-15) and set the background of the tile with the same position as the random number (0-15) to a different image. How can I just change one of the buttons background? • Do servlet containers prevent web applications from causing each other interference and how do they do it?

  I know that a servlet container, such as Apache Tomcat, runs in a single instance of the JVM, which means all of its servlets will run in the same process. I also know that the architecture of the servlet container means each web application exists in its own context, which suggests it is isolated from other web applications. As depicted here: Accepting that each web application is isolated, I would expect that you could create 2 copies of an identical web application, change the names and context paths of each (as well as any other relevant configuration), and run them in parallel without one affecting the other. The answers to this question appear to support this view. However, a colleague disagrees based on their experience of attempting just that. They took a web application and tried to run 2 separate instances (with different names etc) in the same servlet container and experienced issues with the 2 instances conflicting (I'm unable to elaborate more as I wasn't involved in that work). Based on this, they argue that since the web applications run in the same process space, they can't be isolated and things such as class attributes would end up being inadvertently shared. This answer appears to suggest the same thing The two views don't seem to be compatible, so I ask you: Do servlet containers prevent web applications deployed to the same container from conflicting with each other? If yes, How do they do this? If no, Why does interference occur? and finally, Under what circumstances could separate web applications conflict and cause each other interference?, perhaps scenarios involving resources on the file system, native code, or database connections?

• Multicore solr on Ubuntu 10.04 working for anyone?

  Following instructions from the two sites below, I've installed tomcat6 and solr 1.4 http://gist.github.com/204638 https://wiki.fourkitchens.com/display/TECH/Solr+1.4+on+Ubuntu+9.10+and+CentOS+5 I have successfully got it up and running on a server running 9.04 with multicore support, but on the 10.04 I can't seem to get it to work.   I have a document that looks something like <root> <element> <subelement1 /> <subelement2 /> </element> <element> <subelement2 /> <subelement1 /> </element> </root> In my XSLT sheet in the context of /element[2]/[someNode] I want to get a number that represents the distance of /element[1]/[someNode] (ie, the number of preceding siblings of /element1/[someNode]). For example, in the context of /element[2]/subelement1 I'd like to have some way to get the number 2, the distance from /element[1] to /element[1]/subelement2. I only ever need the distance of the given node name from the first instance of . Intuitively I thought I could construct this like <xsl:variable name="nodename" select="name()" /> <xsl:value-of select="/element[1]/$nodename/preceding-sibling::*" /> but unfortunately this sheet doesn't compile. Is what I'm trying to achieve possible in XSLT?

• Use the repository pattern when using PLINQO generated data?

  I'm "upgrading" an MVC app. Previously, the DAL was a part of the Model, as a series of repositories (based on the entity name) using standard LINQ to SQL queries. Now, it's a separate project and is generated using PLINQO. Since PLINQO generates query extensions based on the properties of the entity, I started using them directly in my controller... and eliminated the repositories all together. It's working fine, this is more a question to draw upon your experience, should I continue down this path or should I rebuild the repositories (using PLINQO as the DAL within the repository files)? One benefit of just using the PLINQO generated data context is that when I need DB access, I just make one reference to the the data context. Under the repository pattern, I had to reference each repository when I needed data access, sometimes needing to reference multiple repositories on a single controller. The big benefit I saw on the repositories, were aptly named query methods (i.e. FindAllProductsByCategoryId(int id), etc...). With the PLINQO code, it's _db.Product.ByCatId(int id) - which isn't too bad either. I like both, but where it gets "harrier" is when the query uses predicates. I can roll that up into the repository query method. But on the PLINQO code, it would be something like _db.Product.Where(x = x.CatId == 1 && x.OrderId == 1); I'm not so sure I like having code like that in my controllers. Whats your take on this?

  Hi All, I develop web application using struts2. I want to improve getting string from forms. For this need trim all string and if obtained string is empty then set null to field. Please, not offer solutions such as: remove the value of such form elements using javascript. create util method which will make it using reflection. Then call it for each form bean. Please verify the EndpointIdentity specified or implied by the EndpointAddress correctly identifies the remote endpoint.   We've just recently converted our project to using Maven for builds and dependency management, and after the conversion I'm getting the following exception while trying to run any JSFUnit tests in my project. All the dependencies and JARs for JSFUnit were pulled with Maven using the JBoss repository (http://repository.jboss.com/maven2/). We're using the following dependencies in the project: jboss-jsfunit-core 1.2.0.Final jboss-jsfunit-richfaces 1.2.0.Final richfaces-ui 3.3.2.GA openfaces 2.0 JSF 1.2_12 Facelets 1.1.14 Before the dependencies were being managed by Maven, we were able to run our JSFUnit tests just fine. I was able to semi-fix the issue by using a ss_css2.jar file that someone had tucked into our WEB-INF/lib directory (from before the Maven conversion). I'm hoping to find out if there's something else I can do to fix the dependencies in Maven rather than resorting to managing some of the dependencies myself.

  In a multi-tenant ASP.NET MVC application based on Rob Conery's MVC Storefront, should I be filtering the tenant's data in the repository or the service layer? 1. Filter tenant's data in the repository: public interface IJobRepository { IQueryable<Job> GetJobs(short tenantId); } 2. Let the service filter the repository data by tenant: public interface IJobService { IList<Job> GetJobs(short tenantId); } My gut-feeling says to do it in the service layer (option 2), but it could be argued that each tenant should in essence have their own "virtual repository," (option 1) where this responsibility lies with the repository. Which is the most elegant approach: option 1, option 2 or is there a better way? Update: I tried the proposed idea of filtering at the repository, but the problem is that my application provides the tenant context (via sub-domain) and only interacts with the service layer. Passing the context all the way to the repository layer is a mission. So instead I have opted to filter my data at the service layer. I feel that the repository should represent all data physically available in the repository with appropriate filters for retrieving tenant-specific data, to be used by the service layer. Final Update: I ended up abandoning this approach due to the unnecessary complexities. See my answer below.
