• Notification framework for object lifecycle

  I am looking for an application, framework, or library that would help us with "object life-cycle management". There are many things that are created for users, departments, and services that, all too often, are left unmanaged. Some examples: user accounts groups SSL certificates access rights databases software license provisionings storage list-serve accounts These objects are created and managed by a wide variety of applications and systems. Typically, a user (person) requests (either explicitly or implicitly) one of these objects. A centralized management tool would help us manage such administration chores as: What objects does user X currently own/manage? Move the ownership of object P to user X; move all objects owned by user X (who was just been fired) to user Y. For all objects of type T that have expired be sure the objects have been disabled or deleted by their provider. How many active (expired, about-to-expire) objects of type P are there? Send periodic notifications to all users who own active objects of type P reminding them of what they own. There is a security alert for objects of type P; send a notification to all users who own these types of objects to take a specific remedial action. Delete or disable a set of objects based on expiration (or some other criteria). These objects are directly managed through their own applications (Active Directory, MySql, file systems, etc.) and may even have their own notification systems, but I want to centralize this into an "object management system". The OMS should allow the association with an external identity provider that defines who the users and groups are (e.g., LDAP, Active Directory) creation of objects association of an object to a specific user and/or group association with an expiration date creation of flexible reporting including letting users know what objects they currently own and their expiration dates integration with an external object "provider" via a plug-in We could write something from scratch, but I am hoping there is something already out there that will help, either an entire application or a set of libraries that provide much of what is needed. • Strategies for managing use of types in Python

  I'm a long time programmer in C# but have been coding in Python for the past year. One of the big hurdles for me was the lack of type definitions for variables and parameters. Whereas I totally get the idea of duck typing, I do find it frustrating that I can't tell the type of a variable just by looking at it. This is an issue when you look at someone else's code where they've used ambiguous names for method parameters (see edit below). In a few cases, I've added asserts to ensure parameters comply with an expected type but this goes against the whole duck typing thing. On some methods, I'll document the expected type of parameters (eg: list of user objects), but even this seems to go against the idea of just using an object and let the runtime deal with exceptions. What strategies do you use to avoid typing problems in Python? Edit: Example of the parameter naming issues: If our code base we have a task object (ORM object) and a task_obj object (higher level object that embeds a task). Needless to say, many methods accept a parameter named 'task'. The method might expect a task or a task_obj or some other construct such as a dictionary of task properties - it is not clear. It is them up to be to look at how that parameter is used in order to work out what the method expects.

• Bluetooth mouse no longer paired after resuming from suspend since upgrading to 13.10

  Since upgrading to 13.10 from 13.04 my mouse no longer connects via bluetooth. In settings it states that the mouse is not paired. Restarting bluetooth with sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart does not help. Restarting the computer does fix the problem if bluetooth is restarted also with the previously mentioned command, but this is not ideal. The mouse worked fine prior to updating to 13.10. The computer is a ThinkPad X230 with a Broadcom 'BCM20702A0' bluetooth module (I think). • Are there legitimate reasons for returning exception objects instead of throwing them?

  This question is intended to apply to any OO programming language that supports exception handling; I am using C# for illustrative purposes only. Exceptions are usually intended to be raised when an problem arises that the code cannot immediately handle, and then to be caught in a catch clause in a different location (usually an outer stack frame). Q: Are there any legitimate situations where exceptions are not thrown and caught, but simply returned from a method and then passed around as error objects? This question came up for me because .NET 4's System.IObserver<T>.OnError method suggests just that: exceptions being passed around as error objects. Let's look at another scenario, validation. Let's say I am following conventional wisdom, and that I am therefore distinguishing between an error object type IValidationError and a separate exception type ValidationException that is used to report unexpected errors: partial interface IValidationError { } abstract partial class ValidationException : System.Exception { public abstract IValidationError[] ValidationErrors { get; } } (The System.Component.DataAnnotations namespace does something quite similar.) • FP for simulation and modelling

  I'm about to start a simulation/modelling project. I already know that OOP is used for this kind of projects. However, studying Haskell made me consider using the FP paradigm for modelling a system of components. Let me elaborate: Let's say I have a component of type A, characterised by a set of data (a parameter like temperature or pressure,a PDE and some boundary conditions,etc.) and a component of type B, characterised by a different set of data(different or same parameter, different PDE and boundary conditions). Let's also assume that the functions/methods that are going to be applied on each component are the same (a Galerkin method for example). If I were to use an OOP approach, I would create two objects that would encapsulate each type's data, the methods for solving the PDE(inheritance would be used here for code reuse) and the solution to the PDE. On the other hand, if I were to use an FP approach, each component would be broken down to data parts and the functions that would act upon the data in order to get the solution for the PDE. This approach seems simpler to me assuming that linear operations on data would be trivial and that the parameters are constant. What if the parameters are not constant(for example, temperature increases suddenly and therefore cannot be immutable)? In OOP, the object's (mutable) state can be used. I know that Haskell has Monads for that. To conclude, would implementing the FP approach be actually simpler,less time consuming and easier to manage (add a different type of component or new method to solve the pde) compared to the OOP one? I come from a C++/Fortran background, plus I'm not a professional programmer, so correct me on anything that I've got wrong.

• how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. I want two things: When the item is focused, the typical orange rectangle should appear over it, and the same When the item is pressed. I have proved with a selector and a custom style but all I get is or the selector doesn't appear or the selector covering the item so I can't see it. If anyone could help me with finding the right code I would be very grateful. Thanks

  Hi I'm using axis1.4 and wss4j. When I define in client-config.wsdd for WSDoAllSender and WSDoAllReceiver different signaturePropFiles where I have different key stores defined with different certificates, I'm able to have different certificates for sending and receiving. But when I use the same signaturePropFiles' with the same keystore. • Problems with Widgets in dojox DataGrid

  I am trying to include some editing Widgets in my dojox.grid.DataGrid seem to be having a lot of difficulty. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work, but something just isn't going right. When I started having problems, I tried to copy almost exactly from the grid tests and model my "breakout" of code just like that, but without success. Basic editing of the Grid seems to work. In the example below, the "Events" column allows edits, but the two columns that are using the cellType attribute don't work. In fact they also seem to ignore the other attributes (like the styles) which would seem to indicate that some sort of issue was run into, but there is nothing in FireBug.   Summary: DataAnnotation's automatic handling of an "int?" is making me rethink using them at all. Maybe I'm missing something and an easy fix but I can't get DataAnnotations to cooperate. I have a public property with my own custom validation attribute: [MustBeNumeric(ErrorMessage = "Must be a number")] public int? Weight { get; set; } The point of the custom validation attribute is do a quick check to see if the input is numeric and display an appropriate error message. The problem is that when DataAnnotations tries to bind a string to the int? is automatically doesn't validate and displays a "The value 'asdf' is not valid for Weight." For the life of me I can't get DataAnnotations to stop handling that so I can take care of it in my custom attribute. This seems like it would be a popular scenario (to validate that the input in numeric) and I'm guessing there's an easy solution but I didn't find it anywhere.

  I am developing a simple game on iPhone and I started with a View based application, and through the UIViewController I am loading a custom UIView that contains some more UIViews and some UIImageViews. I want to detect touch events on some of the UIImageViews, but I wasn't able so far. I've created a second project for testing purposes and figured that UIImageViews handle touch events when the hierarchy is like : UIViewController - UIView - UIImageView, but when it's like : UIViewController - UIView - UIView - UIImageView they are not detected. Notes: - userInteractionEnabled is YES in all cases - all UIViews and UIImageViews I mention above are custom subclasses. Can you think of any reason why, when a custom UIImageView gets deeper in the view hierarchy can't receive touch events?

But I would like to be able to gracefully handle the case where the user doesn't have the custom URL protocol handler installed, yet. In order to be able to do this I need to be able to detect the browser's registered protocol handlers, I would assume from JavaScript.   While playing around with the emulator, I noticed that when trying to view a YouTube video the browser gives an error saying it can not load the page at vnd.youtube:ngc978y6rCU?some=parameters. I don't have an Android device, but by this I can suppose that launching a VIEW intent with the data URI set to vnd.youtube:VIDEO_ID would launch the default YouTube application and watch that video. Now, my application has to be able to display YouTube videos. Right now I have a custom-made YouTube activity which does just that, but I'm thinking of: Removing my custom activity and just launching a VIEW intent with a vnd.youtube:VIDEO_ID Uri, or Testing whether that Intent is available and using it, or, if it's not available, using my custom activity. Is this a good idea? Does this work at all (as I said I have no Android device, I'll just be borrowing one from a friend to test my final application)? Which way should I go?

• Zedgraph - determine length of tic on an axis ?

  In Zedgraph building a line chart. I have some requirements for axes labels which can't be produced automatically so inspired by this other Stackoverflow answer I'm building a custom axis. I can draw the Axis OK and I can place the labels but I want to draw my own tics. To do this I'd like to know the colour/pen width/size etc of the tics on the other axes. Determining the colour and pen width are no problem but finding out the length of a tic is difficult (I mean how long is it drawn away from the axis). I'm using a LineObj to draw the custom tics but I can't figure out how to long to draw them to match other non-custom tics . Does anyone know where this is defined (or have a smarter way of drawing your own tics than using LineObjs ?)

  I am trying to send all my apache logs to syslog-ng(on remote machine) which in turn writes to a file. so I configure syslog-ng this way source s_apache { unix-stream("/var/log/apache_log.socket" max-connections(512) keep-alive(yes)); }; filter f_apache { match("error"); }; destination df_custom { file("/var/log/custom.log"); }; log { source(s_apache); filter(f_apache); destination(df_custom); }; and add the following line to apache2.conf ErrorLog "|/usr/bin/logger -t 'apache' -u /var/log/apache_log.socket" but only logs being written to "/var/log/custom.log" are [Mon Jul 13 17:24:36 2009] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down and [Mon Jul 13 17:26:11 2009] [notice] Apache/2.2.11 (Ubuntu) configured -- resuming normal operations I want all logs to be sent to custom.log..... Please help me.... where am I going wrong?

• Is there any real benefit to using ASP.Net Authentication with ASP.Net MVC?

  I've been researching this intensely for the past few days. We're developing an ASP.Net MVC site that needs to support 100,000+ users. We'd like to keep it fast, scalable, and simple. We have our own SQL database tables for user and user_role, etc. We are not using server controls. Given that there are no server controls, and a custom membershipProvider would need to be created, where is there any benefit left to use ASP.Net Auth/Membership? The other alternative would seem to be to create custom code to drop a UniqueID CustomerID in a cookie and authenticate with that. Or, if we're paranoid about sniffers, we could encrypt the cookie as well. Is there any real benefit in this scenario (MVC and customer data is in our own tables) to using the ASP.Net auth/membership framework, or is the fully custom solution a viable route?
