• HP Pavilion tx2000 - Wifi adapter no longer works after moving from 12.04 to a 12.10 clean install

  I have a HP Pavilion tx2000 that I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 on for a couple of months without any problems (wifi worked great) until yesterday when my hard drive failed. I replaced the hard drive and decided to install Ubuntu 12.10. Unlike 12.04, the wifi did not work after the installation finished and all the updates where installed (over Ethernet). The network drop down in the top right didn't even show a wireless option. I Googled about for a bit and found some solutions that seemed like they might work. Unfortunately they did not. Here is what I tried: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer Restart the computer. And the wifi still didn't work. At which point I panicked a bit and tried to undo the previous commands by running: sudo apt-get remove b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source Restart the computer. The wifi still doesn't work. This is where I stopped because I have no idea what I am doing and don't want to mess something up. The network drop down still doesn't show a wireless option and the hardware wifi switch on the laptop is amber (it turns blue when the wifi is on). Pushing the hardware switch turns the hard block back on and I have to run sudo rfkill unblock all multiple times again to turn it off. Any help is appreciated! • How to shorten brain context switch delay when need to use new technology\framework?

  The problem is when I have to deal with a new framework\library\language it completely slows my work process, at first it's kind of shock, you're sitting on your place about a day doing nothing surfing the net, because you simply can't do anything even read docs, then, on the second day I realize that I definitely should do something and starting read about it, then I realize that I don't understand it, then I'm reading until I got feeling that I should show some results immediately and then I'm writing the code quite fast and the job doesn't seem to be difficult. Then job is done and I won't probably return to that technology\framework for a month or a year or never at all. And I will almost certainly forget almost everything about it after a month. To illustrate by checkpoints I experience: shock, long studying times, work with the new tech briefly, never use it afterwards, then I completely forget it. So what would be the solution here?

• Issue with Mapping Textures to Models in Blender

  I've been trying to texture a model using Blender, but when I draw on the UV Editor it doesn't show up on the model, and I can't draw on the model itself. I've tried saving the image and the 3D View is set to Texture. Everything seems to be in order and I've followed several tutorials, but none of them seem to work with the version I'm using (2.64-- update was necessary for import plugin) and I'm absolutely stumped. How can I draw textures to the model? If not within Blender itself, how do I export/import the textures? EDIT: Vertex Paint works, though it is insufficient for my purposes. In addition, moving to the rendered view produces a solid-color model with none of the applied textures.

• Wastage of resources in Virtualization

  I have asked this question on SO, but was suggested that i ask it here on SF, so here it goes. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3010753/wastage-of-resources-in-virtualization I am not sure if this is the right place to ask the question. However i hope it is. When looking for a VPS earlier today, I was trying to understand how each container would work in the background. Keeping in mind the fact that the operating system uses most of the memory and power on a system, wouldn't having multiple operating systems in the same machine mean more wastage of resources. For instance if i was running centOS on a dedicated box and it was running lets say 20 background OS level processes. Then i go and install a virtualization platform and install 5 more centOS virtual machines in the same system which are exactly the same as the host operating system. Doesn't this mean duplication of those 20 processes 6 times? So internally the context switching is happening between 120 processes instead of 20? Further Notes: Here is an example of what i am thinking: I have a master-slave configuration for a long running, cpu + memory intensive process, which can be distributed to 4 machines. Lets say when the process runs on these 4 machines with lets say 1 Gh CPU and 1 Gig RAM, i get 400 results per hour from the cluster (assuming 100 results from one machine) . Now i get a bigger machine ( lets say 4Gh and 4 Gig RAM), have 4 virtual hosts on it with 1 Gz CPU and 1 Gig RAM. Will this configuration give me the same 4 results per hour from these 4 virtual hosts?

• Log oddities: 404s for client-garbled image URLs

  I've noticed some odd 404s which appear to be broken URL rewriting code: Our deep zoom view generates images URLs like this: /media/204/service/dzi/1/1_files/7/0_0.jpg I see some - well under <1% - requests for slightly altered URLs: /media/204/s/rvice/d/i/1/1_files/7/0_0.jpg These requests come from IP addresses all over the world (US, Canada, China, Russia, India, Israel, etc.), desktop and mobile users with multiple user-agents (Chrome, IE, Firefox, Mobile Safari, etc.), and there is plenty of normal activity in the same session so I'm assuming this is either widespread malware or some broken proxy service. I have not seen them from anything other than images, which suggests that this may be some sort of content filter. Has anyone else seen this? My CDN logs show the first request on June 8th ramping up from several dozen to several hundred per day.

• Lock screen does not display all users (ubuntu 14.10)

  When I lock my screen using ctrl+alt+L, I am not able to see other users listed within the lock screen so I can switch instead. The lock screen shows only my name as an option for login, however I would like to switch to other user accounts. In Ubuntu 12.04 it used to show all system available users in lock screen and I was able to switch easily. Last night I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and this option is gone. How do I set back this option?

• Force gdm login screen to the primary monitor

  I have two monitors attached to my video card. Primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1280x1024 and the second has 1920x1200. My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show the login screen always on the primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Nvidia GT9500 videcard in Twinview mode. I can't use Xinerama because vpdau doesn't work correclty in this mode. What I have found is that mouse pointer always appears in the center of union of the screens and center is always on the monitor with higher resolution. Login screen always shows where mouse cursor is. Now my primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1920x1080. The problem still persists, mouse cursor always appears in the right-bottom corner of the second monitor.

• My New Dell Workstation T-7500 gives electric shock

  Just bought Dell T-7500 Workstation. When installation technician came to Install the workstation, he got an electric shock when he touched the Start Button. He also got shock when he touched Front Panel. No shock when touching rest of the Chassis. He called Dell Support & tried to troubleshoot by taking out various wires etc but did not help. I touched the same places & I also got shock. We checked everything possible including connecting to various outlets but it didn't solve the problem. Installation subcontractor said that they are not supposed to troubleshoot anything on new system, just install it & they made notes & left. I called my sales guy & it was weekend so he said he will take care of it on Monday. Here are my concerns : (1) Why does that happen ? Although it is a mild shock & it won't kill you but might damage other parts of workstation ? (2) Is this common for workstations ? (3) What should I do ? Of course Dell will try to troubleshoot again but should I let them do that OR ask for a New System ? (4) Wheat would happen if I continue using it till the new system arrives ? Thank You.

My first attempt made me realise I couldn't just randomise the y value; there had to be some sanity in the peaks and troughs. I have Googled around a bit, but either I can't find something simple enough for me or I am using the wrong keywords. • Mouse buttons and all keyboard buttons except alt and super randomly stops working

  A couple of times lately, unity appears to not accept button presses from neither the mouse or the keyboard. This happens after a random amount of time, usually a couple of hours, or right after boot. The weird thing is: I can still move the mouse around. I can press alt to get the unity menu thingy (but i can't type anything in it) I can press super to show/hide the unity search. None of the applications seem to get the input Ive tried connecting a second mouse, same issue I can press ctrl+alt+f1 to drop to a shell tty The shell works fine Now, this is definitely a bug, probably in unity(?), but it's hard to search for when I don't know what's causing it. Is there something I can do to debug? I've found some people that appears to be having the same problem with the mouse only, but most of the time, their questions are unanswered or closed for being too specific. What would be a good strategy to fix this? Should I report it as a bug?

• Ubuntu won't start

  I've had Ubuntu installed, using WUBI, for some time now - a few months or so. It's worked fine until now, allowing me to login, use it's features etc... Two days ago, I turned on my computer and started Ubuntu. It loaded the GUI fine but just showed the loading screen and even after waiting 10 mins on this screen it still wouldn't show me the login page. I am enthusiastic about web design and development and all of my work, along with my portfolio is stored in Ubuntu. Cheers, Tomas EDIT: I am using 12.04 LTS.

• Nautilus doesn't allow adding/removing bookmarks

  I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.10 (actually, I've done two fresh installs, hoping that trying again would get this working). I don't seem to have the ability to add or remove bookmarks from Nautilus. The ones that are there by default (Home, Desktop, Documents, etc.) work fine. I can right click on them and rename them. However, I cannot remove any of them. The option is there "Remove" but disabled/grayed out. The same is true if I try to add bookmarks. I go to "Files - Bookmarks", and all the bookmarks show up, but the buttons at the bottom to add, remove, or re-order the bookmarks are simply disabled. What am I doing wrong?

  We have a website which we want to show adverts in - However, these are custom adverts uploaded by the webmaster, not the Google adverts, or any adverts the network chooses. Ideally, there would be both options. We were considering developing our own advert-management system, but looking at the big picture, it might be better to consider other alternatives. Website is currently developed in C# / ASP.Net (Web Forms) Are there any recommendations to some open-source delivery networks and/or external hosted advert delivery networks? Personally I've used Google's DFP, however sometimes it is not so easy to get a Google AdSense account approved, especially while developing a new website and it not yet being launched. • build command by concatenating string in bash

  I have a bash script that builds a command-line in a string based on some parameters before executing it in one go. The parts that are concatenated to the command string are supposed to be separated by pipes to facilitate a "streaming" of data through each component. A very simplified example: #!/bin/bash part1=gzip -c part2=some_other_command cmd="cat infile" if [ ! "$part1" = "" ] then cmd+=" | $part1" fi if [ ! "$part2" = "" ] then cmd+=" | $part2" fi cmd+="> outfile" #show command. It looks ok echo $cmd #run the command. fails with pipes $cmd For some reason the pipes don't seem to work. When I run this script i get different error messages relating usually to the first part of the command (before the first pipe). So my question is whether or not it is possible to build a command in this way, and what is the best way to do it?

• Games with multiple flash files not working

  I have download a flash game, since that's show the person coded it, and it is in multiple flash files to reduce overall file size or something. When I try to play it, I can only use the content within that one flash file, leading me to believe that it does not call upon other files within my computer. I kept the same file structure and everything as the download was, and another version of the same game I had on my windows laptop before my laptop died. It worked fine there, calling the files like it was supposed to. Is it just an Ubuntu/Linux/Unix-based bug, or is something going wrong? I've tried it in browser (firefox) and offline (gnash) and neither worked properly. Can anyone help me with this? Perhaps helping me find a way to get my game to work properly?

• Removing date from Google SERP

  We are going through our site analysing the SEO. I find that sometimes on a google results page, some results show a date, others don't. Example (from same query): I prefer the result not to have the date in it, as 20 Oct 2009 probably has an adverse effect on the clickability of the result. Is this Google putting it in? Or the page itself? Or a combination of both (IE, if over a certain age, it includes date).
