    Given the following text /feeds/tag/remote-desktop 1320 17007 22449240 /feeds/tag/terminal-server 1328 15805 20989040 /foo/23211/test 1490 11341 16898090 Let's say we want to convert those numbers to their comma-fied forms, like so /feeds/tag/remote-desktop 1,320 17,007 22,449,240 /feeds/tag/terminal-server 1,328 15,805 20,989,040 /foo/23211/test 1,490 11,341 16,898,090 (don't worry about fixing the fixed-width ASCII spacing, that's a problem for another day) This is the best regex I could come up with; it's based on this JavaScript regex solution from Regex Ninja Steven Levithan: return Regex.Replace(s, @"\b(?<!\/)\d{4,}\b(?<!\/)", delegate(Match match) { string output = ""; string m = match.Value; int len = match.Length; for (int i = len - 1; i >= 0 ; i--) { output = m[i] + output; if ((len - i) % 3 == 0) output = "," + output; } if (output.StartsWith(",")) output = output.Substring(1, output.Length-1); return output; }); In a related question, there is a very clever number comma insertion regex proposed: text = Regex.Replace(text, @"(?<=\d)(?=(\d{3})+$)", ",") However this requires an end anchor $ which, as you can see, I don't have in the above text -- the numbers are "floating" in the rest of the text. I suspect there is a cleaner way to do this than my solution? After writing this, I just realized I could combine them, and put one Regex inside the other, like so: return Regex.Replace(s, @"\b(?<!\/)\d{4,}\b(?<!\/)", delegate(Match match) { return Regex.Replace(match.Value, @"(?<=\d)(?=(\d{3})+$)", ","); });

  • Declarative authorization and the if_attribute not working...

    I've been having almost the same issues as Victor Martin (you can see the questions asked here). I've got declarative authorization working for just about everything that doesn't involve using conditionals. E.g. has_permission_on :users, :to => [:edit, :update, :destroy] do if_attribute :user => is { current_user } end Are there any common pitfalls with Declarative Authorization? I'm using authlogic and I'm suspicious the 'current_user' method in the application controller might be the source of the problem.

    I like to format all my HTML with tabs for neatness and readability. Recently I started using PHP and now I have a lot of HTML output that comes from in between PHP tags. Those output lines all line up one the left side of the screen. I have to use /n to make a line go to the next. Is there anything like that for forcing tabs, or any way to have neat HTML output coming from PHP?

  • Using a FormattedText object, how do I find out how much of my text was actually displayed?

    If I have code like this: FormattedText text = new FormattedText(sTheBook, System.Globalization.CultureInfo.CurrentUICulture, System.Windows.FlowDirection.LeftToRight, new Typeface("Times New Roman"), 13, Brushes.Black); text.MaxTextWidth = 300; text.MaxTextHeight = 600; text.TextAlignment = TextAlignment.Justify; dc.DrawText(text, new Point(10, 0)); ...then, if it is long, only some of the text that I passed in (via sTheBook) will be displayed on the screen. I need to know how much was displayed so I can display the rest later! I can easily measure an amount of text, but it seems silly to do a search by rendering and re-rendering my text over and over until I find the piece that fits exactly. Thanks!

    I'm just trying to convert some C code over to Java and I'm having a little trouble with String.printf. In C, to get a specific width based on a variable, I can use: printf("Current index = %*d\n", sz, index); and it will format the integer to be a specific size based on sz. Trying: System.out.println(String.format("Current index = %*d\n", sz, index)); results in an error since it doesn't like the *. I currently have the following kludge: System.out.println(String.format("Current index = %" + sz + "d\n", index)); but I'm hoping there's a slightly better way, yes?

    What is the format string modifier for char-as-number? I want to read in a number never exceeding 255 (actually much less) into an unsigned char type variable using sscanf. Using the typical char source[] = "x32"; char separator; unsigned char dest; int len; len = sscanf(source,"%c%d",&separator,&dest); // validate and proceed... I'm getting the expected warning: argument 4 of sscanf is type char*, int* expected. As I understand the specs, there is no modifier for char (like %sd for short, or %lld for 64-bit long) is it dangerous? (will overflow just overflow (roll-over) the variable or will it write outside the allocated space?) is there a prettier way to achieve that than allocating a temporary int variable? ...or would you suggest an entirely different approach altogether?

Awesomest would be to have eclipse just do it, but since we're really just recovering from one ex-employee that thought he was too pretty for coding conventions, a less-friendly tool that would do it right just once would suffice.

  • Access Expression problem: it's too complex, so how do I turn it in to a function?

    Access 2007 is telling me that my new expression is to complex. It used to work when we had 10 service levels, but now we have 19! Great! I've asked this question in SuperUser and someone suggested I try it over here. Suggestions are I turn it in to a function - but I'm not sure where to begin and what the function would look like. My expression is checking the COST of our services in the [PriceCharged] field and then assigning the appropriate HOURS [Servicelevel] when I perform a calculation to work out how much REVENUE each colleague has made when working for a client. The [EstimatedTime] field stores the actual hours each colleague has worked. [EstimatedTime]/[ServiceLevel]*[PriceCharged] Below is the breakdown of my COST to HOURS expression.   • Disabling normal link behaviour on click with an if statement in Jquery?

    I've been banging my head with this all day, trying anything and everything I can think of to no gain. I'm no Jquery guru, so am hoping someone here can help me out. What I'm trying to do in pseudo code (concept) seems practical and easy to implement, but obviously not so =D What I have is a navigation sidebar, with sub menu's within some li's, and a link at the head of each li. When a top level link is clicked, I want the jquery to check if the link has a sibling ul. If it does, the link doesn't act like a link, but slides down the sibling sub nav. If there isn't one, the link should act normally.   • Is there any way to set or code breakpoints conditionally?

    I've been wondering this for a while - is there a way to code/program breakpoints...? Conditionally? For example, can I specify something like - "when this variable becomes this value, break and open the debugger"? (Would be quite useful, especially in long loops when you want to debug loop execution of a late loop value.) I suppose this may be IDE-specific since debugging is implemented differently in different IDEs... I'd be interested to know how to do this in any IDE, but specifically in Eclipse and Visual Studio.
