• Deploying Fusion Order Demo on 11.1.1.6 by Antony Reynolds

  Do you need to build a demo for a customer? Why not to use Fusion Order Demo (FOD) and modify it to do some extra things. Great idea, let me install it on one of my Linux servers I said "Turns out there are a few gotchas, so here is how I installed it on a Linux server with JDeveloper on my Windows desktop." Task 1: Install Oracle JDeveloper Studio I already had JDeveloper 11.1.1.6 with SOA extensions installed so this was easy. Task 2: Install the Fusion Order Demo Application First thing to do is to obtain the latest version of the demo from OTN, I obtained the R1 PS5 release. Gotcha #1 – my winzip wouldn’t unzip the file, I had to use 7-Zip. Task 3: Install Oracle SOA Suite On the domain modify the setDomainEnv script by adding “-Djps.app.credential.overwrite.allowed=true” to JAVA_PROPERTIES and restarting the Admin Server. Also set the JAVA_HOME variable and add Ant to the path. I created a domain with separate SOA and BAM servers and also set up the Node Manager to make it easier to stop and start components. • Issue with multiplayer interpolation

  In a fast-paced multiplayer game I'm working on, there is an issue with the interpolation algorithm. You can see it clearly in the image below. Cyan: Local position when a packet is received Red: Position received from packet (goal) Blue: Line from local position to goal when packet is received Black: Local position every frame As you can see, the local position seems to oscillate around the goals instead of moving between them smoothly. • Under kvm, Vista guest OS install halts on black screen

  I am using kvm on my ubuntu-server-10.04 amd64 dual core PC. I am trying to install a Windows Vista guest OS. The installation proceeds properly until the system reboot halfway into the installation process, at which point it stops on a black screen and CPU usage goes to near zero. I created the vm with virt-install as follows: virt-install -n vista --connect qemu:///system -r 1024 -vcpus 2 \ --os-type windows --os-variant vista \ --virt-type kvm --accelerate \ -c /dev/sr0 \ --disk path=/dev/main/vista-hd \ --network bridge=br0 \ --vnc --noautoconsole Where /dev/sr0 is the physical drive with the vista installation DVD, and /dev/main/vista-hd is a 20-GB lvm logical volume I created. A number of people seem to have had success installing vista under KVM, but I haven't been able to determine what is causing my problem. Ideas anyone?

• Encryption of OS X to Windows SMB traffic and password

  I connected to a Windows Server 2008 R2 shared folder from a Mac OS X Mountain Lion computer over the Internet using this command: mount -t smbfs //user@server/path/to/share local_folder Is traffic encrypted by default? What settings do I look at (if any) to know whether it was encrypted? If it wasn't encrypted, what's the easiest way to encrypt it? Was the password I typed at the command line encrypted? Update: sysadmin1138 has addressed the password question. Does anyone know how I can tell if the traffic itself is being encrypted?

• How to get tilemap transparency color working with TiledLib's Demo implementation?

  So the problem I'm having is that when using Nick Gravelyn's tiledlib pipeline for reading and drawing tmx maps in XNA, the transparency color I set in Tiled's editor will work in the editor, but when I draw it the color that's supposed to become transparent still draws. The closest things to a solution that I've found are - 1) Change my sprite batch's BlendState to NonPremultiplied (found this in a buried Tweet). 2) Get the pixels that are supposed to be transparent at some point then Set them all to transparent. Solution 1 didn't work for me, and solution 2 seems hacky and not a very good way to approach this particular problem, especially since it looks like the custom pipeline processor reads in the transparent color and sets it to the color key for transparency according to the code, just something is going wrong somewhere. At least that's what it looks like the code is doing.   I have a simple script to join an AD domain and rename the computer. When I execute these commands directly on the CLI, it works fine. When I execute the same via batch file, I get an error saying The network path was not found I am running as Administrator with full privileges. I have googled around microsoft forums but my case is unique because it works from the CLI and not from the batch file netdom join %%computername%% /domain:OPSCODEDEMO.COM /userd:Administrator /passwordd:xxx netdom renamecomputer %%computername%% /NewName:%hostname% /Force The environment is Windows 2k8 R2 SP1 running on Ninefold Cloud (Xenserver).

• cannot move file: "file cannot be found" (Windows XP)

  I have some CR2 files in a subfolder of My Documents called My Photos on a Windows XP PC. I want to move them across a WIFI network to an external HDD attached to a Windows 7 PC. I have read/write permissions on the external HDD, as I mapped to this HDD using the Windows 7 user account. When I try to move a single CR2 file, I receive "Cannot copy IMG_3317: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name." If I refresh the source folder, the file is still there. It is not read only, and I have read/write access to the source file. I can view its properties. Why can't I move this file? I have been able to move similar files in the past.

• Multiple PXE boots on the same subnet for RIS and WDS

  We are looking to migrate off our existing server 2003 sp2 machine, running RIS (which I know is WDS as of Server 2003 Sp2, but to be clear..) with a bunch of legacy RiSETUP images to a Server 2008 r2 box. Because the change in architecture (x86 to x64), and a limitation of the Server 2008 upgrade path that won't allow mixed-mode WDS services to be upgraded, I am forced to look at running Server 2003 for RIS and Server 2008 R2 for WDS for Windows 7 on the same network. The problem I'm facing is how to deal with both PXE services at the same time? I'd still like the existing RIS server to be available for production use, but start working on WDS for deploying Windows 7. Is there a way to have a sort of PXE "chooser" ? Or some other mechanism to be able to select which server the client should download the boot image from? Thanks!

• Running .net application over a network

  Hello, I need some advice please. I need to enable a .Net application to run over a network share, the problem is that this will be on clients network shares and so the path will not be identical. I've had a quick look at ClickOnce and the publish options in VS2008 but it wants a specific network share location - and I'm assuming this location gets stored somewhere when it does its thing. At the moment the job is being done with a old VB6 application and so gets around all these security issues, but that application is poorly written and almost impossible to maintain so it really needs to go. Is it possible for the domain controller to be set up to allow this specific .Net application to execute? Any other options would be welcomed as I want to get this little application is very business critical. I aught to say that the client networks are schools, and thus are often quite locked down as are the client machines, so manually adding exceptions to each client machine is a big no no. Marlon

  I have often heard unit tests help programmers build confidence in their software. But is it enough for verifying that software requirements are met? I am losing confidence that software is working just because the unit tests pass. We have experienced some failures in production deployment due to an untested\unverified execution path. These failures are sometimes quite large, impact business operations and often requires an immediate fix. The failure is very rarely traced back to a failing unit test. We have large unit test bodies that have reasonable line coverage but almost all of these focus on individual classes and not on their interactions. Manual testing seems to be ineffective because the software being worked on is typically large with many execution paths and many integration points with other software. It is very painful to manually test all of the functionality and it never seems to flush out all the bugs. Are we doing unit testing wrong when it seems we still are failing to verify the software correctly before deployment? Or do most shops have another layer of automated testing in addition to unit tests?

I would like to scale a web application to the Cloud and wanted to know if anyone had any experience calculating costs and could tell me how I would go about that. I have NO experience with cloud services at all. Currently my production environment consists of two web servers and one database server. If the application continues on a linear growth path, eventually, I want to scale to the cloud to avoid any more long term commitments to extra hardware. I want to be able to create a similar environment I have now as a baseline. Have this as my fixed cost that I will always have. I also want to calculate my variable costs that will increase with more users or bandwidth. I don't have a preferred cloud vendor. Amazon, Rackspace, Terremark or any other is fine as long as understand how to calculate my fixed and variable costs.

  I'm trying to apply a registry fix for an Outlook/O365 issue on a user's account. The issue is that "regedit" is blocked by a domain GPO. I'm able to run "gpedit" using the local admin account. Question : When I run "regedit as the local admin, am I modifying the registry for the local admin user or the domain user who's actually logged onto the workstation? I'm trying to apply the following fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2843677 Also, the path for the above mentioned registry should end in " \Preferences" which is what I'm unable to locate.   We've set up some hotkeys in the ATI Catalyst Control Panel on a communal machine, and we're trying to share this among a number of users, possibly all users. The profile is stored as MyProfile.xml in the Local Settings tree; the profile can be loaded through a shortcut, but unfortunately the Profilename switch simply expects the name of the profile rather than the path to the XML file. And while we can copy the profile to appropriate folders under other users accounts, the mere presence of the XML isn't enough to make the profile available to the user. A quick scan of the registry didn't reveal much, though I suspect there is something in there to be aware of. Any ideas on how we can share this profile?

  I have a new Windows 7 machine named PAP44 in the PAP workgroup. The networking is set to "Work" mode for the wired LAN. I have a couple of users and I've shared a folder and set it so both users can read/write. Confusingly for me, rather than sharing just that folder (as I'm used to with older versions of Windows) it appears to be sharing a path (\\pap44\users\...\myFolder) From another machine on the LAN, running XP, when I go to \\PAP44\Users I'm asked for a username and password, but neither of the usernames+passwords work. It just jumps back to the username and password dialogue, except that the username I entered gets prefixed with PAP44\ My end goal is to get my Debian/Ubuntu machines to be able to access this share, but first of all I thought I'd try to get it working in Windows, after all, that's supposed to be easy! Is there another step? (PS. I am not a "hit and run" case!)

  On my desktop PC I've been using Kubuntu 10.04 for about a year. Recently I've updated Firefox to version 4 using aptitude and the mozilla-team/firefox-stable repository. Since then, I can't run it when I'm logged in through a VNC session. Firefox crashes immediately: when I try to run it from the console I get this error: ###!!!   I've got a site with ~500 registered members, 300 of which are what you'd call "active". Site data is kept in a MySQL dbase. I'd like to add a myBB forum to the site, but this question applies to any forum really. What I very much want to avoid is requiring my users to register both on the site and on the forum because my userbase is not technically literate and this would confuse a lot of them. However the forum software has its own registration, login, cookie, and password management system which naturally are different from the site's mechanics. I envision the following possibilities: install myBB into the existing database and customize the login code to unify the two systems. This would probably mean changing the site's code to use the myBB system as that would likely be less painful to refactor and wouldn't hurt future myBB upgrade ability. install myBB into separate database and write a bridging script of some sort that auto-registers existing site users with the forum if they elect to participate. Also check new forum registrations against the site's username list to prevent newcomers from taking existing names. run them fully separate and force users to re-register (easiest for ME, but least desirable for them) I would like a suggested course of action from those who have trod this path before...
