• Play in NetBeans IDE (Part 2)

  Peter Hilton was one of many nice people I met for the first time during the last few days constituting JAX London. He did a session today on the Play framework which, if I understand it correctly, is an HTML5 framework. It doesn't use web.xml, Java EE, etc. It uses Scala internally, as well as in its templating language.  Support for Play would, I guess, based on the little I know about it right now, consist of extending the HTML5 application project, which is new in NetBeans IDE 7.3. The workflow I imagine goes as follows. You'd create a new HTML5 application project, at which point you can choose a variety of frameworks and templates (Coffee Script, Angular, etc), which comes out of the box with the HTML5 support (i.e., Project Easel) in NetBeans IDE 7.3. Then, once the project is created, you'll right-click it and go to the Project Properties dialog, where you'll be able to enable Play support: At this stage, i.e., when you've checked the checkbox above and then clicked OK, all the necessary Play files will be added to your project, e.g., the routes file and the application.conf, for example. And then you have a Play application. • Top 10 things I Learned this October

  Last week, I attended the second largest IT conference. It was Gartner Symposium IT Expo held in Orlando, Florida. Earlier this month, I also had the opportunity to be part of the largest IT conference earlier in the month – Oracle Open World . Both were gatherings for senior IT professionals – CIOs, Senior IT  and Line of Business executives, and Developers. SOA is NOT dead, it is more important than ever before – it is an imperative!  #8. The big question around IT security is not “what will you do IF?” but “what will you do WHEN?” #7. General Colin Powell is an IT guy! Aside from having served as National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as the U.S. Secretary of State. Gen Colin Powell was an inspirational speaker at the Gartner Symposium and it was clear he understands IT and the powerful impact it has on our society and our youth today. #6. Change will happen, we need to plan for it! #5. When everything is connected and just works, we have harnessed the power of technology. Middleware is at the heart of social, mobile and cloud. #4. Innovation is happening everywhere! Attending both IT events I was able to hear from companies of all sizes and across industries – including Tesco, Nike, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, International Speedway--  they all discussed how they are transforming their companies and their industries. #3. “One size fits all” strategy does not work instead it alienates IT and business. The PACE Layered Application Strategy is a framework that allows IT to have that Nexus of Forces conversation with the business. #2. To stay relevant, we need to hire the innovation workers, develop for that innovation layer. #1. My smartphone is the most valuable tool I own! Everyday with it, I am able to communicate via phone, email, text with family, friends, colleagues. I am able to look up directions to my hotel, make reservations at restaurants, view my calendar, take pictures, record messages, check in for flights and so much more…. • Webcast On-Demand: Building Java EE Apps That Scale

Further, we had several interesting questions asked by our audience, and we thought we'd share a sampling of those here for you - just in case you had the same queries yourself. Enjoy! What is the largest Coherence deployment out there? We have seen deployments with over 500 JVMs in the Coherence cluster, and deployments with over 1000 JVMs using the Coherence jar file, in one system. On the management side there is an ecosystem of monitoring tools from Oracle and third parties with dashboards graphing values from Coherence's JMX instrumentation. For lifecycle management we have seen a lot of custom scripting over the years, but we've also integrated closely with WebLogic to leverage its management ecosystem for deploying Coherence-based applications and managing process life cycles. That integration introduces a new Java EE archive type, the Grid Archive or GAR, which embeds in an EAR and can be seen by a WAR in WebLogic. That integration also doesn't require any extra WebLogic licensing if Coherence is licensed. How is Coherence different from a NoSQL Database like MongoDB? Coherence can be considered a NoSQL technology. It pre-dates the NoSQL movement, having been first released in 2001 whereas the term "NoSQL" was coined in 2009. Coherence has a key-value data model primarily but can also be used for document data models. Coherence manages data in memory currently, though disk persistence is in a future release currently in beta testing. Where the data is managed yields a few differences from the most well-known NoSQL products: access latency is faster with Coherence, though well-known NoSQL databases can manage more data. Coherence also has features that well-known NoSQL database lack, such as grid computing, eventing, and data source integration. Finally Coherence has had 15 years of maturation and hardening from usage in mission-critical systems across a variety of industries, particularly financial services. Can I use Coherence for local caching? Yes, you get additional features beyond just a java.util.Map: you get expiration capabilities, size-limitation capabilities, eventing capabilites, etc. Are there APIs available for GoldenGate HotCache? It's mostly a black box. You configure it, and it just puts objects into your caches. However you can treat it as a glass box, and use Coherence event interceptors to enhance its behavior - and there are use cases for that. Are Coherence caches updated transactionally? Coherence provides several mechanisms for concurrency control. If a project insists on full-blown JTA / XA distributed transactions, Coherence caches can participate as resources. But nobody does that because it's a performance and scalability anti-pattern. At finer granularity, Coherence guarantees strict ordering of all operations (reads and writes) against a single cache key if the operations are done using Coherence's "EntryProcessor" feature. And Coherence has a unique feature called "partition-level transactions" which guarantees atomic writes of multiple cache entries (even in different caches) without requiring JTA / XA distributed transaction semantics.

• tightvnc authentication failure

  When I run a tightvnc client to establish a VNC session I sometimes receive an error message that suggests there are repeated failed VNC login attempts or a brute force attack. The message dialog title is "unsupported security type" and the text content is "too many authentication failures, try another connection? yes/no". This problem goes away if I reboot the Ubuntu server and reload the VNC server program and try again. From that point, it will work for multiple VNC sessions. My VNC sessions are typically about 20 minutes. At some time in the future, the problem may recur so it seems correlated to the time the server has been up or the time tightvnc has been loaded. Typically it takes only a day or so before the problem comes back. I am using tightvnc 1.3 on an server running Ubuntu 12.04. The version of vncserver is rather dated because that seems to be all that is available from tightvnc for linux servers. On the client side I use the newest Java-based VNC client (version 2.5) for both Windows access and Ubuntu access. All my VNC sessions are via SSH. I am the only user and I will typically use only the same client computer. How can I stop this problem from recurring? Edit I found the log file. This is a small excerpt of what I am seeing. Essentially, various IPs, not my own, are attempting to connect. • Group Policy error 1006 with and error code 52

  I have a hyper-v cluster operating on win2k8 R2 in a 2003 forest. These servers are at our NOC with a DC that connects to our PDC at HQ via a persistent VPN. The cluster boxes are reporting a error event ID 1006 shown below. The DC is also reporting an error 5805 also shown below. I have found numorus posts regarding 1006 errors, but none for error ID 52's. It's weird, I can ping and I can browse network shares on the DC from each. I thought maybe a DNS or net work issue, but nslook up works too. I don't have any experience with the Java EE before at the server side. Let me begin what i learned about the system and still couldn't find the solution: We have an Oracle Application Server (10.1.) and Oracle Database server (9.2.), the software guys wrote a kind of big J2EE project (X project) using specifically JSF 1.2 with Ajax which is only used in this project. They actively use PL/SQL in their code. So, we started the application server (Solaris machine), everything seems OK. users start using the app starting Monday from different locations (app 200 have user accounts,i just checked and see that the connection pool is set right, the session are active only 15 minutes). After sometime (2 days) CPU utilization gets high,%60, at night it is still same nothing changed (the online user amount is nearly 1 or 2 at this time), even it starts using the CPU allocated for other applications on the same server because they freed If we don't restart the server, the utilization becomes %90 following 2 days, application is so slow that end users starts calling. The main problem is software engineers say that code is clear, and the System and DBA managers say that we have the correct configuration,the other applications seems OK why this problem happens only for X application. I start copying the DB to a test platform and upgrade it to the latest version, also did in same with the application server (Weblogic) if there is a bug or not. i only tested by myself only one user and weblogic admin panel i can track the threads and dump them. i noticed that there are some threads showing as a hogging. when i checked the manuals and control the trace i see that it directs me the line number where PL/SQL code is called from a .java file. The software eng. says that yes we have really complex PL/SQL codes but what's the relation with Application server? this is the problem of DB server, i guess they're right... I know the question has many holes, i'd like to give more in detail but i appreciate the way you guide me. Thanks in advance ... • Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server does not give out all available licenses (solved)

  I installed the Terminal Server role in Windows Server 2003 Standard 64-bits. Still, only 2 connections are allowed. The License Manager says that there are 10 Device CALs available, which is correct, and that none are given out. For good measure I let the server reboot, to no effect. Before this, there was another server (same Windows, except that it is 32 bits) active as a licensing server. I removed the role first and then then added it to the new server. I then removed the Terminal Server Licensing Server component off the old one and added it to the new one. After that, I added to licenses. When that didn't give the required result, I rebooted to new server. Still, the new server, with licenses and all, acts as if it has the 2 license RDP. The server are all stand-alone, there is no active directory been set up. Both servers are in different workgroups. Update (4/12/10): The server has changed the entries in the Terminal Server Licensing a few times. After installing the licenses it added an entry of which the exact phrasing I forgot but it was about temporary Windows 2003 device licenses. Later it added Windows Server 2003 - TS Per Device CAL. The temporary held 2 licenses (standard RDP licenses, I think) and the other 10. At some point, seemingly unrelated from the testing we did, it used a licenses from the new pool. This morning, 2 licenses were used from the pool of 10 and only 1 from the temporary/RDP pool (I wish I had screenshots to show, it changed every few hours oir so it seems). Although I had already activated the server over the internet, and re-activated it, I decided to go through the whole procedure by phone. Update 2 (4/12/10) The problem has been solved. It seems the activation over the web, while it said to have succeeded, did not work correctly. After activating by phone, it did work. What was different from the old setup and what put me on the wrong foot from that moment, was that I now need to create seperate user account because a session with one user account will be taken over by someone else when that account is used by that person. On the previous server, it was possible to open several sesions with the same account. We now use Per Device licenses, I'm not sure what was used before. Thanks all for the replies.

  Problem Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition (and possibly previous versions as well, I haven't tested them) has no network connections after boot until at least 1 user logs in. This means any services that require networking (e.g. openssh-server) are not available until someone logs in locally either via gdm, kdm, or a TTY. Background Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition uses the NetworkManager service to take commands from the nm-applet in Gnome (or it's equivalent in KDE). As I understand it, while NetworkManager is running at boot, it is not issued any commands to connect until you login for the first time because nm-applet isn't running until you login and your Gnome session starts (or similar for KDE). I'm not sure what prompts NetworkManager to connect to the network when you login via a TTY. There are several relevant variables involved in starting up the network connections including: Wired vs Wireless (and the resulting drivers, SSID, passwords, and priorities) Static vs DHCP Multiple interfaces Constraints Support Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (bonus points for additional supported versions) Support wired eth0 interface Receive an IP address via DHCP Receive DNS information via DHCP (obviously the DHCP server must provide this information) Enable networking at the proper time (e.g. some time after file systems are loaded but before network services like ssh start) Switching distros or versions (e.g. to Server Edition) is not an acceptable solution Switching to a Static IP configuration is not an acceptable solution Question How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition? What I have tried Per this guide, adding the following entry into /etc/network/interfaces so that NetworkManager won't manage the eth0 interface: auth eth0 iface inet dhcp After reboot eth0 is down. Issuing ifconfig eth0 up brings the interface up but it receives no IP address. Issuing dhclient eth0 instead Does bring up the interface and it Does receive an IP address. Completely removing the NetworkManager package in addition to the settings above. I'm a bit confused with the whole UpStart/SysVinit mangling that's going in Ubuntu currently (I'm more familiar with the CentOS world). However, directly issuing sudo /etc/init.d/networking start Or sudo start networking does not bring up the eth0 interface at all, much less get an IP address. • Injection of banners in my webbrowsers possible malware

  Recently I have started to suspect that I have some kind of virus on my computer. There are 3 symptoms: Banners are being displayed on pages that doesn't use commercials, for instance when viewing screen-shots on Steam. It is only displayed after the rest of the page has been loaded and seems to be injected into it. The whole page is replaced with a commercial with the option to skip the commercial. The page is replaced with a search window claiming that the page could not be found. I have tried to scan my computer with Antivir and Adaware but only found a couple of tracking cookies. I have run HijackThis but since this isn't really my area I haven't been able to discern what shouldn't be there except the line about zonealarm since I have uninstalled it. Is there anyone out there who is able to see if there is anything suspicious in the log-file at the end or has suggestions regarding programs that might be better to find the virus than Antivir and Adaware?   Does anyone have experience with configuring Cisco AnyConnect VPN? We have a problem with client DNS name resolution when connected over VPN. To me, it looks as if the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client intercepts DNS queries from the clients. Can someone confirm that the AnyConnect VPN client in fact does this (intercepts DNS traffic)? Where is this configured on the VPN server?   I had asked the similar question before. This time I want to use subnet for two iSCSI Targets, hence I start a new question. I have an old Promise VTrak M500i SAN Server. It comes with 2 iSCSI ports. I want to connect to two LUNs on the SAN server through two separate Targets from CentOS 5.7 64bits server. My network setup is as follows: CentOS server: Management network - 192.168.1.1 Storage network 1 - 192.168.5.2 Storage network 2 - 192.168.6.2 Promise SAN server: Management network - 192.168.1.2 iSCSI Port 1 - 192.168.5.1 iSCSI Port 2 - 192.168.6.1 I have two Logical Drives on this SAN and they are mapped as follows: Index Initiator Name LUN Mapping 0 iqn.2011-11:backup (LD0,0) 1 iqn.2011-11:template (LD1,1) Basically, I want the traffic to iqn.2011-11:backup LUN 0 through 192.168.5.1 network the traffic to iqn.2011-11:template LUN 1 through 192.168.6.1 network I don't use MPIO, just want to separate the traffic to avoid traffic jam. How do I achieve this? I am new to SAN stuff, please explain as much detail as you can. Thank you. The following are what I am doing now. • Failure to install NetFX3 on Windows Server 2012: Error 3017 -- Am I missing something here?

  I am really struggling to get this installed. I have tried the suggestions here in an attempt to rectify any possible corruption. I mounted the disk image to 'G' to do an offline install.   I'm trying to set up my sendmail to authenticate against a relay (comcast). I'm not seeing any attempts to authenticate at all. I'm trying to just debug how authentication works, and can't connect all the pieces... That suggests that my username should be in "U:", actually, but http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/auth.html says that "I:" is your remote user name. • Why do I need to set up Autologon values in registry twice in before it works and can I fix this?

  Background: As part an automated testing suite I am building, I need to set up Autologon on my virtual machines 'on demand'. By on demand, I mean that I don't want to necessarily pre-configure my VM or any snapshot to have Autologon set up already, for security reasons and also a huge business case. My solution so far: I'm copying a script to the guest machine and then using Sysinternals PsExec to execute it. The Problem: I see PsExec executes this properly and all the values are in the registry, however when I restart the machine, the user isn't automatically logged on...When I run this a second time then restart the machine, the user is finally logged on. A diff between the registry states shows that the first time I run this, it is missing both the "1" for AutoAdminLogon, and also the DefaultPassword key. The second time I execute it, these values are correctly intact as I intended. So, what is going on here? Is this expected? This post claims in the end that it really all just works (the problem was that a logoff script was setting off the values). Doesn't seem to work for me however. Note this seems unique to Windows 7, does not occur in Windows XP Also note that you don't need PsExec to recreate the issue - just modify the registry yourself EDIT/update: Login interactively and run script (so, not executing it remotely), logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when I'm interactively logged in, logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when with non-interactive session if I log in afterwards (so, interactive now) then back off, it logs me back in (so, it then works) EDIT/update 2: This only occurs for Win7x86, Win7x64, Win8x64. • CentOS 5.7 keeps rebooting after fresh installation

  I have just installed CentOS 5.7 x86_64 on a new computer. The installation went on without any issues. But, after it finnished, the machine started to show an awkward behaviour: it restarts every time it tries to boot. It happens after all the services have been started. The screen just goes black and it shows an error message from the monitor: Input not supported. And then it reboots. I took a look at the logs, but I couldn't manage to find anything. Any help? Update Before doing the hardware diagnosis, as pointed out, I decided to make some tests. First, I changed the runlevel to 3, adding the 3 parameter at the end of the kernel command. Then, after logging in in text mode, I checked the xorg.conf file out for some problems regarding the screen resolution. There was nothing unexpected set. Well, if there had to be a problem with it, I couldn't start the X server at the command line, right? So, I typed startx and Gnome started! So, probably, it's not an issue with the screen resolution, I suppose. Then I selected the Log Out root... Gnome menu option and something odd happened: the screen went black, the Input not supported monitor error message was displayed and the system rebooted. Yes, the same problem I was having while trying to boot! After that, I decided to try yet another test: I removed the rhgb quiet parameters from the kernel command to see if some error would show up. Well, to my surprise, the boot went on without problems! The Gnome login screen showed up, I logged in and the session started. But then I selected the Shut Down... menu option and guess what? Same problem: black screen, same monitor error and the system rebooted. Yes, it rebooted, it did not shut down. I repeated both of the tests and the behaviours were the same. I really don't know what's going on. It seems to be an issue regarding the changing of the screen mode or something like that. Any ideas? Could this be a hardware problem? Or does it seem to be something regarding the system configuration?

• Unusual Apache->Tomcat caching issue.

  Right now, I have an Apache setup sitting in front of Tomcat to handle caching. This setup has been given to an external service to manage, and since the transition, I've noticed odd behavior. Specifically, when I request a swf file from the web server, I hit the Apache cache (good), but occasionally I'll receive a truncated file. Once I receive this truncated file, the cache will NOT refresh until I manually delete the cache and let the swf pull down from tomcat again. The external service claims that the configuration is fine, but I don't see any way this could be happening aside from improper configuration. Now, there are two apache and two tomcat servers under a load balancer, and occasionally one apache cache will break while another does not (leading to 50% of all requests getting bad, truncated data). Where should I start looking to debug this issue? What could POSSIBLY be causing this odd behavior? • How to properly shutdown a Linux VMware Server Host

  Hi Everybody: In our lab, we have a server running Ubuntu Linux 8.04.4 x64, with VMware Server 2.1 hosting 4 VM's. I have a major concern with regards to shutting down the host server. Mostly, how do I ensure that the guest VM's are being shut down safely? In the VMware web interface console, I have enabled: "Allow virtual machines to start and stop automatically with the system" I enabled the Default Startup Delay for 15 seconds along with the "Start next VM immediately if the VMware Tools start" option checked I enabled the Default Shutdown Delay with a 60 second shutdown delay and a Shutdown Action of "Shut Down Guest" All VM's have the VMware Tools installed and properly working. All VM's are moved up into the "Specified Order" section of "Startup Order", thus when powering the server back on, all those VM's should start up again in that specified order. When I went to shut down the server, I used the shutdown -h now command. Based on the settings I entered above, I was expecting a 4 minute shutdown, as there is an option to delay the shutdown of each VM by 60 seconds. However, that is not what happened. Instead, the server shutdown in under a minute. When I powered the server back on, only 2 VM's properly loaded. The other 2 showed the following error: "Power on Virtual Machine" failed to complete If these problems problems persist, please contact your system administrator. Details: Cannot open the disk '[location to .vmdk]' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: Failed to lock the file. Obviously, if this error occured, then it is clear to me that the VM's were not properly shutdown, or the server powered off before the VM's were completely shutdown. I have fixed the above error by deleting the .lck files in the respective VM directories. How would I know if the VM's were properly shut down? I checked the VMware-server logs, but they only seem to display the logs of when the vmware-mgmt service is running in the current session. I'm mostly running Linux VM's, so is there an easy way to know whether or not a server was properly shut down in Linux? Thank you all for the help!
