• How to Reach German Developers: dotnet Cologne 2011

  If you want to promote tools, technologies, libraries, trainings or anything else of interest to software developers, you want to reach the right audience. Not the 9-to-5 people, but those who have the knowledge and passion that make them important multipliers. A great way to reach these people are community conferences. They are not the kind of conference that the 9-to-5 folks are “sent to” by their company, but that the right people hear of via Twitter, Facebook, blogs or plain old word-of-mouth and choose to go to, often covering the costs for the day themselves (travel, entrance fee, hotel, taking the day off). If you want to reach German developers there is one conference that has emerged as the large .NET community conference in Germany, quickly growing beyond being just a local event: The dotnet Cologne, that will be held for the third time on May 6, 2011 and that I’m co-organizing (this interview gives you a good idea of the history). This year’s dotnet Cologne 2010 with its 300 attendees was a huge success. • How can I trap errors for an application that is tightly coupled with IIS?

  We have an unsupported application that relies on IIS however intermittently brings out the website it is integrated with. I have looked at the logs and there is nothing in the logs to indicate what the issue could be as the logs only have GET verbs. I have also looked at the event viewer and there are no error logged in there either. The application runs off a Windows 2008 server. Is there a freely available application we can have running in the background that will listen to or is aware of the application running and traps the error when it crashes? The unsupported application is a bespoke implementation for which we don't have code for and the developer is no longer contactable.

• MySQL slave replication Seconds behind master increasing?

  I started a MySQL slave using innobackupexand the Read_Master_Log_Pos: and the Relay_Log_Pos: are updating however the seconds behind master keeps on increasing (it's at Seconds_Behind_Master:496637 currently and increasing). • Send an email whenever file is deleted from shared folder in windows 7

  I am running a software on several computers at my workplace and the software can run different audio and video files stored on a shared folder in a central computer. The software runs on windows 7 and every person in my company can add or remove files from the shared folder, but this privilege puts the data at risk. I was thinking of creating an email alert to my self whenever a file is deleted. I have written a windows powershell script for sending me emails from smtp server but how can I hook it up to the event of file or folder deletion in a specific shared folder?

• POP Forums v10 beta posted for ASP.NET MVC 4

  Finally got some momentum and replaced the beta formerly known as v9.3. You can get it here, where you’ll find the information below. You can also read my previous post on why I ditched jQuery Mobile. This is the beta for POP Forums v10, with the mobile special sauce. It requires ASP.NET MVC 4 RC, which you can download here. Of course, feel free to submit bugs to the issue tracker. See a live demo here: http://popforums.com/Forums What's new? Uses a very light weight CSS and Javascript package to provide a touch-friendly interface for mobile devices. Numbers are formatted (sensitive to culture) when 1,000 or higher. CSS is more integration friendly, and specific to the ForumContainer element. Mail delivery from queue is now parallel, so you can specify a sending interval, and the number of messages to process on each interval. Background "services" refactored, and will only run with a call on app start to PopForumsActivation.StartServices(). This is partly to facilitate future use in Web farms/multiple Web roles. Update to jQuery v1.7.1. Replaced use of .live() with .on() in script, pursuant to jQuery update, which deprecates .live(). FIX: Bug in topic repository around caching keys for single-server data layer. FIX: Pager links on recent topics pointed to incorrect route. FIX: Deleting a post didn't update last user/post time. FIX: Ditched attempt at writing to event log with super failures, since almost no one has permission in production. FIX: Bug in grayed-out fields in admin mail setup. FIX: Weird color profiles would break loading of images for resize. FIX: TOS text on account sign-up was double encoded. Known issues None yet, but ditching jQuery Mobile from the previous beta turned out to be a good decision.

• The Customer Experience Revolution is Now

  To conclude this week’s focus on customer experience, I’ll end by recapping how my week began in New York City at The Experience Revolution. We all know that customers increasingly call the shots, and that winning or losing depends on how well we manage to meet their expectations. Today’s customers have a multitude of choices and are quick to jump ship following a poor experience. As a result, delivering an experience that is relevant, interactive, engaging, and consistent across channels and fostering rewarding relationships are increasingly important to business success.  It is only through exceptional customer experiences that companies can expect to acquire new customers and maintain their loyalty.  Over 400 of us gathered at Gotham Hall on Monday night to hear Oracle President Mark Hurd introduce Oracle Customer Experience, a cross-stack suite of customer experience products that include Oracle RightNow CX Cloud Service, Oracle Endeca, Oracle ATG Web Commerce, Oracle WebCenter,Oracle Siebel CRM, Oracle Fusion CRM, Oracle Social Network, and Oracle Knowledge Management. I'd encourage you check out this video to hear Mark explain why having a good product isn't good enough in the wake of the customer experience revolution. • Windows Server 2003 Standby/Sleep Results in Cold Boot when Resuming

  I'm running Windows Server 2003 sp2 on a Dell Inspiron e1705. There has never been a problem going to standby/sleep mode (by closing the laptop lid, or from the Start menu), and then resuming later. Today I did a Windows Update to install the latest patches and fixes. I don't know if there is a correlation, but now when I resume from standby/sleep mode, the machine does a cold boot. The AC adapter is connected. The battery is 2 months old, and all its LEDs light up when pressing its test button. The Power Management shows it at "99% (charging)" all the time. There is nothing suspicious in any of the event logs. Any ideas?

• "A device attached to the system is not functioning" when reconnecting to XenApp 6 session

  A few of our XenApp 6 customers are seeing issue sometimes when users move from one workstation to another and try to connect to their running session. An error box pops up with "A device attached to the system is not functioning" This is on healthy 2008 R2 servers with all Citrix hotfixes applied. After the error, the user's session must be logged out before they can get back in. This was posted here: http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=273457 , but is not answered. There is nothing telling in the event logs, and it is an inconsistent problem. Has anyone else seen this issue of found a fix?

• Running evrouter at boot with init.d, or after xserver starts

  I'm using evrouter to set up mouse button binds, and init.d to start it. If evrouter requires xserver to be up, how do I get init to wait until after xserver starts to run this script? If xserver restarts will this script run automatically? Running this with sudo services evrouter start still results in this error, can init.d scripts not tell where my display is? (Not exactly familiar with init, runlevels, etc)

• Can't connect to sql server 2008 named instance

  I have sql server 2005 and 2008 running on a server on my local (and very straightforward) network. Using sql management studio 2008 and visual studio 2008, I can connect over the network to the 2005 instance which is the default instance. I can't connect to the 08 instance (named MC08). I can connect to both when logged in to the server. Remote connections have been enabled for MC08 and dynamic ports is turned off (assigned to port 1045). The sql browser service is running as well. This used to work so I'm not sure what has changed. I can't connect using the IP address either. Nothing unusual in the event log either. Any ideas?

  I am developing an SWT application (it's basically an Eclipse plugin, so I need to use SWT). Currently my design is as follows: Model: In model, I have POJOs which represents the actual fields in views. View: It is a dumb layer, it contains just UI and contains no logic (not even event handlers) Controller: It acts as a mediator b/w those two layers. Also it is responsible for creating view layer, handling events etc. Basically I have created all of the controls in view as a static like this public static Button btnLogin and in controller I have a code like this: public void createLoginView(Composite comp) { LoginFormView.createView(comp); //This createView method is in view layer ie LoginFormView LoginFormView.btnLogin.addSelectionListener(new SelectionListener() { //Code goes here }); } Similalrly I have done for other views and controls. So that in main class and other classes I am calling just createLoginView of controller. I am doing similar thing for other views. So my question, is what I am doing is correct? Is this design good? Or I should have followed any other approach. Since I am new to SWT and Eclipse plugin development (basically I am Java EE developer having 4+ years of exp). Any tips/pointers would be appreciated.

• Can't install Apache 2.2.22 on Ubuntu 13.10

  My work environment requires Apache 2.2.22 instead of the latest version of 2.4. My machine is currently running Ubuntu 13.10. When I use Synaptic or apt-get it will not allow me to choose an older version of Apache than 2.4. So my question is, how can I force an install of Apache 2.2.22 on Ubuntu 13.10 using Synaptic or apt-get. When I do try to specify the version I get the following: sudo apt-get install apache2=2.2.22-1ubuntu1 [sudo] password for b18c1: Reading package lists... • How do I prevent IIS 8 from stopping idle ASP.NET applications?

  I have an asp.net application running on Windows 2012 in IIS 8 that has a very time consuming application start process (essentially the code running in the Application_Start() event can take up to 2 minutes). Thus I'd like to minimize the number of times the application is started so that the user can avoid a long wait. I've enabled Preload in the application settings, and I've set the Start Mode to AlwaysRunning in the application pool. Yet the application still ends after not being used for a while, resulting in a very long time for the first visit to the website after the application shuts down. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can prevent this? Thanks

• Windows Server Backup - Can I restore to a particular revision?

  I'm using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 to do a scheduled daily backup to a dedicated hard-drive on the server. I noticed that under "All backups" it says I have 45 copies. Does this mean that I can restore to any revision of my data upon system failure? If the answer is yes, then I don't have to worry about taking monthly or weekly snapshots of my data. I'm concerned about a data corruption event occurring that working its way into my backups... then not having a clean snapshot to go back to. Thanks!

• How to ...set up new Java environment - largely interfaces...

  Hi, Looks like I need to setup a new Java environment for some interfaces we need to build. Say our system is X and we need to interfaces to systems A, B and C. Then we will be writing interfaces X-A, X-B, X-C. Our system has a bus within it, so the publishing on our side will be to the bus and the interface processes will be taking from the bus and mapping to the destination system. Its for a vendor based system - so most of the core code we can't touch. Currently thinking we will have several processes, one per interface we need to do. The question is how to structure things. Several of the APIs we need to work with are Java based. We could go EJB, but prefer to keep it simple, one process per interface, so that we can restart them individually. Similarly SOA seems overkill, although I am probably mixing my thoughts about implementations of it compared to the concepts behind it... Currently thinking that something Spring based is the way to go. In true, "leverage a new tech if possible"-style, I am thinking maybe we can shoe horn some jruby into this, perhaps to make the APIs more readable, perhaps event-machine-like and to make the interface code more business-friendly, perhaps even storing the mapping code in the DB, as ruby snippets that get mixed in... but thats an aside... So, any comments/thoughts on the Spring approach - anything more up-to-date/relevant these days. EDIT: Looking a JRuby further, I am tempted to write it fully in JRuby... in which case do we need any frameworks at all, perhaps some gems to make things clearer... Thanks in advance, Chris
