• How to add user customized data to database?

  I am trying to design a sqlite database that will store notes. Each of these notes will have common fields like title, due date, details, priority, and completed. In addition though, I would like to add data for more specialized notes like price for shopping list items and author/publisher data for books. I also want to have a few general purpose fields that users can fill with whatever text data they want. How can I design my database table in this case? I could just have a field for each piece of data for every note, but that would waste a lot of fields and I'd like to have other options and suggestions.

• Searching for the right pattern to handle login data

  Hi all, I'm working on a controller that handles logins for a Web app. These logins will come from multiple clients but will all contain the same data. However, depending on the client, this data will be interpreted into common entities for our webapp differently. For instance, we have a user code that gets sent in, and in one case we may use the first four digits of the code, and in another case 12 digits of the code to map to a field on a User entity. Instead of handling this all in the controller and having big nasty if blocks of logic, I would like to use a pattern to handle how this information gets ingested into our application. What are your opinions?

• rails gem share_counts GET method on object?

  created the first rails app! excinting! for two weeks now I did Zombie, rubymonk etc. I love it! I used scaffold form url:string and included the gem share_counts. rails c: f = form.first ShareCounts.twitter f.url works! but... I have trouble to write the controller and the view! For you experienced railies this is probably a silly question, and probably only 5 lines of code, but for me thats a big step learning RoR! • What is the pythonic way to add type information to an object's attributes?

  I'm building classes where I know the types of the attributes, but Python of course doesn't. While it's un-pythonic to want to tell it, supposing I do want to, is there an idiomatic way to do so? Why: I'm reading in serialised data (without type information) involving objects-nested-inside-objects. It's easy to put it into nested dictionaries, but I want it in objects of my class-types, to get the right behaviours as well as the data. For instance: suppose my class Book has an attribute isbn which I will fill with an ISBNumber object. My serialised data gives me the isbn as a string; I would like to be able to look at Book and say "That field should be filled by ISBNumber(theString)." Bonus glee for me if the solution can be applied to classes I get from someone else without editing their code.

The user should input a number and the searchengine should return all cars that have less than this number passengers.   For example, In an ActivityA there's a button to create an Intent that will start ActivityB in a new task, like this: Intent i = new Intent(this, ActivityB.class); i.setData(Uri.parse("http://www.google.com")); long timestamp = System.currentTimeMillis(); i.putExtra("ts", timestamp); i.addFlag(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); Log.d(TAG, "Sending: " + timestamp); startActivity(i); Then in ActivityB's onResume() method, there's this code to check the timestamp: long timestamp = getIntent().getExtras().getLong("ts"); Log.d(TAG, "Receiving: " + timestamp); Now the first time I invoke ActivityB from ActivityA I get the following logs: Sending: 120006000 Receiving: 120006000 Then if I left ActivityB running in the background (by pressing Home button), and start ActivityA then invoke ActivityB again, the following is printed: Sending: 120013000 Receiving: 120006000 It seems although ActivityB is brought to front by the new Intent. The extra field in the intent is being left behind. Is this a bug or an intended behavior?

  I'm having problems using params in the ORDER BY section of my SQL. It doesn't issue any warnings, but prints out nothing. $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT field from table WHERE column = :my_param ORDER BY :order :direction"); $stmt->bindParam(':my_param', $is_live, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':order', $order, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':direction', $direction, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->execute(); The :my_param works, but not :order or :direction. Is it not being internally escaped correctly? Am I stuck inserting it directly in the SQL? Like so: $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * from table WHERE is_live = :is_live ORDER BY $order $direction"); Is there a PDO::PARAM_COLUMN_NAME constant or some equivalent? • created modified function (default) is not working in Cakephp 1.2 version

  I created an application and all the db tables have 'created,modified' fields that filled automatically by Cakephp's Default Functionality. And i put the Field Type is created datetime NULL, modified datetime NULL, like. But it doesn't work. The data where shows 0000-00-00 00:00:00 Format. The cakephp version is 1.2 , so i put the datetime NULL option ,also i removed the temp,cache files in Model. I need to save the correct date & time format for those 2 fields. If there is any problem with XAMPP version (I use the latest version of XAMPP,1.7.7 PHP: 5.3.8 & mysql v 5.5.16 ) I hope that all are identifies my Issue. Please help me with correct solution.   Recently I've bumped into realization/implementation of Singleton design pattern for C++. It has looked in the following way (I have adopted it from real life example): // a lot of methods is omitted here class Singleton { public: static Singleton* getInstance( ); ~Singleton( ); private: Singleton( ); static Singleton* instance; }; From this declaration I can deduce that instance field is initiated on the heap, that means there is a memory allocation. That is completely unclear for me is when does exactly memory is going to be deallocated? Or there is a bug and memory leak? It seems like there is a problem in implementation. PS. And main question how to implement it in the right way?

  I need to model Owners and Rentees in an application, so you have stuff that is always owned by someone and can be rented for someone else. I first approached this problem with Single Table Inheritance because both types of person will share all attributes, so you would have a model called Person associated to a table people with Owner and Rentee inheriting from Person. The problem is that Single type inheritance discerns subtypes using a field type and therefore a record in the table can represent either an Owner or a Rentee but not both at the same time, while in the real context you can have an Owner which is renting something from another Owner and therefore that person is at the same time an Owner and a Rentee. How would you approach this problem? Would you use separated tables fro owners and rentees? Is there any other type of table inheritance in Rails?

  Recently someone stated that they thought all Creates should be CreateOrUpdates. Instinctively i thought bad, but now I am trying to find out if I have any grounds. Situation interface IService{ void Create(Object a); void Update(Object a); } or interface IService{ void CreateOrUpdate(Object a); } My first thought is if you implemented everything CreateOrUpdate then you have no control if someone accidentally sends you wrong data, or concurrency issues where someone changes a "primary" field right before you call update.... But if you remove those cases, are there any other cons?

  Hi, I would like to sort elements in a comma-separated list. The elements in the list are structs and I would like the list to be sorted according to one of the fields in the struct. For example, given the following code: L = {struct('obs', [1 2 3 4], 'n', 4), struct('obs', [6 7 5 3], 'n', 2)}; I would want to have a way to sort L by the field 'n'. Matlab's sort function only works on matrices or arrays and on lists of strings (not even lists of numbers). Any ideas on how that may be achieved? Thanks, Micha

  I'm using "proxy" to extend various Swing classes in a Clojure GUI application, generally with code that looks something like: (def ^JPanel mypanel (proxy [JPanel] [] (paintComponent [#^Graphics g] (.drawImage g background-image 0 0 nil)))) This works well but I can't figure out how to add additional fields to the newly extended class, for example making the background-image a field that could be subsequently updated. This would be pretty easy and common practice in Java. Is there a good way to do this in Clojure? Or is there another preferred method to achieve the same effect?

  I have a simple login form with 2 input fields: "username" and "password". "username" field is focused by default. The problem is that when user clicks outside "username" or "password" fields, the focus is gone (it is neither on "username" nor on "password" fields"). How can I force the focus to be on these 2 fields only ? I know that I can use 2 variables and divide them, but the input is from a single text field. Is this at all possible? I want to do this because I need to calculate the fractions to decimal odds.
