  • SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 is available!

    - by AaronBertrand
Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2012. Though so far it is only being made available for the x64 platform. You can read about the fixes in the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/20120401 The build # appears to be the same as RTM: 11.0.2100. Which may mean it's just a ploy to bring on board all those folks who still think it's necessary to wait for SP1. I haven't tried installing it yet, as I'm still on travel, but please let me know if you have any issues....(read more)

  • Utility Objects Series Introduction (but mostly a bit of an update)

    - by drsql
So, I have been away from blogging about technical stuff for a  long time,  (I haven’t blogged at all since my resolutions blog , and even my Simple Talk “commentary” blog hasn’t had an entry since December!)  Most of this has been due to finishing up my database design book , which I will blog about at least one more time after it ships next month, but now it is time to get back to it certainly in a bit more regularly. For SQL Rally, I have two sessions, a precon on Database Design,...(read more)

  • Presenting Beginning PowerShell at SQL Saturday 149 MN

    - by merrillaldrich
I am happy to be presenting a session on beginning PowerShell for DBAs at my new home town’s SQL Saturday! (I moved from Seattle to Saint Paul, MN a short time ago.) I will be sharpening this presentation up to make sure anyone who comes will not go away empty handed. BTW, WOW, the schedule is up and I must admit I did not expect nine tracks of awesome. This looks amazing. My session is geared toward helping those DBAs who have not seen PowerShell, or perhaps may find PowerShell syntax opaque or...(read more)

  • SSIS Basics: Using the Execute SQL Task to Generate Result Sets

The Execute SQL Task of SSIS is extraordinarily useful, but it can cause a lot of difficulty for developers learning SSIS, or only using it occasionally. What it needed, we felt, was a clear step-by-step guide that showed the basics of how to use it effectively. Annette Allen has once again cleared the fog of confusion. NEW! • How to you solve the problem of implicit locking and parallel execution?

    - by Eonil
Where the code is: function A() { lock() doSomething() unlock() } We can call A safely from multiple threads, but it never be executed in parallel . For parallel execution, we have to evade all of this code. But the problem is we never know the A is getting lock or not. If we have source code (maybe lucky case), we have to decode all code to know locking is happening or not. This sucks. But even worse is we normally have no source code. It's obvious this kind of hidden locks will become bottleneck of parallel execution even all the other parts are designed for parallel. And also, (1) With locks, execution cannot be parallel. (2) And I can't know whether the locks are used or not in any code. (3) Defensively, I can't make parallel anything! This facts drives me crazy. How do you solve this problem?

  • SQL Server 2008 - Management Studio issue

    - by Phil Streiff
This is a known, documented issue with SQL Server 2008 Management Studio, but certain DDL operations like ALTERing a column datatype from Management Studio fails. For example, in Object Explorer, navigate to a table column > right-click on column > Modify. Then, change column datatype or length, then save and this error message displays: To workaround this problem, go to Query Editor and issue the following DDL statement instead:  TABLE dbo.FTPFile ALTER COLUMN CmdLine VARCHAR (100) ; ALTER   GO   The column change is successfuly applied now.

  • Another Update to SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility

    - by Bill Graziano
I’ve been gradually adding features to my utility that scripts the configuration of a SQL Server.  Since my last post I’ve added the following features: Skip any encrypted object in a database Script alerts, alert notifications and operators Script audits Always script model, master and msdb to capture any user-defined objects in those databases Logins are now scripted so that everything for a login is grouped together. There’s a second section in the logins that handles default databases.  In many cases a login’s default database is a mirror target and can’t be set.  This is now handled gracefully.  It also includes a separate section for all default databases so those can be quickly set in the event of a disaster. Script credentials Script proxy accounts Script database mail My goal is still to get everything outside a database scripted.  This release is enough that I can keep my mirror target servers in sync with their principals.

  • Getting Started with Hashing in SQL Server

Encryption brings data into a state which cannot be interpreted by anyone who does not have access to the decryption key, password, or certificates. Hashing brings a string of characters of arbitrary size into a usually shorter fixed-length value or key. Here's how to get started using it. • Ctrl-R Not Working in SSMS After a Patch?

    - by andyleonard
I whined about this recently on Facebook. After that, I did something practical: I searched for a solution. I found a workaround at Connect : Open SSMS Select "Tools", "Customize..." - Click "Keyboard..." - In the list window, scroll down and select "Window.ShowResultsPane" - Under "Use new shortcut in:", select "SQL Query Editor" - Place your cursor in the "Press shortcut keys:" input area and press Ctrl+R - Click "Assign",...(read more)

  • Script to create dynamic PIVOT queries in SQL Server

Pivoting is a common reporting requirement - data is stored in columns and you need to present it in rows. This was a nice feature that was added to SQL Server, but you don't always know all of the values you need to pivot on. This tip looks at how you can dynamically create the pivot command to handle these unknown values. • Wait random number of minutes

    - by TiborKaraszi
Why on earth would you want to do that? you ask. Say you have a job that is scheduled to start at the same time over a number of servers. This might be because you have an SQL Server Master/Target server environment (MSX/TSX) or you quite simply script a job and execute that script on several servers. You probably want to spread the load on your SAN and virtual machine host a bit. This is the exact reason I use this procedure. I frequently use MSX servers and I usually add a job step (executing this...(read more)

  • T-SQL Tuesday #014:I Hereby Resolve

    - by AllenMWhite
It's another T-SQL Tuesday! Like many others, I really don't make New Year's Resolutions. They're too easy to forget about and it's too easy to "justify" why it just wasn't practical (and sometimes it's true.) That said, there are some things I'm working on changing for this year. Last year was the first full year for my new business venture, and it has been successful so far. I'm confident it's going to continue on this path, and we'll be doing even better this time next year. With that success...(read more)

  • SQL Live Monitor

    - by TiborKaraszi
I just found this one out there and wanted to share it. It connects to an instance and show you a bunch of figures. Nothing you can't extract yourself with SQL queries, but sometimes it is just nice to have one tool which is very easy to use. Here's what it looks like when connecting to an instance with no load on it: As you can see, there are some hyperlinked pages as well, and there are also some interesting options (like logging to CSV or for PAL analysis) under the "Option" button. One more thing...(read more)

  • Scaling SQL Server in Azure

If you’ve been reading the wires about SQL Azure you will have seen a change to the tiers that are being offered. Thsi is all so that you can get a more predictable performance level from the platform and also to enable Azure to manage the resources. You now have 3 categories basic, standard and premium, and within those you have some other levels. This enables you to start your service at a low level and then as required request more capacity (through the portal or API).   For details on the...(read more)

  • Are the ASP.net __EVENTTARGET and __EVENTARGUMENT susceptible to SQL injection?

    - by Schleichermann
A security review was done against one of our ASP.net applications and returned in the test results was a SQL Injection Exposures considered to be a high risk item. The test that was performed passed a SQL statement as the value of the __EVENTTARGET and the __EVENTARGUMENT. I am wondering since these 2 values are ASP.net auto-generated hidden fields used for the Auto-Postback feature of the framework and hold information specific to the controls initiating the postback, is there really the potential for SQL injection if you are never manually calling and or pulling values out of these parameters in your code behind?

  • Using normalize-string XPath function from SQL XML query ?

    - by Ross Watson
Hi, is it possible to run an SQL query, with an XPath "where" clause, and to trim trailing spaces before the comparison ? I have an SQL XML column, in which I have XML nodes with attributes which contain trailing spaces. I would like to find a given record, which has a specified attribute value - without the trailing spaces. When I try, I get... "There is no function '{http://www.w3.org/2004/07/xpath-functions}:normalize-space()'" I have tried the following (query 1 works, query 2 doesn't). This is on SQL 2005. declare @test table (data xml) insert into @test values ('<thing xmlns="http://my.org.uk/Things" x="hello " />') -- query 1 ;with xmlnamespaces ('http://my.org.uk/Things' as ns0) select * from @test where data.exist('ns0:thing[@x="hello "]') != 0 -- query 2 ;with xmlnamespaces ('http://my.org.uk/Things' as ns0) select * from @test where data.exist('ns0:thing[normalize-space(@x)="hello "]') != 0 Thanks for any help, Ross

  • Slow Execution of an ASP.NET Web Page

    - by Sweta Jha
I have a web page which brings 13K+ records in 20 seconds. There is a menu on the page, clicking on which navigates me to another page which is very lightweight. Displaying the data (13K+) took only 20 seconds whereas navigating from that page took much longer, more than 2 mins. Can you tell me why is the latter taking so much of time. I've stopped the page_load code execution on click of the menu. I've disabled the viewstate for that page as well.
