• Sitecore E-Commerce Module - Discount/Promotional Codes

  I am working on a project for which I must use Sitecore's E-Commerce Module (and Sitecore 6.5 rev. 120706 - aka 'Update 5') to create a web-store. One of the features that I am trying to implement is a generic promotional/discount code system - customer enters a code at checkout which grants a discount like 'free shipping', '20% off', etc. At the moment, I am looking for some guidance (a high-level solution, a few pseudo-ideas, some references to review, etc) as to how this can be accomplished. Summary: What I am looking for is a way to detect whether or not the user entered a promo code at a previous stage in the checkout line, and to determine what that promo code is, if they did. Progress Thus Far: I have thoroughly reviewed all of the Sitecore E-Commerce Services (SES) documentation, especially "SES Order Line Extension" documentation (which I believe will have to be modified/extended in order to accomplish this task). Additionally, I have thoroughly reviewed the Sitecore Community article Extending Sitecore E-Commerce - Pricing and believe that it may be a useful guide for applying a discount statically, but does not say much in the way of applying a discount dynamically. After reviewing these documents, I have come up with the following possible high-level solution to start from: I create a template to represent a promotional code, which holds all data relevant to the promotion (percent off, free shipping, code, etc). I then create another template (based on the Product Search Group template) that holds a link to an item within a global "Promotional Code" items folder. Next, I use the Product Search Group features of my new template to choose which products to apply the discount to. In the source code for the checkout I create a class that checks if a code has been entered and, if so, somehow carry it through the rest of the checkout process. This is where I get stuck. More Details: No using cookies No GET requests No changing/creating/deleting items in the Sitecore Database during the checkout process (e.g., no manipulation of fields of a discount item during checkout to signal that the discount has been applied) must stay within the scope of C# Last Notes: I will update this post with any more information that I find/progress that I make. I upgrade all answers that are relevant and detailed, thought-provoking, or otherwise useful to me and potentially useful to others, in addition to any high-level answers that serve as a feasible solution to this problem; even if your idea doesn't help me, if I think it will help someone else I will still upgrade it. • Programming for a 32-bit environment vs programming for a 64-bit environment / Build configurations

  I was looking at some same code (a sample MS Visual Studio C++ project) recently with multiple build configurations (Release/Debug, Win32/x64). My question: What is the difference? I guess I understand Release/Debug (Release = finalized version of project, Debug = version used to run in debugger), but what things need to be considered when building different versions for Win32/x64 platforms? Is there any coding differences, or does this just affect how that same code is ultimately built into machine code? I know there are different library files depending on whether you're using a 32-bit or 64-bit system as well... Are all of these differences again just machine code? Would a 32-bit library file and its corresponding 64-bit library file be two files with exactly the same functions build from the same source code originally, and only differing in their machine code implementation? • TortoiseMerge: is there a way to hide deleted lines in the merge window

  Hello, I am attempting to merge a large quantity of files. Several of these files are in conflict and TortoiseMerge is the tool of choice. When I view the code in the "merged" windows it shows me all the code that was deleted and added as well as ??? for code that is in-conflict. I am not really sure why it shows me the deleted code, but I do know that I don't want to see it. Seeing lines of code that were removed in a window that is "the results" doesn't make any sense; and, it makes it harder to read the. Is there a way to hide the deleted code in that "results" window so only the text that is actually going to be in the file, shows up? I have read the manual (cursively) and I didn't see anything in there that indicated how to accomplish this (seemingly insignificant) task.

• DllImport Based on OS Platform

  I have a mixture of unmanaged code ( backend) and managed code ( front end), as such, I would need to call the unmanaged code from my managed code, using interop techniques and DllImport attribute. Now, I've compiled two versions of unmanaged code, for both 32 and 64 bit OS; they are named service32.dll and service64.dll respectively. So, in my .Net code, I would have to do a DllImport for both dlls: [DllImport(@"service32.dll")] //for 32 bit OS invocation public static void SimpleFunction(); [DllImport(@"service64.dll")] //for 64 bit OS invocation public static void SimpleFunction(); And call them depending on which platform my application is running on. The issue now is that for every unmanaged function, I have to declared it twice, one for 32 bit OS and one for 64 bit OS. This is a duplication of work, and everytime I change the signature of an unmanaged function, I have to modified it in two places. Is there anyway that I can change the argument in DllImport so that the correct dll will be invoked automagically, depending on the platform?

• Registering a delegate function with an ISO C++ callback (on mono)

  I am thinking of wrapping ISO C++ code in C# class. The only problem so far is how to deal with the C++ callbacks. In .Net languages (C# and Vb.Net), I believe the callback equivalent. Sticking with C# for now, can anyone recommend a way that I can register the C# delegate functions with my ISO C++ code. The ISO C++ code is a notification library, and I want to be able to "push" the notifications to the mono framework (i.e. C# delegates in this case). My underlying assumption is that the mechanism/steps to implement this would be the same for the .Net languages - I'll just have to code the actual delegates in the .Net language of choice - is that assumption correct? Last but not the least, is the question of thread saftey. The underlying ISO C++ code that I am exposing to .Net (mono to be more specific), is both re-ntrant and thread safe - do I have to do anything "extra" to call .Net delegate from my ISO C++ code?

• What can cause System.Move to occasionaly give wrong results?

  The last few days we have had some strange problems with our database components developed by a third party. There has been no changes to these components for months. The code that HAS changed the last few days is our own code and we have also updated our gui-components developed by another third party. After debugging I have found that a call to System.Move in one of the database component procedures occationaly gives wrong results! Please take a look at the code below from the database components and read my comments. How can this inconsistent behaviour happen? Can anyone give me an idea of how to procede to find the cause of this inconsistent behaviour? NB! I dont think there is anything wrong with THIS code, it is only shown to explain the problem "symptoms". My guess is that there is some sort of memory corruption or something, caused by our code or the updated gui-component-code. Edit: Take a look at the blogpost linked below. • Is there a "dual user check-in" source control system?

  Are there any source control systems that require another user to validate the source code "before" it can be checked-in? I want to know as this is one technique to make sure that code quality is high. Update: There has been talk of "Branches" in the answers, and while I feel branches have there place I think that branchs are something different as when a developer's code is ready to go into the main branch it "should" be checked. Most often though I see that when this happens a lead developer or whoever is responsible for the merge into the main branch/stream just puts the code into the main branch as long as it "compiles" and does no more checks than that. I want the idea of two people putting their names to the code at an early stage so that it introduces some responsibility, and also because the code is cheaper to fix early on and is also fresh in the developers mind.

• Profiling Java running by JNI calls

  Hi, I have a C++ code that upon execution: Loads JVM (I have full control on how to load the JVM), and call Java methods (from loaded classes) using C JNI code. The Java code has no Main() and it is actually not a standard Java application. it is mainly a static code that compiled and compacted into Jar file, the code is being called by the C++ module. Is it possible to profile this Java code being executed by YourKit (have license for it)? If so I'll be glad to know how. Thanks, Guy

• Why does JAXB not create a member variable in its generated code when an XML schema base type and subtype have the same element declared in them?

  I have a question regarding with regard to JAXB generated classes. As you can I see, I have a complex type, DG_PaymentIdentification1, declared in my schema. Its a restriction of PaymentIdentification1. DG_PaymentIdentification1 is also identical to PaymentIdentification1. I also have a type called DG_CreditTransferTransactionInformation10 which has a base type of CreditTransferTransactionInformation10 and is identical to it. Writing code that takes the text, splits it by whitespace or newlines or something, then processes each line and has a dictionary for variables. Or writing code that takes text and converts it to another programming language. • How do I post to a webservice and display the returned Response in MVC3 Razor Application?

  I have need to call a webservice from an HTML helper extension I created (combinbation of Action and Image) and placed in the view as follows @Html.ActionImage("CallService", new { number = ViewBag.number, code = ViewBag.code, account = ViewBag.account, amount = ViewBag.amount }, "~/Content/sb_200x61.png", "Start the Process") I am making the action call and it calls the service and returns a string of the html response, but it doesn't look right. I am using the typical HttpWebRequest to do the POST Action in C# code. Code #1: <select data-bind="options: operatingSystems, optionsText: function (item) { return item.Name }, value: selectedOperatingSystem"></select> Code #2: <script type="text/html" id="os-template-detail"> <option data-bind="text: Name" class="body-text"></option> </script> <select data-bind="value: selectedOperatingSystem, template: { name: 'os-template-detail', foreach: operatingSystems }"></select> Both shows data from json correctly. With code #1, it updates the value when I select an item on the list while code #2 does not update anything when I change the item. I am pretty new to Knockout.js and have no idea why Code #2 doesn't work. Is it the limitation of Knockout that preventing me from using template and value at the same time?

  I have 3 tables to join to get table1.code, table1.series, table2.entry_date, table3.title1 and I'm trying to get the most recent non null table3.title1 grouped by table1.code and table1.series. select table1.code, table1.series, max(table2.entry_date), table3.Title1 from table3 INNER JOIN table2 ON table3.ID = table2.ID INNER JOIN table1 ON table2.source_code = table1.code where table3.Title1 is not NULL group by table1.code, table1.series, table3.Title1 seems to give me all entries with a non null title1 instead of the most recent one. How should I structure the query to just pick the newest version of Title1 per code & series?

  Recently I've bumped into the following C++ code: if (a) { f(); } else if (b) { f(); } else if (c) { f(); } Where a, b and c are all different conditions, and they are not very short. I tried to change the code to: if (a || b || c) { f(); } But the author opposed saying that my change will decrease readability of the code. I had two arguments: 1) You should not increase readability by replacing one branching statement with three (though I really doubt that it's possible to make code more readable by using else if instead of ||). 2) It's not the fastest code, and no compiler will optimize this. But my arguments did not convince him. What would you tell a programmer writing such a code? Do you think complex condition is an excuse for using else if instead of OR?

• Jquery .text() seems not to work on XML in IE7

  My PHP backend sends XML response to the client (ajax): <response> <code>0</code> <message>OK</message> </response> in the javascript I'm trying to get CODE value in this way: var errorCode = $('code', xml).text(); and then depending on errorCode value I do processing. It is working fine in all browsers I tested except IE7. Instead of CODE value - it is giving me the empty string. The problem is not in 0 value, because I tried to use 5 as a code for example - the result was the same. Any ideas, because I'm stuck with :(( Thanks.
